I recently visited Ted & Marie's Colonial Inn Restaurant in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The ambiance was that of a classic diner, and the restaurant was clean and well-maintained. My server was very nice and efficient, taking my order promptly. I opted for the Colonial Club, a ham club sandwich, with a side of fries. The sandwich was delicious, especially the ham. The crinkle-cut fries were also a hit. Overall, the food was good and reasonably priced. However, I did find the menu to be somewhat limited, lacking some diner staples like open-faced sandwiches. The food was amazing, didn't wait long at all after ordering. Service was great, we had someone check on coffee twice before we'd even placed our order (and she came back several times while we were eating to glance at the mugs). It's a nice, quiet little restaurant. Perfect for when you're just waking up and need a bite to eat without breaking the bank. Our family's favorite breakfast place! Service is pleasant and fast, food comes out quick no matter how busy they are, and coffee is always filled to the brim! This reminds us so much of the classic diners we frequented as kids, and if you're into the classics this is the spot for you. My husband and I nearly always get either an omelette (any of them, seriously they are all good), or 2 eggs, toast, hash browns, and we'll split a full order of corn beef hash. This is a no frills place that serves up your breakfast basics at prices that are unbeatable. My 4 stars are based on fast friendly service and quality of food. Waitress was more than happy to accommodate my request for half decaf half reg coffee (I know, I know ..... could I be more particular ). I was disappointed bc they didn't have fruit on breakfast menu. I will say they have really good thick cut raisin toast. Our bill without tip was ~$14.50 for coffee, 2 toasts & 2 eggs for each us, along with potatoes for each and hubs got sausage too. This used to be our favorite breakfast place. However, our last visit was a disaster and we walked out, never to return. After we took a booth we waited, and waited, and waited. Two other parties came in after us. A waitress brought them menus and coffee. And we waited while our waiter chatted with other customers, returned to the kitchen to chat with the cook. In the meantime, the two tables that came in after us were served and we sat waiting for our waiter, who still chatted without someone in the kitchen. We won't be back. Sorry. read more

Great local diner. Marie is the star keeps it going. Best server is Carol, very attentive. The menu has great basic breakfast and lunch comfort food. The best is their home made soups great for winter days. Split Pea soup is better than Pea Soup Anderson's. Unpretentious and that's the way I like it. Lots of regulars, like me. read more

It can look a little intimidating as it is obvious that the place is mostly frequented by regulars and it is cash only.. but please give it a try! The service was great and the price of the food is more than reasonable. The biggest draw should be their perfect hash browns though. Seriously, I don't think that I've had better hash browns anywhere else. Ted & Marie's has been here forever. It looks very plain on the outside and it is not much different inside, but it is worth looking for. It is in the Harding's parking lot, but there is a stop light on Michigan Avenue to help make it very easy to turn in and park. This is a breakfast and lunch place only, but all the locals know the place. It could not have been in business this long if they were not doing things right. It is very clean, there is seating for 2-4 people around the outside walls and communal seating in the middle where you can sit and be social with many people if that is your choice. Marie still works there every day. She is in her 80's and you can tell this is her baby. She will circulate to the tables from time-to-time to make sure you had a good meal. It is just plain comfort food done well. If you are in the area it is worth stopping for a good meal at a good price. They do close daily at 3:00. Keep that in mind. read more

I am writing this review while sitting in a booth at LaRue's family restaurant right across the street. My girlfriend and I went in to Ted & Marie's for breakfast and as we were greeted by a sweet older lady who said she would be right with us. She went back into the kitchen and was berated by another worker who appeared to be her son. We were shocked at this public humiliation of not only an employee but a family member. It carried on for awhile and we got up and left. We did not have the food, but we were not going to stay for any more of that. I do hope that the lady can find somewhere else to work where she is appreciated and not verbally abused by her son/boss. Go to LaRue's! read more

This place reminds me of the opening of beauty and the beast, don't be deceived by appearances. The patrons upon entry were quite the motley crew. A family, a business man, seniors, so obviously it caters to a diverse group of people. As I said before, the decor is dated, the carpet is ugly, but I have gone to beautiful restaurants and been very disappointed, I was pleasantly surprised here. Be aware this is a cash only establishment (that was a close one, fortunately I went with someone with cash and I didn't have to feel guilty because the food was very moderately priced). Our server misunderstood what I ordered, but let me keep an upgraded omelet vs two eggs and bacon for the same price. I'm assuming it was Marie who said my son was gorgeous, major points there. The patrons entertained my son, and that alone is worth the price of admission. My mom had the corned beef sandwich and my son opted for just French fries. Our bill topped out at $11.45 so I honestly can't complain there! Fun, quirky, hole in the wall, but that is what makes this place absolutely charming. read more

Love this place. It's a place where seniors frequent and everyone seems to know everyone and says their hellos as they come in. You would think my friend and I (early 30's but don't look as mature) would stick out like sore thumbs and feel out of place, but quite the contrary. We really enjoyed ourselves here and were able just to relax and enjoy a down home meal. We came a little too early for lunch, but they kindly offered to make it for us anyways; they just wouldn't be able to make anything deep fried yet as the fryers weren't ready. Happily we ordered a grilled ham & cheese and a grilled tuna salad & cheese, both with grilled American fries which were so good & buttery...mmm... We also ordered a blueberry pancake to try, which was good. But let me tell you, those grilled sandwiches were so delicious! Just the perfect amount of buttery crispness to the bread, that melty cheese and salty ham (on mine) - perfect comfort food! So good in fact, as we were finishing off our meal...I am embarrassed to say....we both ordered another round of sandwiches and shared an order of french fries! A horrendous amount of calories I'm sure, but it was so worth it! (But in our defense, the sandwiches were on the smaller side ;) Service was also friendly and prompt. The people were nice, good food, low prices.. But gave me gastroenteritis. Was fine before i ate here, went immediately home and to bed, didnt eat anything that would have caused it at home. Diarrhea twice that night and vomiting every hour after midnight. Boyfriend said when he used the bathroom they didnt have any soap.. So likely poor hygiene. read more

Great local joint. Was rated 5 stars and a local place so I had to go. Family wasn't sold on it as you pull up it's not much to look at but we went in.
