Umma Toast
Yuna C.

I was so excited to try here after seeing them on TikTok - initially came for the Twist Donut but ended up leaving more than satisfied; I'm still thinking about that Umma Toast! Their Twist Donut is different from others you see at an Asian/Korean bakery - thanks to the rice flour, it's chewier and best served hot. We got ours with cinnamon but you can have it classic with just white sugar. Between 10am-2pm, you can get the donut for just $2! The Umma Toast was so flavorful, leaning more sweet than savory but nonetheless delicious and filling! The crust is sliced off and the bread seems to be toasted with something sweet, in addition to the sweet cabbage coleslaw sauce but with the heartiness of the egg-spam scramble. We also tried their K-Smash burger - you can upgrade to double or triple patties and make it into a meal with a side of fries and soda. The bun was perfectly toasted and the burger felt both light yet satisfying with the crunch of the lettuce and pickles. Cannot wait to visit again and try their well known corn dogs!

After meal snack Friend never had a korean corn dog so we found this place nearby. Split the corn dog as we were all too full to have a full size one. He also ordered fries but difficult to put ketchup. Suggestion: add squeeze bottle instead of giving us ketchup packets since fries were in a plastic bag and difficult to put ketchup on (logistics). Corndog was decent but had better. It was cheesy but wasn't filled all the way and the batter needs improvement. Fries weren't very crispy but more soggy (need to be fry longer). Quick, easy and cheap snack. No fuzz / no frills. Hole in a wall fill with lota of yummy goodies. Simple.

We've passed by K-Munchies a few times and finally decided to try it out. I ordered from a sweet older man (owner if I had to guess). Ordered the spicy double patty smash burger, spicy chicken sandwich, and sweet k-skewers. I noticed on yelp that if you checked in, you get a free small fry. When I showed him, he was unfamiliar with the deal, but quickly gave me the small bag of fries. K-smash burger (double $7) - This was a decent burger served with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onion, and cheese. If you order the spicy, then there will be slices of marinated jalapenos. This gave the burger a nice kick. Chicken sandwich ($6) - Flavor wise, this was good because the house-made sauce and pickles paired nicely with the fried chicken patty. Similarly to the burger, if you order the spicy there will be jalapenos added. Unfortunately, the chicken was extremely dry. K-skewers (2 for $7) - This was my favorite item. The grilled rice cake was still soft on the inside, the sausage had a nice snap to them, and the sweet glaze paired nicely. Fries - Standard fries. I would come back for the smash burger and skewers, but next time I'd like to try the wings, as well.

Spicy soy garlic chicken!!!!

The name got our attention when we were craving for K chicken. Thank our lucky stars that they have a $1/wing special running until Sunday (1/28/2024) so we ordered about a dozen to try. Opted for half "spicy" which turns out to be the classic spicy soy garlic and the "sweet" which is also soy garlic sans the spice. The wings are surprisingly larger sized for $1. It has the perfect balance of breading to meat ratio and the sauce was tasty but not overpowering. Brought my kids here and they loved it! This is our new go-to spot now for Korean chicken.

K munchies to the rescue! Twice! Last week I had a long day of work in the city and I was craving a delicious and juicy hamburger. As I stop by flushing time to time to check out new spots, I was very tired and almost surrendered to eating a whopper from Burger King. As I checked for a nearby spot, k munchies sounded promising so I decided to try it out, walked a block up and there it was! Although it's a small restaurant, the staff is very kind and the menu is very simple. What caught my eye? That triple smash burger. it was late at night, I waited around 15 minutes for their combo special and if I could describe it... the buns were spot on- well toasted, vegetables were fresh and the meats were perfectly seasoned. I imagine this is what in n out tastes like. They also gave a lot of freshly made fries which I devoured in a few minutes. Now I came back again today because I wanted to try something different and got a few items to eat with a few friends. The crispy chicken sandwich.. now I'm not a huge fan of spicy compared to my friends so I got myself the sweet one. When I took my first bite, the first two things that caught my attention was the sweet sauce along with the innovative shredded cabbage on the sandwich. It's a crunchy explosion packed with that juicy chicken. Definitely give it a try because this may be your new spot! Will be back in a few weeks!

Worth the drive to get take out from here, even after a 45 min drive home, everything was still super crisp and warm! The storefront is small and they have some benches if you want to eat in. The owner was very nice and recommended other stuff to try for next time. They earned extra points by having a small parking lot in the back. Let's dig in on what I ordered: Spicy chicken sandwich - similar to the Popeyes chicken sandwich but with better flavor. The chicken was very crispy and moist; coated with a spicy and slightly sweet sauce. There were some jalapeños in there but was not overwhelming. Double Mac burger - smash burger style with the crispy edges and the super thin patties. The meat spilled out from the sides, bigger than the bun itself. It was a little hard to eat since it kept slipping from each side but that just means, I ate it that much faster! Sweet/spicy wings - double fried with a great sweet tangy glaze on the wings. Spicy wings had a nice kick to it but not too spicy. They were still warm when I got home. Twisted bread - super light and fluffy, rolled In cinnamon sugar. I regret only ordering one to try but this is definitely something I would come back for. Cheese balls - not too oily and the batter has a chewy texture to it. The ratio of batter to cheese was about 1:2 which is perfect! Fruity pebble milkshake/grain shake - I wish I had it right when it was made because that was the only thing that didn't survive the long drive home. It was an exceptionally warm day so the shakes just became cereal milk and grain milk. I've never had the Korean grain cereal before but it was an interesting combination. My regrets: Not ordering more twist breads, there is a reason why they had a deal to buy 12! Forgetting the self serve sauces on the side, the spicy mayo would've been amazing with the cheese balls Not having the shakes when I first got it! Not ordering the sweet potato balls, apparently that is another must have item alongside the twist bread.

Fried pickles

A family owned business in the Murray hill area of Queens that offer a variety of fried foods and burgers/tacos. Limited seating but they offer plastic gloves and hand sanitizer. Overall I would recommend this place, the price is decent and it definitely satisfied cravings. What was ordered: single patty smash burger, corndog, fried fried pickles, Sweet Chicken sandwich, fries (fries included for free with yelp check in). Fried pickles are a must if you have occasional cravings for something sour and crunchy. They use the same pickles used in the burgers for the fried pickles. The way they fried it, the pickles weren't separated, which is not a big deal. Smash burger was decent, though it was a bit on the cold side when I got it. In contrast the fries on the other hand was really good and was piping hot when we got it. We got the corndog with the potato cube coating. Apparently they add sugar etc when requested like the typical Korean corndog, but honestly I thought it was yummy without it. The sweet chicken sandwich was a favorite, imagine the sweet garlic coating on Korean fried chicken, but on a sandwich. Would recommend this item. On the day we visited there weren't many customers, but it might be hard for them to handle if there was a huge influx of customers at once. Again, it's a small establishment being run by father and son.

Soy garlic covered mozzarella

Located right in the middle of the action on Northern Blvd, this is a small little shop with a bunch of options for good eats, including korean corn dogs, kimbab, fried pastries and Korean fried chicken. I was drawn to the soy garlic option, which is an option that isn't available at the nearby Jongro Rice Hotdog. It tastes like soy garlic wings but on a hot dog! I wanted it with cheese instead of hot dog and they offered to make it on the spot for an added dollar. They were offering each of us a free sample of their Korean fried chicken, which was pretty decent for the price. Medium sized, crunchy, and juicy with a sticky soy garlic glaze for only $1.25/wing! The guy working at the counter was very friendly and engaging and wanting to connect with our large group of patrons.

I walked by on my way to the get some flowers and decided to pick up some hot dogs on my way back. The man working was very friendly and sweet. I wasn't sure what to get so I went with the #1 combo which included three different hot dogs. If you spend over $10, you get to spin gachapon machine. I won a twist bread. I shared my spoils with friends. The twist was delicious. We ate it while it was hot. It was nice and chewy reminding me of a mochi donut. The potato dog had a crunchy outside. I had the cheese part of the mixed dog which was nice also. I look forward to going back.

Was feeling a bit peckish after a walk with the wife so finally decided to come try this place. We always walk past it and got a mozzarella potato dog cheese balls and fried Oreos. This little gem has a bunch of fried food goodies, I can't imagine coming here after drinking to enjoy some greasy fried goods. Definitely a hole in the wall spot, the gentleman who helped us was very nice and suggestive. I'm goona come back and try out the other fried food options on my next walk.

Cheese balls and spicy soy garlic chicken wings

Came here for Korean cheese doughnut balls and spicy soy garlic chicken wings. The balls were fragile and crunchy. Cheese was delicious. The chickens were tasty, with garlic flavour. Just the right amount for a meal.

I rarely get fried food but I saw this place was highly rated and they were on Uber Eats. It's a lil further than the main area in Flushing so I'm glad I was able to order online instead of going out of my way. The single burger comes with fries and drink for $11 online. Didn't care for fries or soda. The burger is the flat top style with grilled onions with a slightly spicy sauce. Tasty burger but I wouldn't order it again since I don't want the combo. Also really salty.. The beef patty is very thin so not too filling even for someone small like me. L really liked the chicken wings. Not too saucy as other KFC. The drums were very meaty especially compared to BC. We haven't tried many KFC spots but this is in his top 2 so far. The wings are less salty since it's lightly brushed with sauce but still plenty of flavor. The chicken has good collagen so L really enjoyed it; juicier than BC since this wasn't as crispy. L only wants wings if we were to order from here again. Also tried the regular corn dogs. Hot dogs are also a rare treat for us since they're really unhealthy even if you get the expensive ones from WFs. L didn't care for the hot dog itself but I mean it's not bad if you're used to regular hot dogs. Glad we tried this place.

Here's what we ordered: ~ Tako Wasabi - 5/5 stars A fiery delight. This appetizer feartures chopped raw octopus marinated in wasabi. It has a lively zest from the wasabi and is topped with tobiko, which adds a pleasant contrast in texture. ~ Honey Makgeolli - 4/5 stars A traditional fermented Korean beverage that is light and pairs brilliantly with your meal. You received a generous basket of assorte greens, including romaine, kale, perilla leaves, dandelion leaves, nappa cabbage, and more. It is well worth the price and makes for a fun, interactive dining experience with your family and friends. We got the large beef combination platter which comes with ribeye, thin skirt, brisket, marinated kalbi, and marinated chuck flap. Most people stuck with water, while a couple got ginger ale. I ordered the soju flight but I ended up not liking it so my cousins shared it. The meal comes with different veggies as well as your choice of soup. We got the spicy tofu and split it 6 ways. The spice lived up to its name, so I didn't eat very much. The best part was meat. Despite there being 6 of us, there was plenty to go around. I think you have the option to cook it yourself or have them cook it for you and we chose the latter. While I enjoyed it, I wish there was more space. Most of the space was taken up by the accompaniments that come with it (veggies, etc), so there was hardly any room to put anything else. It didn't help that none of our dishes were cleared once we finished them and that no rice is included. Aside from that, both the food and service were great.

But there's no denying that BCD has upped their soondubu game considerably in the last decade+ with a thicker, more deeply flavored broth, and now easily rivals my longtime favorite and gold standard, the OG So Kong Dong in Fort Lee. Then I stumbled into a hack that changed my view: lunch! I ducked in for a late lunch on a whim while walking by one day, and this turned out to be a much chiller hour, unhurried and no reservation needed. I was promptly seated, my order taken, and the banchan swiftly laid out. The banchan spread is solid across the board (the little fried fish does nothing for me, but seems to be a highlight for everyone else). I especially love the kimchi, near-perfect IMO, and the pickled cucumber. There's a modest lunch discount, which is a nice bonus for someone who likes to order aggressively. I usually get an oyster, seafood, or assorted soondubu (with a raw egg cracked in), danger spicy of course! Or go the C1 combo route with a galbi (marinated bbq beef short ribs) + smaller soondubu. It's an enormous amount of food, so I take most of the galbi home and feel no shame about it. The galbi, by the way, has also gotten noticeably better over the years - meatier, tender, and the flavor is on point. I've also enjoyed their bibimbap, bulgogi, jap chae, and seafood pancake. Finally, let's talk heat - this chili-head loooves fire! And BCD's danger level is one of the rare instances where the spice level actually meets my punishing tolerance for heat, not some pretense at "American spicy.," despite this being a chain. Their danger level actually means business and brings tears to my eyes, literally. It's still not my favorite place ambience wise, and dinner remains a contact sport I've mostly opted out of, as gone are the days that I can tolerate a culinary mosh pit, and any wait longer than 10 minutes (and only for a superlative place) will trigger an automatic ejection of my presence. But for lunch? Unexpectedly great. 4 stars for dinner, 5 for lunch.
