What's not to love about Juniper on Main. We sat outside on a warm summer day for lunch. It was col enough and our server was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, the sweet tea was excellent, food was to die for. I love low country fare and they get it right. Carb cakes - killer. Cornbread - on par with best I've ever had, blackened catfish - chefs kiss, scallops and shrimp- I just wanted more!!, and a desert that was decadent. I'll keep coming back as it's so close to home.
I've had Juniper on Main saved in my collections for a while and this past weekend (Memorial Day/Race weekend) we decided to give them a try while attempting to avoid the crowds that were sure to be present in others parts of the city. This place is small...much smaller than I had imagined. In my opinion, there isn't really a good seat in the house, literally, because the restaurant is a converted home in a residential setting. Each and every table is either by the front door, near the kitchen, or restroom-adjacent. It also seemed like they were having some plumbing issues or something, because one area was blocked off making the seating situation even more limited. It was nice out, so we probably should've dined on the patio. Our server never introduced himself by name, so I didn't learn that tidbit of info until we got the bill. We ordered the deviled eggs flight, which he told us that he couldn't tell us about because "it's different every time". He did check for any allergens, which was thoughtful. The deviled eggs themselves were very much a blank canvas and the toppings were the entire show. Server asked if we wanted to play egg roulette or if we wanted him to tell us what they were. We wanted to know, so he pointed to each...extremely close, and I was so distracted by his finger hovering so dangerously close to my food that all I heard was "chimichuri". I have no clue what the others were. Oh, I think one was chili crisp! I also had the crab cake and loved the aioli that it was served with. My husband had the BLT, which comes with an egg on it and is served on Texas Toast. He's not a fan of Texas Toast, but he enjoyed the sandwich. If I were rating this on food alone, it would be 4 stars, but the cramped atmosphere and level of service brings it down to a 3 for me.
Just moved here from SC and have already been here twice! Everyone I bring absolutely loves it. Tastes like you are at the beach! The outdoor seating is so nice on a cool evening! Food comes out very fast. I haven't had a thing I didn't like!
We've returned to Juniper on Main twice since our initial visit. Both times we dined outside on their lovely patio and both visits were great experiences. On today's visit, Hannah took wonderful care of us. She told us she was happy we chose to dine on the patio so she, too, could appreciate this unusually warm February day. We appreciated her friendly and upbeat personality! Upon her recommendation, we ordered the citrus shrimp tacos as well as the jerk chicken tacos and upgraded to the coconut rice and beans as the side for both. We also had to order the hot honey chicken tenders with slaw and fries, which has become a menu favorite of ours as it is 100% southernly delicious. And, we have lots of yummy leftovers to enjoy, which is always a plus!
My family and I came here on a very crowded Carmel night and we were able to get in for a family dinner. The service was very friendly. The ambiance was comfortable. We ordered Quesadillas, bacon and pimento grilled cheese, fried chicken platter, short rib and pimento grilled cheese. It was okay. Our food came out very very quickly. Some of this was fried. Oh wow, we all said, that was quick we all added. But it was cold and tasted like it had been made some time ago. My wife had been here several times and always talked about how great it was. This time she said it was off - it was different. I don't know if we ordered something popular and these were premade or what happened. It looked good. Just seemed cold and old.
What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday! Took my mom here for her birthday and we had such a good experience! We ordered the crab artichoke dip for appetizer. I had the crab Rangoon tacos, while my mom had the catfish sandwich. Everything tasted amazing and perfectly seasoned! Our server was Mitch and he was absolutely pleasant! We sat on the outdoor patio, which was a wraparound porch. They had seating indoor, but it was a beautiful day to sit outside. I was pleased to see that they had a parking lot since they are on busy Main Street. The bathrooms were clean which is always a plus. Overall we had a great experience and I would gladly go back!
Hello, delicious South Carolina cookin'. We've been here a few times but this is my first review. Our past experience taught us that their portions are large for two seniors so we decided to find something to split for lunch and I immediately landed on the short ribs, dinner portion. They offer a lunch portion a well plus something similar on the sandwich menu. This was more than enough for the two of us since the meal is so rich. The dinner portion has two large pieces of beef lying atop cheese grits, all of this partly covered with a rich stout gravy. Three pieces of cornbread were served on the side. This also comes with a topping of pimento cheese sauce which we had served on the side. I never touched it as it just wasn't needed! The beef was tender but I still had to use my knife to cut it. The grits were outstanding, just the right flavor for both of us, and the gravy was absolute perfection. The cornbread was good as well. Each part of this meal complemented the other nicely. We both certainly recommend it as you can see by our empty plates. BTW, they do not split meals in the kitchen but will bring an extra plate.
I used to really love this restaurant, especially for the flavor profiles and consistency of high-quality menu items and ingredients. Lately, especially during my last visit, I am so sad to this quaint gem go downhill. My spouse and I arrived during a non-busy time and yet despite one person a table for two at the front of the restaurant, surrounded by several open tables, we were squeezed in between two parties in the back, so close to them that I couldn't hear my spouse across the table - very uncomfortable. Luckily we were able to move, after barely fitting through the tight space again to exit (tables were less than a foot from on another). I ordered a salad, which was pretty good, but I had to remove several brown pieces. My husband got the fried chicken meal which was decent, not great (no seasoning), but the collard greens were awful - we both gagged and had to spit them out. Clearly no one is tasting the food before serving it. The greens tasted completely metallic. Luckily we were able to get a different side, fresh green beans, which was a little better (very al dente, almost raw), but nothing was great. We ordered hummingbird cake to-go, my favorite part of coming here. I didn't think to check it before leaving, I just trusted it was great, as it had always been in the past. Upon getting home to indulge, we discovered it was a very stale, tiny piece of white cake, with white frosting, and a little coconut - NO hummingbird cake and no pineapple relish. I was very sad! I contacted the restaurant, just hoping to have the cake replaced when it's made correctly again, and never heard back. I'm not sure if they're too busy to care but quality control needs to be in place again. Until then, please spend your money at a place where quality matches the price, because this is not it (not anymore).
Such a great spot for a lunch break! The service was excellent, the atmosphere was relaxing and the beautiful views of Carmel made the experience even better. Definitely a nice place to step away, enjoy a good meal and recharge!
Came here to dinner with some friends and wished I had taken more photos! The minute I walked in I couldn't help but take in the airy and well-lit restaurant. I love that they have plenty of outside seating as well! I was quickly greeted by staff and taken to our table. Service was very quick and our waiter was very patient with us as we scanned the menu. We ordered the fried green tomatoes for table (based on the waiter's recc) and we are so glad that we did!! Perfectly crispy and tasted great with the sauce it came with. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and the arugula salad on the side and it was good as well!! We will definitely be back to try more items off the menu!
We were visiting family who live nearby and wanted to take them somewhere they had not been previously and we chose Juniper based on their menu and reviews and we were not disappointed. Our server was attentive and friendly. We ordered the pimento dip and crab cake to start. The dip was not quite as good as we expected based on prior reviews. It was good not great. We enjoyed the crab cakes more which were full of crab. The entrees were the stars though - I had the peach glazed salmon which was cooked perfectly and the glaze was super flavorful. The collard greens were tender and had a tasty smoke flavor. A couple folks had short rib entrees and one had one of the shrimp and grits options. The servings were very hearty especially for the prices. All in our party agreed they would definitely return and happily order the same dish although there are many items on the menu we all want to try. We had seats inside and it was fresh and clean and not too loud despite being busy. Great place!
Nice litttle dining place. They have outdoor seating in warm weather. Parking is good nearby. Started with crab cakes, it was enjoyable when dipping on lemon aioli as the flavoring was lacking. I had to get 2 main courses with local stout glazed short ribs and grilled rib eye chimichurri as both looked really good. Both meat were tender and well flavored. Yum!!! Their fries are also very well flavored. Wifey got the peach glazed salmon. It was also well flavored. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Overall, had a really good time dining here.
*2.25/5* Unwhelming. - Service was fine to average. - Good ambiance outside. - The red wine sangria wasn't worth the price for the pitcher; house red with maybe 5 slices of assorted fruits. - The crab and artichoke dip tasted good. The pimento cheese dip was fine; closer to a nacho cheese dip. Both dips came with too few naan dippers to finish the dip (they charged extra for extra naan to finish the dip). - The cajun pasta was fine. Pasta was cooked well. I got it with chicken, which tasted good. The sauce was fine. - The hot honey chicken tenders were crispy, but lacked flavor. - The CBR chicken sandwich was good. Crispy and good size. - Do not order the side mac n cheese. $6 for some Stouffer's mac n cheese topped with the pimento cheese dip (that's basically nacho cheese dip). Overall, if someone asked to meet here for a meal I would request another restaurant but I'd still eat here if they insisted.

Beautiful chic interior, very homey with delicious southern food! We were house hunting nearby and decided to stop in for lunch after seeing their menu on devour Indy. Our server offered many recommendations, one of them being the Brussel spouts...These were the best I've ever eaten. Cooked to perfection and the cranberries were a nice addition. For the main course, I had the chicken salad & my husband had the Hot honey chicken. My chicken salad was so good with a nice portion, the salad that it was served with had this flavorful vinaigrette that reminded me of salad I had in Italy. The chicken was so crispy and didn't have that fried greasy flavor, the hot honey marinade was delicious and I was so surprised it came with 3 pieces of chicken. I would recommend the chicken to anyone if you don't know what to get! I decided to get the tea, half sweet on a whim and it was so good. Our server even gave us one to go! My devour meal came with the Hummingbird cake for dessert it was SO freaking good. It's almost like carrot cake with a twist. Random but I was shocked they had a Medify air purifier inside (I have this model at home, they're the best). Good air quality is huge to me & you don't leave smelling like your meal! I don't ever see this when dining out. S/o to whoever's idea that was- this alone would make me return. The food was not cheap but the quality, portion, & experience made it worth it. First time coming here with my fiancée. We came during devour food week. Upon walking in the ambiance was incredibly cute and intimate. See dishes below. It was a three course meal which was very tasty. Will definitely be coming back in the future. The staff and service were timely and very kind. read more

Juniper on Main is a cute, little house off Main Street in the Carmel Arts District. The quaint restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating. I've visited before, but my most recent experience was with a group of 15 of my coworkers for a bit of out-of-office fun. As I was walking up, the waiter seemed frazzled that we would want to split the check and said this request would be an additional 20 minutes at the end of our meal. No one in our party was stressed about this, but I get that he wanted to set expectations since other groups may not be so kind about a wait. When we went to order, he rattled off a list of menu options that were unavailable: including the deviled eggs that are a major draw to the restaurant. Bummer. Despite these set backs, the ambience and the food were delightful. I got the CBR chicken sandwich. It was tasty and nicely presented. My friend let me try a bite of her short rib and grilled Pimento cheese sandwich. Let me tell you... that was amazing. I'd be back for that. Tip: There is parking behind the restaurant if you can't find street parking! read more

Update: I went a month ago and thought Juniper on Main was great and that opinion still stands. The fig salad was so good that I had to have it again. The chicken is moist and tasty. The pickled onions were outstanding. The strawberries and blackberries were fresh as were the greens. The goat cheese fritters are to die for. They should consider adding them as an appetizer. To change it up, I had the red sangria which was good and an appetizer of cornbread. The amount is cornbread was huge. It was warm and the accompanying honey butter made it. This time we sat outside which was lovely. Service was excellent. read more

We had a great lunch in the heart of Carmel! We were able to be seated right away, both inside and outside, and we served quickly. Our waitress was amazing throughout or whole stay and our group all loved their food! I got the chicken salad sandwich which was delicious! Our food came quickly and we left happy! read more

We met friends for dinner and libations at Juniper. It was our first visit and well deserving of the 5 star rating by many reviewers. We tried to make reservations indoors but they were full. You need to call a week in advance. We were able to get a table out on their patio, which was delightful. Our server found us a quiet table, which was perfect. We ordered a bottle of wine and craft beers from their menu. The prices and selection are good on the beverages. The food is Southern themed - Charleston and Savanna. The menu is diverse and it was hard to make a decision because everything looked good. Makenna, our server was 5 star fabulous. She was friendly, engaging, and attentive. The food came out quickly and Makenna kept our beverages full. We loved the Flight of Deviled Eggs. The eggs had different toppings and were interesting. I had the Low Country Boil, which reminded me of an East Coast vacation. There was lots of sausage, shrimp and potatoes cooked in Old Bay Seasoning. The cole slaw is sweet and creamy. The portions were generous and filling. The Hot Honey Friend Chicken had a delicious breading and the chicken was moist. The hot honey was delicious. The fries were good. Our friend had the Stout Braised Short Ribs, which were tasty, tender and moist. The cheesy grits were good and the okra was just ok. The Key Lime Cake is artfully prepared. The cake is light, moist and delicious. It is sharable, but you won't want to share it. There is some parking in the back but we found parking on the street. You need to get there early (before 6) to get a table and nearby parking. We loved Junipers and will return. read more

This has become my new favorite spot! I've tried the bbq pulled pork sandwich, which was good... but their salads really blew me away. The salad is huge for the price, filled with great veggies and protein - i always recommend them to anyone who comes with. I totally recommend sitting on the patio, if it's nice. This is such a great restaurant in the heart of downtown Carmel. This is only my second time there. Service was fantastic, food was phenomenal, and we were drawn in by the Devour Indy menu. We shared the corn bread appetizer, which was delicious and came out hot and served with a side of butter. For my dinner, I ended up getting the garden salad (description from the Devour Menu: Sweet Corn and Basil Relish, Tomato, Cucumber, Cheddar, Romaine, Arugula, Fresh Herb Ranch (GF) as a starter, Black 'n Blue Alfredo Florentine Pasta (description from the Devour menu: Fischer Farm Beef Filet, Creamed Spinach Alfredo, Cherry Tomato, Parmesan Cheese), and the Hummingbird Cake for dessert (description from the Devour Indy menu: Pineapple, Banana, Pecan, Coconut, Cream Cheese Frosting with Grilled Pineapple Relish). They have such unique offerings. When I called to make our reservation, the gentleman who answered the phone was also very pleasant and helpful. Highly recommended for some unique foods with excellent service. There is a parking garage nearby if you cannot find nearby parking, but there is also a little parking lot behind the business as well. read more
My husband and I stopped in for our anniversary dinner during Devour. The menu looked good, but I also loved that there was a large patio seating area. We found convenient parking behind the restaurant and were seated fairly quickly when we arrived. Our server was great -- friendly, happy to provide good recommendations, and even offered to take our photo since it was a date night! The Devour menu included dessert and he put candles on our cakes too since we were celebrating. We enjoyed our hot pimento cheese dip app and, as our server suggested, the cheese was great on our fries too. The hot honey buttermilk chicken strips were hot and delicious and the hummingbird cake was AMAZING! I'm not a huge cake fan, but this one was delicious --my new fave! read more
I visited Juniper after a year and I was impressed with the vegetarian/egg options on the menu. Wilde our server was so nice and the flight of deviled eggs was such a fun experience! My salad with salmon and a chunks of pineapple added a tangy flavor to my salad. The place is busy at noons and although so busy servers get a spot up for you in no time. Right near Carmel downtown, you can walk around and check out the Carmel library, a variety of stores to shop and some amazing coffee, ice cream and bakeries too close by. A good spot to spend the entire day! You will not regret it! read more

We visited Juniper on Main for a birthday dinner recently. When we first arrived they did not have our reservation down that I had called about over a week before the reservation. However, they found a place for us to be seated and enjoy a meal as a family. The service here was okay but not what you would expect from a southern style restaurant. Everything felt rushed even though there were multiple open tables all around. The inside is decorated very cute and the outdoor seating is very nice! The menu is very large with lots of unique options offered. I would love to return and try some more items off their menu in the future. read more
I wasn't too fond of the food but the customer service was great. The fried green tomatoes and macaroni wasn't seasoned enough. It was pricey. The fries were perfect. They were well done and fresh. The restaurant was clean. I was the only one inside the restaurant. They offer outdoor seating as well. Had a delicious lunch celebrating a birthday today. We split the fried green tomatoes appetizer, it was very good. I ordered the Fried Chicken platter and it was delicious. I loved the greens that came with it. Definitely enough for two meals. My daughter ordered the shrimp and grits and loved it. We split the Hummingbird cake, it was absolutely delicious, I'd come just for this! The inside was cute and quaint decorated. Our server Allen was superb! Plenty of parking in the back. Joined some friends here for a girls night out! So this place is cute and cozy. My only dislike is that it is incredibly loud. We did go during Devour Indy, so they were pretty busy. In fact, the tried squeezing another table next to us but they ended up moving. It's difficult to carry a conversation with the person across from you. This might be the only acceptable time to text during dinner LOL. Aside from the noise level, everything else is awesome. The service is top tier. The food..chef's kiss. I tried the fried green tomatoes. They weren't bad. I also had the blackened catfish with okra and sweet potatoes. I loved how fresh the okra was. The catfish was so flavor. The sweet potato fries will be a forever repeat for me. They were my favorite out of all the things I've tried!! I would love to try this place again ...maybe not during Devour lol :) read more
Food is tasty and the staff and very friendly. Restaurant is beautiful inside and seating is separated by walls if you like a more private dining. They also have outdoor seating for those who enjoy that. Parking can be a little wanky. Bill is an excellent manager with great people skills. I got the salmon tacos and they were great! read more

Good food, decent service, awesome house drink! My sister and I stopped by for lunch and the patio was busy, even on a Friday afternoon. The decor was cute and the patio was nice. The most memorable part of this lunch was the Spodee-O-Dee. Who would have guessed that chilled Cabernet, lemon-lime soda, a splash of orange soda, and some ice would be so delicious? Not me for sure! This was the perfect summer drink for any red wine lover. The food had good flavor, but nothing compared to what I've had down in the Carolinas and Georgia. The tacos and some sandwiches could be made gluten-free, while both shrimp & grits options are already gluten-free. Our biggest pet peeve was the lack of "simple" options on the adult menu. My teenage sister tried to order a grilled cheese from the kids' menu but was told it wasn't allowed since she was over 12y/o. We understood since the prices are significantly different, but there weren't any comparable adult meals. She told me that the plain BBQ chicken sandwich she ordered was alright but nothing special, and definitely not the grilled cheese she had wanted. Unfortunately, the Short Rib & Pimiento Grilled Cheese, Pimiento & Tomato Grilled Cheese, and Glenna's Granny Smith Grilled Cheese sandwiches were a bit more complicated than she was willing to try. Such a pleasant place to eat. It seems to stay pretty busy, so be prepared to wait a minute for a table. But both indoor and outdoor seating are pleasant. Especially the outdoor seating on warmer days! The food is good if a bit over-billed for what it is. The waitstaff seem to be largely made up of Carmel HS students and other younger folk who can be a bit iffy on getting everything just right. But they're also friendly and easy to talk to. I don't think I'd go out of my way for Juniper. But if you're looking for somewhere pleasant for an easy meal in downtown Carmel, it's a solid choice. read more

I've been hesitant to try Juniper on Main since we once ordered it for takeout and didn't have a memorable experience. However, when we visited again recently, it was 11/10. The value for the amount of food we ate was unmatched and our server was friendly and had super helpful insights on menu items. He made it easy to identify what I could eat gluten-free and checked with the kitchen to be extra sure that everything would be okay. I also loved the quaint, house vibes of the restaurant. It's small inside and felt like we were eating with family. We will be back so soon! read more

Need a place to go out and have a great meal, great service and spend your money wisely? I've been to Juniper a bunch of times now, it's a goto when we have friends to meet in Carmel. It's consistent. It's delicious. The salads are huge and the Sangria is smacking. Just do it. lol. read more
