I've been training jiu jitsu for almost 5 years and have done my fair share of drop ins at academies/gyms all over. This is one of my favorite places to go outside of my "home" academy. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming and you'll find people with varying degrees of experience on the mats. Additionally, when it comes to training there are places where the cleanliness and hygiene seems to be questionable, this is NOT one of them. You can see the mats, and walls being sanitized daily, and bonus there's a shower available so you don't have to go home smelling like you just spent over an hour trying to simulate murders. lol I definitely recommend this place. read more

Great affordable school with many pricing options. I've taken classes at multiple MMA/Martial Art schools, and this is one of the best, if not the best schools that i have been to. While your average MMA school will teach you the typical 1-2-3 kick combo, the instructors really emphasize movement and angles. Which is something I haven't seen taught at Martial Arts Schools. read more

Love this this gym. The coaches are really cool, knowledgeable, and encourage a unique sense of community. I doubt many other gyms give people as much individual attention. All of the different classes are MMA oriented, which is useful because in BJJ it's easy to forget that punching exists. Wrestling is my favorite! read more

I've been training with Jaime and Humberto Perea since 2015. I knew absolutely nothing about any of the Mixed Martial Arts classes and techniques. They both helped me so much along the way. I'm proud to say that these two have helped so many people like me in their own MMA journeys - from the beginner to the more experienced fighter. No matter where we have trained together, a group of peers would gravitate towards the Perea's for extra help during classes and open mats. It only makes sense that they have their own gym to teach and help more students. One of the few gyms in NYC that does a great job of mixing all the elements of MMA into one gym. They offer Muay Thai, BJJ, wrestling and many other classes! Love this school. The coaches just opened up after years of talking about it, and you can tell they are passionate about MMA and running a school where you receive great instruction in a fun and welcoming environment. Berto and Jaime are excellent instructors - they will tailor techniques and style based on an individual's skill level and needs, making it an excellent school for anyone from fighters to people walking in with no experience at all. They provide classes in striking (think kickboxing or Muay Thai), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA (mixing those two), and also offer a great wrestling for MMA class that should be required for anyone that wants to improve their take downs. Been here a few times, twice for bjj and once for striking. Love how sweet everyone is there, and the classes are super affordable. They take their time to work with each person individually and highlight your strengths. I get a boost of confidence each time i get to take a class. I've been going to this gym for about a year now and have had nothing but a wonderful time here. The gym is very clean, the instructors are very attentive, amazing positive energy, encouraging, supportive, nurturing, kind, respectful, and is a very beginner friendly gym. Visitors are also more than welcome to come by of any level whenever they like. Berto and Jaime are hilarious so you'll get a good laugh during every class mixed in with serious focus and drilling. Literally anyone fits in and is welcomed here. Most importantly, (and a huge plus) Chop&Chops is a very safe and open space for the LGBTQIA+ community, women, non binary people, and all backgrounds. And of course, this is a great activity to do if you want to get in shape! read more
