Shoutout to Folsom, CA. Kabayan! This is a super worthy shout out. Kabayan is Filipino casual counter service eatery serving up some darn tasty food. I'm not well versed in Filipino cuisine, but I got working tastebuds and I like what I like. I meandered into the eatery on a recent weekend mid-afternoon. The tables were filled with happy folks enjoying their meals with a line of folks waiting for an open table; that's always a good indicator. I decided to order to go. The owner was cashiering. She was super helpful and engaging. Big smile. I ordered the two item combo $13.99 that comes with rice and pancit. The pancit was classic with all the familiar flavors. Ginisang Pusit. Squid. Soooo good! I never had this dish before. The squid was super tender, not mushy nor rubbery. Perfect tenderness... how did they do that?!? It had a sweetness and slight spiciness. Spiciness without the heat, but packing a bunch of flavor. I'm still thinking about that dish. Pork Kare Kare. It was served with a side of fermented shrimp paste. Not a lot of restaurants provide that shrimp paste, so I was stoked even if it was a smallish portion. The paste was a perfect compliment of saltiness to the creamy peanut butter sauce. Yup, PB gravy sauce. They also sell imported Filipino packaged snacks and pantry items. Plus they sell halo halo. I saw folks with gorgeously delicious looking halo halo. Colorful layers of shaved ice, ice cream, and toppings. The eatery is not particular large, so when it's a full house, it gets crowded cozy. read more

This place has been open about a year now and while I go to the Vietnamese restaurant in the same plaza often, this was my first visit. There's plenty of parking spots as it's in the same plaza as Raleys. It's a smaller shop that poses as a restaurant on one side and a small market filled with Filipino snacks on the other. There's not much for ambience, but it's clean and cozy. The owner served me, and she was super warm and friendly and very welcoming. I had questions about the food and their menu and she was very patient going through all of them. She introduced me to pitchi pitchi which is a sweet and salty cassava dessert that reminds me of mochi. The cheese threw me off a little, but I read that sometimes it's served with coconut flakes. I ordered two halo halo desserts, two combos, the cassava dessert, upgraded the rice to garlic rice, two orders of lumpia, and picked up a couple of calamansi drinks and garlic peanuts as a snick snack. Total bill plus tip was over $100. The menu changes every day, which I think is interesting. And every Sunday they serve lechon for $18 a pound. Check out their Facebook page for updates in case I got this information wrong. For the food, I had half pancit and half rice. I had adobo chicken, butter chicken, and two pork dishes that I don't remember the name. I like that the pork had a good combo of fat and lean meats. I wish I could've eaten it there but we had lunch and then decided to stop here. I felt like the food being warmed up after sitting in the fridge for a bit, It kind of made all of the entrées taste similar to each other. Next time I will vary my order, like I'll get a saucey dish, a sour soup, and a bbq skewer. All in all the food tasted very homey and delicious. It's heavily seasoned. Great to have a Filipino food place in Folsom! There was plenty of parking available and reasonable wait for a Sunday lunch time. I went for the three item combo plate with half bihon and half rice from the hot foods display. The three items I chose were the barbecue chicken skewer, barbecue pork skewer, and sisig. The sisig had more of a stew texture that most sisigs I have tried, but was still tasty. It was not spicy though which was a bit disappointing for me. The barbecue skewers were solid. The bihon was average but I would choose it as part of a combo again. The staff were very friendly. The restaurant is on the small side but there are some table and chairs available. We ate lunch here today and it's Philippine Independence Day. They have rotating menus daily. We had the pork dinuguan, beef mechado, pork sisig, lumpia and of course, rice and pansit bihon. We also had sago/gulaman drinks. The servers were really nice. They told us to eat first before paying. If you need a few things in your pantry, they might have it in their mini-store as well. I came here for lunch and had a very delicious meal. I got a two item plate with bbq pork and sinigang. For your base, you can get rice, pancit, or both. Auntie packed my plate with pancit and I can get full from just that. The pork skewers are sweet and salty, and the sinigang was sour and fresh. Both dishes were very good, I'm excited to go back and try their other dishes. You can also sample the dishes too. I finished my meal with a halo halo which was $10. OMGeee! Not only does this place serve food, it's like a mini market. I haven't had some of these snacks in forever. There's nothing out here that I know of except one other Filipino restaurant. But to get groceries... that's another story. Seeing this brought so much joy. They also have sweet treats made like bika, puto, etc. Food: Okay, so I read the bad review and I don't know what they're talking about. The food was good! I had the dinuguan and bbq skewer with rice. So yummy and the portions were good too. I also tried their sago (think Filipino boba) and I can't believe I've never had this before, so good! Service: It was a little busy, there were 3 people ahead of me. I was greeted though. Even with being busy, they were nice. I even got the suggestion about trying the sago because I asked what that was from another customer. Ambiance: So here's where I think people will disagree with me. With Folsom being Folsom, it's basic. But here's the thing, if you're Filipino it feels a bit like home. You may go in there thinking it looks like a cafeteria. It was cooked perfectly and still had firmness - Adobong pusit (Squid): my favorite Filipino dish and it was tasty. The squid was tender and each piece was big. This place is delicious. It's homestyle Filipino food. I especially like the fresh Barbeque sticks and the kaldereta. Sometimes they have super delicious fried chicken in the style of Max's from the Philippines. Like that the fried chicken is not breaded; just pure fried chicken. Yum! I ordered these trays from their catering menu. The lumpias were perfectly fried with a hint of sweetness to the meat filling. The pork sisig was seasoned nicely as well. Serving Authentic Filipino Dishes [Folsom CA] While in the Folsom area I happened to notice this Filipino restaurant with its name in bright red bold letters. Inside is a modest space they designated for customer table seating. On the other side of the wall are shelves they used for merchandise, selling some grocery items. It looked like a new business and it was busy inside, a little chaotic. I popped in and inquired if they had Halo-halo, a popular Filipino dessert. They didn't have it available. I left but I returned the next day. The Next Day: I returned today and decided to try their food. The combo meals had 6 dishes to choose from. This menu rotates daily. My Combo #1 comes with choice of 2 scoops of rice or pancit bihon or half and half. I chose half rice, half pancit and the bistek for my dish. The food was authentic Filipino cuisine. The beef steak ("bistek") was flavorful and the meat was tender. The portion seemed small, though, but I guess that's what you get for $10. For an add'l $2 you can also make your meal to include a drink. This restaurant has only been in operation for less than a month, opened 12/17/24. Looks like they're off to a great start and I hope it remains that way. I was told that one can check their daily menu on their Facebook page. They are closed on Mondays. Awesome Filipino spot. Reminds me of when I grew up in the Bay Area. Got the 3 entree and 50/50 pancit/rice. Rotating menu according to the boss lady working. Chicken adobo, beef skewers, and the pork and beef dish I got(can't remember the name) were all excellent and had some left overs for dinner. Also got 2 orders of the lumpia. The edges were a little over cooked and had to cut off the ends but luckily everything else was fine. Also took home son of the young coconut ice cream tub to go and that's absolutely mouth watering. I came in here around 11:30 on a Thursday, and I was the only customer, and the food looked fresh and delicious. The guy working there gave me a breakdown of each dish. I had the Beef Kaldereta and some sort of slightly spicy pork dish along with a scoop of rice, and a scoop of pancit. The Beef Kaldereta was in a tomato sauce, it was mild, it tasted good, but it was basically Filipino goulash or Swiss steak. The pork dish was delicious, and I would order it again. What a hidden gem. Located off Bidwell (but closer to the side street) in the Raley's shopping center. Hubby and I went by this weekend for a dinner that was not your typical chain type of food. Great family owned restaurant. We had the Belly Lechon (it was so yummy - unfortunately fattening, but we don't eat this every day) and had the 1 dish combo with a chicken with coconut milk (can't remember the name) and pancit. The chicken was a little spicy for my taste (I'm a wimp) but hubby liked it. Chatted with Ms. Abbie who was manning the front. We tried some samples of the Pork Sinigang (this is what I'm going to get next time) and a couple of their other offerings. As we were eating, we wanted to add something to our pancit, and Ms. Abbie suggested these Filipino lemons (small green ones) that added a nice twist to the pancit. Service was very friendly, ambiance of the restaurant was pretty plain, but clean. Their food offerings change daily so you need to check their facebook page for their daily offering. So glad a fast food Filipino restaurant opened up in Folsom that serves authentic Filipino food. This was my third visit. The first time I tried going at dinner time and they were pretty much sold out. I came back for lunch a few days later and was able to give it another try. It was delicious!! They have a different menu everyday. Price was decent for this Folsom, I got the 3 item combo and it comes others rice and/or pancit. I got a fountain drink too and it came out to $22.
