The price is very cheap compared to other salons in the area and convenient for anyone living in Bucktown, Wicker Park, or Ukrainian Village. I finally found a place where I enjoy getting my hair done! I heard about this salon on Yelp, the salon is kind of far from where I live, but it is definitely worth it! I saw Lurri for a texurizer, and she did a great job! She knew exactly how to do deal with my crazy curly hair without all of the tugging and pulling, and she showed me the exact products to use on my hair. She was very thorough and told me what she would do with my hair before she started on it. Most salons I've been to do 2 or 3 heads at a time, I didn't have to deal with this here. Discriminates against African American women with thick or natural hair texture. I had a group coupon type deal voucher for this hair salon which I bought last year for $25. It was good for $50 in hair services or skincare services (you choose) and was expiring soon. I decided to get a cut and style for $50 and called in advance so they could recommend a stylist comfortable with African hair texture. When I got to the salon my stylist who was also black was really rude. I can easily say that she was the most disagreeable person I have ever met. She asked me a lot of questions about my hair like how I normally styled it which is normal but her demeanor and tone were so hostile it made my skin crawl. She was apparently really frustrated with my answers too because she kept cutting me off and saying stuff like "Can you just answer the ?" and "that's not what I asked you" which was new to me since I go to the salon every month and always answer questions that way with no problems. I actually made a mental note to give her a paltry tip (I normally tip extremely well) and not say a word to her for the remainder of my visit. Then she started to moan complaining that my hair was tangled (which it was but barely since I had wet it and combed it out before I went). I have a relaxer which has about an inch of new growth and because my new growth is a kinky texture I think that's what she was complaining about. Then she said in an actual accusatory tone "this is going to take me over 2 hours to do!" which is actually right since it takes about 2-3 hours for most stylists to do my hair. I asked her what her point was and she was like "I'm not going to do it this is too much work" then she recommended another salon nearby. She refused to give me her name but I think her name is Monica but it might also be Leslie or Lorie. Apparently she is the only African American employee there. I'm nearly 30 and in all of my years I have never had a stylist refuse service and what makes it worse is that her refusal was without merit. I know how unruly my hair can get and this isn't one of those times. I went to Salon 64 a few weeks ago and it was "a mess" the stylist patiently did my hair even saying that her hair looked "exactly the same". It took her 2 hours to do it. The ladies at Mylissa's Little Gallery gave me a relaxer when my hair was a huge fro and the stylist tried her best to make my hair straight. It wasn't the best service ever which is why I never went back but she tried really hard so I gave her a $40 tip. Years ago when my hair was actually locking up I had a stylist patiently apply generous amounts of conditioner to my hair so she get as much of the locks apart as possible. I don't expect most people will go above and beyond there job duties but I do expect people to do their jobs. This would be different if I had come in for a referral but I bought the voucher well in advance and K Chula denied me services which I had paid for. K Chula's manager said nobody there was comfortable working with my hair texture & suggested I get a skincare service instead but since that wasnt part of the voucher agreement (and the company who issued it agreed) and my service was deplorable I got a refund. The reviews here seem great and it would have been nice to know what everyone else was talking about but unfortunately I didn't get that chance. K Chula should keep in mind that its located in Chicago and there are a lot of black women in the city who might want to have a wash and press and just happen to have very thick kinky hair. It would be in their best judgement to train their current stylists on how to work with that hair texture or at the very least check their attitudes. read more

Thanks K Chula for totally screwing me. Bought the YouSwoop on November 18th. I called before I even bought the YouSwoop to ensure there were appointments open for 2 facials for my sister and I to come on her birthday. Made back to back appointments on Dec. 23rd 5:30-7:30. Thank God my Mom invited herself on our sisterly outing since this caused me to call and see if we could get in any earlier (so we could spend the maximum time together) and what do ya know, they never booked my first appointment! There was nothing they could do since they have one esthetician and the earliest they could get me in was Jan 21st. What a joke...too bad because I live about a mile away and would have come back had I liked the salon and recommended it to my friends. Now I have to contact YouSwoop to get a refund. Let me start by saying that I love Tammy and am so impressed with everything about the salon. Tammy has given me the best cuts I've had in years! I bought a YouSwoop and used it for a facial. The tech, Evelyn, was really nice and my appointment started within 5 minutes of the booked time. It was very relaxing. My only critique was the radio playing in the facial room area. It was kinda hard to relax during commercials. They should get a little CD player or ipod speaker thing so you don't have to hear McDonald's commercials while trying to relax. Lurri recently gave me the *best* cut I've had in years and years and years. She also covered the pesky gray hairs on my head with beautiful highlights -- very natural looking. I love my new do, and I've been getting heaps of compliments. I will most certainly be a return customer!! I have curly, fragile hair. I was ready to try a straight style. I purchased a youswoop and used it for a facial from Fay. She is wonderful. She explained every step of the process, and customized the products to my skin's needs and my preferances. There was no product-pushing. The negative is that the facial room is not ideal. There is little noise insulation, and it seems a bit cramped. Kelly is an amazing stylist that saved me from a really terrible haircut AND taught me to how to do my hair. Finally. I'm 28 years old with thick, wavy hair that can range from crazy curly to straight. I've never felt comfortable doing it--some days it looks great and others it doesn't. There didn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it, so I felt like I was destined to roll the dice with my hair every morning. I went to K Chula when I finally determined that my previous stylist wasn't...good. It probably took me too long to realize that my preponderance of bad hair days correlated to the time I had been seeing her, but what can I say? I'm an optimist. Kelly fixed my haircut. I left feeling like I loved my hair for the first time in years. She showed me a great product that I am now obsessed with, she showed me a great technique that was simple and ALWAYS works for doing my hair, and she's never let me down since. The salon isn't overpacked and loud like some places, and Kelly has never pressured me into buying anything I didn't want. Carrie was my hairstylist for my August 2007 wedding. She and Jen traveled to our hotel the morning of the wedding and worked on me, my mom, my mother-in-law and five of my bridesmaids. Everyone turned out beautifully. My hair is unruly, to say the least, especially in the heat and humidity of the summer. But Carrie got it to behave and it held for more than 12 hours. So I arrived to a very neat and clean salon. The receptionist was nice and complimentary. As I sat with Lurri she gave me a great consult and we talked about everything. She did a great job on my cut and color. She is an old movie buff as am I so we had loads to talk about. Ok back on point. She was amazing and I could tip on the CC. How awesome is that? I will admit it was a bit pricey for me, but I am growing out my short hair so I haven't been spending money on it. But it was worth it!
