I started swimming about 10 months ago, but I had really terrible form. Over time, I experienced left shoulder pain that developed to the point that it was affecting my ability to swim and lift heavy objects. I saw an orthopedic surgeon who told me he couldn't do anything to help and referred me for PT. For a few months, I did PT and diligently adhered to the exercises he recommended, but I didn't see any improvement. What really bothered me was how nobody seemed to be able to explain to me what the problem actually was. I knew poor form had to do with it, but what exactly caused the problem and where did the problem lie? Finally, a friend of mine (marathon runner) recommended me to Vision for Enrichment. On my first visit, Rich (the founder) asked me questions to understand the history of my pain. He has experience as a swimmer and was able to describe how my poor form was causing repeated stress on a set of shoulder muscles. He described the ideal motion to avoid this pain and talked about how tenseness is the muscles that surround the shoulder -- pecs, lats, traps, back -- can anchor the shoulder joint in place, preventing my arm from having the necessary range of motion. I was excited -- I now knew exactly the motion that led to my problem, and I had an understanding of what kind of motion I needed to achieve to avoid exacerbating it. I finally felt some hope. Over the course of three sessions, Rich used deep tissue massage to loosen the surrounding muscles, cupping to displace the internal tissue, and stretches to show me what I could do at home to sustain the benefits of the therapy in between sessions. Sessions were intense! I felt like I was run over by a truck with thumb-studded tires. But after each session, I marveled at how much better my shoulder felt. Four years ago (Oct 2017), I stepped into the Vision For Enrichment (VFE) office in Pasadena, highly recommended by my trail runner/triathlete friend. I met John at a trail running event at the end of this summer, when I was saddled with nagging injuries - hamstring, glute and achilles pain. I had been trying to run through these for months. The race director suggested I spend 10 mins with John before and after the run. This was enough for me to experience his "magic hands" . I truly ran pain free that run and felt better the next day and those to follow. I have now spent 4 x 1.5 hr sessions with John over the last few months. As an avid runner and cyclist, I have never felt better. I call John "the body whisperer". For the last couple of years, I've had a persistent running injury that I never properly dealt with. Everyone loves a good, relaxing massage right? One that eases your aching muscles and puts you to sleep because you're so relaxed, with scented oils, cucumbers for your eyes, and soothing music, amirite? Well, I'll tell you now: you won't be getting that here. However, what you'll end up getting is so much better! I had my first experience with VFE after running on a Saturday with the Whittier Pacers, a local running club. I had a demo massage with Ken. After just a few minutes, he was identifying and treating issues and problem areas that years of lower quality massages at those $15 foot massage places couldn't help. As a casual distance runner, I suffer from pain in my hips, lower back, legs, and shoulders. This is only exacerbated by my job, in which I sit at a desk and work on a computer all day. I decided that despite the higher price point, I'd give Ken a try and booked a full session with him directly. This particular VFE location is situated inside a cross-fit gym. No AC, no fancy towels, soothing music, or essential oils. Because VFE is focused on treating athletes, your massage experience is going to be more like physical therapy than a traditional spa massage. Ken worked on each of my problem areas with precision and pressure, using a variety of techniques and tools. Afterwards, he demonstrated exercises and stretches that I could do to help alleviate my constant pain. I continued to see Ken after my toughest races, including half and full marathons, and my sessions with Ken helped extremely with my recovery! A distance runner and athlete himself, Julio works with many athletes, and after my first session with him, I'm looking forward to more, and seeing how my body can perform optimally with further treatment and maintenance with simple exercises and treatments I can do on my own. He has gotten me ready for races and has helped me recover as well after hard training and post races. Just recently, I've experienced my biggest injury that took me out of running for almost 3 months. I sprained my ankle early in the race, twisting it twice at mile 24 during Western Stated 100 end of June. I completed the race, but finished badly with a swollen bruised foot. I was pretty swollen, not able too put weight on it for a couple of weeks and had to wear a boot. I ended up with a hematoma from the trauma of the injury. As soon as my doctor gave me the okay to see a physical therapist I asked if I could see my massage therapist instead and he approved. After only 3 sessions with Rich, he got me moving. I had flexibility and pain relief on my foot especially in the toe area while I was still dealing with tenderness on the 5th metatarsal. I started jogging right away after seeing him. I see him very often and always leave feeling great. I am so very grateful for his guidance support and to able to always fix me when I'm dealing with issues. Training for ultra marathons is hard and taking care of your body is crucial to continue to train especially with the high mileage. I recommend seeing a physical therapist consistently for great results, performance and longevity. VFE is a great place. I see regulars who are body builders, runners, triathletes.
