So I made a yelp account just to leave this review, and I have never felt the need to leave a negative review for a place before, but this was the worst nail experience I have had at the salon. I asked for a coffin shape French tip, and the attached photos is what I paid for. I came in for a full acrylic set and was told the nail technician who does their acrylics was not available, And the only thing they could do for me was a gel set of nails so I agreed because I came with a friend who also wanted to get her nails done and I didn't want to just sit there and have nothing to get done so I agreed, and was told the charge would be double the original acrylic price. I didn't have a good feeling about the experience but I thought I was just being closed minded and kept an open mind in hopes that I was just being paranoid. One nail technician glued my clear nails on just using gel polish, she filed and shaped them and then switched to another nail technician who will be doing the coloring on my nails. Multiple times I had to direct the process a bit and this was my first time speaking up and being vocal because I really wanted to have a good experience and make sure that my nails came out looking nice. I had to continuously ask for adjustments to my nail polish color as well as covering up see-through spots that were not covered and if I had not asked I feel they would have just been left clear. The nail technician kept adding coats of polish on which was fine but the end result was extremely lumpy as well as the topcoat turned the end of my nails yellow. She added too much polish and I was left with a lumpy drippy shape, and the design was very unclean and I would not recommend anyone to go here. I told her I was not happy with the end result but it was already 7:15 PM and I was ready to go home she offered to file my nails and it honestly did nothing to the shape and style. I only leave this review because I hope they see this and take it as a sign to practice more nail skill as an art instead of just as a job, the whole set was $65 with the tip and I paid and left with no plans to return, I hope this helps someone from spending money on a Day at the salon only to be left disappointed as I was. Customer service was great, the workers were friendly and listened to my request, but the quality of work brings down the quality of the entire experience. For some reason whenever I get a gel manicure there, it never seems to stay on for more than a few days and then peels off. Ive gone to another salon down the street and it lasted 2 full weeks, like expected. I dont know what method they use to apply, or they do not properly prep the nails...but its not worth the money. I have gone there quite a few times for a gel manicure and it has legitimately never lasted more than 5 days, I thought I was tripping out! Yes, the place is cheap (you can get a manicure and pedicure for the cost of a manicure here) but I think id rather pay up and have it actually last. Maybe the regular manicures are okay? This will not be a good review! I had gone there ONE TIME on May 10th at 3:48pm and paid $46 ($38 mani/pedi +$8 tip) with a gift card. I know for a fact I had a $9 balance on a $100 gift card when I left. I went to check the balance on the phone the other day so I could make a small purchase with the $9 and my balance turned out to be $0. How was that possible?? So I went online to look at the transaction history. Shocked, I saw a $9 TRANSACTION at joyful nails on June 20 at 7pm. I never went back a 2nd time especially at 7pm and certainly didn't purchase anything for $9. That wasn't possible. I went to the salon to discuss this with one of the workers (manager?). She said that's impossible. How could the salon do that? How?? There's billions of dollars of card fraud every year so it's quite possible. Coincidence you say?? A coincidence that Joyful nails charged $9 when that was all that remained on the card? What service could I possibly get for $9? I demanded my $9 back in front of customers. I wanted to have a private conversation but she insisted on discussing it in front of customers. That was her choice. She finally and angrily gave the $9 to me after a not so pleasant conversation. It wasn't the $9 so much (it was the principle) and I'm not the type that would go to a business and accuse them of fraud/theft but this was mighty suspicious and too much of a coincidence! Just sayin....My advice... be careful when giving this vendor or any vendor a debit/gift card! Always check your transaction history. Make sure it's accurate. Just give cash or a credit card. Easier to dispute with a cc. The takeaway for me.... This will be the last time I ever use a gift card. EVER! read more

Simple and clean with high ceilings, Joyful Nails is brand new (where Heavy Petting used to be) at a much needed intersection (SM & La Jolla). Their massage chair was POWERFUL, the best massage yet, and maybe that's why it didn't have the foot-tub part attached. They bring in separate liner-wrapped foot-tubs to your heavy-duty massage chair for the pedicure. I only got the pedi done but the lady was nice, they have a HOT English fluent receptionist and seem to have the full menu of nail services. Massage Pedi $18, regular pedi $15. Went in for a French tip gel manicure and the lady had no idea what she was doing. I should have known it was going to be a disaster when the lady cut my nails. I had my acrylics removed and had rather long nails underneath, i asked for almond shaped and instead of just filing them down she cut them down excessively and looked awkward, not almond shape at all. Whatever, I let it slide thinking she is a professional she knows what she is doing. A 12 year old could have painted my nails better then what i paid for. Looks sloppy, smudged and uneven, I came home only to cut and re paint my nails myself. I live locally and my friend and I stopped in on a whim. Absolutely horrible mani/pedi. I asked for the lady to basically outline the half moons on the nail beds of my hands with a color and paint the rest clear. She did everything but the tip of the nail in color. She didn't clean up the tips, so I asked her to get the color off the area that was supposed to be free of polish. She shot me a dirty look and then tidied up the area with acetone. I said that was fine and she then tried to send me to the dryer without doing a full clear coat over the nails. The edges were completely uneven and the clear coat didn't go to the edges of my nails on the sides, so only part of my nails were shiny. The color on the pedicure was splotchy and also did not go to the edges of my nails. My friend got a full acrylic set and the edges were sharp on a few of her nails. Also, they began falling off within two weeks. I removed the entire mani/pedi 2 days later, as the polish started to peel. ALSO, while they say they take credit cards when we came in (and have the credit card logos on display), at the end of our services they said they would only take cash. I looked up Joyful Nail on Yelp and decided to give it a try. I always prefer smaller nail places because they're not nearly as hectic and the service tends to be better. And this one did not disappoint. I got a french tip manicure here for $15, and the lady (who is also the owner), did a fantastic job. Best French tip I've had yet. I haven't tried out the massage chairs or the pedicure treatment, but that'll definitely be next. There only seemed to be 2-3 people working the store when I went on Saturday, though, so they had to turn some walk-ins away. But they do accept them. Definitely make an appointment. Parking is hard to find, since it's WeHo, but there is street parking available. The owner (a cute Vietnamese lady) told me there's free parking in the back after 5pm on weekdays and all day on the weekend. That would've saved me some time driving around Santa Monica looking for parking. I'm' definitely going back here. Now that I look at my nails, I feel extra joyful!! read more

It took almost 40 minutes just to get a pedicure and when she was finished, there was still visible dead skin around my nail beds. I had also come to get a fill and get my nails done but there was only one woman doing nails. After being there for an hour and 20 minutes, I went to ask how much longer until I could get my nails done and it looked like she was only halfway finished even though my friend had started her manicure around the same time that I started my pedicure. I don't have the time or patience to potentially be in a nail place for 2.5 hours just for a basic service. I used to frequent this spot after I moved to a place just around the corner. I don't expect much out of my nail salons; clean tools, courteous staff and decent service. I go to places like these instead of higher end locations because their prices are competitive and walk-ins are welcome. I have had enough bad experiences that it's time to find a new salon and give the review it deserves. I have on more than one occasion felt like I was a burden to them and had my hands/feet thrown back at me when they are done with that hand/foot, not simply released or placed back down, literally flicked back toward my direction. They are not forthright with the wait times. When I have shown up and they were busy, they tell me "oh wait 10 minutes" and I have waited almost an hour. I'd rather they just be honest and ask me to return at a much later time. On that front, it doesn't appear they honor appointments. I've seen people come in stating they had an appointment and they end up waiting upwards of 15 mins for their service (once almost an hour!). I can't say how clean their tools are as I have not had any infections here, but I also don't see many tools being removed from the sterile packaging, so that's just an observation. Finally, the "massage" that comes with their service is simply a generous slathering of lotion. Usually, a simple service mani/pedi comes with a 5 min massage and theirs is MAYBE a minute to each extremity. I won't be returning and I'm really bummed about it because I wanted this to be my go-to mani/pedi spot. read more

I have been coming here every so often over the last few years as they are in my neighborhood. I always just get a MANi-pedi; no gels, no acrylics, no colors... nada. If I'm feeling frisky I will get my nails buffed though! I can't speak to the experience of some of the other patrons below, because my feet & heels are always scrubbed (it really tickles!) when getting the pedi. I didn't even know they don't always do it allegedly. Also, if they are not terribly busy they usually will have someone working on your hands while another person works on your feet. Everyone is really nice, and there is one girl with really cool short hair that I love engaging in conversations with. It makes the experience more enjoyable. For the people below complaining about time spent waiting, I would recommend calling ahead to see if they are busy or to put your name down for a specific time which I usually do prior to going. The mani-pedi chairs have pillows and a massage machine for your neck and back.They also offer you a complimentary beverage (water, coke/diet, etc). You can find a single assigned parking space for their business in the back (enter off Harper) or meters directly in front/on Harper. They are always opening new tools to use and I notice them heavily cleaning the foot tub basin and other forms of sterilization, which I really appreciate. I believe the cost to be low considering all that is done, so it's a great bargain IMO. read more

I don't often treat myself but I got a new job and figured it was worth it since I'd have my nails done for the next 2-3 weeks. Wrong. Went out of town the next day and they began peeling off. They are quick and efficient without a lot of fluff. They do an amazing job at shaping the nail. It's meticulous work. They aren't super chatty here, but I love that. I can drop in really quick and get my nails done without having to keep up with mindless chatter. The only downside is they do like a 5 second hand massage. Seriously. It's not much, but personally the fact that my nails look on point every time I leave matters waaay more to me then a hand massage, and it's why I keep coming back.
