Coming from church as El Nino rains start we took a trip to Downey Landing off Lakewood blvd. We were going to go Hawaiian but this place caught my eye. Looks in the window a tipical Chinese lil buffet like P Ex. Butvery wrong. The food looks fresh and great as you walk up. And counter staff truly friendly and prompt. Food selections are somewhat typical except instead of chow main and rice they also have a vegetable base as well. Prices are standard you have the one two or three combo also have shrimp special combo 3 flavor noodle soup shrimp with lobster sauce and have family feast and prices are nice. They do catering as well. My wife got mushrooms chicken and orange chicken with chow main. Orange chicken is very good Mushrooms chicken is bomb I got pineapple chicken teriyaki chicken and BBQ pork. Love this teriyaki chicken is bomb love how it's grilled and then mixed with a teriyaki sauce with a ting of sweetness. Pineapple chicken is fresh with a sauce that give you thank mmm I want more. The bbq chicken is great with good flavor not over bearing like some. I like the options of a vegetable base is really good Customer service is on the ball. And this place is busy seating is good can be 2 to 4 or even 10 if you put the tables together. Can soda or fountain drinks and they sell a chili sauce hmm. Kaowok - Downey, CA I ordered the 2-item combo with steamed rice and chow mein, choosing orange chicken and BBQ pork as my main dishes. The portions were generous and packed with meat, which was definitely a plus. Unfortunately, the flavor was just average for me. Needed something quick and didn't expect much from this place but saw it was busy. Well, I got way less than expected. I grew up with depression-era grandparents and the norm was to eat whatever was in front of you, especially if you chose it- today I couldnt and that is rare. The noodles were stale, the fire-grilled chicken was..weird (the texture was fatty but the meat wasn't), and the orange chicken had NO taste other than one of slightly charred meat. If you look at Pho restaurant prices, the 3 flavor soup is a better deal and a satisfying meal. April 2026 is chilly, get the soup, and be content, and full! I've been coming here for years, and I am just now writing this review. This place is very good, and I like the fact that they give you great portions, unlike this one place I know **Cough Cough** Panda Express! I think the people that complain about lack of flavor in these reviews are so used to the high sodium Chinese food places that are out there that when they try this place, they are disappointed. As a general rule, I try to stay away from high sodium foods and use salt sparingly in my own personal cooking at home. That is probably why I actually am able to taste food for what it is, rather than the high salt content that most people are used to. This place, in my opinion, has good flavors. The only thing I do come across all the time is an issue on how they cook their beef. They are so quick to make beef broccoli that you will notice the beef sauce isn't broken down to complete liquid. Instead, you will see some globs here and there as demonstrated in one of the pictures I attached. These little globs are concentrated with flavor so I can see how that could be disgusting for some people but it's not overwhelming. Still, David Ramsey would crack that whip in a heartbeat if he ever saw some crap like that come out of his kitchen, you best believe! And I made sure I posted one picture right next to the KaoWok bag as proof that I went there because you know some of these business owners be trippin trying to call Yelp and get reviews deleted and stuff. Never before had we been to this fast food place called Kaowok Chinese Kitchen at Downey Landing in Downey, CA. It'll be the last time. Not because of the staff. They were nice. Gave me extra jalapeños when I divulged I was glad they had them. Less than mild jalapeños, though. The portions were hefty. The food overall was just not all that appetizing. The shrimp with my three-entree combo ($10.75) was super fishy smelling, head-feet-and-tail still intact, and not deveined. My daughter opted for the shrimp with lobster sauce ($11). Neither the soup or the shrimp was good. The special item which we waited a good while on to get prepped stunk up the house for a couple of days. The beef, chow mein, and fried rice were all decent. As mentioned earlier, I doubt I'll go back, but if I did I'd probably stick to those three items. We ordered at 4:22PM and no one was in there except us, then BOOM an early dinner crowd formed. Came in today around dinner time and found that this place that typically has a line out the door was pretty much empty. I ordered my combos went home and fed the family. The food is still good, portions are not what I'm used to from this place but the price is still fair. I had a #2 & #3 combo and was able to feed my family for under $28 bucks. Go to the golden arches and you'll quickly find out you'll need at least $40 bucks to feed a family in this economy. read more

Not sure if this is a valid criticism, but I came in on a Lenten Friday to get some shrimp entree for lunch (maybe like a honey walnut shrimp), but they didn't have any readily available! But other than that, this place is alright. Nothing to rave about, nothing horrible. They're just okay. Very generic, Chinese American spot. Their chow mein lacked a bit of flavor, which is a bummer.
