A modest Asian bakery in the Dun Huang Plaza offering tastier, lighter, more creative, and even healthier breads and other baked goods. Visiting Chinatown on a weekly basis, I've been meaning to make my way to Kamalan Bakery for the past few months. It's not that it's inaccessible though - in fact, it's located at the NE end corner of Dun Huang Plaza (right by Jungle Cafe and Tea Bar) and its large white sign is clearly visible from Bellaire Blvd. After my hair appointment at Jessica Hair Studio, I asked Jessica herself whether it'd be worth going to Kamalan, and she replied, "Oh definitely! For some reason, I feel healthier when I eat their bread. It's lighter, softer... and it seems like they use fresh ingredients without being to sugary. If you go, you have to try their apple walnut bread - I get that every time!" And that was enough to convince me to try many of their freshly baked Asian breads. The bakery itself it small, but they have plenty of options for you to choose from. For those who are unfamiliar with Asian bakeries, Kamalan (like all other similar bakeries) is mostly a self-serve place. All you do is take a pair of plastic tongs and a nicely lined tray located next to the entrance and grab whatever your fancy. Once you're done feasting with your eyes and filling up the tray to its rim, you bring it up to the cash register, where a friendly assistant (who does speak English) will ring you up and start packaging each baked creation into an individual sleeve. (TIP: it's a cash-only place for purchases under $10, with each bread between $1-3.) The attendant will even let you know which breads you've selected were just out of the oven so that you don't make the rookie mistake of completely sealing those breads in their sleeves. What sets Kamalan apart from other Asian bakeries is that they post a schedule on their door detailing when each of their 30+ baked creations is ready for sale on a daily basis (within a 2-hour window). Therefore, you may have to wait until 1pm for that tasty apple-walnut bread to be ready for you to devour, even though doors open at 8am. But on to the breads! I've already been there twice and tried a total of 6 breads (yep, fatty here!). The texture of their breads are consistently crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside. Big winners are the mango cream cheese bread (giant bread 5" in diameter with a filling similar to the icing for toaster strudels - no joke), the green onion/pork floss bread (a savory selection with green onions and pork floss braided into the bread itself - yum!), and their buttermilk puff bread (a bun stuffed with a delicious but not-to-sweet buttermilk filling and topped with very crispy puff pastry). Healthier options include the apple-walnut bread, walnut bread, burdock bread, and pumpkin bread. If breads aren't your thing, they also have egg tarts (though not authentic), pineapple cakes, cookies, jelly cake rolls, and custom cakes starting at $30. read more

This new Asian bakery is located next to Tea Bar in Dun Huang Plaza. This plaza already has King Bakery and Six Ping, but Kamalan fits in pretty well between to two opposite ends of the Asian bakery spectrum. I came here around 11am on a Saturday, and the cases were full of bread. The goods here are slightly pricier than King (still cheap, though), but the presentation is less bare-bones. Kamalan has a greater selection than King but less than Six Ping; however, there seems to be careful thought put into each type of baked good offered. I very much enjoyed the slightly sweet black sesame bread and the savory pork sung and green onion bread. The sausage bread (with mini-hot dogs) and coconut bread were pretty good, too. I was not a big fan of the egg tart with the non-flaky shortcrust crust, though. However, the most remarkable part of my experience was how helpful and friendly the staff were; I started to doubt that I was even in Chinatown, until I had to pay in cash since my purchase was under $10. read more

I have been dying to try the Taiyaki Ice Cream in Chinatown and finally got to go this weekend! Kamalan Bakery is a Taiwanese Bakery with all sorts of yummy baked goods, desserts and cakes and they are the only place in Houston so far that I have seen so far that offers this type of "fish cone ice cream" dessert so being a dessert loving pescatarian I HAD to try it! I got the green tea flavor, and on the inside of the cone was red bean custard. It was not one of the top desserts I have had in Chinatown. The taste was mediocre, I think it could have been a lot better. The cone was a bit soft for my liking. It was worth the experience, maybe they will improve the dessert in the future! read more

The whole place smells amazing and it's incredibly tough to maintain self control with all the options available, especially since the prices are so reasonable, too! Though I was a little disappointed they didn't have the red bean donuts this particular day, my sorrows were quickly fixed with a large coconut/butter pastry for only $1.75! I was just here trying to buy some bakery and I noticed the staff harassing a customer. In my experience, if the staff have any issues, you should resolve it calmly and to the side. They made me very uneasy witnessing a customer being harass by the staff. It really turn me off and I decided to go to another place. read more

The baked goods are excellent. Airy and good texture. The flavors are also quite good. The variety is pretty good. Different goods come out throughout the day, and there's a posted schedule on the front door. The prices are similar to others. The service is fast, friendly, and attentive. For the same products, I much prefer this place than Six Ping. However, Six Ping does have a few more items that you can't get here. Hopefully this place will expand, both in locations and varieties. read more

Was so disappointed. A lot of desserts on here might be from yrs ago because i didnt find any when i was there. I tried their fish-like dessert and was so disappointed in it. Love this place! The pork sung bun is delicious! Milk bun is too! Lots of their stuff are LOL! I would drop by here all of the time to get some pastries to pack for school or to snack on at home! Their cake looks delicious and very pretty but have yet to try! They also have that fish shaped cone looking thing where they put ice cream in it. I never tried it lol but it's nice for pictures haha The only down side to this place is parking!!! A lot of times I drop by, there isn't any parking space so I end up just leaving :( so one star off! Oh and there's a 10$ minimum for cards!! read more

Absolutely loved it. We're very picky about sweets and I love dessert. We haven't been to Chinatown in a while so visited some our favorite places while we're here from Austin. King Bakery was sold out, so we came here as a backup. So glad we did! Prices were great as usual. The mango cream cheese bun is fantastic. Total surprise. Very light and not too sweet but tasty. There's something special about the way they bake their goods here. The bread is very soft with a slight hint of sweet. It works really well for both their sweet and savory goodies! In my mind, all the other Chinese bakeries are very similar to each other, but this place really stands out from the pack. You can tell everything is fresh and the prices are great. This is the place to go for fresh Asian goodies! Super affordable breads and yummies. Came here to try their promotional ice cream fish inspired by the famous Korean street food. It wasn't the best honestly. For $5, it wasn't big and not worth it. We got two flavors, red bean and green tea. What can I say, it was just hype and it'll be hyped unless you try it and see that it wasn't all that good. They have egg custard at the bottom, the fish weren't crunchy and have no flavor and the ice cream wasn't anything special but hey, it's cute for Instagram just not cute for my wallet for a tiny fish. I came here a few times already and finally thought I write a review. This place is located in the corner next to Jungle Cafe. Surprised to find two bakeries close together but Kamalan Bakery has a different type of feel, in which you find most in California bakeries that I have been to, such as 85 degrees. When you walk in, you have the trays and clamps to use to go "shop" for your bake goods. Kamalan offers a variety of types of bake goods: sweet and savory. Compared to Six Ping bakery, it reminds me a lot like them. They even have similar bake goods such as the custard bun, small sausage roll, pork sung bun and so on. You get my point. If you are a bakery junky like me, this place is heaven! My favorite sweet item right now is oddly their cream bread long shaped like a french bread but filled with a sweet type of cream that is not too sweet that gets overbearing. All the pastries and such are individually wrapped and if they are not, they will wrap it when you check out. The reason I took away one star is that the customer service here is hit or miss. One time I get a friendly lady and another time I get a girl who just ignores you until you are ready to check out and even then still looks at you with a nonchalant face... Also I was disappointed that when I came around 4p today they did not have that many selections and they close at 9pm. I also like that they except card but of course there is a minimum of 10$. Simply an amazing bakery! We arrived at 10:30 am right around when it opened and all the bread was freshly brought out. They have the staple green onion and shredded pork buns as well as my favorite sweet buns. While we were at the store, they brought out a tray of fresh mango cream buns that were still warm to the touch. OMG this bun was so soft, chewy, with just the right amount of sweetness. I couldn't help but devour it right in the middle of the store. I would do anything to get a bakery like this closer to my home! read more

This review is only for the fish shaped ice cream thing (Taiyaki? I think that's what it's called) I saw some pictures on instagram and decided I had to try it! I chose the custard variety with plum ice cream. The plum ice cream was actually pretty good, but the vanilla ice cream was extremely freezer burned. The fish thing itself was just like this really dense mildly sweet cake type concoction. I'm not sure what I expected but it felt like I was eating ice cream with dry bread. It was also really small. At the bottom once you finish the ice cream, there was some custard which was actually pretty good. Also the fish thing was much smaller than I expected it to be. They decorated with ready whip, 1 pocky stick and these mini marshmallows. So the end result does end up looking cute, and definitely worth a picture or two. But for $4.75 (cash only), it just wasn't worth it. Basically, if you just want to get a cute picture, go for it! If you're actually looking for a quality dessert, I'd skip it. This is a great little bakery that I felt I needed to show love to. It sits quietly in the front and doesn't ever appear to be as busy as someone of tbd other bakeries, which is actually a plus for me. People don't know what they're missing. I can go in and order really quickly and not worry to much. They have a great selection and also, they have plenty of different items so you could go to one of the other bakeries and then come here and come here out with plenty of unique and different things. They have all kinds of items, pork buns, pizza breads, sandwiches, buns filled with cream cheese and fruit, buns filled with matcha, fresh breads like baguettes, cheese cakes, egg tarts, macarons, cookies and so much more. It is really easy to pop in here and grab a quick snack if you have a dollar on you. The only problem is you need cash if you spend less than $10 but that's really easy to hit anyway because of all the stuff they have. Also, if you need one big item to set this place apart and use for a good Instagram photo, it's their ice cream taiyaki. I decided to order this the last time I came after coming here many times and seeing it. Taiyaki is a pastry made using basic waffle or pancake batter and cooked it a mold and it looks like a fish. Already cool enough. It is then filled with something, traditionally red bean, but places serve it with other fillings. Here they have the classic red bean but also green tea and custard, so there is bound to be a flavor you'll like. Also, there aren't many places in Houston that have taiyaki, I can only recall ever seeing it once at the Japanese festival. On top of the taiyaki itself, they pull ice cream, having it come out of the fishes mouth. They then stick a piece of pocky and some marshmallows on top and you have a good looking photo. You hold the fish and use a tiny spoon they give you to eat the ice cream. They have several flavors of ice cream, but I chose red bean to go with the Red filling. This thing tasted great. The ice cream tasted good, the taiyaki was crispy and soft and tasted great and the red bean filling was great too. I like the taste of red bean and nothing was overly sweet and neither the ice cream nor the filling had hardly any of the bean texture you find in red bean products, they just tasted smooth and refreshing and delicious. I say if you have time to kill and want something to snack on while walking around this block of Chinatown, grab one and go take a relaxing walk. But don't forget to take some fresh baked goods to eat at home later! read more

I came here at about 9pm on a weeknight, and was pleasantly surprised that selection was still ample. We got an assortment of bread/pastries to try, and enjoyed it all quite a bit. The bread is fluffy and fresh, and the filling is generous. The curry puff pastry, pineapple cake, and coffee almond cookies were awesome. Prices are pretty comparable to Six Ping, which has been my go-to Asian bakery for the past several years. The cashier at the counter was very nice, and took the time to individually bag all of the pastries that didn't come pre-wrapped, even when I insisted it would be fine to toss them in one bag. I was pretty positive they wouldn't make it home anyways. Sure enough, I started digging into my treats in the car. I am pretty sure I will be back relatively soon since it's just a few doors down from Sharetea. read more

After looking for a bakery to buy a last minute birthday cake - Yelp lead me here. I was looking specifically for a bakery with cakes that weren't overly sweet. When I arrived, they only had on 6" cake on display and two larger cakes. I was a bit skeptical about buying the cake here initially because of the lack of choices. I ended up taking a chance and buying the small black Forrest cake. It was nicely decorated, and the lady at the counter added in some candles, a cake knife, and put a happy birthday decoration on the cake. I was a bit worried because the black Forrest cake is a chocolate cake and I usually don't go for chocolate cakes (usually way to sweet for my taste) - but the Yelp reviews convinced me otherwise. The baker didn't disappoint! The cake was very moist and definitely not overly sweet. It wasn't even too rich like some chocolate cakes and it didn't make you feel sick after a couple bites. The icing wasn't too sweet either. The fruit decorations added a nice freshness, and the cherries inside the cake were good. For $20, this cake definitely fit everything I was looking for. Probably my favorite bakery in Bellaire. I've gotten the 6-inch pandan cake with fruit filling twice the past week and can't wait for my next excuse to get another (maybe this week mwahaha). Slightly cheaper than Six Ping, cake is softer, more moist, not too sweet, and fruit tastes fresher. They use to carry this delicious potato and egg salad bread, not sure why but they discontinued it. So sad! More people need make some requests so they can bring it back! Holy moly this place is awesome! Walked in sorta just wondering where the amazing smell was coming from, I'm so glad we did. Cream bread = amazing! Fresh coconut bread and their breads with blueberries and cream cheese and mango cream cheese were excellent! My boyfriend loves their red bean and green tea bread. We literally will make it a point to try and come back as often as possible! The ladies inside who helped us were really sweet and explained everything! Oh and their cakes look amazing! New place in town. The bakery looked really nice and the smell of the whole room was soooo goodddd. Their savory breads looked fantastic with a lot of veggie and meat inside a half of the giant bread- which I didnt try. And the hokkaido cream cake ( not for sure the name ) is a must try. The cake is really soft and has amazingg flavor of eggs, butter and hokkaido milk. The eggtart was just fine, if you are expecting a wonderful eggtart like me, then you would feel kinda disappointed. And the raisin roll wasn't good, kinda plain and dry, I couldn't taste the flavor. So maybe I should try the savories next time. read more

Must try this huge fluffy soufflé looking thing! It's a fluffy sponge cake on top and bread with a crushed lightly sweetened crumble inside that's like the filling in the almond croissants, so good!!
