We stumbled on this place after the restaurant where we planned on eating was closed. Delicious food. Someone from the kitchen brought us samples of her lamb stew. So delicious. My husband and I split a kebab platter and substituted the rice for salad. There was some incredible dressing on the salad. Get the side dish of baba ganush. I love Middle Eastern food. I've been by Kabab Cafe many times but never ventured in. Typically I get my Middle Eastern fix at Aladdin in West Reading. Being ignorant, I made the mistake of not realizing Kabab Cafe was Persian. I saw hummus and was looking for some of my other favorites - fattoush, tabouleh - and asked the young lady behind the counter. She looked up from texting and informed me - with much disdain - "that's Arab, this is Persian." I wound up getting a lamb kabab sandwich and shirazi salad. Both were tasty. Lamb a bit chewy. Overall, I'd give it a 2.5/5. I doubt I'll be back. I'll stick to the Lebanese varieties in West Reading. read more

We went to the Kabob Cafe tonight for the first time. We all got the kabob soltani joojeh. Basically pretty tasteless, especially as compared to the Persian Grille on Germantown Pike or the Sansom Kabob House in Philly. Both have way more taste/flavor in their dishes for about the same price. And both have home-made doogh, which the Kabab Cafe sells but it's in a soda bottle from Canada. Not sure why the dishes were lacking in taste/flavor... Maybe they don't add the typical Persian spices for Americans... read more

I really love this place for lunch. The staff are friendly and are happy to answer questions. The first time I tried this restaurant I was a little intimidated by the menu and my lack of experience with Persian food, but the lady taking my order was very helpful. I love the falafel platter and always take home enough for lunch the next day because the portions are so generous. A great family run Persian restaurant. Very nice and casual for lunch and dinner. The food is amazing, and made with love and care. They use really high quality ingredients and it tastes amazing. I highly recommend the Kabob Barg, which is churrasco cut steak, grilled, and served with saffron rice. You also have to try the Korshe Goosht, which is like a hearty beef stew served over rice. BEWARE - The motivation behind my first yelp review is to warn people of this place which got 3 out of the 4 of us eating there a few nights back really sick. Three of us who had a lamb or chicken dish got FOOD POISONING. This was the only common place where we had shared a meal so we are 100 percent sure Kabab CAfe was the culprit. The only one out of the 4 who didn't get sick had the falafel vegetarian dish. The food didn't taste bad and the meat was heavily marinated so no one at the time could tell whether what they were eating was bad meat or not. All four of us therefore feel strongly about warning future or current customers of this place. If you don't want to spend 2 days hurling or stuck on the toilet then don't go. First of all, the staff is very personable and friendly! The platters with the Goosht meat sauce are amazing! My wife and I always order a few pieces of the Lavash (Naan) bread I like the yogurt and cucumber side but not brave enough to try the yogurt soda. Kabab Cafe is the real deal. This is a family owned and operated business and the taste of the food reflects the caring nature of the production. We often get the family meal which includes very generous portions of basmati rice and my favorite, the cauliflower with dressing. I chanced on this place, and loved it from the first bite. Straight-over-the-plate Persian food. Not fancy, just delicious grilled meat. I've been a regular at this outstanding restaurant for several months now and I can honestly say Kabab Cafe is my favorite place to eat. The food is always great, lunch or dinner. The portions are generous and the prices reasonable. The family (Kabab Cafe is family-owned and operated) is just wonderful - and they will happily answer your questions if you are new to Persian cuisine. If I had to recommend a platter I would probably say try the Koobideh (ground beef), Doner (gyro - lamb and beef), or Barg (steak.. it's delicious). But it's hard to choose because there are so many great options. I could eat 5 meals a week here and not get bored. I think this place is the best-kept dining secret in the area. My mom and I stopped in for dinner on a Friday night. We were greeted instantly. One of the men working asked if it was our first time, and brought out a sample for us, which was fanastic. Then, the woman behind the counter gave us a run down of the menu and suggested we get the Barg and Joojeh to split between the two of us. The food was brought out quickly, and it was so good. I was pretty hungry and stopped here for some takeout, and I went away very impressed. A man who I assume is the owner was extremely helpful to me when ordering, and gave me several samples so I could choose what I would like. He also threw in some extra side salads since I was a newbie to his restaurant. The entree (a chicken stew with rice) and the salads were plentiful and delicious, and the staff could not have been nicer. It was also very reasonable for the amount of food I took home. I came here the other day with my sister. I ordered the Kabab Soltani Joojeh (chicken and beef combo) and my sister got the Kabab Soltani Barg (beef kabob and beef strips). The chicken and beef kabobs were cooked well. The beef kabob was really tender and somewhat tasty. We got the cucumber yogurt sauce as a side and it was pretty decent. However, the chicken kabobs really lacked flavor and the beef strips were chewy and not cooked well at all. There was nothing special about the rice either, just plain white rice colored yellow. Overall, I found that the platters were way overpriced, esp. for how bland the food was. Being South Asian, I have had my fair share of kabobs and these were simply subpar. We were very disappointed especially after having read all the positive reviews. read more

this is a really nice place. i wish i lived closer so i could go more often. they serve standard persian food. chicken and beef kebabs with yellow/white rice. it tastes really good. you get some sides as well and some crispy/crunchy bread with butter that tastes absolutely great. if you live close to here then lucky you read more

Food was mediocre, not terrible, but I've had much better for less money. The issue with the place is the owner and staff are unreasonably rude. After placing our orders and my family took seats at a table in the corner by the wall, I was completing my payment and a large party of 8 people came in the door. Granted the place is not large, but rather than accommodate his 4 paying customers who were already seated, he forcibly said that we had to move to a different table so he could push the tables together to cater to his customers who haven't even ordered yet. My wife and children did not want to move and he started moving the tables despite saying we did not want to move. Note that there was enough seating for everyone, but rather than split a large party into two tables, he was ordering us to move. Not even asking us politely. It's not like this little cafe is fine dining where you go for service and ambiance. We just wanted to eat and go. Since it was apparent that we were being treated without respect, we asked for a refund as we had not yet been served. The owner was reluctant to do so but a different group of customers had just finished their meal so we were "permitted" to stay in our chosen seats since the large party could push some other little tables 18" closer together. read more

Tried Kabab Cafe for the first time, based on other Yelp reviews. This is definitely authentic Persian cuisine. The restaurant is not fancy, but the staff is very friendly. They restaurant was full when we arrived, but we were able to order immediately and the freshly baked bread arrived soon after. We ordered the Koobideh, Barg and Joojeh, everything was delicious! So disappointed after reading such great reviews. Had lunch there today. I had the doner sandwich, my husband had the ground beef log sandwich. My gyro meat was undercooked and too thick with oddly a pickle in the middle of my pita sandwich! Husband described his meet as a really burnt meatball. We will NEVER be back. read more

I went here today for lunch and it was so incredibly good. I'm going to be thinking about my sandwich with perfectly cooked ground beef, juicy grilled tomatoes and their house dressing for the rest of the week. The bread was so soft, yet firm enough to hold everything together. This food was cooked with love... a rarity these days. The lunch specials are great deals and I honestly think I could eat everything on their menu. I'm glad I don't have to travel far for good Persian cuisine. Dining room is informal but clean and nice.
