Pineapple bun

On Good Friday at 10 AM, the business was pretty packed with people eating and picking up bulk orders. I rarely see a fried sesame ball that seems like a fried ball with a soft red bean-filled rice cake inside. It's like a big deep-fried tangyuan. The taro roll (typical bun covered with sesame seeds) had a thin but very creamy layer of soft taro inside. The pineapple bun's crust was fresh and crispy. I think this was the most content I've seen the back and front crew.

King Bakery is a staple asian bakery in Chinatown. It evokes a very nostalgic feeling for me since I grew up eating their bread. In fact, nothing much has changed about the taste of the bread and the ambiance. Make sure to bring cash so you can buy the bread. Luckily, amidst all the changing food trends and increased prices, King Bakery has maintained its low pricing with items around $1.5 1) Pineapple Bun - The bolo bun is a classic! Top crust of buttery sweet crumble and a fluffy light bun 2) BBQ Pork Bun - My personal favorite. It is a bun with a great chew factor and it has sweet bbq pork filling. Great flavors 3) Pork Sung Bun - A pork floss mayo mixture on the top, so it's slightly sweet and salty. 4) Egg Tart - A lot of people's favorite! To me it is pretty good (I still prefer Eck's, but it is solid) 5) Curry Bun - My dad's favorite. Good filling 6) Raisin Bread - The flavor and texture of the bread is simple and good with a sprinkling of sweet raisins. I think King Bakery is one of the best mom-and-pop shops that serves traditional cantonese style baked goods. It's a no-frills type of place that deserves a try!

Stop going to the typical 85degrees, Tous Les Jours or Paris baguette. Only well known amongst the Asian community of Houston - this place is everything you look for in an authentic Chinese bakery: tasty and cheap with consistent quality. When I say Mom and Pops Hole in the wall bakery, I mean it LITERALLY. If you look at my photos - this shop is incredibly easy to miss if you're not truly looking for it. You would never walk in and think they're open based on the empty shelves but that's honestly part of the charm. There's always a line of people but 10+ breads at a time. Don't waste your time on the steamed buns but their baked BBQ pork bun has sooooo much filling compared to other bakeries. Their pineapple milk custard bun is another favorite if you want something sweet Note: this place is cash only and runs out of bread by the end of the day so make sure you come prepared and early

In the words of my uncle, "Walk straight to the register. Don't look at the walls, don't look at anything. Order the bbq bun and walk right back out. Best bbq bun you'll ever have." LOL okay so he was right. I agree. It can be pretty packed depending on the time of day but I think they prefer cash over card. $2.00 for a bbq bun and the portion size is about the size of my hand spread out. Delicious. Sometimes there can be a wait and some things run out quickly but when I was told the wait time was 30 minutes, I got my buns in 15 minutes and they were so fresh!!!

found the best baked bbq pork buns in houston, and for $2.15 they're a deal!! came here on a saturday around 11:30 am and the line was out the door for a good reason. everyone and their moms come here for the bbq buns and pineapple buns. they sell out so quickly it seems like they don't even have time to stock the shelves. the bbq buns were so hot and fresh and not too bready, making the ratio of bbq pork to bread almost perfect. if only they could combine the pineapple buns with bbq pork like the famous nyc bakery. if you're looking for a snack or a quick bite on the go, i'd recommend trying this place! their whole menu of pastries is sub $3, so i'll definitely be back to try other pastries. only catch is to bring cash as it is a cash only establishment.

Cantonese style bakeries are not much of a thing in Houston anymore, but I'm so glad King Bakery is still holding down the fort at Dunhuang Plaza. Their Chinese name ("好日子餅家") is more akin to "Good Day Bakery" and their pastries have been a hit in the Chinatown area for close to two decades. The seating is super minimal, usually occupied by a number of Chinese uncles sitting around and sipping the tea. It's a takeout joint, and depending on how early one might be, sometimes the pastries haven't made it past the counter to be on the display. They might just be sitting on a rack waiting to be eaten and the "menu" is usually written on a notebook sheet with ever evolving prices. Their pineapple crusted buns are dense, flakey, and even a bit fluffy. The fillings could range from custard to bbq pork, but is probably the best version I've seen in the city. I think their coconut buttermilk buns are also stellar as are the taro / red bean paste buns. Egg tarts are on the larger side and have an adequate amount of sweetness. It still doesn't beat their rival ECK, but it's a suitable alternative. The hot dog buns / in a blanket might feel kolache-like since we're in Texas, but it's probably the least exciting pastry. It's cash only and the prices are now in the $1.60-2.00 range. The "combo" bao (banh bao) is now $2.75. The staff is mostly Cantonese speaking, but I believe English is no problem. Parking can be a challenge on the weekends and they are open till around 4pm each day, while closed on Mondays. The most ideal time to come is before noon while the buns are still available.

If you ever watch the TV show, diners, drive-ins, and dives this is definitely the category of a dive it probably at one point had people that would sit there and eat the bakery goods however, now it's basically people that grab it to go note you need to bring cash. This place does not accept any kind of plastic. It is cash only. The prices are an appropriate price point. The flavors are fresh and delicious even at the option today that they had some leftover steamed barbecue buns that I could take home and steam myself there they were cold but totally worth it. The atmosphere is rundown although you're gonna grab this to go. the staff are nice and friendly, but definitely in a hurry even on a Friday at 11:30 there was a line about 6 to 8 people deep so you Be patient in parking in this retail strip mall can get very busy although there is a two or three story parking garages next-door. I highly recommend this place and look forward to coming back .

King Bakery is a small shop located in the bustling red plaza in Chinatown, Houston. The inside is very small and dim, and I thought it was closed for the day with the empty shelves and low lighting. However, when you walk in, there is a couple of older people ordering tons of buns! The person in front of me ordered 24 pork buns. No wonder the shelves were empty, and I can definitely see why. The buns are super delicious! I got three pork buns and two pineapple buns. The pineapple buns were still being baked, so we waited for 20 minutes. When we came back, we tried getting more, but the older people in front of us ordered the rest ;-; Their buns are so popular that the moment it comes out the oven, it is sold! The pineapple buns were warm. The inside was fluffy, and it was crispy on the top. I think it has to be one of the BEST pineapple buns I have ever had, especially when it is fresh out the oven. Please please try their pineapple buns!! The pork buns was also delicious, and the inside is perfect! The outside of the pork bun reminds me of a Texas Roadhouse roll, so think of their pork bun as a butter roll with char siu pork filling inside. Everything is also super cheap and less than $2. Overall, this place is definitely a hole in the wall with great prices and great buns!

This is an old bakery that hasn't been renovated. Though there are display cases at the front and at the sides of the store, there isn't any bread displayed. The menu is simply a piece of paper right at the front where the cash register is. The options offered aren't a lot but what they have, is sufficient for me. I bought pineapple milk pastry bun, taro bun, BBQ bun, red bean bun, pineapple bun, pork sung bun, and pineapple egg custard bun. The buns were huge but for the buns with fillings (red bean bun, taro bun, and pineapple egg custard bun), they were in need of for more fillings. The BBQ bun was the only one that had the right amount of filling. The fillings were delicious though. The taro filling was real taro which was super good. My favorite bun was the pineapple milk pastry bun. The crust at the top of the bun was delicious. Warning: for all the pineapple buns, the crusts fall off the top easily. It is best to eat these buns in a bowl so as not to waste any of the goodness. I came here at 8.30am but their egg tarts weren't ready yet. The steam BBQ bun wasn't ready for sale too. I was told the egg tarts will be ready at 9.30am. I would assume that would be the case every time. Note to self.

I came here on Christmas on a whim!! Happy since everything at around noon is fresh! Unfortunately yes this is one of the few places that is open today! I didn't get any egg tarts but looked pretty good today. The cashier lady was quick to check everyone out and pulled breads off the cooling rack. Reminds me of the Krispe Kreme when the donuts were really hot but Asian breads. I love the bun part but the char siu meat is lesser than before don't blame them because of inflation. Why can't we just pay more...for better stuff!! Stop being so cheap.

Extra BBQ buns reheated/air fried at home the next day for a crunchier outer layer and just as tasty inner.
Jennifer W.

From the empty storefront, it might be hard for a visiting tourist to tell how popular the place is, but a local would know that this place is a must if you're looking for the freshest buns out of the oven. They carry a variety of baked goods from egg tarts to cookies to the classic buns (BBQ, custard, pineapple, hot dog, etc.). Please note that the buns are made fresh and sometimes the supply cannot meet the demand, so you may find that a wait is necessary for another fresh batch to come out the oven. However, the buns are well worth the wait. If you do find yourself in luck for some of the BBQ and pineapple buns, don't hesitate to buy more than you can eat in the moment. Pro tip: if you have an air fryer at home, you can buy a week's supply of breakfast and heat up using the air fryer for a fresh out of the oven taste.

Inside you will also find French pastries, coffees and teas, gelato, milkshakes, sandwiches and macaroons. I felt the most interesting items were the French pastries as they are cute and tasty as well. Also, they plate the pastries nicely when you dine in as an added bonus. I tried the Chocolate Royale and the Ruby. Chocolate Royale - a petit chocolate mouse slice with flat chocolate panels along the sides. It is delicate and tasty. If you're a chocolate lover, this is definitely up your alley. Ruby - visually this looks like a strawberry Hershey kiss, with red powder on the exterior and a top piece of foil to resemble foil on the wrapper of a hershey kiss. Inside, it's filled with a strawberry cream and has a chocolate base. I just wish there was more chocolate in this one. They have plenty of seating inside as well as along the sidewalk. Inside you have the more fancy tables, whereas outside, they're more weather resistant and not as upscale in appearance. The soft drinks to drink along with your sweets are in a cold case along the hotel side of the space and you just take them to the register as you order. One of the most surprising things when you come here are the relatively affordable prices as you might expect them to be more for being a coffee shop attached to a 5-star hotel with a helipad.

What's nudged this place up to 5 stars for me is they have really improved their coffee game, specifically their quality of cappuccino's. Previously it seemed more of latte, but now to me its a legit Capp. Their choice of pastries hasn't changed, which gives you a good assortment of choices and they have added an additional barista or server which also is a nice touch for service. The only niggling items, parking can be tough, so you'll have to either walk a block or be quick to find a place close by. Regardless, definitely give this place a go to come for a pastry and coffee.

I also heard great things about the mango mochi so we couldn't leave without those. Thankfully they still had some in stock. I heard they sell out quickly especially on weekends. My husband also got 2 savory pastries (I forgot what they were called and I forgot to take a picture) and those were yummy too. Perfectly flakey crust just like the egg tarts. We wanted to get sesame balls but they were sold out. Customer service was great. The guy that took our order was very nice. It was pretty busy but he moved through the line quickly. There's some seating inside if you want to eat there. Prices are very reasonable at $2 each for the mochi and egg tarts. The savory pastries were $3. It's located in a shared lot/area. Parking can be tight and limited on a busy weekend day but they have parking right out front for the Eck bakery customers. Also note that if you pay with card it's a 2.5% charge so cash is better if you have it. We didn't but we know now for future. We had a great experience here and will definitely be back.
