I was pleasantly surprised at just how awesome Battle River Brewing is. It is located right in downtown Toms River, a block from the namesake river and the site of an American Revolutionary War attack on a blockhouse by the British army in 1782. There is plenty of street parking, as well as a nearby lot with four hour parking. My girlfriend and I visited on a Friday evening in August. They have lots of seating both inside and out. I was very impressed by the selection of beers on offer: a whopping 26 beers and one hard seltzer, all despite the small size of the brewery. The variety was impressive as well. I've been to a lot of NJ breweries, and I saw a lot of beer styles here that I rarely, if ever, see at other places. This included a Japanese rice lager, an ESB, a white stout on nitro, a black lager, and a red wine ale. The real standouts for me were the Bluecoat (blueberry blonde), the Bayonet (honey stout on nitro), and the Red Headed Vixen (aforementioned red wine ale). My girlfriend and I each had a flight and a full pour, and we loved everything we tried. We live over an hour away, so we can't be regulars, but definitely hope to come back someday soon. read more

Great beers, nice place to hang with friends. Food available from a few places downtown. My only complaint is their website. Unless you are on social media there is no way to see events! Went for the first time with my partner. The place looked great right in the heart of downtown cool little patio out on the sidewalk. But maybe we did it wrong? We approached the tap guy outside and asked him how seating and service worked told us to sit any where. Then that was it. We sat in a corner awkwardly for 10 mins just exchanging glances till we left. Don't know if we had a server or we were supposed to go and order our drinks and bring them to the table. The menu looked cool but didn't understand if it was to be brought to us or if we called the number on the menu and ordered. There was at least one server we saw. read more

TOMS RIVER: right on Main Street in downtown Toms River is Battle River Brewing and they allow leashed-dogs inside! They have over 20 beers on tap with plenty of variety to please anyone. You can bring your own food and there are some nice places in town to order from; menus are available at the bar. We were impressed with the ambience: cozy yet lively and family friendly! The bartenders are great too. An interesting note, you can boat in and dock at Huddy Park! NJ is so lucky to have so many great breweries in the state. read more

The Bluecoat has to be one of my favorite beers I've ever sipped- infused with blueberries but not too sweet, perfect blonde ale with a beautiful color! I liked the ambiance of this brewery, including the cute street full of shops and eateries that it is located on. I also found the beer-tender to be quite friendly and I do have to give it props for being very dog friendly! However, it was my least favorite in terms of flavor of all 4 breweries we visited that day. I went with a lager that honestly tasked a lot more like a pilsner to me, which isn't bad, but just not what I wanted. I also tried the root beer cider, which was, interesting to say the least. I liked the concept, but didn't quite hit the mark. I think the biggest turn off was that it was defintiely the most expensive of all the breweries as well, which was mentioned throughout every party at our table. read more

My partner ordered a flight and only liked 1 out of the 4 beers. He's an IPA guy and said most of the IPAs just wasn't what he typically would expect in terms of the taste. I had the warm cider, which was nice. Our bill came out to about $22 for the flight and cider - I grew up in Central Jersey, but have lived in San Francisco for the past 11 years so unsure if this type of pricing reflects the quality for this area. Ambiance was pretty chill, but there was a 13 original colonies US flag behind the bar, along with another US flag towards the back. We absolutely adore this place. Wife is a big fan of the seltzer's but watch out they are strong ...I'm a big sour fan so I usually go with #13 Courthouse. They do do flights but only when they aren't crazy busy. You can ask to sample any of their amazing beverages and you can order from nearby restaurants which are also worth a try!! read more

Wow. We've been to quite a few breweries throughout NJ and this is definitely in the top 5. They have many more beer and seltzer selections than most. My son and I had 3 flights each which is something we never do for the fact most breweries don't have the selection. I'm not going over all of them but our favorites were the Blue Coat and Mariner. I don't usually get fruit beer but the Blue Coat was good. But I can say every beer we had was a winner. My wife enjoyed the seltzers. read more

the place itself is very clean, the atmosphere is great, tha lady at the bar was really nice. the sours mostly taste like sours, some has too much acidity almost like vinegar. so if youre into sours, make sure you eat first. its a place to hang out, get maybe a flight or two. i dont recommend a full pour. read more

The brewery is nice. Good beer and they clearly took their time to create a specific ambiance. We were however disappointed with a number of things. First of all, nobody inside was wearing masks. Even the bartenders had them pulled down below their chins as they served. I can totally forgive a staff that isn't going to police patrons about wearing masks, I get it, you aren't their parents. But when you're serving food or beverages it's courteous in these times to have your mouth and nose covered for the safety of others. My husband and I ordered a pint for him and a flight for me, the total of which came to about $22, so after tip we're close to $30. Neither of us were drinking pours with high ABVs or limited edition specialty beers that tend to be on the higher priced side, so this seemed a little steep for 32 oz of beer. But I'm happy to pay higher pricing for a quality product/experience so shrugged it off as the price is what it is. We grabbed a seat and shortly we noticed that my husbands beer had been poured with so much head that it settled into not much more than half a pour, so he didn't get close to a full beer. This is where I got a bit agitated. If you're charging $8-9 for a beer, it really should be a priority to make sure it's being poured full and correctly. I could absolutely see if they were slammed and running around, and in their rush this was an oversight. But it was pretty quiet, with just a handful of patrons. There really wasn't a good excuse to be handing off beers with four inches of head on them. I will say that the beers were pretty good. We just left feeling like the servicing was off, especially in relation to the higher pricing. read more
