Came here for dinner with a friend since I had previously purchased a Yelp deal! The restaurant is quite cozy, one of the smaller sushi joints I've been to. It was a pretty slow night. I think they may have about 10 tables but it was just us and another table. We were greeted and seated immediately and our waitress asked what we'd like to drink. My friend and I got tea and water. Then she brought our complimentary miso soup and salad! The soup was average, I had three pieces of tofu and one piece of seaweed. The salad was premixed with dressing, heavy on the dressing. We ordered the mixed tempura, lobster roll, island roll & joy king roll. I was so excited to try the lobster roll because some of the other reviewers had mentioned it was amazing but it was just okay to me. It was way over sauced, it overwhelmed the roll for me. The island roll was good though, it felt like a lighter version. The joy king roll, which is baked, was like the lion king roll at other places. It was actually the smallest roll of the three. I felt like there wasn't enough sauce on that one, the salmon was kind of dry. I can't really tell how fresh the fish was because of all the sauces. The mixed tempura was just alright, it had much more breading than I'm used to having at sushi places so I found it to be extremely filling. I was STARVING when we finally got here. My GPS was giving me issues so it took awhile to get here. When our food was brought out, we realized that it was way too much for us! The island and lobster rolls were 8 pieces each! The joy king roll had 6 pieces. Then we had 6 pieces in our mixed tempura! We ended up only eating half and took the rest home. Our waitress was nice, she checked up on us several times, gave us extra ginger & refilled our tea. I understood that it was slow but I felt a bit uncomfortable with her standing so close to us (we sat near the kitchen/bar area) while she was checking on what I presumed was her phone. Like most people at Joy Sushi last night, we were there to use our Groupon. I bought the $30 for $15 deal since the $20 for $10 was sold out. And I think the restaurant made a smart decision to join Groupon because this place doesn't seem to get much business from people without the groupon...even on a Friday night. My friend and I ordered the Chirashi, Nabeyaki Udon, and Lava Flow Roll. The sashimi on the chirashi was not fresh and some of it had a strong fishy odor that was really difficult to eat. Needless to say, I did not finish it. My friend didn't like his udon noodles either. I thought the broth was okay but definitely a little bland. The Lava Flow roll was the most edible thing we ordered. It wasn't bad but the fried batter seemed soggy instead of more crunchy. However, when I brought the leftover roll home, my cousins and brother really liked it. So IF YOU MUST come here, only order the sushi rolls, which seems to be their specialty anyway...otherwise SKIPP!!! There are significantly better sushi places out there! I would give this place one star but the service was excellent. The waitresses are really nice and attentive. Been eating here for a couple of years now, the food is very consistent and the prices are decent. The staff has always been super nice and we always know what items to get that will hit the spot. Sunshine roll, chirashi combo and the spicy tuna roll with seaweed salad on top are standouts. Only one star down because it can be cramped when you sit down in the restaurant and you have to order pretty early when you get take out because they're taking a lot of orders. Joy Sushi is close by where I work. I came here a couple times for lunch and take out a few times for dinner. It is fairly small and definitely gets busy during lunch, especially on Fridays. The service is fine and the food is okay. It is nothing special but the quality is consistent and reliable. The price is not horrible but also not cheap - hence 3 stars instead of 4. Service is okay. However, they did forget to pack tempura sauce for take out order a couple times... I would return because of the proximity but will not make a special trip if I am further away. read more

We ordered takeout from here. Ever since Oh My Sushi closed, we've been looking for a replacement go-to sushi place, and we decided to try Joy Sushi. We ordered a Rainbow roll, an Ichiban roll, a Mercy roll, and a Cherry Blossom roll. It was a generous amount of food for two people, though not inexpensive by any means. All of them were very tasty, though the Mercy roll disappeared especially fast-- it was really great! Love that we can order online. I'm sure we'll be doing it again sometime soon! read more

I get there a bit early and the sushi comes out 5 min late, no big deal. I ask the waitress who brought it out to me, "No unagi sauce right?" and she said, "yes, there's no unagi sauce on it" I opened it up to eat one before heading home and yeah, it has unagi sauce all over it. We agreed that she would give me a discount on my next order so that's cool. As I was packing stuff up to go, she comes out again and says sorry, the boss says no future discounts, but we can remake it for you. Not a big deal since I'm not allergic or anything, I just never use either and throw them away. If there is something important like an allergy or something, telling them through the special instructions or comments won't work, since they seem to ignore them both. It was my coworkers and I's first time at Joy Sushi. We arrived around 11:45am and it wasn't as busy. More customers started rolling in a little after 12pm. The place is quite small, so we were lucky to get a table just moments before it got crowded. Once you grab a hold of the menu and scan through it, you'll notice that it is pretty extensive. Unless you already know what you want, it will take a few minutes to decide what to get. I ordered the baked lobster roll and it comes with miso soup and a salad! I have never been to a sushi restaurant where a miso soup and salad comes with your specialty sushi roll. Usually it comes with a bento box or lunch special. The baked lobster roll tasted great (also pictured is the baked salmon roll my coworker ordered). Earlier, I was thinking of ordering 2 rolls in case I wasn't full, but I'm glad that I only ordered 1 roll. This lunch combination was fulfilling (almost put me in a food coma). Next time, I might just have to order 2 rolls, so I can try other ones. Additionally, I also have to mention the service. The people working here had positive energy and were very polite. They waited on us in a timely manner and would occasionally check to see how we're doing and if things were okay. We've been back a few times since my initial review, which reminds me not to write something until a few visits. The soup has been piping hot, and we ordered some different items which have been very flavorful. Vegetable Roll with mushroom avocado and cucumber, Crunch Roll with crab meat, shrimp, crunchy tempura bits, cucumber and spicy unagi sauce, and Bay Bridge, California roll topped with avocado, were all delicious. I had been craving for sushi all day and I was looking for a new place to try. Happy to find this place with good rating. It was busy on Tues night at about 6:30pm. Good sign. Service is friendly but slow. You have to call them each time for tea/water refill/order more food.if you order sushi it's even slower. Only one sushi chef. We ordered a couple of udon (beef and tempura) and variety of sushi like samurai, megabyte, spicy scallops, fish cracker (forgot the name) and another one that has candy in its name. By the time udon has been served and consumed, our sushi just arrived but not all of them. It ended up some of us watched the other ate first and take turn later. Udon soup is good but on the sweet size. The same with the sushi, creamy due to too much mayo and thus over powering the sushi taste. Overall experience is okay. read more

This place is pretty close to my work, so it's an obvious choice on days when I don't have time to pack a lunch. I like how Joy Sushi partners with OrderAhead, and it's simple enough to put in a pick-up order and avoid the line on busy weekdays. I've tried their sake sashimi lunch ($15.95). Note that Joy Sushi's website menu is outdated and erroneously states that it comes with rice, soup, and salad (which I was disappointed to find that it doesn't). The OrderAhead menu is more up-to-date. You get about 12 pieces of salmon sashimi. I thought this was decent tasting, although the slices of sashimi are cut on the thinner side. I've found salmon to be one of the more forgiving types of sashimi; it's such a fatty and flavorful piece of fish that even lower quality sushi places can usually pull it off. I still prefer Sushi Tomi for sushi in the area, but this made for a quick and convenient workday lunch, and I have no complaints. read more

Ordered "k-ramen" and was severely disappointed. I was told it was "Korean style ramen" but it ended up being literally a pack of instant noodles with shredded carrots on top. Neither the broth nor noodles were homemade. It's pretty sad that a restaurant with good food would bother to serve something like this for $9. Was there with my mom, who ordered a bento, and our dishes took over 30 minutes to arrive. There were only 3 other customers there before us so I don't know why it took so long to heat instant noodles and cook a bento meal. The waiter brought us a free side of edemame after 20 minutes, but it was still a long wait for something that takes 10-15 minutes at other restaurants. After I complained about the instant ramen, the waiter talked to the boss and was able to swap out my order for another dish, waiving the fee of the ramen. The new rice bowl came in 10 minutes (despite the restaurant now being fully crowded) and was really good; I just wish that type of service was what we received the first time. Came in for s late lunch/early dinner during the week. This is a tiny tucked away restaurant off of Middlefield Rd and Whitman in a short strip mall row, just behind Carl's Jr. Upon entering through the opened doors, we were greeted and asked to chose our table, so we did. The dining area is very tiny, maybe 30 ppl capacity, maybe. As you walk in, you see the counter. Place was not full but a few Japanese speaking guests were on cellphone conversations and somewhat loud. It was a one sided conversation via earbuds so I'm sure the talker didn't realize how loud he was. For me, it was a bit annoying and wish the owner, manager or staff could have addressed that irritation, as a standard courtesy But let's move on shall we? ... my dining partner ordered a standard bento box with 2 mains and the standard miso soup, salad, rice plus tempura. Dining partner said said it was pretty good. 4/5 was the rating. I was so in the mood for Tonkotsu ramen, however was told they don't have miso, shoyu or shio ramen but they had a spicy ramen called Shin Ramen. I said sure I'll try that, but I asked for it to not be so spicy like mild spice ness, please. The young lad was very nice and accommodating to my one request... YAY! My ramen arrived just in time cuz I was starvin' like Marvin. The bowl was placed in front with hues of red swirls, maybe 1 or 2 veggies and ramen noodles piled like a mound. That was the end of my "joy":The aroma reminded me of the foil pack of dry seasoning in the dry INSTANT ramen packets for .20 each (5/$1.00 bundles). The ramen noodles was not like traditional ramen houses where it's both chewy and yet al dente. Noodles in this ramen was over boiled, mushy and became softer as it sat in the pool of foil seasoned water. Imho it was a disappointment. I mentioned to staff and received a blank look, almost like it's known the INSTANT ramen is mediocre. They should probably remove from menu cuz one can go to Dollar Tree and buy a few college day dry INSTANT ramen packages. They didn't offer to remove from table and replace with another item or take off the tab, even though I took a few slurps and bowl was still full. 2 stars cuz bento box was good with a 4 star but ramen is a zero. Hits: yummy salad dressing, hot miso upon arrival. Fresh watermelon triangles at end of meal. Our groupon was $30 worth, so we ordered: Grilled Mussels Hunter Attack Ichiban Roll Spicy Scallop Roll Dynamite Roll Chicken Karaage The mussels were way overcooked, what a shame!!! The meat shrunk to a tiny tiny piece, it was dry and chewy although the FLAVOR of the SAUCE was delicious!!!! Creamy, with a bit of heat, sweet and savory, yummmm! We licked every single drop of the orange sauce!!! 5 pieces small ovecooked mussels for $5.95, I certainly had better ones elsewhere. Hunter attack was a surprise hit! Although it was an "appetizer" it took them forever to serve it.. we basically got this after we finished eating all our sushi and mussels!! GOOD DEAL though, since it came in 6 HUGE pieces of jalapeno stuffed with spicy tuna and cream cheese battered in tempura mix and deep fried!!! They sprinkled some of their delicious orange sauce on top along with the sweet teriyaki like sauce. If you like spicy and fried food, you should order this dish $5.95 The sushi rolls were nothing to brag about!!! LOTS OF RICE!!! (kinda reminds me of sushi made in a chinese buffet with a LARGER size - MORE RICE!!!) not enough fish and eel AND the fish and scallops didn't look fresh! We were really disappointed! Chicken karaage reminds me of the crispy chicken from Tapioca Express without the spicy powder :). I liked the flavor but they over-fried the chicken that the meat was not juicy anymore. Unreliable if you order food and expect to eat it. This is not the first time it happens when make a takeout order and the pickup times are totally off, raging to 30-45 minutes in the best case to 90+ minutes of wait on a bad day. The food is good but the delays ruin the experience, specially if you have visits waiting at home. This is specifically related to pickup, I think it's better to plan and assume a 30 min+ delay and arrive accordingly to avoid wasting time waiting. read more

Warning: this place does not look very pretty. Looks more like a takeout place than a restaurant. That being said, it's small and the wait staff are pretty attentive. Samurai roll (tuna/eel/cucumber/crab inside, salmon/avocado/tobiko on top) was not bad, but I've had the same at the San Mateo branch and I think it was better there. Mercy roll (CA roll + salmon/tuna/tobiko on top) was okay, think the crab could've used a little less mayo. and a bit more 'special sauce' for both rolls would've been nice!
