The cake inspo/reference photo. This cake has two colors. I asked for ONE color cake and was ignored.

I wish my experience with this shop was the same as those with positive reviews. Unfortunately, it's not. I was looking for cakes for CNY and a birthday. I tried contacting them through WeChat but no luck. I called the phone number provided here in yelp and was told to text and send photos for references of the cakes. Which I did. I didn't get responses so I texted again, which was the next day and still no reply from the shop. My uncle decided we should just go to the shop and ask in person. We go to the shop, told to wait because the owner is busy. Which we did. It was about 10-15 mins? We then showed photos of the cakes we wanted. Again, one cake is for CNY and the other a birthday. The CNY cake was a cake photo inspired by THEIR own cake they've made before. The birthday cake was explained and asked for certain specifics in person. Because the CNY cake was red we had some trouble picking a flavor, vanilla, chocolate and there were others. But the baker recommended we try red velvet because she said "Yeah, it's good, try." I thought why not because its a red cake, so red velvet flavor. Ok... WRONG DECISION. We concluded the consultation for the cakes and they didn't even take a name or number, let alone give us a receipt. We told the lady our pick up date and time, around 1-2pm in the weekend of CNY. To which it seemed like she was cool with that and told me make a deposit later for the cakes. That night, I made the deposit through Venmo. Around 1:30 of pick up date we arrive at the shop. The workers were confused because we didn't have a name, number or receipt for the cakes ordered. However, they were able to identify my order based on pictures of cakes I had sent them for reference. Then we were told to wait. I thought it would be maybe 10-15 mins but NOPE. We waited for an hour, maybe an hour and 15-20 mins for the cakes. None of the workers bothered to let us know the wait time. I went up to the cashier again to be told to just wait a little more. Still didn't say the estimate wait time because our cakes were being made as we waited for the hour or so there. There were at least 10 orders that came and gone in this wait time. The baker lady did apologize for the wait and blamed it on it being busy because of CNY. I didn't have much to say anymore at this point. This place is a RED FLAG for us from the start. Wasn't ready at the time we asked for, reserved it for. Couldn't find our order due to their lack ofs. Eating the cakes and then seeing their health score and reasoning on Yelp made me gag even more. The cakes were not worth the trouble of nuisance and time. The red velvet cake had a bitter aftertaste to it. The red whip cream had so much food coloring in it that our teeth were stained from eating it. No flavor of cream cheese for the cake whatsoever. Just slabs of cake with flavorless whip and red food coloring on top, leaving a bitter aftertaste. For the price of this cake, it wasn't worth it at all. The birthday cake slightly made up for the red velvet one but not by much. They ignored everything I asked for and since they were literally making the cake as we waited they just looked at the photo to make it. When I asked for an all beige (one color) cake. They made it like the reference photo when I came in person to tell them how I wanted. It was vanilla flavor, so I guess it was alright. I would prefer TLJ or Paris over this though. Lesson learned. In my opinion the cakes here are for the aesthetics and design only. I will stick with TLJ and Paris.

Highly recommend this bakery. The cakes were for my father in law's birthday. He and all our guests were amazed by the design. Besides the stylish look, we loved the taste, too. The cream was so fresh, and the sponge cakes were very soft. Additionally they're NOT TOO SWEET. which was perfect to us. I should've took a picture when they were in the clear pack boxes. So elegant. The employees there were very very friendly, nice and HELPFUL. Very easy to find a parking near by, which is rare in Flushing. Lol. Will definitely go back again and again.

I am a loyal fan of theirs. I really like their cakes and new products. Recently, they launched a new series of handmade taro balls and mango sago. They are so delicious. Come and check in now.

I came across this small bakery near Kissena very last minute. They were able to make a beautiful cake in such a short amount of time. It turned out better than expected and the taste was decently good. The lady was really nice when I asked for a final change and paid a lot of attention to all the details I asked for. I showed them a picture of a happy birthday candle with the Y on the side of the cake and they did just that. Although it would have looked better all on the cake but it definitely shows how detailed they are in the pictures you show. I highly recommend this place although it was a little pricy the quality of this cake definitely meet my expectation.

Stopped in here for their grand opening day. It seemed like they were not really ready for customers yet. There was only a few items in the display case: A few cupcakes, a tray of un-decorated macarons and one small pink cake decorated with Hello Kitty. Also some mousse filled cups were on top of the counter. Not sure whether to give this place 3 or 4 stars because they weren't selling much to try. And I only liked one of the two desserts. Not sure, but they seem to specialize in Parisian Macarons and custom design cakes. They had a tv, displaying some very pretty decorated macarons and expertly designed cakes. The picture I especially liked was the cake shaped like a bowl of noodles (need see the picture. Its just too pretty and difficult to describe). But those are just pics. I'd prefer to see some actual cakes. The person I talked to, (their english wasn't that good), told me that they like to make everything super fresh, so I won't see much on display. That its best to call them and pre-order, so they can make it fresh. She said, "We are all about freshness". Yeah, but I want to see and taste something before I pre-order it. The decorated mini yellow cake cupcakes, filled with a bit of strawberry jam and vanilla cream. Three beautiful hand decorated roses made of frosting, covered the top. The amount of frosting seemed way more than the small amount of yellow sponge cake. It didn't seem worth $5, for such a tiny cupcake. I need more actual sponge cake to be satisfied. I wasn't particularly happy with these. The amount of actual sponge cake was barely one bite. Little mousse cups decorated with cute kawaii faces. Flavors: black sesame, chocolate, coconut, and mango. Tried the chocolate and the mango. These were pretty good! Both flavors had a nice rich creamy flavor. It also comes in this cool plastic cup with a screw top metal lid that can be re-used. Seating: There is only a few high stool seats by the window counter. Its a small space. Final note: If I'm in the neighborhood, I might try some other mousse flavors. But not at all impressed with their cupcakes.

I love this place so much. Always go J's Confections for all my birthday cakes for my family. They also make custom cake as well. I just send them a picture then she will make a nice and surprise cake for me. The desserts are delicious no matter which one you choose. We tried almost all of the cakes, pastries, cookies, etc. 100% recommend this place.

Their confections are overpriced in my opinion. I have not tried them so I can not comment on that but I have went for their brown sugar bubble tea. It's okay, the boba is not really fresh and the tea is just.. tea. I would only go here if you can not make it to other bubble tea stores in a jiffy.

i just recently worked with Jenny for my son's first birthday and everything turned out great. Not did everything came out so cute but all my guests raved about how good the desserts were. Me who is not a cake person loved and ate multiple pieces. I would highly recommend working with Jenny and her team. Thank you for everything!!!

Wonderful cakes and desserts! We celebrated many occasions with cakes from here and they weren't just beautiful creations they were delicious! The cakes are light and fluffy also not too sweet. My family also loves the handmade taro ball and grass jelly that comes in 4 different flavors.

The baker's skill in decoration of the desserts is absolutely amazing, but the taste and flavoring needs a lot of work! Also, everything is very expensive for the quality of the baked goods. My aunts frequently like to order from this bakery because of the way the cakes and macarons look, but not the taste. After a picture session with the cake, it sits there on the table barely touched. The cakes simply taste like regular vanilla cake that is not fluffy enough and the macaron fillings taste like plain butter. I truly do admire the various characters on the macarons though. However, while they may look different, there is no variety of flavors and fillings.

Creative, tasty are the two words describes their pastries. My favorite are their fresh fruit tea, durian crepe cake and meat floss cream cake. Although last one might sound a bit funky yet it's the best and must have!

I am a fan of the pandan flavor desserts and bought two that I wanted to try. One being a roll cake and the other layer cake. The pandan roll cake with taro I was told is a specialty that they only have on weekends. It was really flavorful, moist and spongy, just perfectly touched with a dash of sweetness in both the cake and the cream - I personally don't like overly sweet foods, and this is just perfect for me and my mom. I'm equally pleased with the layer cake as well it was very fresh and have that "QQ" texture - deliciously chewy and bouncy. This too, just hit right for me on the gentle sweetness, the pandan flavor keeping the spotlight in this dessert. My mom and I are big fans of these desserts. We just came back trying out others pandan layer cakes in Downtown Flushing and this shop beats them by a large margin. I hope to come back more when we could even though this shop is quite a distance for us.

I walked into a clean, well lit space designed for quick selection rather than lingering, and the display cases were filled with brightly decorated cakes and pastries that looked consistently fresh. The mango based cakes are the most consistent thing here. I tried one and found it light, creamy, and built around fresh fruit rather than overly heavy frosting, which made it easy to finish even after a full meal. The matcha cake also worked well, leaning more milky than bitter, with a soft sponge that held its structure without feeling dry. The pork floss cakes are one of the more interesting savory sweet options, and they came out better than I expected since they did not go overboard on sweetness. The croissants and egg tarts are solid supporting items rather than the main reason to come. The croissant I had was flaky with a noticeable butter layer, and the egg tart was best eaten warm as the custard tightens up when cold. The purple rice desserts are heavier but work if I want something more filling and texturally different from the fruit cakes. Service was generally efficient even when the bakery was busy, and the staff moved through orders quickly. Prices sit a bit higher than older style Flushing bakeries, but the tradeoff is cleaner presentation, more modern flavor combinations, and consistently fresh looking cakes. For a modern bakery stop in Flushing, Shakalaka delivers on quality and visual appeal.

At $2.95 each I got a baked roast pork bun, and a pineapple topping custard bun. Both were very big and every component was high-quality. The pork inside was a natural looking sauce - not bright red, the pork was cut up into regular pieces/strips it was like a healthy meal. The bread part was fluffy, dense and didn't feel like an empty white flour situation. The custard bun had a very generous amount of a custard in it and the pineapple topping didn't crumble off and fall off into pieces, but was very nicely made shell. And it was "Not-too-Sweet"! AND they were also warm! The shop's pretty simple with maybe 10 different items, also frozen baos to go, lotus wrapped sticky rice and tarts, the homemade pineapple cakes looked good. I got a Hong Kong milk tea (hot) $2.25, but the flavors weren't that strong. There were a lot of students picking up snacks, probably from nearby Queens, College, young families, a grandpa and his adult grandson came in for hot milk tea, and egg tarts. The lady who I assume is the boss said she had held a pop-up shop about two years prior which blew up, hence what we see here. The selection here was deceptively small compared to chain bakeries, but it didn't take us long recognise how much power the smaller selection packs and, actually, how the selection really is not small at all. The matcha red bean loaf grabbed my attention straight away and didn't disappoint, but their red bean bun was just as impressive, as it's a more bread-y counterpart to the fluffy versions other bakeries typically have. The onioissant is definitely experimental and worked better on the chive bacon cream cheese one than on the pollack roe, which was a bit too much on the salty and fishy side for my liking. Their chocolate horn is at least twice as big as a typical one you'll find at other bakeries and has a rich dark chocolate filling which was a pleasant surprise. Their coffee brioche pastry was another hit, thanks to the strong coffee filling and delicate layers of pastry. There's ample tables and chairs, beverage menu, and I'm sure we'd come hang if we lived closer. I can't wait to go back.
