Potato Kimcheese Lumpia, sour cream + onion, chive $12 Four little fried lumpia rolls. Tasty and a bit spicy, heat temperature, hot af. Liked the dipping sauce, certainly unusual to go with a Koreandish (like a tzatziki), but make total sense. I felt the rolls themselves were just slightly left over in the fryer too long. Geoduck fried rice, seaweed, pork rind $17 Good sized portion to split between two or maybe three people. I enjoyed the overall texture of the dish, but the seasoning lacked excitement. Chinese broccoli, walnut pesto $12 Just your basic Chinese broccoli really, but the walnut pesto was very very tasty. "that" short rib steak, kalbi, grilled kimchi, 6oz. $28 Server suggested medium rare. I think medium would have been perfect, but I still very much enjoyed this dish. The marbling and flavor in the meat has that real umami kind of spark. Very good! Five spiced duck confit, bbq beans, brussel sprout kimchi $23 My favorite of the night. I could really taste the five spices, and the duck was tender and moist (sorry if you hate that word), pulled apart with such ease, the beans were perfectly cooked, and what a cool surprise on the sprouts kimchi. When I heard Joule had a different themed brunch every month and April's was Philippines, I quickly made a reservationand bookmarked it on my calendar! My friends and I came here on a Sunday, as we made a reservation for the late afternoon. In fact, I strongly recommend making reservations, as the place was packed with large parties. Everyone was taking advantage of the $19 brunch buffet, where in addition to your entree of choice off the standard menu, you can help yourself to an assortment of the themed brunch. It's an awesome deal, and what I mostly love is that you can try different kinds of foods. As a (half) Filipina, I was impressed by the buffet assortment for the Philippines theme. They had several different items that strayed from the typical Filipino food that you'd normally find like lumpia or adobo. Instead, it was fusion-like combination of native Filipino products with a modern twist such as the Pinkabet Salad, which is a northern/regional dish of the Philippines, comprised of different veggies and squashes in a shrimp sauce. Or the Calamansi Bar, which my friends found similar to a lemon bar, but they use the calamansi juice which is common in the Philippines...with toasted coconut. Superb! I found that it gave people a better understanding of Filipino food outside the box, which is mostly what I liked about the buffet. For my entree I ordered the Joule Breakfast, which came with a hunky piece of bacon, two eggs, scallion hash, toast and a butter and fruit marmalade on the side. It had a nice combination of sweet and salty, with the marmalade and glazed bacon. Fantastic meal, unique menu in an intimate restaurant. The service was sweet and helpful too! We started with the scallion pancakes which were a unique plating. I love scallion pancakes so would probably enjoy any accompaniment but the creme fraiche, salmon roe and what tasted like chipotle caviar (!!) was tops! Then we had the burrata and asparagus, loved the sauce that came with it. The bone marrow had great flavor and texture, the cilantro, onion and lime was a perfect addition. The kale steak was very tender and great with the sriracha sauce. The top dish for me though was the spicy rice cake! The texture was a complete surprise and so delicious. Chewy and smooth but firm and the chorizo mixed in was full of flavor! I also loved the kalbi burger, calling it juicy feels like an understatement it was oozing with flavor and moisture! For dessert we did the rhubarb tart and it was all kinds of fantastic I definitely recommend trying! We got to sit at the bar and watch all the action, which was kinda fun and also slightly tortuous if you're hungry and watching all the meals ordered ahead of you being whisked off to other tables. I was looking forward to dining at Joule, which gets national recognition. Korean culinary traditions and preparation are driving kitchens from coast to coast, and Joule reputedly is at the pinnacle of this style of cooking. We chose to eat at the kitchen counter, and I immediately noticed no one in the kitchen was smiling or seemed happy. There appeared to be an umbrella of sadness over the entire restaurant. Suddenly, a GPS voice was speaking behind me. Huh? did I hit the wrong button on my phone? I spun around and noticed a young woman speaking, facing our direction. Realizing she was a server and possibly human, I paid attention to the words, although there was no eye contact. She spoke in a monotone, saying all the correct things, without displaying an iota of human frailty. Seattle dot comers had created the perfect robot. I was astonished! She continued the recitation, and all I could do was just nod. It was an alternate universe. Our spicy rice cake and potato lumpia appetizers were interesting, but not really delicious. The steaks were excellent, with the short rib steak taking first place. I initially ordered the Wagyu steak which was good, but I was still hungry, so I asked for the bavette steak and bread for dessert. Finally, I was full. Throughout our meal, the robotic server was utterly professional, but fittingly, she never smiled, engaged, or showed any emotion. She was the perfect .com creation. Our finally bill, with a couple of cocktails and a couple of glasses of wine, was $213 with a 20% tip included. That was akin to what we paid in Paris at Michelin starred restaurants. Nuff said! This place has really left a bad taste in my mouth. A restaurant I once loved has become as mediocre as an airport food stop. The drinks have no intentionality and the food is subpar at best. We had the rice cakes with chorizo, which were highly recommended. The flavor was decent but the rice cakes were stale and hard in places. The salmon was actually pretty decent, though the sides added nothing to the overall flavor and felt out of place. On the upside, the service was excellent and I appreciate the staff being accommodating to food sensitivities and generally very warm. There's a lot to be said for improvement, and it seems that this place has been neglected in the creativity and quality department lately. It's sad to see a restaurant that used to be so delicious and innovative in decline. They suggests you eat family-style at this restaurant, which was good I suppose is good because the portion sizes were rather small so you probably wouldn't be full with just an entree. The service was excellent and the ambiance was casual. Both the steaks and duck were cooked well and flavorful. My group agreed that the bovette was the better of the 2. We booked a Mother's Day reservation to take my partner's Korean mother visiting from out of town and underwhelming was I felt afterwards. With such great reviews and this being our first "nice" dining out experience in a while, we were expecting the food to be spectacular - but that wasn't the case. With there being three of us, our server recommended we order at least 4-5 dishes that are served family-style. Plates are on the pricier end. My partner's mother does prefer more traditional Asian dishes but we decided to try and give her a new experience. Scallion pancake w/salmon roe creme fraiche (1/5) - as basic as you can get. Not worth $14 when you can order this at Dough Zone for $3 or make it at home and it tastes WAY better. The sauce did not amplify the thin, limp pancake served to us. Bone marrow with spicy anchovy leek butter (4/5) - my partner and I throughly enjoyed this dish. It was flavorful, the marrow was perfectly melty, spreadable, and paired well on the burnt toast it was served with. Pea vine with preserves lemon and almond butter (4/5) - everyone in our party enjoyed this dish. I've only had pea vines doused in garlic but was surprised to find how good they tasted on the sweeter end. Do I think the portion size was worth $12? Absolutely not - would feel better if this portion size was priced at half the price. Short-rib kalbi steak (3/5) - we eat our fair share of kalbi and paying $28 for the minimal quantity was cringeworthy. My partner's mother mentioned that the kimchi was old b/c of how sour it tasted but not many are going to notice unless they make it at home. Nothing was out of the ordinary for this dish - many basic Korean components placed nicely on a plate. Our steak wasn't tough as some have previously mentioned but it wasn't superior quality. Grilled halibut with asparagus and browned butter (3/5) - again, not worth $29, but was one of the better-tasting dishes that we ordered. Flavor combo was nice, but our fish just tasted mushy which was a deal breaker for me. None of us were fighting to finish this dish. Joule box (5/5) - this was the only thing that stood out the entire night. I would maybe go back for this if I were in the area. The brûléed grapefruit paired with the creamy, coconut tapioca on the bottom, and crunch of the toasted coconut flakes on the side was fantastic. I ate majority of this. Service was pretty good overall. The reservation after us cancelled so they were accommodating to our time request. It did take a second for someone to greet us at the entry but when we were seated, they provided ample but not overbearing attention. Didn't feel rushed during our time at the restaurant. Our server was nice and helpful. Spacing between tables was $6 and felt comfortable. Overall ambiance was comfortable, hipster, modern, yet you can dress up (nice-casual) or dress down (maybe not sweats.. but I'd come in yoga pants) and still feel like you fit in. Came here for my birthday dinner and had such a lovely time. The staff were so nice and even accommodated my friend's dad calling in to cover our dessert. So sweet! The food was all good but the "must" dishes were the smoked tofu, bone marrow (YUM), cheesy cauliflower, and the short rib steak which name I am forgetting but it's THAT steak. Everything on the menu is shareable except maybe the burger.. They didn't require proof of vaccination and it's kind of on an honor system, which was pretty disappointing. Most restaurants I've been to recently have required proof of vaccination which helps us feel more comfortable in the indoor spaces. We still had a good time though and it didn't feel too crowded inside. Overall, a great experience! read more

The rice cakes were good and loved that the texture of it had a crunchy/burnt part with the chewiness of it. Mackerel was cooked perfectly as the skin on the outside was crispy and flavors with it went so well. THE BAD: The bone marrow was flavorful but it wasn't the best, just thought it didn't stand out compared to the other dishes we ordered. It's a very nice outdoor flowing into indoor place. I have been here twice for dinner and I have enjoyed their food. They serve family style sharing plates. Everything on the menu looks delicious and their dishes are on the smaller side, so it's a good idea to do family-style meals. My friend and I ordered 3 dishes to share. Beef Tartare: Meat was well-seasoned and served at a chilled temperature. The vegetables and sauce helped round out the dish. We had taken to Yelp to find our dinner spot for tonight and narrowed it down to three choices. Joule was the one we thought looked best from the pictures and we know we liked the area. This was a very cute space, which is the main reason it's getting even two stars. It was very clean, well decorated, and the staff was polite. I very much enjoyed the aesthetic of the restaurant as a whole. The menu had a lot of things we couldn't pronounce and hardly anything on the menu was truly of Korean cuisine. A couple dishes had kimchi in them in some shape or form, so that's the closest I'd say anything was aligned with actual Asian food. Our server suggested that we order all at once so that the sharing plates and entree items would come out closer together, because some parties had complained about the gaps between courses. We took his advice and ordered all food in one go, but the time between the first and second starters was about 10 minutes and THEN it took almost 45 minutes to get the burger and the steak. The restaurant was probably 90% full so we understood the wait time but would've appreciated more notice/check-in. The food itself was extremely... odd. I mean, we knew that it was going to be a unique palate experience, for sure. Out of the 5 dishes we shared, the only one that was above decent was the 12 oz steak. I ate one of the figs off of the beet dish and whatever it was coated in has given me an allergic reaction, my tongue is still tingling as I type this. The final bill was close to $200, with automatic 20% gratuity included. I don't mind the auto grat but we left having spent more money than we should've on this food, partially empty stomachs, and an unhappy mouth. We will not be returning. read more

I was recommended Joule for brunch from a coworker and I made reservations for a table of 5 on Saturday afternoon. There's plenty of street parking for those that are looking for places to eat on the same street and free! But you may have to walk down a block or two... Anyway! We got there on time, got seated right away and the only odd thing that the hostess mentioned was that the food would be a bit slower since there was a new cook in the kitchen... oh okay then... The way that the menu works is that for $20, you get the buffet and any one entrée on the list (plus $3 if you want the steak or waffle on the list). If you don't want the buffet, you can just get the entrée for $15. I got the chicken steak waffle and my boyfriend got the standard breakfast. The rest of our table got the black congee, the omelette and the grits. Speaking of just the entrees, I thought the chicken steak and waffles were probably one of the best things on the table... larger portion (which I didn't finish) and the steak was a bit overdone (I got rare). The grits were my personal favorite with the Chinese sausage and just flavorful enough. I would probably get that one next time. As for the buffet, this is a rotating menu for the month and as it's October - everything was Halloween themed. I thought it was cute and all the food was prepared well. My favorite was the beet hummus and the chips they provided were great too. They had a cold rice and vegetable dish which was - meh and the a hot vegetarian pasta which was also decent. The sweet desserts included a pumpkin cake, rice krispies and a passion fruit candy corn mousse (which was probably the best dessert). I thought the table was creative but nothing rave worthy. They have pretty high turnover at the buffet station though so the food is always hot or fresh and new. GET THE GEODUCK FRIED RICE (5/5) - Yes, I know. There isn't that much protein in the actual dish. However, the rice is still so flavorful and has a great sense of umami when you bite into it. It was the highlight of my night. OXTAIL (5/5) - YESSS!!! This is a must. The oxtail falls off the bone. The rice it's served over is in this sauce that's savory so it cuts the fatty-ness of the meat in just the right way. Worth it. BAVETTE STEAK (4/5) - Great sear, great cook. But nothing too special. But execution was spot on. BLACK COD (2/5) - I love black cod so much so it pains me to give such a low review. But the cod was just overpowered by the super salty sauce on it. Thank God the oxtail came out at the same time. It wasn't too bad bc I would go back and forth between bites but honestly, otherwise the black cod was overpowered by the sauce in an almost non edible way. Black cod however, when cooked properly by itself is sooooo melt in your mouth delicious, so worth it if you don't mind the first step of scraping off some of the sauce. TARTARE (4/5) - one of the best tartares I've had. The mentaiko takes it to the next level. So delicious! I've been here multiple times for brunch and keep going back. This is one of those places that I tell visitors to seattle to not miss out on. Their brunch buffet features different ethnic bites, and, for ~$20 you get 1 entree and access to the buffet. The last time I went, it was Bahamian themed, and it was such a treat to have so many options and new flavors in addition to the entree. This is why I never get tired of visiting Joule, because each experience there is slightly different! The kimchi stew is tasty, a good asian-American fusion dish and has a nice combination of kale, ground meat that goes perfectly with the crusty bread. The real star is the chicken and waffles though. The black sesame waffle is mild, but flavorful and the chicken is crunchy and juicy. Would recommend making a reservation if you want a table, but if you're okay with sitting at the bar overlooking their open kitchen, I've typically been able to walk in and wait no more than 15 minutes, even on weekends. read more

Very very average to poor food with very bad service. We ordered a cauliflower dish. And the first time it come to the table, the fried cauliflower is still super frozen in the middle. We asked to redo the dish. 5 min later another plate of frozen cauliflower is served. We told the waitress we will just cancel it. Than the other waitress came with our entree. She especially said to us, this is our halibut with cold mussels. This mussel is prepared cold, so it is supposed to be cold. Not sure why she need to emphasize this so much after we cancel our cauliflower. But the attitude is definitely not good. Other than that all dishes are very average and and just doesn't make sense to be that price. I mean a bowl of fried cauliflower with Indonesian curry sauce that cost 14 dollar still uses frozen cauliflower as an ingredient. What do you expect? read more

We flew into Seattle and had reservations to try Joule on our first day. Brandie was very helpful with our reservation since our flight was delayed and we needed a later time; she was able to help us change our timeslot which was very nice! My friend and I each had the Short Rib Steak and shared a Spicy Rice Cake and Bone Marrow. Everything was delicious! However, the kimchi here does not seem to be fresh...Unfortunately, my friend became sick with mild food poisoning and threw up the kimchi a few hours after our meal. We had been eating the exact same things throughout the whole day and the only difference was the kimchi from this restaurant. Not sure how fresh the kimchi was, so I would take caution with that. read more

This is my third time at Joule and it never disappoints. Tonight my husband and I made a reservation for 2 and we were seating at a quaint section in the back. First, the drinks were magically delicious! I ordered a pineapple tequila drinks and my husband ordered a call me old fashion. He says "it's the most balanced take I've had on an old fashion - perfect" and I agree. Everything we tasted was delicious but the stand outs were the Rice cakes and the rib eye - absolutely fabulous - no more to say. I definitely recommend. read more
