I'm so thankful that I found Johnny. I've been having progressive left glut/hip pain for 2 years now. The problem starting as an annoyance, but slowly increased in severity to the point that I had daily pain for 90% of the day. I could barely sit still and was not able to find a comfortable position. Standing used to help, but even that stopped relieving the pain. I started getting numbness and tingling in my legs and toes. I've been training with Johnny about once a week since January. I initially came to him because I wanted to learn how to work out properly as well as strengthen my body due to various sports injuries. When I first spoke to Johnny on the phone to see if he could help me out, I remember telling him that my goals were simple: that I just wanted to move and exist without pain. I grew up not particularly physically active, and walked around with terrible posture. Fast forward about a decade and much of my adult life now revolves around sitting at a desk working on a computer (I'm a software engineer). For the past ~5 years, I've started to notice a steady increase in upper back pain from just sitting and walking around. We're talking about two very simple activities that I knew should not be causing me as much pain as it was at the age of 26. A few months ago, I went to Johnny to fix some of my muscular imbalances and alignment issues that resulted from years of poor posture and daily weight lifting. Over the course of the next few visits, Johnny helped me improve my shoulder stability and mobility, core activation, and applied everything he taught me to what I said was important to me: core barbell lifts. Although I am a personal trainer and know more about the human body than the average guy, I have learned to become a better lifter every time I visited Johnny. He is extremely knowledgeable and I refer all my clients to him whenever they have a nagging pain or discomfort. Some aspects that make Johnny stand out from other therapists I've visited in the past: 1. He does NOT push you to buy more sessions. He tries to alleviate your problem in as few sessions as possible and does not pressure you to make multiple unnecessary appointments. Yet his schedule is still booked! I have been active in sports for as long as I can remember. As a given, I have had my fair share of injuries and doctor visits. I also work 50-60+ hours a week... at a desk. Anyone who sits at a desk for hours, it affects everything, down to your fingertips. A few months ago, I ended up getting tennis AND golfer's elbow in the same arm (non-sports and non-work related). Working with Johnny, even in the short time since I very fortunately found him on Yelp, has been nothing short of fantastic. If it weren't enough that he immediately put an end to the incessant pain in my shoulder and rib cage that plagued me for 2 months- in just one consultation, he also pinpointed the many ways in which parts of my body weren't working together that I never would have realized. Since then, he has thoroughly taught me how to retrain myself into working order and given me simple, effective tools to help deal with tension when he's not there to work his magic (wait, I can't just have people at my beck and call every time I have an ache? I was working out on my own for about 6 months prior to working with Johnny. I was extremely frustrated because I was not seeing the results I wanted. I was losing a little bit of weight, but I was not toning up even though I was lifting weights. I've been working out with him for about 3 months now and I've lost 12 lbs and have gained muscle. I am doing some of the same exercises I did on my own, but I now see that I was doing them the wrong way. He is very patient and explains each exercise to you. Johnny is awesome! I had chronic hip pain for almost an entire year before I finally found him, and within 3 weeks it was GONE and has stayed gone for almost a month so far now. I hadn't had more than a few days of no pain for months so this is incredible! He does a lot to make you feel better immediately during the session, but then he also teaches you how to help yourself at home and build up your muscles so that the pain stays gone for good. I found Johnny because of Yelp, so it was only fitting that I added a review of my own. I have been an athlete for years and could never reach my full potential because of coordination issues that would limit my performance past a certain point. After a few months of driving myself insane trying to correct my own movement patterns without any formal guidance, I found Johnny. Johnny is an expert in kinesiology, neuromuscular therapy, and active release techniques. As soon as I walked in the door for our first session, he was able to detect all of my muscular imbalances and small postural distortions with a quick assessment. Since them, he has been helping me learn to activate the correct muscles involved in strength training. The mind-muscle connection comes natural to some, but can be very hard to achieve for others. Exhaustive training can exacerbate this condition when hypertonic muscles begin to take over, causing you to forget how to use the correct muscles for movement and training, or in other words, the right tool for the job. People perpetually drop money on chiropractic adjustments only to develop a dependency while never correcting the root of the problem. If you have a misalignment or pain problem, Johnny works with you to correct the imbalances that are causing them to persist. I was extremely skeptical before I decided to visit a professional for the first time, because I didn't want to have to spend a bunch of money going through introductory assessments with different trainees to find one that knew what he was doing. I did my due diligence and ultimately chose Johnny after seeing this Yelp page, and I knew from the first visit that I had made the the right decision. Definitely recommend Johnny!! I've had back/shoulder problems for years, been trying various methods to fix/heal it (MD, massage, acupuncture, chiropractor, strength training). He's the first one to actually target the underlying problem and help me strengthen areas for prevention. I wish I'd found him a long time ago. Not sure how to describe what he does, but he "activates" your muscles to strengthen them properly. He incorporates full body movements, foam roller, Lacrosse ball, thera-bands, and some weights. I go 1x/week, I wish I could go more often (2x/wk would probably be ideal). He's very knowledgeable on how each muscle affects and interacts with all parts of the body. I went to johnny after having dealt with post infectious IBS. It caused me to not be able to move or be active for about 2 years. After this, going back to the gym was a huge pain in the ass. I kept going hurting myself in some way, where a pullup used to be easy now i struggled. I eventually went to johnny and realized that i had been working out pretty wrong the whole time and now that my body was so weak i couldnt hide the mistakes. I found Johnny Tea on Yelp while searching for a sports massage therapist who could help with my lingering back pain. I had always been active with dance, running, and gym classes, so the ongoing pain was taking its toll. We met for an evaluation where he asked about my past injuries, lifestyle, and fitness goals, and then we discussed all the issues that other doctors and physical therapists had noted in the past but only treated sporadically. Johnny is exceptional. He's everything I've ever wanted in a body support professional -- part physical therapist, part body work/body therapist, part personal trainer, all rolled into one. I came to Johnny in a pretty broken state, and I'd seen dozens of different professionals over the years. The bottom line is that each professional could only look at me through the lens of their own narrow discipline, and I needed pretty comprehensive support Johnny was different. Here's a little bit about my situation, in case it helps you. I used to be an athlete: martial arts, running, weights, hiking. And then .... my body just broke. Don't ask me to explain it, or any of the dozens of professionals who were useless (and quite expensive) to me over the years. I couldn't do even basic, gentle exercises without something going horribly wrong after a couple of days. My back would seize up (not fun, to put it mildly), a muscle group would spasm violently for a week, or a knee or foot would start acting up painfully. When I first came to Johnny, I had read his great reviews and decided to give it a shot. I was skeptical because I've been disappointed so many times. But he listened to me, and took it slow. Our first sessions were largely body work and in-office strengthening exercises. Gentle stuff. It's what I needed. After 5-6 weeks, he gently put me out into the gym. I warned him again about how my body breaks after even basic exercise, and he reassured me. Well, my body didn't break. On weeks where I was fragile, he took it easy and we did massage-like body work. On weeks where things were working, we hit the gym with a slowly-ramping set of exercises. I started to feel the joy of the athletic burn again, for the first time in years. Over time, I've gotten stronger. And just as important, I've rebuilt some confidence that exercise won't break me. Johnny draws on multiple disciplines and is constantly learning new things. He's able to look at the whole body, think holistically about it, and figure out what it needs to heal or grow. training with johnny is definitely "as good as it gets"! i've known johnny for about 6 years and have watched him train and work with clients - healthy and recovering from injury, etc. i'm currently training with him using his online program and it's the second best thing to training with him in person. after setting up a work out program tailored to your goals, he continues to be super attentive with phone calls and texts. you send videos of your work out so he can give feedback and check progress. it's a very flexible program using whatever equipment you have available. i love it! in the 3 months that i've used johnny's online program, i've gained strength (in certain movements, i use 10-15# more than what i used before), corrected form (making exercises "easier" and training the correct muscles) and my posture has dramatically improved. i have more definition and more endurance during my workouts. i really appreciate johnny's as a person and trainer. he has great expertise and knowledge about the health and fitness industry; he's very client-focused so he's able to really put together a program that is tailored to client goals and needs; and really important - he's super caring and encouraging - he's all about his clients. there's more but you can find that out for yourself when you train with him! read more

I would give Johnny more stars if I could. I have been recovering well from RSI (repetitive strain injury due to computer use) thanks to treatments with Johnny. Over a year ago I shared with a friend that I kept injuring myself while exercising and had chronic low back tightness. My friend suggested to find a physiologist (she might have made the title up), someone who can work with me in prescribing the correct exercise specifically for MY body. Since I didn't know anyone with those qualifications I started with Chiropractors and Physical Therapists. While my condition wasn't improving to the degree I wanted I kept looking and found Johhny on Yelp while searching for another modality. Johnny ended up being that "physiologist" I was looking for. I've been working with Johhny for the past seven months and am grateful for the steady progress we have made in my strength, movement quality, and postural awareness. The pain and injuries I've been suffering were a result of many factors that Johnny helped untangle and work on, thanks to his solid knowledge of human anatomy and movement. I have scoliosis. I've been sadly out of shape for several years. My posture is commonly not that great. I work a job where I sit for most of the day with my arms moving constantly in front of me for hours. My lower back was so messed up that a sneeze made my anxiety level spike, fearing random and spontaneous muscle strain. That on top of sitting still in a plane for 5 hours straight on a flight home for Christmas break, and sleeping in an unfamiliar bed, made a perfect storm for PAIN. Enter Johnny Tea. I found him on Yelp searching for a neuromuscular therapist in the Los Angeles area. And I am ever so glad. First, he's very accessible and communication is so easy with him. I emailed him on Christmas Eve afternoon and he responded that night. We kept this up through Christmas Day. I know, right?! He was open to texting too, which personally made me feel more at ease. In the same vein of communication, he's open and sociable in person; he made me feel like a friend, which helped as he worked his therapeutic magic on me with his wicked-strong, on-target hands. I would categorize him as a sports therapy kind of masseur: he presses down on points and stretches your limbs at unaccustomed angles and to your limits. He hurts so good! My pain threshold has always been high, but I will admit to a couple tears sneaking out. Wear comfy/stretchy clothes; he does play music you like during the massage part, but do not expect a fuzzy boutique spa experience - Johnny is direct and goes straight for the jugular of your troubled bits. After he's done it feels like those bits can take a deep breath, finally! Another thing about Johnny Tea: he's into educating you about the how, why, and where you're hurting. He'll pull out textbooks and diagrams and name names. He's of the mindset that everything is connected - if one thing is dysfunctional, it will affect another area, which will affect another area, etc. That's a mindset I can get behind: the worse my body felt, the more off-kilter my breathing became, which raised my anxiety level, which made me tense up more, which made my body feel worse, which starts the cycle all over again. Johnny is an active therapist in that not only does he work to relieve your immediate pain, he teaches you about what you need and how to overcome what's hurting you; he taught me exercises that lessen my pain and in my sessions included actual working out with equipment designed to strengthen areas whose weakness contributed to my physical troubles. This approach tells of a NMT who's focused on your long-term health, not one who wants to empty your pocketbook. Speaking of Johnny educating you, he is such a patient teacher! Working in public education myself, I can totally see him coaching teenagers, or leading a classroom. I'll own that I'm slow, more of a "monkey see, monkey do, can't walk and chew gum at the same time" kind of student, but Johnny is encouraging, positive and kind. This makes room for curiosity and activity, rather than intimidation or complacency. Johnny's helped me so much that I'm planning to make appointments with him on a regular basis any time I go to Los Angeles on break from work. Like I've told him, if I had disposable income I'd fly him out to Atlanta weekly just to make sure I'm on point with my health! read more

I am so grateful to have found Johnny T. I cannot recommend him highly enough. I was originally referred to him by a massage therapist who could see that I had serious issues associated with my scoliosis and spinal fusion. Johnny takes deep tissue massage to a whole new level with neuromuscular therapy. He combines that with just the right amount of exercise training and release work to have essentially transformed my body in just a few weeks. I am technically considered disabled, but I now can see becoming an active person for the first time in 20 years. I just want to state that this is the first yelp review I've written in my life, but it is totally worth it. I can't express enough how much Johnny has helped me improve my overall quality of life. Just after one session I felt amazing. I've been going to him for six months now. He really works with you to make your whole body stronger and is just a great guy as well. I guess I never really believed in personal training. But I gave it a try just so that I can kick start in getting back to exercising again. It's been nearly 7 months now and I don't plan on quitting anytime soon. I've gotten fitter, more energy and the best part; results commented by others.
