I went into Joyper's today looking for Birkenstock's in two colors. I called before hand and the nice lady on the phone checked to see if they were in stock and put them on hold for me. I shop there a few times a year. I am not very fond of shopping and I like to go there because they have great customer service and it's never too crowded. I was approached a few times by different employees making sure I found what I needed. I ended up purchasing two pairs of shoes and they even gift wrapped them for me free of charge. They are definitely one of my favorite places to shop. read more

Manager is absolutely terrible! I have had more than 1 bad experience with him. Got a pair a shoes from a sales associate, sales associate said we could receive a discount because it was the display (very common practice), went to check out and a different sales associate had to go back to check with "the manager". Was gone for about 10 minutes and now that sales associate said that "the manager" said that he wouldn't honor what the sales associate told us. He never even came out of the back to talk to us. So very rude. Either train your associates better or get a manager with some bedside manner. DON'T SHOP HERE. read more

I've been shopping at Joy-Per's for several years, but after my last experience there, I will not be returning. I purchased two pairs of shoes for work mid February to which one pair is already destroyed after 4 months of wear and the other brand new pair are unable to be returned for store credit. I was initially told by the manager that depending on whether the brand new shoes had 1. Never been worn and 2. Were still an item they had in stock, that I would be able to return them for store credit (even if past the 30 days of purchase). I was then informed by another employee who allegedly spoke with the manager yet again that I would not be able to return them for store credit as it was past 30 days. Additionally, I informed the staff that the reason I never returned the other pair of shoes to begin with is because of the recent global pandemic forcing a shelter in place order. I have been in customer service for 16 years, and would like to tell the owners of this business that this policy seems terribly unreasonable, especially considering current events. I would understand if the shoes I purchased were no longer being carried in store, but I cannot seem to understand why I can't make a simple exchange for store credit for shoes that are currently in stock and have never been worn. read more

Definitely felt like I was being told "if you're not going to buy anything you should just leave" I was browsing around the store for maybe about 30 minutes , and I was told their is a time limit of 20 mins in the store . I didn't think that was fair since I had to wait in line before going in. I try to shop Joy Pers a lot but cannot ever seem to find something to love here. Their prices are really good (High end shoes and boots, mid-grade clothes) but nothing seems to work together and the styles are either teenage girl or sassy elderly lady. Now I love both of these groups of women, but most of us do not fall into those categories. Last time I was there they had two nice tops on mannequins, but when I asked where they were on the racks the sales girl said that was the last one. I finally asked her to take them.off the dummies so I could try them on. She honestly did not think of that! Anyway all I found was a pair of suede-like leggings. I wore them.for a few hours the next day but they would not stay up and I kept having to dodge into dark corners to hitch them up. I took them back. I have no problem paying $35 for a pair of nice leggings, but they need to be wearable at least! The reason I gave them four stars is that my kids usually have good luck finding shoes here, and they are nice to my teenagers. read more

Sorry to say, but this is a store that is waay past its prime. I remember my mom buying my new school shoes here when I was a kid back in the 70s-80s. Perhaps it was a better store then? Its a small family store, and I try to support those...that *deserve* it. This one's off my list. Spotty selection, not too knowledgeable or helpful staff, and ask for a TON of personal info when you need to be rung up, even if you have been there before and they already have it! I have always loved the shoe selection in this store, good names, comfortable and stylish women's shoes. My husband bought me a pair of Brighton ear rings for my birthday and did not notice that there is a sign posted that states ear rings are non returnable. Long story short, I wanted to exchange the ear rings for a new pair of shoes and the store personnel just said "sorry, these are non returnable". So I am upset, the store has lost a customer and a shoe sale. I do plan to contact Brighton headquarters because this is not a Brighton policy and I don't believe this store should be allowed to represent Brighton. I LOVE Brighton and have never left a corporate store anything less than completely satisfied. If you do shop here, don't buy anyone a gift because if they don't like it, they are out of luck. read more

Be careful always take the box with you, I bought a pair of shoes which were uncomfortable and could not return they were 125.00. I had tried them at the store then went home tried them out and realized they were uncomfortable. Maura Rodriguez told me I can't exchange them without the box I told them to keep it. The staff seemed knowledgeable, although they were very pushy with trying to get you to buy other products. The store is old and outdated. I think they wanted to keep the 70s feel to it? I feel like I grow 30 years walking into this place. This area should definitely have a better store to purchase shoes. I think they cater more to an older, much older crowd. Its been in Salinas forever, although I don't see this place lasting much longer with the way they're running things. It took me about 2 and half hours to get my nephews uniform...how could it possibly take that long to type in his name and get his measurements? My background: 4 years retail experience at a major department store part of that as a manager for a name brand cosmetic company. I came to make my first ever and last purchase from this store today. I bought two pairs of Toms, and took about 5 minutes of the salesgirl's time. It was ok that I had to wait for someone to come help me. It looked like only 3 people were working the whole store. Allie the cashier was very nice. My issue was with the person that according to her name tag was supposed to be a manger. I didn't catch her name since I was too busy listing to her and staring at the manager part of her name tag in amazement. The reason: I asked what the return policy was because I have never shopped here before and wanted to know what would happen if they turned out to be a defective pair. The Caucasian older lady pretending to be a manger rudely informed me Toms are a fashion item and it would be based on their judgment if they would be returned or not. OK so that would be the sum total of your return policy nice one, however, Allie kindly let me know the full policy that I do have the right to return the shoes in 30 days if unworn. Thank you lord someone that was listing and understand what I was saying. If I want to be talked down to by some snotty white lady I will go to a Bloomingdales thank you very much. Great experience. Frank waited on me (ask for him - he's a pro!). they have a fancy machine that you stand on that helps assess your particular foot. He spent time assessing, educating and understanding my needs and was able to very quickly find the perfect shoe for me in his inventory. He was not afraid to recommend one but gave me a choice. I never felt like I was being "sold" - no pressure at all! I went for their athletic shoes but was impressed with their ugg collection. Great shoes/merch you don't find very often in many places. Me and my mother like to come here for work shoes but we waited over 10 minutes to receive any service alone at the back of the store until we went and requested it. Lady was lovely and thorough but quickly left once our selection had been made and said she'd leave our shoes at the front counter. We make our way up and they put a box of shoes in a bag, ask us to figure out who had helped them so they could receive credit for the sale, and rang us up. We go home and the next day, come to find out they gave us nothing even close to the shoes I had requested. I don't have days off often, so it was a huge inconvenience to have to go back because they didn't bother to ask us or show us the shoes they were charging us for. On top of that, my mother goes back for me and ONCE MORE she receives no service for a long period of time, and is made to feel like WE picked the wrong shoes, is given attitude and is CHARGED MORE. I work retail just like these guys do. I get it, you get busy, a lot of people with a lot of needs but I know its sure as heck required where I work to be sympathetic with customers when the STORE has made the mistake and take extra measures to ensure they are walking out happy but instead here we got disinterest, long waits, and no appropriate solution. I think Ill follow the advice of another reviewer and find these brands online and forget about ever stepping foot in this store again. Its a shame because you really do have nice merchandise but the complete lack of service is not worth it. read more

This store has the rudest, most condescending, sarcastic low class manager I have encountered in my lifetime shopping experience. I put lots on money in there and got insulted on more than one occasion. The owner is very nice but the female getto manager owns him. They have a few nice things in there but are very overpriced. Childrens Keens you can find better deals a REI, ladies shoes I have purchased some of the same ones in Marshall's and Nordstrom Rack for a fraction of the price. I will never step foot in there again and feel sorry for all those inexperienced shoppers that do. My advice is buy your Toms from Nordstrom Rack and some stuff online and stop throwing your money away. read more

Parents went to the store to purchase shoes for my mom who is diabetic and Maura Rodriguez who helped them said that the shoes were meant for someone like her and that they had guranteed. When my mom wore them in the house to try them out she soon discovered that they were too tight and hurt her feet. I her daughter went into the store to get the refund on the shoes and the ASM and the SM did not want to cooporate in any way, no refund because the shoes were "worn" from the bottom, but the rest of the shoe was spotless. Then I who works for a company that SALES SHOES! did not want to exchange them for anythingg. These shoes are suppose to be for diabetics and have support for my mom what was I suppose to do with them. Then after the SM had the audacity to say to return them into the company and write a note saying why I wanted a refund. Worst place ever, never shopping there again, and ill make sure to tell my family and friends and others to not shop there if what they expect is great customer servce and a great experience because they are all full of lies. read more

What a waste of my lunch hour. I went to Joy Pers to try to find a pair of running shoes, a pair of work shoes, and a pair of casual tennis shoes. The staff was extremely slow to assist me with my selections (about 20 minutes before I was helped) Of course the woman checked for them individually instead of all at once so I had to wait even longer, and then they didn't have my size in ANY of them. And I wear an 8, which is not an unusual size. I did buy a change purse, and when I brought it to the counter I had to stand there for a while before the girl sitting at the computer asked whether I needed help. As if there could be any other reason for me to be standing there. Last time I was there a man was working the floor, and when I arrived at 5:30 (they close at 6) he started talking about what a "late start" I'd gotten (as if normal people don't get off work at 5 PM), implying that they were closing soon. Very rude staff all around. I will never go there again. I have learned my lesson after years of leaving that store unsatisfied. I work near this store and I actually won a gift certificate so I decided to go in. Mind you this was against my better judgement since the store looks totally run down and gross. You can't even enter through the front door which I find totally odd. Anyway, the store had a lot of stuff in it and a lot of old lady clothes and accessories. I ended up finding a nice pair of boots. They were overpriced and didn't have my size. They said they would take down my info and call me when they came in stock. No one ever called. Needless to say I still had my gift certificate so I went in again this week to use it. A sales lady did try to help me and this time I wanted flip flops. They didn't have my size in the color I wanted and so I ended up getting another color. Things are WAY overpriced and overall the staff is a bit odd and awkward. I won't go back. I think they only way they stay in business is because they sell TOMs and Uggs and all the teens wear those....oh and the Saas old lady shoes they sell. I won't be returning and don't recommend it. I haven't shopped here in years. I'm in search of good quality shoes, with good arch support... aka: old lady shoes. Sigh. I admit, that I've been shopping at Zappos.com because I HATE shopping. It was time for me to go into a shoe store, to be properly fitted and to actually try shoes on. I'm on vacation, so I made the trip to Joy-Per's. When I first arrived, it took a good five minutes before anyone came to ask if I needed help. I was just about ready to leave, when a sales clerk approached me. My sales clerk was a young lady, who was as sweet as can be (Erica). She patiently brought out different styles while I made a careful selection. They do have a great assortment of shoes ($100.00 and up) which are a bit on the expensive side. But, I've learned, you have to expect to pay that kind of money, if you want a quality shoes. Their prices are the same as at Zappo's shoes. I'm paying the price of wearing cheap platform shoes and stilettos, in my youth because I now have fallen arches. I should have listened to my mama! My only complaint is that their assortment of sizes are very limited. Be prepared to compromise. I used to own a uniform/shoe store, and when times were tough my inventory was minimal. Maybe that's what's happening here. Still, it's feels good to support a local mom and pop merchant. I'll be back. read more

This place has a good selection of shoes. It's a hit or miss on their customer service, sometimes you'll get staff who are very helpful, other times you'll get staff who are useless and unnecessarily sassy. They make returning items nearly impossible. And do not give gifts from here because exchanging for a different size is impossible, even though they put their JP stamp on the bottom of boxes. So... Overall, I would say it's worth it to drive somewhere else. read more

Basically this store is behind the times for returning to a credit card. I am from out of town and was visiting family in Salinas. I went in on Saturday to find a pair of shoes for my grandbaby for Easter. The selection was poor in the size I was looking for. I settled on a pair that had Velcro. Unfortunately, we found the shoes did not fit properly and was unable to return them due to the holiday. I had my mom try to return them today with the receipt and was told I could only exchange them or get store credit. I had to settle on a $42 store credit. Who knows when that will get used. My family has been shopping here for 30+ years and I'm sure we've spent thousands of dollars in shoes there. If you are from out of town, I would suggest not shopping here. Go to a major store where you can return in any town. I am so disappointed in their policy. Honestly, Joypers should have found a way to satisfy a lifetime Salinas resident (my mother).
