I'd long heard that Kane was the reigning champion of New Jersey beer, but having taken so solidly to Carton these past few years, I was skeptical about whether it'd win me over. Well, I finally got to visit Kane on 5/31, as our schedule allowed my friend and me a couple of pre-concert stops while heading up the coast towards Starland Ballroom in Sayreville. Now I could make up my mind once and for all...game on!
As for the location, I can't add anything that everybody else hasn't already said. The best description I've read so far is that it's a dentist's office, and very well may have been in a past life. Upon entering the establishment (a converted reception area greets you), I immediately got panicky about getting a lecture from my dentist about eating too many Caramel Apples.
The first room you step into is a smaller bar area with some taps and merchandise. The fella behind the bar told us a little about Kane, most of which I quickly forgot, as I was concentrating only on the word "flights." Eventually, I heard some combination of "flights" and "next room," so I left a vapor trail high-tailing it into the next room, knocking over an old man in the process.
The "next room" is a high-ceiling, industrial factory type of deal, with a long bar stretching along the right side of the room. A giant rack of barrels, going almost to the ceiling if not all the way, lined the wall to our immediate right.
A bunch of brewing equipment stretched from the left side of the room all the way to the back wall. In the open space in the middle of the room were maybe 8 (?) wooden benches, and closer to the far end of the room were a bunch of barrels for the non-lazy clientele who have no problem standing and drinking. My friend and I approached the bar to see what our flight options are. It was more than reasonable: $4 for 4 samples. You pick the four you want and write it on a little card, and they serve it up on a long piece of wood with the slots numbered to correspond with the card.
They had nine beers on tap, so we tackled four distincts apiece, and I snarled "I'll be back for YOU eventually!" at the lone holdout on the chalkboard, an imperial red ale.
Being a proud lazy person, I suggested to my friend that we sit at one of the tables instead of standing, and he obliged. And, with that, we tackled our flights...iPhones in hand, Untappd opened and ready for action.
The IPAs were solid, but I'm not a fan of blondes, so I didn't much care for that. (For the record, I not a fan of blonde BEERS, but my wife is blonde and I think she's the most gorgeous person who ever lived. She also monitors my Yelp activity, on an unrelated note.)
Then we got on to the dark stuff, and here's where my day went from "good" to "YOU'VE GOTTA BE F***ING KIDDING ME!" Their Morning Bell, a tasty porter, was the last in my flight, and I had high hopes for the trade-off with my friend for his samples.
After the swap, the winning streak continued with their Parhelion double-IPA. Then came a defining beer moment for me: Kane Mexican Brunch. Words cannot describe how incredible this beer was, and indeed, the only things coming out of my mouth after the first sip were moans of ecstacy. The first sounded something like "Guhuhuhuhu-hu-hu-hu-hu-hu-hu-huhuhuhuhuhuaaaaaooooooooohhhh..." and the rest varied only in pitch and duration.
After that sample-turned-lovemaking session, I got to try both the Silent Nights (Imperial stout) and Solitude (Belgian strong ale), which may not have reached MB levels of awesomeness, but still got my attention with their flavors and intensity.
I went back to the bar to grab the straggler imperial red ale and another Mexican Brunch. Individual small pours varied between $2-$3, and I think the two additionals only ran me $5 total. (I also lied when the bartender asked if I was "the guy who was moaning over there five minutes ago.")
Red ales are a tough sell for me, but this was tolerable as far as this style goes. I've certainly had a lot worse.
After finishing the last of our beers, my friend and I compared notes: The "worst" stuff we had was certainly drinkable, albeit unremarkable. But most of the stuff we had was easily four-star ratings or higher (using the Untapped rating system). Morning Bell (4.5 stars) and Mexican Brunch (5 stars) were unquestionably the standouts, though.
We returned our glasses, and headed back out to the first bar, where I purchased a Kane Brewing Company T-shirt. The shirts are soft, but run a little small, so I had to give mine to my wife (hon, you're not still mad about the "blonde" misunderstanding above, are you?)
Kane Brewing Company...you beautiful bastards. I love your beer. I love your setup. I love...YOU. That might be an awkward thing to say after having only known you for about five days, but there you have it.
Sorry about making things awkward. read more
