I spent over a year and a half at Jukebox going 5+ times a week. I participated in almost every extracurricular-outdoor classes, social events, and spar club/fight night. I felt like I was a staple member of the Jukebox community, and I think many others would agree. Take a scroll through the gym's instagram, and you can find my mug scattered across it. That said, I was unceremoniously pushed out of the gym. It was very hurtful to feel cast out from a community I cared deeply about and actively supported. I do feel this was a targeted, personal effort by the owner Carrie. As a result of my exit, as well as some other reasons, I cannot comfortably recommend Jukebox. Pros: Programming is great Cons: Pricing (see below) Carrie's behavior (also see below) Gym is very small No changing area--your stuff will sit at the door Curiously there are lockers, but members can't use them There is one bathroom, no shower Bags and equipment break frequently, and can take a while to repair Booking system Zenplanner is a mess Classes frequently run over time Amenities of the facility don't match the cost Membership information is intentionally obfuscated. Members are paying different amounts for the same membership too. So here you go. In September 2022, the membership was roughly (without tax): $224/mo for 8 first floor classes $299/mo for 12 first floor classes $399/mo for unlimited first floor classes $40 for a drop-in class In March 2024, I received an email with pricing changes: $279/mo for 8 first floor classes (+$55/mo or a ~25% increase) $349/mo for 12 first floor classes (+$50/mo or a ~14% increase) REMOVED: Unlimited first floor classes $599/mo for unlimited *both floor* classes (+$200/mo or ~33% increase over unlimited first floor) These changes are what pushed me out. There's a photo of the email on this review. Contrast this email with the other email photo in which she told me I was "invaluable." None of that mattered when Carrie decided she was done with me. The reason given was "membership changes" that eliminated my tier of membership, but I am certain she just didn't like that I am friends with some former members and some former coaches. She believed that I was (and I heard this from several folks): "using my membership to steal members from her gym for former coaches." To play that back: she believes I was paying her $400/mo to...funnel money to someone else. This was during spar club-a program with an additional cost of $650. The mental gymnastics required to paint me as some kind of thief in this situation are olympic level. The email came while I was away, too. True courage from the woman who "always carries around a mouthguard just in case." Then there's some other questionable behavior. Carrie often gossips on members, commenting on their jobs or their lives. She has a particular hatred for one member's wife--she would repeatedly trash talk their marriage, even though this member volunteers regularly to help the gym. I regret ever sharing anything personal with her. I've seen her fly into a rage at members. She would scream publicly at them, embarrassing them. She's flown into these fits for such crimes as: wearing another gym's tee to class, using handwrap gloves instead of handwraps, and the war crime of not wiping your shoes enough. One of the more troubling things to me personally was how she treated me as a gay man. I felt tokenized. In class, she would tell me how cute I was and say I was "the hottest guy at the gym," and had to keep posting "my handsome face" on the gym's instagram. She teased me for talking to someone she perceived as attractive, as if there were no other reasons to talk to this person. This behavior flies in direct contrast to the inclusive space that "the only women-owned boxing gym in the city" purports to be. To be exceedingly clear: I have only felt discomfort in classes taught by Carrie. A business practice that I found troubling was that payments for extracurricular programs didn't go to the gym. Some of those went through her personal business Underwraps, LLC. I don't know what the level of legal entanglement with Jukebox and Underwraps is (if at all), but I was not comfortable sending the $650 for spar club-which took place exclusively at Jukebox-to Underwraps directly. Given her behavior, I knew the day would come where something I could not have possibly perceived to have been an infraction would be the final straw. I didn't expect having friends would be the reason. I shouldn't have to justify my friendships to anyone--let alone to a place where I go to sweat and to punch. I think she is jealous that members of her community hang out without her. She could easily feel a sense of pride for fostering this community. She could reward the people who support her. Instead she boxes with shadows. If you're looking for a gym with no emotional stakes at a quarter of price, look two blocks in any direction.

There are so many good things I want to say about Jukebox but it wouldn't fit in one review. Carrie and her team are the most caring and supportive people I've ever met and the energy and enthusiasm never falters. The sense of community is so evident and welcoming that no matter how tired or sad or angry you feel before coming to class, I can guarantee a complete shift in your mood when leaving. Don't get me wrong, the classes are challenging but the team constantly makes sure you're OK, working around any injuries you may have while making it the most fun experience possible. Whether you want technique or cardio or both - there's a coach for all of it. COULD NOT RECOMMEND MORE - 100000 STARS LOVE YOU.

The environment is friendly and the place is well maintained. While most gyms smell like feet and sweat, This place actually smells nice! They do not pressure you in buying or joining anything. They are not flashy, not glamourous probably because their main clienteles are not celebrities or models. This feels like a true martial arts academy. That being said, I always get a good workout and learn something every time I come to class. Most importantly, this place feels welcoming for women! So many MMA gyms in NYC try to be intimidating and scare you into thinking you need to train like a pro athlete every day to be good. Some places even humiliates female students that show up a bit timid. I understand the tough love mentality but with MMA being such a testosterone-filled sport already, there is no need to push further. When you create the right kind of environment, people will want to train with you. They are also very flexible with memberships. I travel all over different places and can only join them one or twice per month. They were happy offer something that is perfect for my schedule. I highly recommend MAUSA. Try their kickboxing or Muay Thai. They are AWESOME. Haven't tried the yoga class here but am looking forward to finding out.

Hit House really pushed and challenged us - it was a really cool experience to try out their unique Bishop punching bags. A great workout and I loved how I didn't feel like I was pressured to buy more and buy a membership after our class. Tip: if you do the kickboxing & flow class (yoga) grab a towel so you aren't slipping on the fitness mat for the yoga portion of the class.
