Such a cool place! Would've been one of my go to dive bars in Providence if not for the location. Stumbled upon this place on a Friday night after exploring few other places. I was also skeptical since most of the reviews seemed like they were from couple of years ago. The entrance is sort of speakeasy styled, and you do go through velvet curtains into a semi dim lit room. There are some tables around the bar and few couch seats otherwise, so not a huge space. The prices of their standard cocktails have gone up to 7$ which is still pretty good and the speciality ones are for 10$. Rose, the bartender was amazing and did a great job! They do have few finger foods on their menu if you're craving a little snack. The decor is simplistic yet modern and pretty well done. It wasn't packed when I went in but people came in groups and waves and wasn't loud or anything. Though Justine's does seem to be a signal of impending hipster-ification (the first step to gentrification) in Olneyville, it's nice to find a place a bit tucked away from the usual spots. We stopped by on a rainy Saturday night, made it past the burly (but very friendly!) bouncer through the velvet curtains, and found ourselves in an Art Deco/Nouveau room, lit with great vintage light fixture and vaguely Chinoiserie wallpaper. This place could be a speakeasy set for some kind of 1920-1930s era period piece movie. One qualm: the layout of the place isn't the most optimal; there could be more seats (or a banquette) replacing the tiny two-tops lining the walls. But it just looks great, so I will respect aesthetic choices. I think the cherries they use are either Luxardo or home-brandied. My estimation of a bar's quality ratchets down about 10 notches if I see that there are the fluorescent fake-maraschino cherries I hate behind the bar, so I knew upon arriving that I was in for a treat. They stock quality ingredients so even your basic drinks aren't made with some awful rotgut-quality well liquor. The drinks menu is well-curated -- no fluff, no filler, no dumb sugar confections with tiresomely risque names. Instead, classic cocktails for $5 each and a few inspired original creations for $8.50 each. I saw some people drinking Miller High Lifes (yeah, yeah, champagne of beers) and this seemed out of place to me, but to each their own. We had the vodka rock & rye and a Manhattan, and both drinks were generously poured and expertly made (the Manhattan is strong and vermouth-heavy, so keep that in mind if your preferences differ). I saw a group of ladies having French 75s, and while I do enjoy a good French 75, I wanted to try something a little more obscure. My drink was great even if the bitter lemon soda wasn't quite a real quinine-based bitter lemon (they use Polar brand seltzer/mixers). This isn't really a place where the bartender wants to have too much small talk with you: this place focuses on delivering well-made cocktails, not conversation. And I respect that a lot. read more

I was told about this place by my friend Diego, who learned about it from a Yelper....Social Media does work, I hope the owner recognizes how much business he is getting from the Yelp community. It is never a good idea to alienate any particular group (in reference to Elena's comment back in May 2013). There is no sign just look for the number 11 on top of the door and the sexy lingerie front......I guess the street is Westminster......as you walk into the bar, you are greeted with a nice cozy, warm lounge that has lots of class and warmth. The decor is kind of 50's with nice comfy couches and plenty of little tables. We were there on a Tuesday night and around 9 o'clock..there was a nice group of patrons. Hidden in the backroom of a tiny, dark lingerie shop, this little place is a fairly thorough embodiment of the term "hidden gem". Once inside, the bar has an understated, authentic Art Deco vibe. Some places that style themselves as speakeasys come off as kitschy in the same way that 50s-themed diners do. Not the case with Justine's. The space is accented with fresh flowers, and a great drinks menu with cameos by a lot of classic players, like the Bronx cocktail, daiquiris, and stingers. Just be aware this is not a restaurant. They do have a limited food menu, but it's small, and mostly snacks. This is a place to just sit with one or two friends, and enjoy a quiet drink. And you will enjoy them, because they are both delicious, and inexpensive. I had two delicious French 75s for about $20, which is pretty much unheard of in other places that don't even offer half the atmosphere of Justine's. read more

There is a bouncer at the counter where the register would be and after checking for IDs, he opens the curtains for you to enter the bar. The drinks were very good. Upon entering, you'll get a sly look from the pretty girl behind the desk, who appears to be there to sell you lacy nothings and thigh-highs. However, she'll quickly turn around and open the black velvet curtain to reveal... Justine's. A small, dimly-lit bar with gorgeous furnishings and golden walls. There's no music, so everyone speaks in a hushed whisper, which just ads to the magic. The menu reads as such: classic cocktails that have been kicked up a notch, $5 on one page, $8.50 on another. There's also a decent wine and beer selection, and small plates if you need a nosh, which we did. To go with my Charlie Chaplin (a sloe gin and brandy mix that was sort of a take on the classic Hawaiian Punch - weird, but delicious and surprisingly not that sweet) and my hubee's Manhattan, we ordered a cheese plate. I'm sad to say that, by the time the cheese plate arrived, we were done with our teensy $5 tipples, so we went for round two. That time, I did the Ward 8 - a citrusy rye concoction that was truly fabulous. If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, hightail it out of your comfort zone and head down to Olneyville Square, where the one-of-a-kind adventure that is Justine's has only just begun. If you answered "no" to all of these questions, I regret to say that there is something terribly wrong with you. Justine's is a challenge to access at first. During the day, it's impossible to find, as curtains obscure what's going on behind its glass windows. And at night, there is no proper signage. Just look for the door with #11 on it, beside a "Cash for Gold" place. If all else fails, look for the two nearly-naked mannequins wearing little wisps of nothing. That, my friend, is no crazy ghetto bordello. That is the entrance to Justine's. This place truly is "business in front, party in the back." Visitors can peruse and shop a fully functioning, tiny lingerie store before heading through a thick curtain into the venue's hidden bar. Word of mouth, whether positive or negative, travels quickly, and Justine's has benefitted from some terrific buzz. If you arrive late on a weekend night (anytime after 10pm), you may have to wait, as my friend and I did, a half hour before being allowed entrance to the bar. I recommend sticking around--sniff a candle or two, play with the lacy unmentionables, chat up the friendly shopkeeper, because the bar experience is oh so worth the wait. After three visits, I believe I've successfully made my way through nearly the entire cocktail list. At these prices and considering their quality, that is easy to do. The strongest: War and Fame. The sweetest: the Charlie Chaplin. The Stinger has a nice, minty bite. My favorite: a two-way tie between El Gordo and The Gibson, which comes with a tiny yet potent cocktail onion that infuses the flavor of the entire drink, making it sweet and earthy (bring mints!). The food menu is abbreviated; this is not a place to settle in for a full dinner. But if you want to accompany all the drinking with a fruit and cheese board, or some delicious marcona almonds, you will be satisfied. The décor is somewhat oriental, dimly lit with vintage chandeliers, and sprays of fresh lilies at the bar. It's all very seductive. I enjoy tucking into the corner booth and watching a strange and beautiful night unfold here. I struggled writing this review because I love the clandestine obscurity that still, sort of, characterizes the vibe at Justine's. I don't want the double edged sword of success to ruin that for the early explorers. But this cool cat is already at least half out of the bag, so what can any single starry-eyed romantic do to keep it from achieving full-on cult status? Phone your friend, lock arms with your lover, recruit your whole crew for a night out in Providence that's - for now - our little secret. read more

If The Avery and The Eddy hooked up and had a speakeasy child... they'd name it Justine. At first the Hus and i walked by.... a couple of times... i wasn't too happy about this as it's in a semi-sketchy section of town. We hop into the seemingly normal store and say... "Is this.... Justine's?" indeed it was.... After our ID's had been checked by the person at the door we were allowed into their inner sanctum. After bellying up to the bar we were promptly handed the drink menus and we were taken back by the VERY reasonable prices... I decided to go with the Kosmonaut (under $10) - a mandarin vodka concoction which tasted like a fancy Fanta with a kick... not to mention stars on top... a nice touch. For my second i went with the Charlie Chaplin ($5... yes, i said $5). This was my first encounter with Sloe Gin but certainly not my last. Cool vibe, great service, meh cocktails. Four of us went to this bar on Friday night around 7:30. The speakeasy vibe was pretty cool -- it didn't feel too exclusive, but it did feel private. We were the first people there and were warmly greeted by the bartender/barback. People started showing up promptly after we did and by 8:30, the actual bar was full (though there were plenty of tables for others). The bartender was super kind and helpful. They answered any questions and made suggestions. It was super inviting and we were really excited. The drink menu offerings were okay -- nothing terribly inventive, fairly standard cocktail fare. I ordered an aviation for my first cocktail, which was by far the best made drink (it's also a classic). Another person ordered the White Lighter (a mezcal cocktail) which didn't really work somehow. My second cocktail was the pineapple juice/rum/grenadine cocktail, which surprisingly didn't really come together. The others ordered the Pimms Cup which was fine, standard, and is relatively easy to make. I don't think the problem was the bartender; the drinks just weren't that interesting. Or, put another way, the drinks didn't match the cool vibe and excellent staff. Maybe they'll revamp their menu? Pretty sure you are just cooler for walking in the door of this place. I refuse to call it trendy - Justine's is too good for that. Sexy? Yes. Edgy? Certainly. And these are not weak excuses for cocktails, no no: These are old fashioned, pre-prohibition style cocktails to go with the cool speakeasy vibe of the place. I have been here twice, and my favorites are the daiquiri, and the Southside, which is a refreshing cocktail (do not quote me, but I am pretty sure it is a gin drink), and I am told, one of their signatures.
