I just happened to be in the area paying a visit to my bank when, what's this? Ice cream just a walk away across the parking lot? And the sign says they've got salty Oreo, one of my most obscurely favorite ice cream flavors in the world? I'm in! Ever since moving here from a much larger city back east, there's been a hole in my heart where high quality, local ice cream once resided. Particularly where the aforementioned flavor once resided. Here, I was not disappointed. They serve it primarily as a "concrete". This is basically what us commoners know as the Dairy Queen Blizzard. It's somewhere between hand scooped and milkshake, but it's not falling out or spilling when turned upside down. The quality of this ice cream is unmatched by anything I've ever had before in Lubbock. They have plenty of other flavors and styles to choose from, but I know exactly which one I will always come back for. Service was very friendly and with a smile. Prices are on the higher side ($6 for a medium concrete) but reflective of the quality. I love the spacious covered patio and the outdoor only seating style. On my most recent trip to Lubbock, my son suggested we come to J's Creamery for a little after dinner treat. It was a little out of the way from where we were, but it was totally worth the trip. This little stand alone shop had a steady line in the drive thru and well as the walk up window. There is no dine in option, but more of a hang out outside of the establishment on one of their benches type place. The employees looked like a bunch of young kids, but they were professional and courtesy. Service was slow, but the place was busy and they do make each item when ordered. What they are known for is their made to order custards. They have sundaes, shakes, frappes, concretes, smoothies and drinks. I went with a concrete which is custard with added mix ins of your choice blended together. My concrete of choice was the Brownie Bling which came with vanilla custard, peanut butter, brownie bites and hot fudge. That first bite had my eyes rolling back into my head. It was so delicious! The smooth, velvety custard with the combination of peanut butter and brownies was the perfect bite if there ever was one. I don't know how they blended it that perfect where every scoop had all the ingredients. I tore that thing up and had to force myself back into the car and not buy another one. I have always liked custards, but this was one of the better ones I have had. I definitely want to check out some of their fruity concretes as well as other items. I hate that I just found out about this place during my son's junior year at Tech. I could've been coming here on every trip. Now I'll just have to come on every last trip of his senior year. I'll start with the one thing I liked about J's Creamery: the custard was creamy. Okay. There. That's about it. I'm even going to be generous and give the creaminess two stars rather than one. Just for the heck of it. If you're looking for creamy custard and you don't mind the negative aspects of this establishment (which I'm about to go into), then I guess this is an okay place. But... If you're over forty, definitely over fifty, or especially past sixty, you might not want to visit... in the heat of the West Texas summer (90 to 100+ Fahrenheit)... without a portable air conditioner, a portable chair, and a portable jar of patience. At least give it some careful thought. The first thing I noticed when I pulled up to this place was that everyone *standing* around the front of the closed-off glass where you do your ordering was under thirty years old. Everyone working behind the glass was also under thirty. Most were probably under twenty. I suppose that might be because ordering from this place is very uncomfortable if you are blessed with any of the age-related maladies that afflict most non-child people, such as arthritis or sensitivity to heat. There is simply a cement slab for you to stand on, in the heat, while you wait for them to open the window and acknowledge you, take your order, and then make your order, and then open the window again and hand your order out to you. Why don't they have a place for people to sit down? Why don't they have water-misters to keep people cool? Or heck, why couldn't they enclose the entire area so that everyone, and not just the people in the air conditioning on the other side of the glass, could be comfortable? I have no idea. I'm guessing it isn't worth it to them to expand their customer base to people who sweat or anyone in their over-thirties. It honestly seemed agist to me, so there was that. The thing that truly irritated me, however, was the custard I ordered. As I said, it was creamy. But I ordered mint - and what I got was vanilla. Somewhere down inside the thin plastic cup you're supposed to hold to eat this ice-cold mess (OUCH for any fingers in general, but definitely ouch for fingers that have Raynauds or, again, arthritis - seriously, you can't even afford styrofoam or thick paper to protect your customers' hands??) there was a thin strip of green, and I am guessing that was the "mint" syrup that was supposed to flavor the vanilla. But even after I took it home and poured the non-melted half of the custard into a bowl and stirred it myself, it tasted only like vanilla. There was basically no mint in it at all. Everything about the treat was anything but a treat. Ordering it was hot and expensive and uncomfortable, dealing with the employee that finally came to the window gave me the impression of general establishment rudeness because of that closed-off glass while you're out there sweating - and finally, enjoying the custard itself was a failure because it was not what I ordered and it was painful to hold. I swear to you that I can not understand the appeal of this place to so many people. I don't get it. I honestly just do not, one iota, get it. It's so much easier and more comfortable and satisfying to buy a pint of mint chocolate chip from the grocery store, take it home to my air conditioned house with CHAIRS in it, and eat it there. SMDH I'm sorry. I don't get it. read more

It's an occasional, special treat because it's a bit expensive (not as bad as Marble Slab or Cold Stone) but it's worth it! The only downsides are the long menu full of deliciously difficult decisions (there are no bad ones) and the usually long line (lots of people know how good it is)! I usually get some kind of Concrete (like a DQ Blizzard) usually with like mocha ice cream, brownie bits, caramel, Oreos, etc! If you're looking to save some money, get the biggest size and split it! This place is like Shake Shack but without the burgers. They have solid frozen custard and good mix-ins at reasonable prices. The blackberry brownie concrete is pretty good. Its brownie and blackberries blended into vanilla frozen custard. It's not very fruity and there's barely any blackberry flavor. The blackberry is mainly for aesthetics. It has a good vanilla and brownie flavor and I love how there are big chunk a of brownie folded in. read more

Went here on a Wednesday night at 9:30pm and it was POPPIN'! That's a good sign. My parents, friends, and I all ordered at the walk up window and ordered smoothies, sundaes, comes, and milkshakes. I personally ordered the salted caramel brownie sundae, minus the sea salt! It was SOOO GOOOOOOOD! The brownies were soft, the ice cream was creamy, and the caramel was a good touch.
