My order traveled 40 minutes before I was able to dig in, but even so, it remained solid. Ordering sushi in the suburbs I missed my Madai! I missed delicious otoro, and I missed a few nuances of good sushi, like proper slicing, great temperature control and the key that separates good from great nigiri, good rice. As far as the food: Madai- chewier than expected but may be because I ordered at the end of the night or caught them on an off day. Kin Madai-solid :) Otoro- melt in your mouth, fatty, buttery, and decadent as it should be! We come here about 3-4 times a month, so it's safe to say this spot is one of our go-tos. We can usually get a table without a long wait, the staff is always friendly, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the sushi is consistently fresh. Our usual lineup includes raw oysters, bone marrow, edamame, a variety of sashimis, and the hot rock short rib--and every single dish is reliably delicious each visit. The only real downsides are the timing of the dishes and the wine selection. The pacing can be pretty uneven; one person may finish their plate several minutes before another's food even arrives. If you're ordering multiple dishes, it helps to put in the longest-prep items first, then order the quicker ones 5-10 minutes later. The wine menu also feels limited and could use an upgrade. Our waiter was pretty good, and the bartender was really nice. The sushi was good, and the chicken karage was ok. The most well received were the grilled beef tongue and grilled squid but others complained about how chewy they were. Chicken skewers were no bueno for me; seasoning was off and the outside of the meat was burnt black in some parts. Rolls: 1/5 Sashimi: 3/5 Apps: 2/5 With so many decent (although overpriced) options in the loop, you really can't get away with subpar and lazy sushi. Skewers and Squid were overcooked too. I think the main thing here is that there isn't much pride or knowledge even in how to make a product that's worth coming back for. Any neighborhood strip center sushi joint could be here and you wouldn't know the difference. Out of everything we had, i liked the baisil tuna roll, the salmon tiradito, and the miso eggplant. Everything else was a bust, IMO. You might think you can't go wrong with Hamachi chili, since it's just yellow tail w/ ponzu and a slice of jalapeño, but it was sliced too thick, also, I wouldn't suggest the oysters, or if you do, ask if they have horse radish and cocktail sauce because that green sauce didn't go well with it.
