I recently began incorporating hill sessions into my trail runs, much to my legs' dismay. For about a month now, my calves and hips and hammies have been super tight and nothing seems to bring relief. I decided to look for a local place that offered sports massage, saw all the great reviews here and decided to take a chance, and HOLY COW, it was truly the best idea I've had in a while! While this place may not have all the frills of a spa (it's quite small and the check-in desk is right in the main workout room where personal training sessions occur), I have to say that I received the best - and most therapeutic - massage I've ever received in my life, hands down. Kelsey was my practitioner and she was an excellent communicator from the get-go (as was the owner, Carina, who helped me schedule the appointment via text). Because I was open to talking during the session, I was able to learn a lot from Kelsey as she worked - I actually have a better understanding of what tissues were involved in my pain and what I can do to perhaps prevent that same kind of strain from happening again. She was also super attentive to my responses to her treatment - checking to see if the pressure was okay, making sure I wasn't experiencing pain beyond the typical tenderness that happens when working on tough muscles / fascia / trigger points, etc. She also followed up to see how I was doing afterwards, since it was a pretty intense session - totally went above and beyond. I went on a run today and my legs felt a thousand times better than they have for the past month. For once, it felt like the money I spent (which I felt was reasonable, especially given the high quality work) on a massage actually made a difference beyond the 90 minutes I was on the table. Each has their own approach to working out and each will give you an amazing workout. My favorite part of working out at Pro Fitness is that it is a more intimate setting. Ever since I quit smoking 6 years ago, I have been slowly packing on the weight. Not only from wanting to put food in my mouth but also from enjoying my glasses of wine with dinner. Six years later...50 pounds have crept on to my body and I decided I better do something serious about this. I have a gym membership at LA Fitness; however, if there is no one pushing me to do something, I'll walk on the treadmill for an hour watching TV or reading something and not do anything else. I searched on yelp and found Pro Fitness. So many reviews, such a high rating...let me give it a try! I spoke with Carinna and she was very welcoming. We met and discussed what my goals were and then it began! Ugh! What did I do? My schedule is always crazy, especially when you drive anywhere from 300-700 miles a week! How am I going to do this. I decided to start training in the evenings. I tried it for about 2-3 weeks and it just did not work. Carinna was patient with my crazy schedule that it took about a month to try to workout in the mornings with her. She was patient and very understanding of my situation; however, don't let that misguide you! She is a petite Swedish firecracker! She will make you do your planks, squats, and the damn rubber band around your ankles...walking side to side until you can't walk anymore? My butt never hurt that bad before! I enjoy the camaraderie of the semi-personal training and have met some wonderful people. We are all there to accomplish a goal. Not like LA Fitness...those women come in with their make-up and don't even sweat! I'm hoping to lose the weight that I have gained over the next year maybe two...but I know with Carinna's help, she'll whip me back into shape. The one thing that she said to me was let's not worry about the nutrition yet, let's get you exercising first. There truly is so many things going on with my life and to take it one step at a time really makes me feel like I'll accomplish my goal. I wish I could come daily so that my goal would be accomplished more quickly but I didn't pack on the pounds overnight, so I know I'm not going to lose the weight overnight. There are bad massages and good massages and occasional and rare, GREAT massages! This was one of those occasions where the massage was what I'm assuming is the best that could be had. I have just returned from Hiking Mt. Whitney, a 22-mile hike on the highest mountain in the contiguous 48 states, and my body was more than a little beat up, from sore shoulders and calves to my neck, arms and feet. My friend who lives is Pasadena recommended the place to me since she knew I needed it badly and she also knew Carina, the owner, from a hiking group. They have a couple of locations within the shopping center with different types of training, massage therapy, weight loss, acupuncture and many more services. They were super friendly and helpful when they greeted me as I walked in; Even the clients got into welcoming and chit-chatting with me. I filled out the paperwork and after meeting Gaby she took me over to the other office space for the massage. I don't get massages often, but have had enough to know an effective massage and honestly from the first touch down my spine I felt "therapy" happening as the tingle of loosening tissue having blood circulating again. From that moment the massage just got better and my bodies aches and pains slowly dissipated. We all rub our big muscles like our calves and shoulders, but it was quite exhilarating to have the forgotten areas, like your shins, ears, etc worked on and feel the tingle as the blood flows and the muscles relax. Head massages are incredibly relaxing. I never fell asleep, but I feel I had a better rest in that hour than I normally get during a nights sleep; I was actually a little groggy because I was so relaxed. I'm not someone who can afford to pamper myself like that on a weekly basis, but as well as I feel right now, I will treat myself and make a trip back here occasionally. Last September, I started semi-personal training twice a week with Carina while recovering from ankle reconstruction surgery. She is very knowledgeable with injuries and patient with you. She creates a combination of exercises especially for you. She also alternates the exercises so your body doesn't remember so you will improve much quicker. She keeps track of the exercises she assigns you. She makes sure that you use proper form when doing the exercises. She checks with you before you start of the session to see how you are feeling. She will modify any exercises to make sure you don't get injured and to make the most of the session. She doesn't waste the clients' time. Once you step in the room, she directs you on what to do. I have never done any of these exercises (circuit training) before. My background is in ballroom dancing. WOW! Do I feel and see the difference doing these exercises. I have gained muscle and have high energy. I can do whatever I want during the day and not feel tired in the evening. I love the camaraderie of the semi-personal training. I have met some wonderful people. This is another reason that motivates me to come and not skip a session. We are all there to accomplish our individual goals. It's an affordable alternative to the pricey private personal training. If you want to feel better, increase your energy and look beautiful, Carina's workouts are for you. [[This review--my FIRST ever Yelp review--is for Julie, my Pilates instructor!]] I have been going to Pro Fitness for about one year, doing Pilates Group sessions with Julie. This is a huge deal for me because I spend most of my time either eating junk food while watching tv, or trying to convince myself to work out while moping around in gym clothes (and then failing). After about 10 minutes on a treadmill, I usually want to explode from boredom. Julie, however, makes 6am workouts (6 AM!!) not only bearable, but fun too! Every class, Julie changes up the exercises and the piece of equipment (Reformer, Cadillac, the Chair, or a Mat workout) you work on so you will never get bored; and once you learn the basics and can get through them without dyingggg, she comes up with more and more difficult exercises to keep challenging you. She was always there earlier, ready to go, with a big smile to greet my eyes-half-closed-6am-face; and as a trainer, she was always really nice, encouraging, and tailored the workout to what suited you (e.g. being conscious of any personal injuries, helping you stretch out if you are sore, what kind of music you like). She even managed to find ways for me to work out when I was stuck in this ridiculously huge arm sling post-shoulder surgery! In her day-to-day life, Julie is also a really health-conscious person, so feel free to ask her for any yummy (but also healthy) recipes or advice on diet and/or working out. [[Review of Pro Fitness Network:]] The location itself isn't big, but isn't crowded at all, which only means class sizes will never get crazy full and are at most 4 people/session (for Pilates, at least). There are two parts to PFN--one unit where they do massages, kettle bell workouts, personal training, and a whole bunch more (can't remember them all), and another unit in the same plaza that is dedicated to Pilates. There's a parking lot for that plaza, so there was always plenty of parking when I was there. I finally found a place that had semi-personal training that I felt comfortable going to. Carina is great at helping you reach your goals. She is a friendly but experienced trainer that helped me increase the strength in my upper back and arms. I had pain in my upper back and arms from constantly working on a computer at work. By slowly building up my strength in those areas, I am now not in pain when I get home from work. Carina listens to you and custom tailors your work out which is great. After doing physical therapy on and off for a couple months, I was getting really sick of the repetitive exercise and the impersonal sessions with a copay as much as a personal trainer. I found pro fitness network because they are local, but quickly saw that they offered some really cool and personalized options for a fair price. I spoke with Carina the owner on the phone and she matched me with Jonas to start out for corrective exercise therapy. Jonas is wonderful to work with. He spends time to get to know your body, goals, and does an in-depth intake session with video and tests to identify areas that need work. What I like about Jonas's sessions and corrective exercise is that it's dynamic and works on your entire body rather than the traditional mode of physical therapy with repetitive exercises and homework. Plus you get an entire 60 minutes of attention to make sure you're doing it right. It may not be the most high tech beautiful gym, but they have everything you need to train and the people there are incredibly nice, supportive, and knowledgeable. I had to take a couple months off when I lost my job in May and I can't wait to return to pro fitness network soon! read more

This is really a great place to workout with a trainer. Friendly, small, non intimidating. Carina is so hands on and knowledgeable. Somehow she can have 5 people in a group but she gives each one individual attention. I would never go work out on a consistent basis if I wasn't comfortable there. I actually look forward to my workouts with Carina. Pro Fitness is coed and everyone gets along but it's particularly welcoming to women especially if, like me, you've been away from a gym too long. Just finished my 3rd class here! Honestly I'm really glad I decided to start taking semi-private training classes here! Previously my only form of exercise was to go jogging but that got really boring really fast. I had always wanted to learn how to lift weights/do strength training however I was too embarrassed to go to the gym alone to attempt to do so and have all the macho guys at the gym judge me while I had no idea what I was doing. I also didn't enjoy group classes as usually people in group classes are of different levels of how fit they are so I always felt like I was that one person in the back struggling while everybody else was doing fine and I didn't have any personal help from the teacher. Carina's semi-private training sessions are great! You get customized sessions based off your needs and strengths. You're not doing the exact same thing as everybody else that's there with you, but you're more working out alongside them not with them. Which is awesome because everybody just does their own workout at the pace they want to! Also all the ladies I have met there so far have been very friendly including Carina herself!! I would highly recommend this place as it is a great environment for somebody who wants to get fit by has trouble sticking to a gym routine or doesn't like group classes (like me). I always feel great after a session with Carina and feel like she's been showing me new workouts that I would have never ever tried on my own! Dorothy the acupuncturist literally saved my sanity! I had been walking around with a massive spasm in my back for over a week, I'd tried massage, chiropractor, hot and cold packs, you name it- nothing worked. Then I remembered a friend gushing about her acupuncturist, I got her number and gave Dorothy a call. She was able to see me the very next day. We sat down and she went over my history, then got to work. The needles didn't hurt AT ALL. I can't even explain what they feel like, because their really isn't any pain...think finger nail pressure. My back relaxed almost immediately and with a few "to-go tacks" in my arms and foot, I was feeling 100% the next day. I am sold! She has also helped me with my ulcerative colitis issues and is overall a wonderful person to work with. She works out of Glendale and Pasadena. If I could give her 6 stars I would! This is also a review for my pilates instructor Maria. She is wonderful! So sweet and kind and really gives a great workout. She has been instrumental in my recovery from a Cesarean and has helped me get my abs and posture back after having a baby. I would recommend her 100%! read more

UPDATE: I'm back! and with GREAT NEWS! I finally hit the BIG THREE-OH! Yep, 30 POUNDS ...AND COUNTING!!! Since my last update I've made it through Christmas and holiday parties, New Year's Eve Party and New Year's Day Dinner, my Mom's big birthday bash (in late January), and even went to Las Vegas for several days! And to top it all off, I just went through a week of the flu, or whatever it is that's been going around. (I don't know about anyone else, but instead of losing my appetite with the flu, I felt like I was starving and constantly wanted to eat!) I've described all of this to say that I've had a "regular life" and had all the "ordinary experiences" that we all go through, AND I am continuing to lose weight. I am thinner, stronger and healthier! I had to miss a few days of working out when I was sick (and got a little lazy in Vegas) but I didn't let that slow me down. I just got back on course, and continued where I left off. I look forward to my workouts with Carina 3 times per week, and In between I continue to walk almost daily -- my favorite time of day -- "me time" -- time to enjoy nature and be with my own thoughts. I'm pretty good now at estimating the right portions and calories of the foods I eat. For me, the highlight of my week is seeing Julia and tracking the progress I've made on the scale, and talking about any problems I may have encountered, or get ideas for better food choices or new recipes. AND...I still treat myself once a month to a great massage with Vanessa. She never fails to amaze me with her ability to find all the right spots --like little kinks I didn't know were there! :-) I'm stronger, noticeably thinner and firmer (30 pounds? -- well I'd guess so!) and EVERYONE I know is commenting (positively) on the changes they see in me. I am a massage therapist and I've had many massages. For the first time in my life, I hurt my back, right hip, and I have pain shooting down my right quad as well as numbness and now I am the client. I've missed work and it's been a most humbling experience to be in constant pain. Today, I was lucky enough to book a massage with Nora Stewart, WOW! I'm a new woman. I'm positive that between chiro and acupuncture I received, it all helped to get my muscles relaxed enough to ALLOW Nora to even get into my psoas and quad, slowly, specifically, deliberately and methodically. Now, the problem is not solved, that's up to me, but I am out of pain for the first time since this all started last Thursday night, it's Tuesday today. MFR works and I'm so grateful to Nora for easing my pain down to an annoying ache instead of me laying on the floor all day like I did Friday. Thank you Nora. I will definitely be coming back for more work. It's a process and i appreciate your stillness which gave my body time and space to elongate and open up as well. My bff lives in Pasadena and somehow she convinced me to sign up for 3 Saturday morning training sessions at Pro Fitness Network. These are semi-private, so we can train together. I was *very* skeptical of getting up early on a weekend and driving all the way to Pasadena just to work out, but I fell in love! We got the introductory special, which was half price, but even at full price the "semi-personal" training sessions are only $30/hr. It's great cause we get to spend time together and motivate each other. Massages are affordable too and totally amazing! I love how approachable this gym is. It's bright and welcoming too.
