Judy's has been around a long time. That should say something. I had the country fried steak eggs and fries with rye toast and my own pot of coffee. Judy's walls are covered with family photos. We had to be in Otsego early this morning, and after we finished what we were doing, we realized we were really hungry. Not knowing the area, we asked Siri if there were any good breakfast places nearby. Judy's was at the top of the list, and we were a block down the street. I drove up, saw the front parking spot open, and took it as a good sign. So glad! THIS is an American diner! The decor could be called "kitschy," but it really feels like I just walked into someone's grandma's house, in the best way. Family photos (probably friends, too) are everywhere. The warmth. As for the food, I'm running out of room. I'll just say that I ordered the mini & couldn't quite finish it (yes the bacon is fantastic, btw). Then I saw a guy getting a burger delivered at 8:30ish, and darned if I didn't wish I'd ordered a burger for breakfast! Hats off to that guy, and that burger! Now. The service. See, when everyone who enters the door is treated like they're already friends and could be family, it's hard to find anything better than that. Four people were circulating in the dining room and every one of them stopped to ask us questions about our day, our food...you know: conversation. These folks are so grand. read more

Ok, first of all, Judy is real and she was our hostess last Saturday. I saw several people come in and greet Judy...one little boy ran up to her and told her they were having a party that night (it was New Year's Eve). So, it's a local charmer for sure. There are photographs everywhere and you do sort of feel like you're over at Judy's having a meal. The waitstaff are friendly, the menu has plenty of options and I had an awesome breakfast. So Judys is the "classic diner" style food restaurant. Its always good tasting and well done food. Their omelettes are incredible. If you want good but "frills free" food,Judys is the place. My favorite foods here are as follows: omelettes,Grilled fluffed ham and cheese on Texas toast(my favorite),the Rueben sandwich and their burgers are great too. This is a family owned business and one of few these days. Sometimes i like my corporate restaurants but more often i like simple delicious dressed down food (like what your Grandmother or Aunt used to make). Cute little small town diner where the food is hot and fresh and waitstaff is accommodating and friendly. I've met people here for breakfast a few times and we always get great service. The food is decent, and so are the prices, but the owner Judy is a real battle axe. Most of the staff is great, friendly and accommodating, but then there's Judy. Wish i could give it no stars. My mother (79 years young in 2 weeks) and her siblings (5 others, ages 75 to 95) like to meet on the last Saturday of every month for 'family breakfast'. Usually more family comes too. We'll usually have anywhere from 12-20 people. We call ahead and let them know every time. Before, during & after breakfast, there is a lot of chatter among everyone, and the breakfast has never lasted more than 2 hours, but is safe to say it hovers around 1.5 hours. After the food has been eaten, Judy will start to clean the tables (-1 star for being utterly rude), then will bring the register over to the table to cash people out (-1 star again for being rude). Even though she never excused herself for her inappropriateness, I apologized to her and said I understand she probably has people waiting for tables. When we go to leave, there is no one waiting for tables (-1 star for just pushing us out for no reason). After that, I was convinced Judy didn't like us, but we continued to meet and eat there for almost a year, until October she straight up said, don't come back (-1 star for turning away customers). Well Judy, no worries, we won't, we will now be meeting at Our Table Family Restaurant in Ostego, their food there is amazing, so is their prices and the staff! Eat there instead. read more

From the looks just a basic diner, but from within its so much more than that. The staff were all great and gave you that small town feel. I had business in Allegan and stopped here for breakfast on my way to Kalamazoo because I like to support local businesses and this looked cozy. The breakfast (1 pancake, 2 eggs and bacon) was good. The service was fine. But you have to enjoy eating your meal with multiple TVs all tuned to FOX News. I will say that upon request (and since I was in a section with few people and no one watching the TVs), the waitress was very gracious in turning down the set that was right above my head. Decent local joint. Expect most of the items to be frozen or prepared, not fresh. I usually eat blueberry pancakes because they are fresh. Omelets are okay but they use sliced individually wrapped cheese in them. If you get an omelet order it with cheddar cheese, and it will be shredded! The pies are homemade and really good! And the salad bar is great because everything is really really cold which I love! They also have good burgers which are fresh patties. My first and final visit to Judy's occurred last weekend. I had been driving for the better part of the day and decided to stop at what seemed to be a cozy little restaurant next to an antique shop. Upon entering I was immediately greeted by a shrine of photographs covering the walls. I found this a little odd but decided to wait until my food came to form any permanent opinion of the place. I was seated by a waitress who stopped twice during our entire visit. My drink of choice for the evening was mountain dew which I found to be extremely watery, so much so I went through dinner with nothing to drink. When it came time to order I choose the New York strip steak. I asked for a medium steak. For my side I choose mashed potatoes and gravy. When my food came I found the steak to be grey and not by any means what I had expected or paid for ($10.95). The mashed potatoes were cold and the gravy was slightly warm. In my opinion, the most outrageous part of the place is the salad bar. Patrons are charged $4.50 PER trip, at least according to the menu I was given. Needless to say I could have gotten a better and fresher salad at McDonald's. Although I and my stomach were thoroughly disappointed by the food and service, the place had a nice atmosphere, which was very small town family oriented. Staff were friendly the few times the made themselves present. Overall I would recommend the place for someone who wants a simple dinner, but there are many improvements that need to be made before I'd give it five stars. read more

Not impressed. If you order just plain eggs, toast, sausage and American fries or pancakes you will be okay. Nothing special. But don't order a steak breakfast. They do not know the difference between medium rare, medium and well done. Hubby cut into his steak which was supposed to be medium rare and it was well done only the very center of this 12 of steak was pink. We show the waitress and she took it back. Some older lady came back out with the steak. It had been cut almost in half at the center and was more medium than medium rare. She explained to us that a steak cannot be cooked the same throughout and this was fine. So basically my hubby was not happy and she just kept on until he said fine. So think about this. The steak went back to the kitchen, they cut it in the center, they bring it back out and show it to us, hubby just gives in, the older woman walks around the dining room with the steak to talk to the waitress then goes back to the kitchen puts it on a new plate with eggs and brings it back out to him. SERIOUSLY? How many people touched the steak and how sanitary was that to see your steak roaming the building. Well they do not have to worry about us coming back. If you decide to eat here I hope you have a better experience. read more

After reading a review of this place, I came here just to experience Judy. She was not here today, lol. Anyway, I had a cup of broccoli cheddar soup and the queen bacon cheeseburger. The soup was thick, you could stand your spoon in it! It was the cheeseburger that really made this stop totally worth it. It was a full 1/3 # of freshly made burger, cooked to perfection medium rare. My husband had the veg/beef soup and the hot turkey sandwich. He says both were terrific. I would add that they accommodated him well with his choice of no bread. They mounded mashed potatoes loaded with flavorful gravey over a healthy portion of fresh turkey. Very friendly waitress who served us well. The bill was about $20 before tip. Can hardly get fast food for that. read more

If this place was in a city I would give it 4 out of 5 stars, but considering its location, definitely 5 out of 5. There are quite a few menu options available (including breakfast) and they also have some really cheap lunch specials. The service and food quality were both good.
