A true bang-for-your-buck kind of spot. I kept seeing people walk out with tray orders for takeout, and now I know why. They've got both quality and quantity. The pancit was a hitter, especially with the pork skewers and lechón. For around $30, you can get a tray that easily feeds 3-4 people. That's hard to beat. This is more of a wish than a complaint: if they ever did longaniza with garlic rice, or tocino as a breakfast option one day a week, I'd be first in line. There just aren't enough Filipino food spots around here. If you've never had Filipino food before, let me make it easy: First order: BBQ meat with rice and lumpia. If you're looking for Filipino soul food, Kabayan isn't too bad. Their menu changes daily, so there won't always be the same thing. I got the half and half combo with the pork adobo and one other rib entree. The vinegar on the adobo was too strong for me. The other rib entree was fine. It was tender and the meat fell off the bone. I tried one of their ube buns, and yum, delicious. Should I come back, I want to try the halo halo. Service was good. The staff were very sweet. En route to South Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area, Kabayan in Folsom had some great reviews for their Filipino food. Because I wasn't that hungry, I asked if I could just order lechon (pork belly) by itself, but you have to order the Lechon Kawali Barkada platter for $30 so that's what I did. After a 15 minute wait, a half tray of pancit, lechon, chicken skewers, and lumpia rolls with sauces was set before me. While the menu says the platter serves 2-3 people, it's more like 4. Because the lechon and lumpia are served on top of the pancit, both were not as crispy as I would have liked, but everything tasted good. I had to stop by and try it. I got their two combo plate and a side order of their lumpia. My combo I ordered pancit only (you can do half/half steamed rice if you like), Guisantes and Pork Sinigang soup. Oh man I miss it so much! It was last minute add on with the lumpia. I was too full so I had to take my lumpia to go. What a pleasant experience. The pancit is so good. It was a mix of bihon noodles and bits of canton noodles. Guisantes so yummy. I'm not well versed in Filipino cuisine, but I got working tastebuds and I like what I like. I meandered into the eatery on a recent weekend mid-afternoon. The tables were filled with happy folks enjoying their meals with a line of folks waiting for an open table; that's always a good indicator. I decided to order to go. The owner was cashiering. She was super helpful and engaging. Big smile. I ordered the two item combo $13.99 that comes with rice and pancit. The pancit was classic with all the familiar flavors. Ginisang Pusit. Squid. Soooo good! I never had this dish before. The squid was super tender, not mushy nor rubbery. Perfect tenderness... how did they do that?!? It had a sweetness and slight spiciness. Spiciness without the heat, but packing a bunch of flavor. I'm still thinking about that dish. Pork Kare Kare. It was served with a side of fermented shrimp paste. Not a lot of restaurants provide that shrimp paste, so I was stoked even if it was a smallish portion. The paste was a perfect compliment of saltiness to the creamy peanut butter sauce. Yup, PB gravy sauce. They also sell imported Filipino packaged snacks and pantry items. Plus they sell halo halo. I saw folks with gorgeously delicious looking halo halo. Great to have a Filipino food place in Folsom! There was plenty of parking available and reasonable wait for a Sunday lunch time. I went for the three item combo plate with half bihon and half rice from the hot foods display. The three items I chose were the barbecue chicken skewer, barbecue pork skewer, and sisig. The sisig had more of a stew texture that most sisigs I have tried, but was still tasty. It was not spicy though which was a bit disappointing for me. The barbecue skewers were solid. The bihon was average but I would choose it as part of a combo again. The staff were very friendly. The restaurant is on the small side but there are some table and chairs available. This place has been open about a year now and while I go to the Vietnamese restaurant in the same plaza often, this was my first visit. There's plenty of parking spots as it's in the same plaza as Raleys. It's a smaller shop that poses as a restaurant on one side and a small market filled with Filipino snacks on the other. There's not much for ambience, but it's clean and cozy. The owner served me, and she was super warm and friendly and very welcoming. I had questions about the food and their menu and she was very patient going through all of them. She introduced me to pitchi pitchi which is a sweet and salty cassava dessert that reminds me of mochi. The cheese threw me off a little, but I read that sometimes it's served with coconut flakes. I ordered two halo halo desserts, two combos, the cassava dessert, upgraded the rice to garlic rice, two orders of lumpia, and picked up a couple of calamansi drinks and garlic peanuts as a snick snack. Total bill plus tip was over $100. The menu changes every day, which I think is interesting. And every Sunday they serve lechon for $18 a pound. I had adobo chicken, butter chicken, and two pork dishes that I don't remember the name. I like that the pork had a good combo of fat and lean meats. I wish I could've eaten it there but we had lunch and then decided to stop here. I felt like the food being warmed up after sitting in the fridge for a bit, It kind of made all of the entrées taste similar to each other. Next time I will vary my order, like I'll get a saucey dish, a sour soup, and a bbq skewer. All in all the food tasted very homey and delicious. It's heavily seasoned. Serving Authentic Filipino Dishes [Folsom CA] While in the Folsom area I happened to notice this Filipino restaurant with its name in bright red bold letters. Inside is a modest space they designated for customer table seating. On the other side of the wall are shelves they used for merchandise, selling some grocery items. It looked like a new business and it was busy inside, a little chaotic. I popped in and inquired if they had Halo-halo, a popular Filipino dessert. They didn't have it available. I left but I returned the next day. The Next Day: I returned today and decided to try their food. The combo meals had 6 dishes to choose from. This menu rotates daily. My Combo #1 comes with choice of 2 scoops of rice or pancit bihon or half and half. I chose half rice, half pancit and the bistek for my dish. The food was authentic Filipino cuisine. The beef steak ("bistek") was flavorful and the meat was tender. The portion seemed small, though, but I guess that's what you get for $10. For an add'l $2 you can also make your meal to include a drink. This restaurant has only been in operation for less than a month, opened 12/17/24. We ate lunch here today and it's Philippine Independence Day. They have rotating menus daily. We had the pork dinuguan, beef mechado, pork sisig, lumpia and of course, rice and pansit bihon. We also had sago/gulaman drinks. The servers were really nice. They told us to eat first before paying. If you need a few things in your pantry, they might have it in their mini-store as well. This place is delicious. It's homestyle Filipino food. I especially like the fresh Barbeque sticks and the kaldereta. Sometimes they have super delicious fried chicken in the style of Max's from the Philippines. Like that the fried chicken is not breaded; just pure fried chicken. Yum! I had the Beef Kaldereta and some sort of slightly spicy pork dish along with a scoop of rice, and a scoop of pancit. Chicken adobo, beef skewers, and the pork and beef dish I got(can't remember the name) were all excellent and had some left overs for dinner. Also got 2 orders of the lumpia. The edges were a little over cooked and had to cut off the ends but luckily everything else was fine. Also took home son of the young coconut ice cream tub to go and that's absolutely mouth watering.
