I understand the mixed reviews on here, because honestly, my opinion is equally as mixed. The naan bread was the best thing we had here. The chicken in the Tikka Masala was too chewy & dry and it didn't taste like quality meat. The rice was bland, and our appetizer was cold. The sauces themselves were good and had just the right amount of flavor. It was not bad and I would think about going again. But what turned the tables to the negative was the service, we stood not a foot from 2 men in the front for 10 minutes before getting acknowledged. I've lived in Hackensack for some time and got familiar with good Indian Cuisine. Art Of Spice, Tandoori Chef (I no longer go there for other reasons), and Mantra are some of my favorites. My family and I went to Jyoti Exotic Indian Cuisine this weekend because Indian food is my oldest son's new found love. There was a lunch buffet, which is pretty typical for Indian Cuisine, but we arrived fairly late (2:30PM and the buffet closes at 3:00PM). The atmosphere was kind of weird. We walked in and everyone was staring at us, the employees and the customers. We felt extremely awkward immediately, but we are there for the same reasons that everyone else was... to eat as much as we possibly can before the restaurant closes. The owner was extremely nice and visited our table and was telling us how he has been there since the 90's. He talked about his family and such. It made the experience a little better. One thing that bothered us was that every table had naan, except ours. The waiter refilled the naan for others a few times.. still we had none. We kept our mouths shut.. maybe none was left. Lastly, and the main reason for only a 2 star review is that the food wasn't that good. The only meal I enjoyed was the paneer.. I forgot how it was prepared. Nothing else was worthy to mention, including the dessert. I came here based on the reviews and I wanted to give an honest one. If you're in the market for Indian, visit Hackensack. First, I would like to tell you about the surroundings and amenities. Being seated was no issue and the gentlemen even pulled the chair out for us to sit down. The water served had greenery inside the glass's and was placed upon our rocking table, which made for a fun balancing act for the remainder of our dinner. The menu's had a diner characteristic to them and was over burdened with choices. The only music in the place was this tacky sound coming from the kitchen and the ambiance was the one of children crying. The temperature of the dinning hall was well below comfort so we continued our journey with jackets on. Secondarily we will talk about the service. As I stated before our entry went well. After, a gentlemen placed our menu's on top of our plates then returned in ten minuets to retrieve our wants. At this moment, I explained the leaf floating in our glasses and he was kind enough to return with two glasses that had fresher leaves. We received our appetizer from a man carrying them upon a steel oven tray who showed no interest upon the placement. One of the staff was kind enough to walk around in her hoodie and ask the patrons about the food. (If only I was one of those lucky few.) Cleaning the table went well since I was the one who put the dishes into a pile and asked if they could be taken away. In the background hoodie girl wiped her nose then proceeded in one terrible motion to grab fresh plates. Thirdly, the food. The vegetarian appetizer was mashed potatoes fried. I felt as if I was celebrating saint Patrick's day in the wrong restaurant. Fried isn't the word I'm looking for. Was more ultra crispy. Dinner was recognizable at least since the kofta was filled with the same mashed potatoes in my appetizer. The sauce had leftover quality to it. As if at one point it could have been good. All in all I'll never go again and I hope they use this review for educational purposes. I love Indian food and want this one to be great since they are close. This place is fantastic. I've eaten at various Indian restaurants, and I have to say this is without a doubt my favorite. I end up going just about every weekend for the lunch buffet. They have a decent sized assortment of hot food (both vegetarian and non-vegetarian), as well as soups, salad, deserts and tea. My personal favorite would have to be the chicken tikka masala, and lets not forget the freshly made naan, followed by a nice hot cup of tea. More often than not I find the chicken tikka masala that I try at other restaurants to be a bit lacking. However, the blend of spices and balance of ingredients the chefs use at Jyoti are absolutely perfect; the taste, texture and consistency are all generally flawless. The staff is very friendly and professional. They are also extremely attentive, no matter how many people they may be waiting on at any given moment. It's not often that I find a restaurant where I don't have to ask for something at one point or another. Moving on to the atmosphere; the overall ambiance is very nice. It's dimly lit, and nicely decorated. They recently changed the layout of the buffet to create more space for some new deserts that they now offer. My coworkers and I frequent this establishment when we have the appetite for a huge meal. The buffet is only $9.99 (which is the cheapest I've ever paid) and the food is awesome. I love spice and I always feel like Indian restaurants dumb down the heat for the buffets...this place didn't. Almost every other diner was Indian...which is always a good sign. They also have a huge room on the side for private parties. Unfortunately there are 2 other decent Indian buffets closer to my house...this is a bit of a hike for me. But I will try to plan more trips to Wayne/Willowbrook just so I can eat here again. I used to love this restaurant. I like the décor and the location. But some thing's can definitely be worked on. It's not that restaurant is 'bad'; or that the food is terrible. I just didn't like the fact that the staff and waiters can't answer questions. They either don't understand you or don't know the answer. I have a restricted diet and can't eat dairy products or animal products. When I asked the waiter what entrees were dairy free, he didn't really answer my question. Instead of asking the chef, he stated that all entrees contained dairy... I know for a fact that this wasn't true, but I just order some random eggplant dish because he was just staring at me.. My advice to the owners is, educate your staff about food allergies and recommendations for people with diet restrictions. Accommodate your customers... As a customer, the answer 'I don't know" is simply not acceptable and makes me feel like you really don't care about your job or about me as a paying customer. But "I don't know, let me find out" is a better answer and shows me you care about your customers and about fulfilling your job duties.. which is to take my order appropriately. Next time I come here, I expect quality service. If my question does not get answered, I will request to speak to a manager and have him/her take my order. read more

Went to their weekday lunch buffet for the first time and I liked it. Their chicken tikka masala was good, their aloo gobi was top-notch. They had an urn of chai going for customers to help themselves, and some good naan came complimentary. Also for dessert they had home-made gulab jaman which were awesome, very warm and soft. This is the first time I had gulabs in a restaurant that weren't from a can. The reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the one thing I was that the chicken korma was disappointing. It was bland, with a consistency that was too thin and even - no chunks of any flavorful things I expect in a curry like onions and garlic. I know they say on their web site that they keep the curries mild at the buffet but you can have a flavorful curry that isn't too spicy. I had the paneer tikka appetizer as my meal - it was a bit of a surprise, because I've never seen it prepared this way. Rather than being served dry like tandoori chicken, it had a shiny, somewhat translucent sauce on it that made it look like Chinese food (it looked kind of like sweet and sour sauce). I was a bit hesitant, but it was actually pretty tasty. The spiciness crept up on me as I ate. My boyfriend enjoyed his goat, and we shared some bread stuffed with tandoori chicken. Pretty tasty, but again, nothing amazing. Overall the service was good, and the prices are reasonable. Would try it again. We ordered naan bread, garlic bread, chicken tikki masala and lamb curry. Portions were great for two, and everything tasted great. I love spicy food and I can always count on Indian restaurants to deliver! Took off one star however, for the slow service. It looks like it's family owned and operated, so no one seemed to be expected to continuously check on customers. That's not my issue, my complaint is that while waiting I took the dog out of the car and walked him around the back, noticing that a kitchen chef was walking out, on what I thought might be a smoke break. But no, it was a pee break in the hedge behind the restaurant - ugh. I'm so disgusted seeing a dude taking a casual piss and not caring that a customer has seen him. Now does he wash his hands when he's back in the kitchen, my answer is probably not. He's been lazy enough not to use the correct facilities do you think he'll do the right thing and not get us sick. We came in to place a place a take out order and have a few drinks at the bar which I saw they had on line. It was bizarre, but they would not let us sit at the bar, review the menu and then place the order. We had to stand by the cash register and then place a order before we could be seated. The cash register attendant who took our order was fairly familiar with the menu but did make factual errors. Once the order was taken, we were led to the bar which only had seating for 4-5 people. They had a cocktail menu, but regardless of what you ordered, the bartender (who by the way was the same cash register attendant) did not know any drinks and had to look things up or ask for help. They had no garnishes for drinks including lime wedges or cherries. The drink prices were not discounted despite the lack of knowledge, drink making abilities or even ingredients of ordered drinks. The food we took home. The serving portions were ok as was the food. Nan was a bit dry. Food did not leave you hungry. Not memorable either. It got the job done. I did forget to mention that the one item I would go back for was the hot n sour soup. It's an indo-Chinese take on a simple soup that was simply packed with flavor. read more
