Service truly makes or breaks the experience. Our server refused to split the bill for us (I dined with a group of 8 women, aged 40-70) despite us asking him twice. He then ignored us for close to 10 minutes until we "gave in" and charged the full meal for 8 women to 1 credit card. Josefina's unwillingness to split a bill should have been disclosed as soon as we made the reservation for 8 or sat down. The entire encounter with our server at the end of the meal left us with a bad taste in our mouths. Outside of the service, the food, drink and vibes of the dining room were lovely. My husband and I decided to check out Josefina for our anniversary and wow, we loved every bite! We got there just as the doors opened at 5. We walked in and were impressed with the ambiance and decor - modern and romantic! The service was outstanding! The waiter helped us decide what to order and it was amazing food. We started with meatballs that were outstanding. I ordered the zucchini lasagna and it was so good. My husband ordered the pork chop and it was seriously the best pork chop ever made: I'm not even a pork chop fan and would absolutely order this again! We ate dinner with friends at Josephina. They have been talking about how much they enjoyed it so we went on a Tuesday night. Our server, Dana was one of the best servers I have ever had. She was so engaging and attentive while also being a bartender. She really tried hard to connect with us and make sure we were happy. I would absolutely order the Focaccia, just mad I forgot to pick up a loaf for home. The cauliflower was amazing with an incredible sauce. My husband asked for some sausage with Cacio Pepe and he couldn't believe how good it was. I had the eggplant which was great. My favorite thing was the corn creme brulee. Delicious! This was our second time dining here and we celebrated birthdays each time. We arrived with a reservation on a Sunday night and it was quite busy. We ordered two mocktails, two appetizers, one pasta, one main and one pizza. Arancini, big eye tuna, ricotta meatballs, Fusilli Negra, wild duck breast, seared scallops, Salsiccia Piccante pizza, and crispy Brussels sprouts. Out of all the dishes we tried, our top favorites were the fusilli negra, big eye tuna, and Brussels sprouts. The big eye tuna was very unique and came with these homemade crackers. The Brussel sprouts were probably the best we've ever had, if you don't like smoky burnt flavor though, it might not be for you. Everything tasted great, no compliants on anything, and service was phenomenal. They gave us a complimentary birthday dessert that came with a candle! So nice of them. I am not a fan of its atmosphere because it was too loud the night we went but I want to give a 5 star rating for the food. The quality, balancing of the flavor and creativity are just incredible! I ordered the lobster pasta and my husband had the duck. They were both cooked exceptionally well. I've eaten at many great restaurants but I haven't had any duck with such thin crispy skin outside and evenly juicy, tender meat inside. It's rare to find pasta made with squid ink sauce in Twin Cities, not to mention that the lobster meat tastes fresh, sweet and chewy. The desert is also unique that you won't find anywhere else, great presentation, not so sweet but make you want to have more. The best part is its price - we ordered starter, two drinks, two entree and desert, only $94. I'd definitely go again. read more

We went on a Thursday night without a reservation and they had spots open on the patio and at the pizza bar. The server was very attentive and nice! The burrata appetizer was just ok, it didn't have much flavor and only came with 4 small pieces of bread. The pappardelle with oxtail was amazing and creamy! With a modern chic and welcoming vibe, Josefina was bustling on a Monday evening. Our group of 4 ladies were seated in the bar and had a pleasant bartender at our service for the evening - he was helpful and quite attentive. Plants, pasta, pizza: the perfect spot to catch them all! Probably one of my favorite spots in Wayzata, this Italian restaurant is the perfect atmosphere for a formal dinner, grabbing a pizza with a coworker, or a cocktail with a friend! The space itself is very modern, with wood accents and live plants everywhere. One of the best features of this spot is the diversity in seating environments: dining room for our formal guests, a heated patio and pizza bar for casual guests, and a bar area for the rest! We were seated in the bar area, and thought it was great. Our server was attentive, timely, but not overbearing or absent! Cocktails and food are top notch! They serve all the classic cocktails, but also have a line of signature plays on those classics! I had the Montengra Old Fashioned, and thoroughly enjoyed the extra depth of these new additions. We always order family style and shared: Arancini, Burrata, Fusili, Ravioli, and a Fughi Pizza. The star for me was the butternut squash ravioli, which was just bursting with flavor in every bite! The Fusili are an intriguing photo op, but fell flat in having any nuanced or original flavor. Add an espresso martini and a scoop of heavenly gelato to finish it off, and the night was complete. Josefina is a great addition to the Wayzata food scene, and will continue to be high on my list of West Metro establishments to frequent! read more

I have always wanted to dine here. I asked my lifelong friend to meet me here after I finished my day working at Gunderson's Jewelers nearby. We had a reservation and we were seated in the bar area. Service was very good. Out waiter was kind to understand we had a bunch of catching up to do. A co-worker of mine had suggested a few menu items to me before I left the store and that was helpful. We enjoyed the burrata that visually comes out looking more like cottage cheese instead of the "ball" look but the flavor was amazing on the grilled bread. We then ordered the1/2 boneless chicken. I don't normally order chicken when I go out...but now I will. Great flavors as well with this entrée. Very satisfying is a word I would use to describe this dish. Worst dining experience I've had in years... rock and hair in my food, horrible flavors, poor service, crumbly dry ice cream, vomit on the floor... We had a group of 6 on a slow Wednesday early evening. We were seated on the covered patio and while it was 55° outside, they had the heat set to 75. We asked them to turn it down and they turned it to 70 which was still too hot. Later we asked if they could try 65 and they instead turned the heat off completely (maybe out of spite? lol) which left us all shivering by the time our entrees arrived. The worst part was the food. I ordered the scallops and the second she put my plate down we noticed there was a hair on it. It was about an inch long fine dark brown hair and it was on the edge of the plate not on the food so I said "eh, well... I guess it wasn't touching anything... I'll just brush it off." She said nothing, probably to avoid the other girls noticing. The scallops were the worst I've ever had. They were so salty you couldn't taste the scallop at all, and the other flavors were far too overpowering. Spicy chili and smoked cumin, other heavy spices... scallops are so delicate, even without the salt-bomb the dish was bad. Plus, the customer photos I've seen of the scallops offered 5 scallops, I only received 4. THEN... there was a rock in my food. I bit down was horrified that I might have cracked a tooth, I attached a photo but there was a literal pebble in the scallop dish. I have never asked for my food to be comped and I still didn't this night but I expected that with both hair and rocks in my food they'd comp it. They did not. Instead they offered a free dessert. So I order pistachio gelato. I used to live in Italy and I miss gelato. This isn't gelato, it's ice cream. Gelato is silky, chewy/stretchy, not dry. The pistachio ice cream was cracking and crumbling (also attached a photo of that) because it was so over-churned. Thank god it was free... At the end of the disappointing meal I went to the women's restroom to wash up. One of the 2 stalls had a small puddle of vomit in front of the toilet. Not sure how long it was there but it was just the cherry on top of a horrible evening. Other than that, the pizzas were just average and the service was off. We had to repeatedly ask for drinks to be refilled and they'd bring only one at a time. Even when 3 of us had diet cokes and all asked to be refilled they'd come back 10 min later with one Diet Coke. Yes please. The drinks, the food, the vibes - does it get any better than Josefina? Nope! We celebrated a friend's birthday at Josefina and had an amazing time! Kicked off right away with drinks - one of the bartenders brought bubbly over and realized I was pregnant, and promptly went back and made me the most DELICIOUS n/a drink complete with beautiful flower ice ball! It was amazing. I will say, they do change their menu seasonally, so some of the dishes we had in their exact form might not be on the current menu. But rest assured, the flavors and atmosphere are always amazing. We kicked off dinner with a few starters, the burrata with toasted bread, focaccia bread and Brussel sprouts. Truthfully, I could have just eaten that for dinner and be so so so happy. I'm a huge fan of any type of burrata dish, and spreading that soft cheese on the toasty bread was a match made in heaven! The crispy Brussel sprouts were also amazing (pine nut gremolata, garlic agrodolce, mint) - exactly what you want in a Brussel sprouts dish. Now, for dinner, we got a LOT of different dishes. There were about 12 of us, so we had everything from the pappardelle with oxtail, the mafaldini cacio e Pepe (a favorite), the fusili negra (lobster, tomato, mint) which is incredible, and then a pappardelle with prawns which, for me, a seafood lover, was delish. We also tried a few pizzas, and the arugula one was fantastic. Okay in all honestly, it was all fantastic. We finished off our dinner with a smattering of gelatos - perfect sweet way to end the night. They have a rotating seasonal gelato flavor as well as some main staples, like pistachio and chocolate, and all are incredible! I have been here. Few times now and can feel comfortable to rate the restaurant as excellent - for ambiance, mostly delicious food and great service. Last night we had the half chicken, pappardelle with oxtail, wood fired beets and halibut ceviche with 2 glasses of vino and a chocolate budino for dessert. Everything was so delicious except for the ceviche. It was so fishy! We loved the chicken and the pasta. The chicken was served with hot sauce and salmogrio sauce. Now that sauce made the dish extraordinary. Previously, we've had the pizza! So good. I always go for Margherita. The fungi is also a favorite but it was too salty here. Have been twice. First time the lobster pasta was weird. Overly salty and the mint did not hit the mark. I got a take home box and ended up throwing it away. Portions were VERY small. Made a reservation for a Saturday night dinner to celebrate my birthday with dear friends and was pleasantly surprised that valet parking was available. It's a wine based cocktail and a single sphere with a fresh rose inside that blooms as it melts. So light and tasty that you might as well order two! The Crudo-bigeye Tuna is also a must try! AH-MAZING. All of it. We enjoyed a pizza which rivals a lot of places in msp for us now - margarita was fantastic as our appetizers. Focaccia bread is homemade and quite possibly the best bread I've ever had. Pappardelle oxtail pasta is full of everything and more flavor wise. The fusilli lobster pasta is the exact opposite flavors as the above but mind blowing good. This place just gets Italian and is fresh and made with so much love. We totally splurged and indulged at our visit and can't wait to visit more. Only thing we would do is skip the espresso martinis next time - nothing to rave about. I'm looking at all of the outstanding reviews for Josefina and wondering if I ate at the same place. Admittedly I only went once and found it somewhat forgettable. I also have the advantage of living in Minneapolis which has several Daniel Del Prado run spots so I have the advantage of comparative analysis which may be why I took this down a bit. I'm a fan of Del Prado's influence on the dining scene in MN and have rarely been disappointed at one of his spots. So maybe I hit Josefina up on an off night. I thought the front of the house operation was very disorganized and the service was very haphazard. I got in about 8:30p and got a pretty cold shoulder at the door when they told me they closed in 90 minutes. I was pretty surprised by that but once seated, I started seeing a lot of their waitstaff heading for the door. Several people came in after me and they really gave those groups a tough time not wanting to let them in despite empty tables and at least an hour until close. I'm assuming this was an anomaly and maybe they had a special reason for letting their staff go early but it wasn't a good look by the front of the house. My usual Del Prado experience is a gracious, welcoming front door experience that makes you want to stay even if you have to wait. The food and drink was on par with other DDP restaurants. The wine list is a little short on variety but it will have enough curious offerings for most people to keep them interested. The feel of the place was familiar to other DDP spots. In fact, it was so similar in feel and content that I got the sense that Josefina is really a clone of places like Rosalia and Martina and was specifically built to provide a similar experience to the folks in the west metro suburbs who are fearful of coming into the "big city". No complaints on the food but I was just hoping for something that set Josefina apart which I did not find. I wanted wow and unique but didn't find it. Since I don't live in the west metro suburbs, this was not really a unique offering, and the front of house operation was a bit rough, I would probably not waste the time or gas to drive out to the lake just to come here again. My lower rating is not for the food or beverage as that was familiar and adequate. It was for the greeting which was not. read more

Suppli- yummy little balls with marinara sauce. Not sure what they're filled with but I'd get them again! Focaccia bread was soooo good. The butter was delicious and I would've ordered three of these Roman gnocchi - big squares rather than little potatoes. Very yummy and very filling. Loved the pesto and mushrooms. Another 5 star restaurant from the team behind Martina and Colita. If Bellecour had to close, this is a pretty good consolation. We tried a couple of their cocktail. The gin and tonic and the negroni. Very well made. They have about eight different craft cocktails on the menu. I recommend the big eye tuna starter. This was perfect ahi. Their pizza comes from an oven that is in the middle of the restaurant. The vongole has littleneck clams, chili and zucchini. We have since gotten takeout pizza and this is really well done too. Their pasta dishes are very rich. The ricotta ravioli and the tagliatelle with shrimp were both delicious. Very creative with the sauces. I've been to Josefina a handful of times, and I've never been disappointed! I recently went here with my book club. I wasn't involved in the reservation process, but I did hear they were flexible. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Gratuity was included in our bill since we were a larger group, but I didn't mind that. We had a nice table set up for us in the outdoor heated patio. It felt like summer in there! I'd definitely sit out there again. My top three recs are: *Focaccia: This is a MUST at Josefina. It is one of the best focaccia's I've ever had, and I'll even say the best in Minnesota. Buttery, flakey goodness. Once I had it with a whipped cheese and that was absolutely divine. *Cacio E Pepe: This is just pure comfort food right at your fork. It's cheesy and peppery, and the noodles are always cooked perfectly. *Any Cocktail: I love their cocktails! Every one I've tried has been delicious. Met one of my gal pals for a mid-week dinner at this upscale (read expensive) restaurant. There were some culinary stand-outs and some disappointments. Our waiter was really attentive and encouraged us to share dishes, which we did. Started off with the seared scallops and the bigeye tuna. The three scallops are highly sauced and that took away from what should be the standout flavor of the scallops. The bigeye tuna was more successful. The Meyer lemon (a personal favorite) and the Serrano tomato sauce added enough heat without too much sauce, so the tuna came through. The second course were the larger plated dinner items. We ordered the "Roman Gnocchi" and the grilled boneless chicken. The gnocchi is a pass- it was described as this unique square-cut of gnocchi (similar to polenta)- it was very bread-like and heavy and the other flavors of the dish could not compete with the slab of "gnocchi." The chicken was tastier, moist and flavorful. The marinade added a citrusy herbed taste that complemented the chicken. The dessert course was the meringue, which was hands down the BEST thing I ate there. The meringue melted in your mouth with blackberries and hibiscus/lime curd that elevated the amazing meringue. We enjoyed the drinks, but steer clear of the dessert amaro, which is a liquor in a shot glass that for $8-10 will have you asking, "What was I thinking?" The cocktails are a much better purchase. The "Mediterranean Gin & Tonic" and the "Fiore" were beautiful and delicious! They both were herby and citrusy and just lovely. They have wine by the glass and the bottle- prices were what you'd expect for fine dining. The Nebbiolo and Sangiovese we picked were solid choices. The wines lean heavily toward Italian. The menu includes a number of 12-inch pizzas, and their $12-19 cost might make this a family choice (I'd say older kids only). There were a couple families with teenaged kids there. Lots of ladies who dine in the restaurant and younger women groups in the bar seating area. The space is quite nice- the open kitchen adds to the cool chic vibe. The acoustics are not great when the restaurant is full- you will need to listen very attentively to hear your dining partner. Expect a multi-course dinner for two with drinks to set you back about $200 (and that's ordering some of the more modestly priced menu items).
