For 11 years I have gone to J's and after moving all over San Diego (even as far north as Rancho Peñesquitos) I STILL always drive to see Wally / Sal and the other guys. Literally the most consistent haircut I could ever get. A few years ago I changed my hairstyle and they always remember how and what to do. Another fantastic visit to J's. Was helped by Robert "scissor hands". This time rather then a full haircut and hot shave I only had funds for a quick cut. Regardless Robert made sure I was happy with every aspect of my hair cut and even put in the extra effort to help clean up the lines of my beard. I came in as a new customer recently and dealt with Sonny. Sonny is a very friendly guy who seems genuinely kind. He was great to talk too except all the personal questions. I was asked many questions about my line of work (real estate), what I owned, how big they were, where they were, exactly what I did to earn my living, etc. I tried to stay friendly on the topic but It was a bit much for idle conversation with a complete stranger. Sonny is a talented barber and did a nice job on my basic snip n clip. He took off less than I asked for as a precaution, which is thoughtful. His ability to cut hair well saved him a bit from ignoring what I wanted. Sonny never asked me how i wanted my sideburns or if i wanted any at all. He never asked about how i wanted my neck line finished. So in the end, I didnt get what I wanted because he just started doing it how HE wanted it I guess. Overall Sonny was a great guy who was devoted to doing a good job. He just didnt have my personal interests in mind as much as he should - we have to walk around looking like you cut us Sonny and we have preferences. Like rounded corners or leaving my sideburns. Id recommend being a bit more interested in what Im paying for and less in my personal business, but I dont mean that with an attitude. Sonny was a nice guy and I'll likely go back. First of all, the price of a regular haircut is no longer $15. It was changed in December, 2017, to $20. But the value you get is excellent. This was not a 7 minute haircut. It was more like 20-25 minutes. I have been to Sal two times now and both haircuts were excellent. Sal has been cutting hair for more than 25 years and has been at J's for more than 16 years. I could be wrong, but I think Wally has more years cutting hair than Sal. Walk-ins are welcomed. If there is a line, then it is well worth the wait. BTW - Sal takes Wednesdays off. read more

Praise For Wally the Barber: I'm typically not very free with passing out compliments; unless, that is; someone really impresses me or deserves it. That is just what happened today when I took a chance and had Wally (AKA Waleed) cut my hair... owner/operator of J's Great Cuts. When he finished, I thanked him and handed him $20, which covered the $15 haircut and a $5 tip, for which he graciously thanked me. I then complimented him and left, totally pleased and satisfied that I had found "my barber." So, why do I say, "I took a chance"? Simply because I don't find too many barbers that can do a proper job, i.e., cut my hair to my satisfaction. I have a fairly thick head of hair, which is quite fine in texture and totally straight without any curl. What happens is, most garden-variety barbers shift into automatic pilot and cut as they normally would, despite the fact that I usually inform them how I need it to be done, and what happens if it's not that way... no big deal, really. However, if they make any mistakes cutting the sides, every glitch becomes a stepped notch. Then, there's the overhanging "mushroom top" or "bowl-cut" effect if they flare the razor out at the top of each pass, as many tend to do. The thing is, if I had any curl in my hair at all, these things would simply blend in, not be magnified. If a barber cuts my hair too short at my "cow-lick" swirl at the back of the part, it tends to stand up like corn stalks until it grows out. If the barber doesn't taper it properly in the back, then, when I tilt my head to look up, my hair mashes against my collar and sticks out straight. If the sides aren't properly tapered, in a few days my hair will be poking out over my ears and the temples of my glasses. Then, the typical barber will wet my hair down and comb it tight against my head (possibly to mask any mistakes they made). They'll then hand me a mirror and ask how it looks; expecting a compliment. However, I tell them I can't tell how it looks all plastered down like that. Wally did none of these things even without me having to remind him. My hair looks positively great and falls right into place when I comb it. Right from the start it became apparent that Wally is a master at his trade. Stopped by this place this morning to get a haircut. Robert was the only barber there and said he could do a horseshoe cut. That was an understatement, he cut an excellent horseshoe and those of us who get them know how difficult it is to find someone who can do them correctly. This is the best haircut I have received since Tony in Lemon Grove passed. The place was clean and the atmosphere was great. The prices are spot on and I will definitely be back again. read more

I was told by a coworker to go to J's Great Cuts and ask for Kevin. It has been almost 5 years now that I have been going here and it is THE BEST barber shop in the San Diego. I drive all the way from Fashion Valley to come here. Kevin and Edwar are the ones I usually go to and they are not barbers, they are artists especially when they use the straight razor for the line up on the beard.
