Anwar is the absolute GOAT and makes the workouts fun and go by quickly. He's just a ball of energy and is very serious about form. I've taken a few of Nicole's classes and they're also awesome. I haven't tried the other instructors. Class is always full which shows you how good it is and everyone is there for a fun, intense and no frills workout. I'm so excited I found this place! I tried it through ClassPass since it was convenient, reasonably priced and had great reviews. The instructors here are energetic and friendly and will warmly push you. If you've had little to no gym experience, you might have a little trouble just dropping in but will eventually catch up. Sometimes instructors will only use the name of a movement without breaking it down, so I have to wait to watch others in the class until I figure out what the move is. Fortunately, you can just flag down the instructor and they can break down a move for you or correct your form. As someone who often feels insecure at the gym, I always leave these classes feeling accomplished and proud of myself. I was visiting Brooklyn for a week and wanted to try a fitness class there so booked a class at Tabata through ClassPass! Ended up liking it so much I booked more classes here during my stay. Probably one of my favorite fitness studios I've been to. The energy is contagious, instructors are super motivating and encouraging, and the workouts are challenging but fun. At the end of the month, there's a HIIT Xtreme class led by three different instructors - super tough workout but my favorite one I did here. Everyone is also super nice! There seems to be a stronger community feel here than other studios I've been to (also not a pretentious vibe at all). read more

There's no burn like the burn you get from a H.I.I.T Lab class at Tabata. The instructors here are relentless as they push class goers to go for that extra rep, to fight through the pain. Everyone around me had the same expression of agony on their faces as I had and it made it feel like we were really going through something together. I think it's funny that they blast the music during really excruciating exercises to drown out the groans coming from pretty much everyone in class. This new studio is a wonderful upgrade from the last. There's an actual waiting area to avoid a pileup at the door before class. There are now two bathrooms, and there's generally more space in the room to move around and avoid kicking your neighbor in the face. Great pricing on their classes and I'm often able to catch a low credit class through ClassPass. read more

Used my class pass to come here post COVID. First about the class 50/10 HIIT: I was sore the next day but it was so worth it!! The instructor is awesome and I would come back for this class. Safety measures: book class online, 6 feet distance amongst other members. When I went there were anyways few of us so we were all distanced pretty well. You are on your own circuit and use those equipments and at the end wipe down. read more

I discovered this gem of a studio through ClassPass and it is by far the best gym I've been to in the Brooklyn area. It's quite massive and stocked with a variety of equipment. First of all, I walked in with zero experience. I typically take spin class 4x a week, but don't have any experience with weights or HIIT based training. Even with a lot of cycling experience, I find the classes challenging! Anwar, a trainer who is a Navy vet, provides individual attention so that I have correct posture. He's very energetic and dances around, even at 7AM. The classes vary, but I found HIIT camp to be the most challenging. I almost gave up and walked out as it was too intense for beginner level and quick paced. I loved HIIT Weights and I've heard that HIIT Structure is great too. I've only been here two times, but I've been very impressed with this gym. Not only are the instructors motivating, but they also create workouts that are equal parts smart and hard. Some trainers at other gyms I've been to seem to design workouts solely to maximize difficulty; at TUF, however, I could sense that the instructors strategically organize the exercises. Every class I take I always leave feeling like I got an amazing workout. Classes are structured and scalable so good for whatever level of fitness you're at but you're also really pushed to your limits by the instructors. It's a friendly, non-intimidating place with a lot of regulars and the owner remembers everyone's names and has a knack for well timed affirmations or tough love to keep you going (usually when you're laying face down on the floor not sure if you can make your arms do one more push up). I think classes are particularly good if you're looking to build strength and endurance as well as cross training for other sports. Most classes also pack in all the major muscle groups with a good dose of cardio in 60 minutes so if you're busy and looking for an efficient workout this place certainly does it. I also don't like lifting weights at the gym so having a strength building class with knowledgable instructors around to correct your form is helpful for those that either don't like lifting or are worried about getting injured. Overall, the great workout combine with the great instructors that really care about what they do make this one of my favorite places to work out so that even after I moved out of the neighborhood I still go. read more

I found this class last March through ClassPass and have been coming since. If you are looking for a kick your butt work out where you see the results, totally recommend. The work out is always tough (in a good way) and never gets easy and really pushes you. It's also really inexpensive compared to other gyms and given how good the workout is. The instructors are all great. They are really good at giving one on one feedback to both encourage you and push you. The classes are also not super large so you can't hide either. The music is pretty good too--that matters when you are busting your butt in a workout. When I started I was doing this, yoga and Soul cycle and at this point I'm just sticking with this class and team. Definitely recommend but also kinda of want it to stay my secret too! read more

Thanks to Anwar's workout plan, I'm the envy of all my friends. But seriously, these workouts are the best. Walked in on a whim via Classpass, ended up cancelling my Classpass and taking up an unlimited plan at this gym. The workouts are exhausting, varied, and if you stick with it, the progress you make is dramatic. I've been at the gym for four months and am stronger than I've been at any point in my life, after working out regularly for the last four years. Never before had I taken a class that was such a perfect combination of - Serious, challenging workout no matter your level of #fitness - Highly involved trainers with consistent individualized advice - Amazing, chill community of "regulars" and newbies with no pretentious vibes - Ridiculously affordable cost, considering the level of personalization everyone receives Mike, Anwar, and Jordan are experts who know what they're doing more than the instructors at most classes I've tried. The busier weekend classes typically have at least two trainers present so that you're not lost in the crowd of people with little to no attention given to you. Because there are more eyes on everyone, I was corrected on things I have been doing wrong for years. I also was given modifications to fit injuries as needed. The music is great, the workouts (and class types) are mixed so some days you'll have a bit more cardio and others you may do a bit more weights (but most of the time you're stuck with both!) The results I have seen over the last year of coming here (2-3 times a week AT MOST) were surprising to me: I'm not killing myself trying to get into shape, but it's such a fun class you don't even notice your body is changing until it has. This is by far the best workout I've done, and I will keep coming back for more! Love this gym! Suitable for all fitness levels, if you are a beginner you can do all of the exercises just with lighter weights or they modify for you. For advanced people they still get a great workout with heavier weights and extra movements. I'm new to Brooklyn and have been hesitant to workout at a gym due to COVID. But my friend has been coming to TUF for awhile and recommended I come with her especially since it is so close to my apartment. I am SO glad I joined her! I have always been a fan of HIIT and TUF hasn't let me down. I haven't been into the gym yet, but had such a great conversation with Mike this morning that I thought it warranted a shout out. I will be in tomorrow for my first workout. Im pretty far on the cautious end of the covid isolation spectrum and haven't been able to get my head around being in a high touch/ high sweat public environment. BUT .....I've had a tough time keeping up my fitness regime on my own. I've looked into ALL of the gyms in the crown heights area (and even surrounding) to find something both comfortable and affordable. The chain gyms while still following safety protocols were just too crowded and left sanitization of equipment between usage up to individuals without any protocol or oversight in place. Smaller boutique gyms, while much better equipped to control the number of guests and sanitization, are just outside of my price range. Both want contracts and enrollment fees. And then came Mike who said that the main focus of the gym right now was to "help people feel more comfortable about working out inside again". Everyone has their own equipment for classes that they make sure to sanitize between sessions, the require masks, gloves, health screenings and temperature checks EVERY time you work out and Mike told me that he also has a dedicated area close to the door for people that might still feel nervous so they can have fresh air. The thoughtfulness of this final point is what won me over. All of the physical logistics aside, there is zero financial commitment beyond paying for the day you use the space. This was also a huge win for me as my income is fluctuating right now. I can come when I can and won't be charged or penalized in any way when I can't. Workouts here are consistently challenging, focused, high energy, and rewarding. I stay in shape and don't even go that often. The owner and all the trainers have a good time and take their work seriously. They want to be there, and want to help you be healthy. The trainers have a high level of expertise and pay attention to form so people don't get injured. A scene from a doctor's office last year: DR. M (checking my pulse): "Do you run marathons?" ME: "Umm ... no." DR. M: "You have the heart rate of a marathoner." This is a true story. Despite never being a serious athlete, I fooled my doctor into believing I was a long-distance runner. The reason is simple: Tabata Ultimate Fitness, a high-intensity interval training class founded by Mike Montanez. For the past four years - since he ran overflow classes at Harbor Fitness - I've been training with Mike. He's since moved three times into now-more permanent digs on Bergen St. above the Prospect Heights Cross Hit. Where Mike goes, I follow. Tabata has several different types of workouts: a weight-heavy class, a body-weight class, kickboxing, one with just bands. The common thread though is they're all designed to get the heart pumping, cut fat and build muscle. Imagine short bursts of intense activity punctuated by little rest: 50 seconds of burpees followed by 50 seconds of push ups followed by 50 seconds of mountain climbers, punctuated with 10 second breaks, repeated 4 times. A few other things to know: 1. All the instructors - Mike, Anwar, Jordie - are great teachers. They'll model what to do and what not to do. They'll give you feedback about your technique, and they'll differentiate for veterans and novices. 2. There's a wonderful community at Tabata where you see the same faces. The people are really nice and the feel is very inclusive. 3. Weekends are very packed and always sell out so be sure to sign up early in the week. I've been coming to this down-to-earth gym for a few years. I usually take the 50/10 circuit class, which is an awesome whole-body workout. I'd never been able to develop defined abs before I started weight training, and now I have a few abs! Anwar is HILARIOUS and clearly loves what he does. Since I've been coming for a while, he'll push me with individualized feedback to make sure I'm using proper form and challenging weight. He and the other trainers also give modifications for beginners, so nobody gets overwhelmed or injured. read more
