One of the rare places that serves Korean food in Grand Rapids. Some of the dishes have been Americanized (bulgogi burrito), but some dishes are still authentic to the Korean food I grew up eating. The sundubu jjigae (which is silken tofu soup) is exactly what I used to get when I was a kid growing up in LA. The side dishes (banchan) were kind of mid, but kimchi, fish cakes, and broccoli are exactly that: kimchi, fish cakes, and broccoli. Potato pancake was heavy on the mozz, but yummy and filling. We also visited for Poutine Week GR and they participate every year with a lot of fun different variations of a Korean-style meat with tater tots. Good spot for Korean food, but also a good spot for just a coffee and to study. Floor to ceiling windows in the main area to sit and work along with some more backroom seating that's not as sunny, but a good location nonetheless.
Still a great spot to grab some Korean-inspired noms and your coffeehouse faves without reparking your car. For me, it's a bulgogi burrito and a large Americano. Thin slices of sweet and savory beef, packed with rice and swaddled tightly in a flour tortilla. Comes with a tasty side salad. They might have been spread thin because several tables hadn't been bussed. I begged for a rag so I could wipe down a table. Figured it's worth pitching in for cravable flavors. :-)

Kaffeine has incredible Korean food and you need to check this place out immediately if you haven't already! Love that you order at the counter here and can seat yourself. The decor and atmosphere is clean and modern. Every time I've been helped, the staff is always accommodating and so nice. I love the breakfast sandwiches here, the coffee, and my bf really loves the Korean hot dog they offer! Check this place out if you're ever in the neighborhood!
We were craving some ramen, and finally got in to try Kaffeine Place! We both got beef ramen, but my husband ordered his extra spicy and I got mine mild. We were a little confused by the set up at first- you walk in and there's a counter and coffee equipment, but you order your food here as well, take a number, and sit down, and they bring out the food. It's a pretty casual spot. The ramen was great though! We loved the slice of cheese on top, and the broth was soooo good. Only thing that was difficult in the beef pieces were big and kind of hard to break up, but it all tasted great!
I'm a sucker for anything fried potatoes so I had to try the Parmesan truffles fries and 10/10 recommend. They were super crispy. Sundubu is delicious! It looks intimidating by the color that it's going to be super spicy but it's not. It has a subtle kick to it but very much tolerable. It comes out in a stone bowl which keeps it boiling hot so I would proceed to eat it with caution.
Sigh... I had such high hopes. A girlfriend told me about this spot so I dragged the hubby with me to this quaint/ cozy cafe that also serves up Korean cuisine. My first reaction? Expensive. I thought, this better sing. Then... my bi bim bap egg was dangerously undercooked (please refer to picture) and my drink didn't arrive until AFTER my meal. They did redo the egg (thanx) but overall it was just kinda a disappointment. I felt that the price ratio to food was off. I feel you get a much better value and authenticity from Seoul Market. If you are coming here to study and have a coffee and care about the ambience, come on over to Kaffeine, but if you want real Korean cooking at a no thrills establishment I'd say check out Seoul Market. It can't be beat imo.
Cool little spot for a fusion Korean-American lunch. Pretty chill vibe, good for coffee date/meeting or a solo study. Limited menu, friendly staff.
Oh my god I love it here I could cry I've been wanting to check out Kaffeine for literal years, it did NOT disappoint. The menu is so beautifully crafted and the spot is cozy and modern. I am still kind of speechless to give a perfect review. But please check this place out, you do not want to miss out on the feeling a meal from here will give you.
I have been wanting to try Kaffeine for a while now. I placed my take out order and it was prepared pretty quickly. And best of all, it was still hot when I got it home. I tried the spicy chicken bulgogi ramen and veggie rolls. I am a bit of a ramen snob and this ranks up in my top 5 for sure. It was packed with veggies and noodles. Honestly, there was not a ton of chicken in it. The broth was very good... slightly sweet but not overly sweet. Overall, it was a rich broth and very flavorful. The veggie rolls were good. Very crispy outside and tasty veggie center. I enjoyed my meal! I would love to try more of their dishes - especially the Korean food. Kaffeine really hit the spot for me since I was craving ramen.
I finally checked this place out and the Korean food did not disappoint! The limited hours made it harder for me to check out but they now have later hours! I looked at the online menu which was helpful because it's a little overwhelming when you're standing at the cafe to order because the menu signage is all over the place (think handwritten cafe signs with specials). Kimchi pancake - best we ever had! Lots of kimchi with a perfect char. Can't wait to order it again. Jjajangmyeon- black bean noodles were fantastic. There are very few places in GR to order this. Comes with the yellow pickled radishes. Totally took the leftovers home and when the noodles were gone, used the sauce to add chicken and rice for jjajangbap. Soondubu - Silken tofu stew. I loved being able to order it without any spice as my tastebuds have changed and I can't enjoy spice as much. It came BUBBLING in a stone bowl with an egg to poach. Love the mushrooms and how silky soft the tofu was. So comforting and delicious!
I've come here a couple of times and have really enjoyed it! I came here both times for dinner. Their menu is actually quite large, as they offer a variety of foods. The ambience is really cute; I've seen some people studying and working at the back of the place. They have high tables and low ones which I liked, because the high tables give off a more casual/cafe vibe, and the lower ones seemed more like for dinner. It is not a large place, but every time I have come here, there only have been one or two parties at another table. Really cute place to meet with a friend or date though! I got the sundubu jjigae with beef and it was really quite nice! It came out piping hot and bubbly - yum! I did wish they added a little bit more beef to it, but it was still good. I got mild spice, but I think next time, I would get a little spice to it - that is what makes the soup so good. The tofu was nice and soft! And the banchan was really good too. Worth the visit! There is a parking lot behind the building, or you can just do street parking right out on the street. The service was really quick!

Thanks to local guru Katy C., we stopped here while on the hunt for a tasty brunch spot that was unique and local to Grand Rapids. Insert Kaffeine. It's unlike any other place I've experienced - a Korean-American-infused brunch spot with freakin' amazing breakfast sandwiches, coffees/teas, and more. We ended up ordering two of the breakfast sandwiches: the veggie croissant sandwich and also a breakfast taco of some sort. It was recommended by the employee and was also on their specials menu. Hands down, some of the best sandwiches I've ever consumed. They were rich, full of flavor, yet also light and not overly filling. I will add that it took a solid 15 or so minutes to get our food, but it was worth every second. I would highly, highly recommend checking this place out. Can't stop thinking about this ramen. Hearty and spicy, with bountiful contents. I know I will be consuming it all fall and winter long and I think you should too. Kaffeine is a Grand Rapids gem and I am glad it's part of the city. A great coffee shop with truly unique Korean-fusion fare. read more
The korn dog was an absolute unit. The breading was crispy and savory with a nice sweet aftertaste from the sugar coating. The interior breading was sooo fluffy and delicious, excellent when paired with the meat portion. Definitely the best Korean korn dog I've tried to date. The Bingsoo was an interesting dish. The shaved ice was cold and refreshing with a good balance of sweetness and flavor. The little mochi bits were a great addition, I loved the chewy texture. The coffee was smooth and not the tiniest bit bitter. The lavender was subtle but sweet and I wish I had gotten a second one. The toast was messy but delicious! I'd never really tried soft cheese on bread before like this but I was not disappointed. The blueberries and honey complimented it beautifully. Inside seating is so cozy. It's very quiet too, great place to study or read a book at. Service can be a bit slow at times but the quality of the food and drinks makes up for it. read more

I've been wanting to check this place out for awhile and I'm glad I finally did! Its a cafe-type spot where you order at the front and then they bring it out to you, it's not full service which is nice because you can go there to read, study, work, etc. and not feel like you're in the way or taking up a servers table. There's a self serve station for water. The girl who took my order was very helpful. I asked for a recommendation on lattes and she said her favorite was the miel but she adds lavender - I'd typically never order lavender in my drink but I gave it a try and loved it! I also got the ramen with bulgogi beef extra spicy and it was awesome! I like spicy food but sometimes at Asian restaurants the extra spicy is crazy hot, this one wasn't. I would definitely recommend extra spicy if you're in between. The ramen was $13 +7 for beef so a little pricey but I also had a lot of leftovers. The aesthetic is clean and cute. Kaffeine is a coffee shop near Medical Mile. Despite being on the bottom level of a newer building, they do a good job of giving its own design charm. A bell rings when you open. Order a brown sugar latte from the barista and pick one of the many tables up front or in the back room. There's wifi and outlets everywhere making it a good place to work. My brown sugar latte was good, but it was small for the price tag of over $6. read more

Met a friend here for lunch ordered the bulgogi dumplings, bulgogi toast, and ramen w/chicken. The dumplings were scrumptious. Just a tad over friend but fresh and tasty: I enjoyed my bulgogi toast. It was full of flavor with a fried egg on top. Nice to have a a couple bites of salad to compliment the richness of the bulgogi. My friend enjoyed her huge bowl of ramen. They are short staffed like many businesses around town, but service was still great. Appreciate the self serve water station. I enjoyed a cappuccino afterward. Definitely a place I'll go back to if not just for some great coffee. read more

Kaffeine deserves five stars all around, year round! At first, I came here for an iced mocha with oat milk. That was delicious. Then again for another one and this time with the croissant sandwich and O.M.G. that was delicious too. Mind you it was to-go as well. THEN dining-in opened up in Michigan so I decided it'd be nice to come in and enjoy some of the food options while there. I'm still dreaming about the burrito and ramen! Everything was delicious! Having all the foods on actual dishes and drinks in a glass and mug (after having months of to-go containers from every where else) felt so nice! My toddler twins were with me and my husband, so it was a little challenging to enjoy everything but owner Sun Lee made everything so nice. She made a couple plates of fried rice with egg and gravy for our kids. I tasted it too and yummmmayyyy! This was not on the menu so we felt super special. You're just going to have to try your luck with your kids to get that dish :-P I can keep going on and on about my experiences here but that'd be wasting your time when you could've already tried them by now. This place does it right! I really like that they make everything to-order. If you are short on time, I'd recommend ordering ahead. I had the caramel apple latte to start and it was so delicious and frothy on top. I love me some good latte art! If I didn't order it, I probably wouldn't have picked up on caramel apple flavor, but I would be wondering why it tasted so dang good! For food, I ordered the potstickers, a chicken rice bowl (for my husband) and a Bulgogi burrito for me. The burrito was so good! I got it without cheese and so there was probably more rice than the "usual". The flavors were spicy but sweet from the yam yam sauce I got in it (you get to choose from about 4 sauce options). It was so big I could only put away half of it so I have leftovers today - woo hoo! The chicken rice bowl looked to have greens of some sort, noodles and rice in it as well as the chicken and a fried egg. There may have been some other things, but it wasn't what I ate so I couldn't say for sure. The atmosphere of the shop is nice, right along Michigan street and the windows go down the side of the building facing Michigan so it was awesome to have all the sun shining thru! Very friendly service of tasty, handmade sandwiches and personalized matcha. The above crafting took a little more time than I expected, but the atmosphere is engaging and gorgeous. With complimentary wifi and more than enough space to social distance, our original plan for a carry out transitioned to an in-house dining experience. The lone employee was friendly and apologetic with the amount of time it took to make everything, luckily our party of two were not in a rush and took the extra time to reflect in stride. Looking for a quick latte and meal? Probably not the place to visit. Wanting a non-chain coffee house experience that feels like a hug? Come visit! read more

I came here around 7pm and it was a pretty quiet night. I was helped by Katie who was knowledgeable about all the questions I had and recommended anything with Bulgogi, but I was pretty full already for the day and decided to go with their Mild Ramen with Tofu to combat the coldness. I also picked up a matcha iced latte with the order, which went really well with the spiciness of the ramen. The broth was done very well and extremely savory, with thick ramen noodles. The sides were very fresh and added a nice texture to the ramen. Right now Google is saying they don't have dine in, but when I went you were allowed to sit in and eat. They had a 20 people max occupancy though, so if that's your plan I'd give a call ahead to see if their is space especially during the afternoon or weekends. They kept everything sanitary, and package my ramen very well with nothing leaking once I got home! Katie was super friendly and gave me an accurate time of when my food would be ready. WOW. So happy I got to stop by Kaffeine today! Kaffeine is a Korean Fusion restaurant/cafe that offers a delicious menu and cozy interior. I got the Bulgogi Burrito - being Korean, I was a bit doubtful but the flavors worked well together and did not disappoint. The building is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside - past the kitchen there is a nook in the back with a seating area. I can definitely see myself there studying on a Saturday afternoon! For the seating by the front of the restaurant, a lot of sunlight comes in - great for pics! There is only street parking available. I got lucky with parking right in front of the building (can only fit about 4 cars), but there is street parking around the area if you don't mind crossing the street. I will definitely be back to try the other yummy dishes on the menu! read more

I absolutely love Kaffeine as a hidden gem of GR. While it's not open for dinner, it's a great lunch/brunch spot! We finally had the chance to go and try their K-Dog special and introduce it to my boyfriend. The K-Dog did not disappoint! It's a great size, very sweet (think donut outside with cheese and hot dog inside). The only downside to this is the cheese will always melt towards the top and not be with the hot dog (when you finally get to that spot). I would love for a place to actually cut and melt the cheese in a way that you can enjoy it throughout the whole K-dog, but either way, it was fantastic! The bulgogi burrito though was much better and I had food envy. It's a great spot, quiet, ample seating and easy parking in the back. I was a little disappointed that my Tumeric Ginger Chai Latte was just like drinking tumeric oat milk though, there was no other flavor that reminded me of a unique chai. However, overall, still a great experience and I plan to come back! read more

K A F F E I N E The new kid on the block is giving us all the happy Monday morning feels. Kaffeine had a soft opening 2 weeks ago, and we wanted to visit them ourselves before we shared the news with you! Located right on Michigan Street NE, we are so impressed with this new modern space. There is a ton of natural light (which we love - especially going into these colder months) and plenty of different seating & standing areas for everyone's type. Menu item to try: The Caramel Apple Latté. This latte has so many flavors, and the friendly barista's told us that they worked hard to perfect it. And it was amazing! Kaffeine has a food menu they are continuing to add to, and also carry pastries from Field and Fire. Parking is available in the front, and also in the back! Woohoo! read more

There are whole restaurants dedicated to ramen that don't hold a candle to this one. Definitely the best ramen in town-- maybe the best vegetarian ramen ever. The tofu is dank. I take one star off this spot only because they are called kaffeine and there brewed coffee is terrible. If you're looking for good food this is the spot, if you're looking for good coffee almost any other coffee place in GR will have a better brew. read more

We catered 3 trays of japchae: bulgolgi, vegetable and tofu as well as 1 tray of house salad for our daughter's baptism party. Sun Lee delivered it to our event venue for a fee and set it up in our tray warmers as well. All our guests loved the noodles and the salad dressing - it was a creamy, sweet sauce. Updating my review: just tried the sundubu jjigae, and it was amazing. Kaffeine has grown so much since Sun brought it to Grand Rapids, I'm so excited to try the other new menu items she added recently. The chicken sandwich is next on my list! This remains my favorite restaurant/coffee shop in town, and if you haven't swung by yet it should be your next stop. read more

Kaffeine will have to be on our list of stops now whenever we come to Grand Rapids. All the staff were friendly, professional, and very quick. You wouldn't know they were understaffed if they took down the sign on the door that said so. We had 3 different drinks, all of which were delicious. We ordered more than enough food and gladly took home leftovers. The little salad on the side of each meal also was a wonderful little touch. I wish we lived in the area because I would come here every single day. read more

I had kaffeine's bulgogi rice bowl for lunch. Even as take out it was very fresh and tasty! It comes you choice of protein, some japchae noodles and some lettuce and tomatoes, all topped with a fried egg. The bulgogi was so tasty! And I loved the japchae in the bowl. I wish I could get a whole bowl of the noodles, even though the rice was cooked perfectly. I can't wait to go back! The staff was so helpful and the place itself seems great for a coffee meet-up or some quiet studying. read more

I'd never heard my fiancé use the word, 'splendid' until he described his bulgogi burrito from Kaffeine. He said it had a great combination of flavors and was incredibly filling for the price. I enjoyed the bulgogi bowl (with all three sauces on the side) for a flavorful but less heavy and easier leftover dish. Well I have no leftovers. And honestly the sauce on the meat was so delicious and prevalent that I didn't need a lot of sauce, although they were still fun to try! We also had an order of dumplings. I typically like steamed dumplings but I took the employee's suggestion for pan fried and I'm glad we did. Usually pan fried dumplings get gummy or too hard to chew IMO, but these were amazing. The dipping sauce was a bit more vinegar-y than I anticipated. I welcomed the change in pace but I can see how it might be too strong for the masses. My only regret is that we got dinner so I couldn't try their coffee or matcha. But the good news is that I'll be back! Soon! Do note that street parking is the easiest. There didn't seem to be a lot in the back. The interior is spotless and very cute. Service was unmatched when it came to suggestions over the phone, prompt pickup, easy payment experience, and friendliness. read more
