I had a very expensive Panasonic AG_W1 Multi-System VCR that plays and transfers Pal, Ntsc, and Secam tapes. They simply don't make these anymore so what was I going to do with the 100's of PAL tapes I still have with good stuff on them? The rare throwback store where quality of service matters over money. These places are going the way of the pager and typewriter stores so let's keep them in business -- please! Oh, -- it's RIGHT next door to the best BBQ in town - Maple Block. The gentleman who owns "Joseph E" in Culver City is a kind, courteous, and extremely knowledgable guy named NED - just so you know - so dont call there and ask for "Joseph". Whoever he is - or was - the guy to speak with is Ned. Ned is what I would describe as a brilliant electronics surgeon - I brought him my vintage Pioneer SX-1050 (one of their great "built like a truck" vintage receivers circa 1978) after a power surge sent the unit into protection mode, and there it got stuck...Ned performed his diagnosis and repaired not just the protection circuit issue, but he also repaired a number of other issues (he replaced all the light bulbs with new obsolete stock ORIGINAL bulbs (as opposed to easy way out, which is putting LED lights to replace the original bulbs - this is exactly what another electronics repair shop in LA did when I brought another piece of vintage stereo equipment to them) as well as replacing a few bad capacitors. All this at what I would call a very fair price. Ned's shop is filled with ALL kinds of electronics - but I got the feeling when he saw my vintage Pioneer receiver, he couldnt wait to dive into it, like he was about to have an wonderful adventure - or about to sit down to a delicious steak dinner. He really loves vintage audio equipment - but he can probably fix your microwave oven, your television, your vacuum cleaner, or your old VCR from the 90's I suppose...but I believe his passion is vintage audio - amplifires, turntables, etc. Anyway, whatever your problem with any electronics equipment, I can assure you THIS is the place to go. About a year ago I called him with a question regarding our Yamaha stereo components system. He guided me over the phone. Today I picked up the same Yamaha stereo system that he repaired, where he cleaned the three CD tray, replaced components that were faulty, replace the drive belt and clean the laser, among other things. Now we have a quality AND working stereo system that is not made today for a fraction of the cost. Stay with quality products and have Ned repair them. You won't be disappointed. So my Italian made range vent Hood above my stove went out over a year ago. Thanks to the pandemic, I've been able to get at some of these repairs in the house finally. When I bought the house I got acclimated with most of my appliances. But the vent range hood I overlooked getting familiar with. The first thing you should know the metal screens that come out, need to be put in the dishwasher every now and then. 7 years of grease and usage became brand new again with one dishwasher cycle.  A vent range hood has two components, a blower and a brain made up of a circuit board with transformer diodes and capacitors. The manufacturer said this 15 year old unit does not have a replacement brain, only replacement motor. They do not repair the brain. In today's world we have disposable built-in obsolescence. A new brain and motor would have cost around $600, or brand new unit $1500 to $2000 depending. I figured I already have the thing mostly apart. I got to the brain which is the circuit board pulled it out get a quick Yelp search. And saw that E. Joseph electronics repairs had great reviews. I was soon to find out why. As an added bonus they're right next to my buddies epic barbecue restaurant Maple Block BBQ in Culver City. I went in and met Ned Joseph. Give him my circuit board he did a couple of tests with his meter, and he said, I think I know what's wrong. $45 and 24 hours later I picked it up. Went home plugged it in, and to my surprise and joy, lo and behold it's good as new :) As an added bonus, as it turns out Ned and his family know my mother's side of the family for more than 50 years. My Technics 1200MK2 had an issue with the arm lowering onto the record so I searched far and wide for a repair location that would have both the knowledge and expertise to repair this turntable. If you're looking for the old-style repair shop that either can fix most things, or if they can't, at least have enough knowledge on it to help you decide your best option for the broken item? Are you looking for someone who can repair not only recently made items, but also vintage electronics? Joseph E is that kind of place. Our PC died last night (wouldn't boot up) -- oh no! With all the scary online stories about hacking and malware being installed on your PC, I didn't want to bring in our PC to an unknown computer repair shop; as we would have to leave our PC with them and we have no idea if they would also be installing malware. So, I tried finding computer repair techs that would come on-site; in this way we can watch what they're doing with our PC. But for each of these firms, the reviews included some pretty scathing reviews. Thank goodness, I thought of calling Ned. I had still yet to actually go to his store and meet him. Of the several prior calls, he just gave me great advice so I didn't need to come in. Silly me, I didn't even realize that he also repairs PCs. I finally got to meet Ned in person too. Yea!! HAPPY ME!! NED IS AN ELECTRONICS GURU. HE IS THOROUGH, KNOWLEDGEABLE AND SOOO TRUSTWORTHY. Examples of his knowledge and trustworthiness: #1 Instead of having me bring in my TV for repair due to vertical lines on the screen, he told me just get a new TV. The TV has reached it's lifespan. That all TVs now sold only have lifespans of 5-7 yrs, depending on usage. #2 Based on his knowledge from repairing multitudes of vacuum cleaners, I asked Ned which is the best and most reliable vacuum cleaner. I then purchased the Shark Navigator. Boy, Ned was 100% correct. I absolutely LOVE this vacuum cleaner. #3 Instead of having me bring in my stainless steel cooking pot to reattach the bakelite handle, Ned told me why bakelite material cannot be refastened to the pot. #4 Ned reviewed my PC today, and didn't even charge me :) For #1, #3 and #4, above, other shops would have used the opportunity to get money from me to "assess", then tell me the item cannot be repaired. Unfortunately, Ned had to give me the bad news for our PC: PC manufacturers deliberately discontinue parts such as mothers boards forcing you to buy a new PC (aka "built-in obsolescence"). Bummer. Even so, it's a great feeling that there's someone out there like Ned: he's knowledgeable about repairing electronics, and he's wonderfully trustworthy. He's "one of the good ones". read more

HIGHLY recommend going here for all electronics you'd rather fix than replace. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my record player and I wanted to take it to someone that had experience with them. Took my Crosley Dansette series record player to Joseph E and they helped me find a new power cord because turns out mine wasn't working and was the wrong voltage. Ned explained everything to me and we searched on amazon together because I wasn't sure what to buy. He was patient and kind. Came back a few days letter to confirm everything was good to go, tested the voltage, and it worked! I might have to come back for a faulty knob but he said there was no need to fix it now and it should work fine for a while which is fine with me if it means I don't absolutely have to spend the money. My Brionvega TV thank's you! The remote control stopped working this week. One day it was working the other it was not. I noticed that the batteries were leaking fluid. Great shop of the type that you don't find much anymore. I brought I vintage Dual turntable in for evaluation and possible repair. It took a little while and a few phone calls for Ned to give me an answer and I was a little concerned about where things were headed. However, the end result exceeded my expectations. He told me that the Dual was going to take a ridiculous amount of money and time to repair. So he offered to sell me a fully restored Technics turntable instead. He subtracted the inspection fee from the extremely-reasonable sales price, gave me back the Dual that I'd brought in, and now I have a beautifully restored vintage Technics turntable. After searching and calling many places, I finally found a place that could save my vintage Sony stereo system. The CD portion of it was "spitting out" CD's without playing them. So I this place and spoke with Ned, to whom I explained the issue, and he said he'd do all he can to save my unit. And save, he did. I think it was about a week until I picked it up.
