I had the buffet lunch ($14.50) at Golden Bowl with a couple of girlfriends and I can sum up my…read morefeelings in two words, or one emoticon: sad face :( The buffet was incredibly small, only about 10 items, and the food in my opinion was on par with the likes of Manchu Wok and other such food court Westernized Chinese food vendors. Actually, the best of the food was Manchu Wok caliber, some items did not even meet this low standard, at least not in my opinion. The place has been around for decades and it would appear to me that no renovations have been made for decades. On the buffet was: wonton soup, egg rolls, chicken balls, salt and pepper fried chicken pieces, garlic spare ribs, vegetarian fried noodles, chicken fried rice, beef and vegetables stir-fry, fried chicken wings, and chow mein. So only 10 "real items" then they had stuff like pineapple sauce, sweet and sour sauce, almond cookies, and some sort of deep-fried dough pieces. No ice cream! :( Let's start with the good: the chicken balls were filled with lean white breast meat and the meat to batter ratio was pretty good. They weren't all dough. They were crispy, and if one were to like sweet and sour chicken balls in general, I think that one would enjoy these. The egg rolls were also pretty good. They were very crispy and the wrapper was thinner and crunchier than I've had at other places. The filling was ground pork and vegetables and had a strong five-spice fragrance to it. The wonton soup was also not bad. I liked that the soup had some leafy greens in it and wasn't overly oily/greasy. The actual wontons were a bit mushy, but the filling to wrapper ratio was good. The flavour was good. The unremarkable: chicken fried rice, vegetarian noodles, beef and vegetables stir-fry, and garlic spare ribs. The bad: the salt and pepper fried chicken pieces I found very weird. The meat was dark meat and had a strange texture. It was too salty and not that peppery to me. The "I did not try it because it did not look appetizing to me": fried chicken wings (looked really dry and greyish), the chow mein (I hate bean sprouts), the almond cookies (looked store bought) and the crunchy fried dough things. Service was nice and efficient. We were greeted right away and led to our seats. We were given water shortly after and our waters were refilled often and without having to ask. When we first arrived a bit before noon, there were only a few patrons, but after 12pm the place got really busy, so it looks like there's definitely a market for this kind of food, it's just not my jam. There's free parking in their private parking lot beside the restaurant.

I got the Combination Plate #10 ($14.95) which comes with an egg roll, chicken fried rice, beef and broccoli and General Tao's Chicken. I also got the Lunch Special B ($9.95) which comes with an egg roll, chicken fried rice, 5 sweet and sour chicken balls, and a canned drink of your choice (I got root beer and it was A&W Root Beer). Note the Lunch Specials are only available 11am-2pm Mon-Sat (they are only open for dinner on Sundays). I walked in and ordered at the restaurant and waited there for it. It was ready in about 10 minutes. Service was courteous and efficient. It's a takeout only operation. I was impressed with the Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls. The batter was crispy on the outside and not excessive in relation to the meat. The meat was lean chicken breast and was moist and tender. My little niece loved it. She is a picky eater and eats very little but she ate 3 pieces! The egg rolls were pretty standard, with ground pork and vegetables. They were crispy. The chicken fried rice had tiny pieces of chicken breast in it as well as green onions and soy sauce. The beef and broccoli was more broccoli than beef, but the beef was tender and lean, and the broccoli was a good texture, not too mushy, but not too hard. It wasn't too salty. The General Tao Chicken was good. Like the Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls, the batter was not excessive in amount. It was crispy and there was good meat to batter ratio. The sauce wasn't tangy nor spicy though. It lacked that fiery kick, but was still enjoyable. There's free parking on site.

The hubby recently got takeout from Nom Nom a couple of weeks ago, and forgot how good it was, while it has been a couple of years since I've had takeout from here. We ordered the sesame balls, veggie spring rolls, sweet potato croquettes, tofu spicy fried noodles, and Singapore noodles. The sesame balls and the veggie spring rolls were reminiscent of the stuff you'd get at an AYCE restaurant, but they were still good. The sweet potato croquettes was a first for me, and they were very much like a large hash brown, but super fluffy inside. My suggestion is to wait for them to cool down a bit and eat them warm or room temperature. My toddler loved these, but I thought they were just OK. The Korean spicy fried noodles was the star of the show, although a bit too greasy for my liking, they did hit the spot. I really enjoyed their take on cooking tofu. I think they took deep fried puffed tofu, flattened it down and fried it with the noodles, where it resembled sliced pork. There was a lot of nice color to it, as well as a slight char, and the texture was amazing. Keep it mind, it was a tad greasy as well. I didn't care for the Singapore noodles. My hubby loves this dish, but said he's had it made better else where, so its all personal preference. I do like that you can customize a lot of the meals into vegetarian meals, so major kudos to that. I don't crave Asian cuisine all that often, so I don't think I will be rushing back, but it was nice to switch things up and try out something new.

The hubby and I frequent this location very often. Sometimes weekly. We usually go for the veggie pad thai-no meat-with tofu. It is seriously hands down the best pad thai that we have had in the city! Do not expect ketchupy pad thai sauce here!!! I do not know how they do it, but their pad thai sauce is perfect! Not too sweet, not too spicy! I usually take it to go, and top it with tons of peanuts at their stand right after its made. The only comment is that I wish they had fresh lime wedges instead of lime in a bottle. Portions are generous, and the prices cannot be beat! This is a family owned business. The service is always friendly, and the cook/owner usually sings while hes making our pad thai! Love it!

Here's how I like my Pad Thai: Hot, Spicy, Not Sweet, Fresh China Thai does this for $7.52 plus taxes versus like $15-20 at a normal restaurant. I've been going to China Thai (since March 2016) and his previous restaurant Thai Go (At Westgate, link to Thai Go: https://www.yelp.ca/biz/thai-go-ottawa) for the last few years. In early 2016, he sold his Thai Go at Westgate and opened up China Thai at the Gloucester Center. The reason for the move? They will be demolishing Thai Go and Westgate next year, so he wanted to get out. This is street food, really the closest best Thai/China that we have. You can go to Thai Express, but there's always something off about it. Everything is measured to some franchise code, I want it real. I want it, I'm grabbing a bowl of this, and I don't measure anything. Also every time I come by, the owner is like, "Hey, great to see you. Pad Thai, Tofu, Medium Spicy". He actually remembered my order. This is the closest thing we have to Cheers, in a Thai restaurant. If you're looking for great Thai and bottom rock prices, drop by. I know he will be glad to have you, as I'm probably going here at least once every 2 weeks. Here's what I recommend, but have what you want: 1. Pad Thai - pretty much a stable - be a local and get it medium spicy 2. Pad See Ew - This is actually my favorite, I like it more than Pad Thai. Again get it medium spicy. 3. Singapore Noodles - I get this one with tofu, but yet again amazing - you guessed it medium spicy. 4. Tom Yum Soup - If you're in the mood for soup, this is one of the most declious soups ever - nice mix of spicy and sour. Delicious - again medium spicy. Anyone who says this place is not amazing - they need to go back to Montana's or East Side Mario's or any of the other "bland" franchises. Live a little and eat here, you taste buds will thank you.
