Scallop Butter
Victoria N.

Finally got to try this restaurant last night with my friend and had a great experience. We came on a Saturday evening and were seated right away. It's located in a plaza so there is plenty of parking. Service was quick, attentive & great. The ambiance of the restaurant was good, it was modern but traditional at the same time. There's tables, bar seating and two private rooms with traditional floor seating. The bathrooms also had bidets and the whole restaurant was overall very clean. We ordered the Agedashi tofu, Scallop butter, Gindara, Beef udon, Spicy tuna roll, Spicy salmon roll, Tuna hand roll and Salmon hand roll. The only things I didn't care too much about were the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls. The fish tasted good, but it wasn't a standout. Absolutely loved the scallop butter, beef udon, gindara and the salmon hand roll. The seasonings and flavors for appetizers and udon were perfect and the hand roll was filling, fresh and satisfying. Overall loved the ambiance, service and food and will definitely come back.

Came here without a reservation on a Saturday night and were seated at the counter. The exterior and interior of the restaurant were super cute and extremely clean, it felt like we were in Japan. The staff here were all super friendly including the chefs. Service was quick. We loved being seated where we could see the sushi being made. Food overall was amazing! You can see and taste how fresh the fish was which I really appreciated, and the portion sizes were great--not too much rice in the sushi!

Very polite staff. The sushi rolls were delicious. My favorite was the dragon roll. The Japanese design was cool.

Agedashi Tofu

Very beautiful restaurant, I felt like I was back in Japan again. I have to point out how nice the bathrooms were... they had a bidet! Anyways, the food here was delicious. All raw fish options tasted fresh. The agedashi tofu was crispy, and its broth was nice and savory. The beef udon had nice thick noodles with tender meat. The scallop looked a bit underwhelming but the flavors were all there! As for the gindara, it had a nice char on the edges and the miso flavor was great! This place would be a great date night spot for sure!

Ten-Zarusoba

I ordered the ten Zarusoba which are called dipping noodles that come with a side of tempura. Portion was not huge, but not small either. My table also ordered the calamari karaage as an appetizer, but note that it came with only three pieces. Would recommend just ordering noodles or sushi if you are here. The fish is quite fresh. The restaurant had bar and table seating options.

Use to be a lot better. Not sure what happened to the food but it doesn't seem like it's authentic Japanese ramen any more. The whole color and taste tastes completely different than it used to be. Tastes like Chinese restaurant's ramen now.

Lychee Martini

A solid spot for Japanese food! My boyfriend and I had a reservation on a Friday night at 7 pm so we were seated right away when we arrived. For drinks I ordered the lychee martini and this is a must get. I personally prefer cocktails that taste like juice and this hit the spot. I not only loved how there was a citrusy/sweet sugar coating on the rim but the cocktail was also really boozy! Definitely dangerous but I enjoyed every sip haha. For appetizer we ordered the Ika Sugatayaki and the Hamachi Kama. I appreciated how the squid was cooked just right so it was soft and the soy sauce glaze on top was perfect. As for the Hamachi Kama, this is a must get! The fish was very light, moist, and tender and when you squeeze lemon juice on top and pair it with the daikon oroshi, it's fantastic. As for the main course, I had the Tempura and my boyfriend had the Tonkatsu. I loved how Teppay did the tempura batter right. Many places have a super thick/dense coating but Teppay does it very light which gave the tempura that airy crisp texture when you bite into it. I also loved how they put daikon oroshi in the dipping sauce! The portion is pretty big so I ended up taking some home- popped it in the air fryer the next day and it tasted just like when it was freshly served. As for my boyfriend's tonkatsu, he said it was just okay. If I recall correctly, I believe he said something along the lines of how the meat was a little too dry. But he really enjoyed the potato salad that came on the side. Aside from the hot dishes, we also got nigiri's. The star of the show was the ama ebi (sweet shrimp). Although it costs a little extra, it also comes with the shrimp's fried head so it's worth it! We weren't able to explore the interior since we were seated right near the door but from the pictures I saw online, there should be a traditional seating style in the back with the tatamis. As for our server, she was sweet but also a little all over the place. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here and will be coming back!

Tried out this unassuming izakaya after seeing it on social media, we really liked it! We came on a Friday night and while we did make a reservation, the place wasn't that packed and we were seated right away. Service: 4/5 it did take a while for us to get utensils, and our water didn't come until after our food came, but otherwise they were friendly. Food: 5/5 everything was delicious! Some of the specials were a bit pricey but I thought it was worth it. They apparently have a secret menu that's in Japanese, if you're adventurous you can give it a try. Ambiance: 5/5 the restaurant reminded us of izakayas in Japan, they even have a tatami mat room that you can reserve for larger parties. Overall was a good experience, we'll definitely be back!

The old Teppay has gone, and in comes a new management, new chefs, new menu, and new ambiance. The menu has almost doubled in price, and the sashimi slices have gotten smaller, but the taste remains excellent. There were some new menu items: lobster sashimi with miso soup, and basque cheesecake, both of which I thought were excellent and well-worth the price (miso soup can use a bit less MSG though). The main sushi chef who prepared all of our food this evening, Yuta, mentioned that he has only been here for a few weeks, so I believed that the negative reviews must have been before his arrival, because our food looked and tasted solid. However, I think the new management should learn how to take constructive criticism considering all the responses to recent reviews have been rather rude and dismissive. Teppay was a hidden treasure for many of us for many years, filled with friendly staff and delicious memories. If you're going to carry the torch, don't tarnish the name.

I think im adding this restaurant to my rotation, i really like everything about the place is small but cozy and peaceful. All the food was great, my only wish it that they had more drinks available, they have a big alcohol menu but for non acoholic beverages nothing stands out as special

Kaarage
Samantha J.

If I could, I would rate this place a 3.5. I was excited to try Teppay after seeing it on social media as I love Japanese food. We came on a weekday and did not have to wait. It was very cute and cozy, I'd consider making a reservation if you're planning to go during the weekend. I saw they also have a private room for larger parties. From the kitchen we ordered chicken karaage, beef tataki, chicken yakitori and beef udon. The chicken karaage portion was smaller than I expected and a little dry. The beef tataki was tough and needed more flavor. The chicken yakitori did not have the authentic charred flavor I look for when I eat Japanese skewers. Beef udon was decent but not my favorite in Houston. For nigiri we got an assortment of eel, seared salmon, madai, chutoro and a few others. They were decently priced and pretty tasty. We ended the meal with their cheesecake, which was definitely my favorite dish of the night. It's one of the best I've had in town. Overall, the meal was decent and I saw a lot of unique items that I wanted to try. However, I was left mostly unimpressed by their cooked food especially for the price we paid. When craving Japanese food I'd probably stick to my usual favorite spot vs this one. However, if one of my friends wanted to come here I wouldn't be opposed. Especially, just so I can eat their amazing cheesecake again.

Great sushi - Uni is amazing and I enjoyed the agedashi tofu. Service sucks - waitresses and confused and half don't speak English. They often get the order wrong and can't explain the specials. I'll be back because the sushi is great and they offer an omakase. Also no one comes here so you'll always get a spot :)

Flying V Harvest was fantastic. I drank that broth like I just came out of the Sahara. So good. The Impossible meat fusion is a funny add but a good protein bump. It was a few days ago but I think I'm still full from that ramen bowl. The vibe is modern high ceiling bumping music; my in-laws found it to be too loud. I think they are giving you an excuse to lean in and get a little closer to your companion. The vibe is chic yet also casual so bring whoever you want but this would work for date night. The font on the menus is squint inducing so do your research ahead of time or prepare to spend more time perusing the menu than usual, especially with the dim lighting. They offer thin or thick noodles and can mix some broth options to adjust spice level. Drinks- the smoked in front of your face whiskey is a treat and a show. Solid spot. No regrets. Salivating at the thought of the next visit.

Their ramen is flavorful and solid and their service is consistent. Parking: parking is free in the garage around the corner from JINYA. We went during the week and the garage was not packed. There's also paid street parking around the restaurant that you can find but look for signs to know when you have to pay and when you don't. Service: service here is very good. They have an army of waitresses and waiters who check on tables and we never had to ask for refills or never had to flag down someone. Our food came out in a timely manner. The one thing I will say about service is the appetizers we ordered came out right before our ramen so we had all of our food at one time which was a lot. I wish they would've spaced out the food timing a little more. Ambiance: JINYA has a modern interior and open concept. They have tables, booths, and 2 big community tables in the center of the restaurant. The restaurant playlist is hip and modern. The inside of the restaurant is dimly lit so if you have bad eyesight, get ready to use your flashlight to read the menu. Food: we ordered two ramens and the gyoza and edamame. Gyoza: these were fried well and had a gyoza sauce that came on the table. The wrapper was thin and they were not too oily. We would order this again. Edamame: this was typical edamame. Nothing too special. Would not get this again when we come back. Creamy Classic Tori-Paitian: this is a chicken ramen with wavy noodles that came with fried enoki mushrooms, chicken chasu, butter, spinach and a corn rib. This ramen was rich in flavor and had so many fun, delicious toppings. The corn run was grilled nicely and I wish I had more of them in my bowl. I'm a sucker for enoki mushrooms and this did not disappoint. I took the enoki mushrooms out of the ramen immediately so they didn't get soggy fast and that was the move if you want the mushrooms to stay crunchy. The chicken broth was rich and light which was a great combo. I finished this bowl to the last drop. JINYA Chicken Ramen: my girlfriend got the chicken ramen with a side of bamboo. Warning on the bamboo: the bamboo comes dressed in sesame oil and sole hot oil so they are a little spicy. The chicken ramen broth was once again rich with flavor and light. The chicken chase was good and this ramen comes with thin noodles instead of wavy noodles. Overall JINYA hits the spot when craving ramen or some hot soup on a cold day. The chicken broth is legit and I will be closing back to try the pork broth soon. My only qualm with JINYA is the price at over $17 per bowl of ramen. There are cheaper ramen places but JINYA flavor makes up for the priciness.

We arrived around 5:40pm on a Friday night and there was plenty of seating. However, by the time we finished around 6:30pm the restaurant was bustling. The waiter told us he expected a very busy evening. Chicken karaage arrived first and was done very nicely. The exterior was super crispy and the inside juicy and moist. Yum. I was seriously tempted to order another plate since it only came with 6-7 pieces. Next, all the ramens came out. I got the shoyu truffle which I enjoyed a lot. I liked that you can taste the truffle flavor without it being overpowering. Also liked that the broth itself wasn't as salty as some ramen places. Noodles were al dente and all the toppings were tasty! Loved that the char sui actually had a good amount of lean meat versus it being mostly fat. The char grilled bamboo shoots were a nice touch as well. I tried my son's tonkotsu shoyu and enjoyed it too. I think my least favorite was my husband's tonkotsu gachi ramen, but he enjoyed it. I chose the tonkatsu ramen with the lunch special add on of pork and rice for 3.90. The ramen was a 7/10 for me. The egg, the pork and the broth lacked flavor. The flavor on the pork in the rice dish was better, but the rice was overcooked and mushy. I gave up on my bowl about halfway through and left unsatisfied. I don't think I'll be back.

It is next to mensho but the line is much shorter. I will say the system for their waiting list is a bit confusing. You are supposed to put your name on the list and then probably leave or form a queue. It wasn't very clear so we stood by the list until we were called. The menus are printed on soft vinyl-like paper, kind of like a photo book. It set the tone for the decadent meal! When we sat, we immediately received cucumber salad and potato salad as an appetizer. They had a few donburis, sizzling plates, and ramens. I chose a donburi as I feel it is relatively uncommon to find donburi in Japanese restaurants in Houston. It was so good! The meat was really tasty and the rice was perfect. I also had the geso karaage and it was quite good!! Overall, solid, classic Japanese food, elevated to perfection! They deserve 4.5 stars because come on it's 24/7 ramen. Parking is cool but limited. First impression walking in was that it has this really unique and dope vibe. I love the set up and it was giving spacious. There were cassette tapes aligned on the wall in the booth we sat in, which I thought was very creative. There was Anime characters above the doors when you first walk in, with Anime playing on the TVs at the bar. Oh yeah, THERES A FULL BAR if you ready to get your drink on. Now, off rip the host was annoying. She was kinda rushy and caught an attitude when we asked for a booth. We can't even describe the vibe she gave off fr. It was just BLEH. Our table was clean which is very important to us and our waitress Yasmin was kind and patient with our questions, and dietary substitutions. We ordered the Super Saiyan Nachos as an appetizer for $16. Maaann, these were so delicious!!!!! We actually substituted the pork for shiitake mushrooms and when I tell y'all we were surprised at the portion We both looked at each other like "YAAASSSSSS" Next came our Ramen orders which didn't take long at all. Not that we were counting because we were INDULGED in those nachos LOL Babii rated her Oxtail Ramen a '7/10' for $25. She would've preferred to get shiitake mushrooms because she particularly didn't like the fact that the Oxtails were shredded and not on the bone (which is what we both expected when reading it). She also would've liked if they gave her a spice option since she likes spicy ramen. Unfortunately, we had to purchase a nasty 'Kappa' sauce which was not worth the $1.50. To her the portion size was A1, however we paid for the meat so it wasn't worth the $25. Now, the Vegetable Garden to me was a '8.5/10' it was good, had amazing portion size and they were not lacking in the texture department. I mean, the spinach noodles were delish, vegetable cooked very Al dente. I cannot complain on that part. To me it was missing a bit of flavor, maybe salt would've done the trick. Overall though, it did have the flavor of the mushrooms which wasn't bad. Most importantly though, I felt light after consuming my meal. Therefore, I have to give it all a high rating.
