We finally tried Jo's Diner and were pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere is a cute retro diner vibe, and everything tasted fresh and homemade. We started with the onion rings and fried cheese balls, which were hot, crispy, and definitely worth ordering. The burgers and patty melt were cooked well and came with perfectly seasoned crinkle fries. Dessert was the real star of the meal. The peach cobbler was warm, buttery, and full of fruit, the pecan pie was rich and gooey, and even the simple vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce hit the spot. I also appreciated the variety of Southern sides available: mac and cheese, turnips, black-eyed peas, lima beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, broccoli, salads, and more. Service was friendly, portions were generous, and prices felt reasonable for the amount of food we received. I really really don't like having to leave reviews for restaurants that aren't 5 stars, but I've got to be honest about my recent experience here. To start, the menus were absolutely filthy. They had food residue and greasy fingerprints all over them, and were torn and ripped in places. I was shocked that they do not at least have their menus laminated for this very reason. Everyone at our table noticed this and commented on it. This is a horrible first impression when you sit down at a restaurant, and needs to be corrected ASAP! I used to always love coming to Jo's diner over 10 years ago. I would usually get breakfast, and it was great. I decided to get something different today, and I think I just ordered the wrong thing. I ordered a house salad with fried chicken on top. They used to have this on the menu years ago, but I didn't see it; however, our server said she could have them make it for me. What I got was a small side salad ($5) with barely any chicken on it. The salad was in a little bowl, and had ONE chicken tender on top! I was even more surprised when I got my bill and noticed that I was charged $8 for said chicken tender. So for $13, you would expect to at least leave not hungry. I would've been better off just ordering a chicken tender platter and subbing the fries for a side salad or something. Lesson learned, I guess. Our server, Scarlett, was very attentive and really sweet, so that was a good thing! I love the vintage diner feel of this restaurant, and it brings back a lot of nostalgia of visiting "Brent's" in Jackson with my mom as a child. The next time I eat here, I will either get a daily blue plate or go back to getting breakfast. I just don't think salads are their specialty. I will come back and update my review if I do go back and it is better. (*Management: PLEASE get rid of the 3.5% fee for using a card as payment! I purposely avoid restaurants that do this to their customers. I used to work for a credit card processing company, and know that it is against card brand regulations to surcharge debit cards, which it clearly states on the bottom of your receipt that you do. Went to Jo's diner for lunch today. Terrible experience. Waitress was either real new and no one had trained her or she was just bothered having to serve customers. Not one word of welcome no thanks for coming in. When she returned with our change just " your change is seven dollars. Food came out cold not cool but straight out of the cooler without being warmed up. Alex was really put out that we asked to have it warmed up. She did finally take the food back and put the entire plate bread and sides included into the microwave over cooking the sides and the cornbread making them Really dry and overcooked the chicken spaghetti was still on the cool side and really lacking in flavor Service was so poor finally had to get up to go looking for our server. Went for country fried steak and it was delicious! Their white gravy needed a bit of pepper, but the steak was perfectly fried, gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans were excellent! But it's the cornbread, I believe, that will keep me coming back. Delicious! read more

This is the cutest place. I love the red leather booths, old-fashioned bar stools, and pictures of stars from yesteryears. But let's just say I overeat, which is a great thing when the food and the service are so good. But in my sweet defense, how did I know the portions would be so big? The pancake was a big ol buttery lumberjack, and the sausages were the real ones you balled up and put in the skillet; even the bacon was the old-time bacon with the fat you get from grandma's house. The grits, toast, and eggs could have been a dish alone. So I overate and don't regret it, not one bit. But what I didn't know was that you can order lunch at the same time as breakfast. This guy next to me at 10 in the morning ordered a mouth-watering pasta dish. I stared at him; he stared at me. Yes, we shared a little from each of our plates. I understand that our total bill was $32.72 for which we paid cash. However, when receiving our change, they can the $. 28, which rounded our check up to $33. On the way out, I asked why they did not give us our $.28, to which she replied, we don't do change we round up or down if it's .50. To which I replied, that is not stated on your policy you do not tell your guest that and that is thievery. She said all places are doing that now. We have been to Jo's many times. We got there this morning, Saturday morning. They said there was a wait but not even half of the tables were full. I asked if they were short on servers. No they were fully staffed. Never really understood what the wait was for. Then once we finally got seated it was a good 15 to 20 minutes before they even brought water. The service was AWFUL. Really awful. So bad we were thinking our waitress didn't really want to be there today. We ordered a Bloody Mary and thirty minutes later we still didn't have them. The waitress said "I have no control over the bar". What? That's the rudest thing to say. We will not go back. We even asked if the manager was off today because it was so bad. Nope. He was there. We came here for brunch, something we've done for quite some time. The service was outstanding, and we like the 1950s diner atmosphere, but the food was seriously lacking. My club and fries were disappointing - warm toasty bread but one soggy strip of undercooked bacon, mushy tomato, brown lettuce and a cut that left two huge quarters and two tiny quarters and cold, mushy, stale fries that were inedible and looked like they were leftovers from yesterday. My wife's chicken fried steak, hashbrowns and eggs - cold, soggy hashbrowns, cold gravy, and a cold, hard biscuit that looked and tasted like it was baked a week ago. The food today was not even close to what we've had in the past, which makes me think there must have been a change in kitchen management. You can do better, Jo's, so do better. read more

Servers have great attitudes and willing to serve, which I find unusual in these days. The food seems consistent and the breakfast is satisfying. I have eaten several items here and the only item that raised an eyebrow was the chicken fried steak, it seemed processed while the other menu items were fresh and made to order. Flowood Joes Diner Pros- *Seated Quickly Cons- *All four dishes we ordered had something wrong *3 of the 4 of us got our food at the same time the last plate come out 10 minutes after The first 3 plates came out cold. 1- Burrito was not hot at all, the cheese inside wasn't even melted. 2- The poached eggs on the Benedict were hard boiled overcooked or sat under a warmer light too long 3-The omelet was more of a baked egg loaf. Didn't get cheese grits (as ordered) hash browns instead. *The fourth plate was obviously forgotten about bc it came out 10 minutes later with a hot, but burned waffle, and over fried chicken. *While the waiter was nice, we never saw him unless we flagged him down. *Time getting food was too long to get luke-warm food. I have not eaten at the Flowood location but I have eaten at their new Brandon location twice in the last week. The first time was after church on Sunday. I had chicken fried steak, a biscuit with gravy and corned beef hash over hash browns. It was good but not great. 3.5 out of 5. I went back today. It took about 30 min to be seated because they were that busy I had the blue plate lunch. Grilled chicken, turnip greens Lima beans snd a piece of corn bread an old school country lunch. Man that was good. Nothing was outstanding but it was all really good. They have a huge menu selection. You can find something that will hit the spot. I'm definitely going back read more

:( It hurts me to write this bad review. I wanted to love this place and gave it multiple tries. Each time I have visited, the food has taken an hour+ for simple dishes - most recently a simple breakfast plate and French toast. Took 45 minutes At least. I think I could've went to Kroger and bought the ingredients and drove home and made it all myself, ate, and cleaned up and I would've been done quicker. Save yourself some time. Also to add, the flavor is mid at best. You'd think all that extra time and love there would be something special, you'd be wrong. Terrible experience. Terrible service. Terrible food. The classic meat and three is a welcome sign in my travels, brings me back to my days in college with great friends, and finding a place is harder these days. Stop in Jo's for a crispy yet tender Chicken Fried Steak with gravy, freshly mashed slightly lumpy mashed potatoes and gravy, freshly fried okra, all served with hot cornbread. I splurged for a cup of their chicken and sausage gumbo that was surprisingly delicious given this far North of I-10. Went to Jo's Diner yesterday afternoon for an early dinner. Everyone told me the chicken and waffles were super good so I went with that. I've been craving a good chicken and waffle anyway so why not! Let me start with service. To say they're short staffed, you really could not tell it. My food came out in a normal amount of time and was hot. I was checked on constantly which I did find odd because I was on one side of the restaurant alone while the few others were on the other side. But they never forgot about me. I was expecting a thicker waffle but I liked this one too. It wasn't very sweet but it was ok to eat with the best seasoned chicken tenders. The meat and skin of these tenders were all seasoned. I hate when they give you seasoned batter but the meat is tasteless. This was not the case with Jo's chicken tenders at all. I just wish the waffle had been a tad sweeter but it wasn't a deal breaker for me at all. Look forward to going back. read more

Very average place. We waited 30 minutes for a table and turns out they crossed us off the waiting list thinking we were someone else. Once seated it took over 1 hour for four people to get food. Our waitress was a little slow, but understandable considering the table next to us had a girl that threw up on the way to the bathroom. No big deal BUT they definitely didn't mop the floor afterwards. It was so hot. We were sweating. And the place wasn't the cleanest. I ordered seafood pasta and it was WAY too salty. I took my granddaughter to lunch at this restaurant yesterday. Arrived 11:45. Advised the wait time would be about 20 minutes. Finally seated 35 minutes later. Waitress took our drink order for Coke and tea, ordered a cheeseburger and a kid's breakfast. After 40 minutes, no one had been by our table. I had not seen the waitress again. This was our first time coming to the restaurant. We were promptly greeted upon entering the establishment. The environment was very welcoming. We were immediately seated and they took drink orders. The menu is very large and they serve breakfast items all day. Our waiter Alec was very attentive and offered several recommendations. I went with the chef salad. The lettuce was very clean and fresh and the bacon was freshly cooked. The salad tasted amazing. My wife got the Philly cheesesteak and fries, it tasted great also. Disgusting place! Ordered scalloped potatoes and they served what appeared to be chitterlings instead!!! When we asked what it was, they claimed they had no scalloped potatoes but had no clue what it was that they'd served, then they claimed no one was in the kitchen - it was still lunch hour, then they declared it was potatoes. Took my wife and 18 month old for lunch today. Was sat around 11:10. Server Alec D. took long stretches of time before checking on us. Appetizers did not hit our table until 11:42. Food did not make it until 12:10. During our time there, Alec constantly either ignored our table or would check other guests near us without checking on us. Other tables nearby also had significant issues with their service. He tried blaming all others in the restaurant but himself. Very easily the worst waiter I have ever had. This was my 1st time at Jo's Diner, and I was really impressed with the food and service. We started off with beignets. They were so light, fluffy, and with the right amount of powdered sugar. Then we ordered the loaded fried sub the bacon for crawfish - OMG, it was so divine, we almost licked the plate. My son ordered the churro pancake with a side of Andouille Sausage, which was also good. My daughter was simple. All she wanted was a chicken biscuit with cheese. I ordered the crab cake Benedict, which was also good. To top it off, I ordered the upside down pineapple mimosa! When I tell you I wanted to drink so many of those mimosas...delicious! Visited on a Wednesday morning. 8:40am, place was mostly full. Waited to be seated and asked for a different table, host/waiter accommodated the request. Ordered OJ and coffee. Coffee was good and got a refill (finally). Atmosphere is a fifties feel, with a bar and mimosa machine. Reminds me about some of the diners in Florida! Place has booth, bar and table seating. Lots of picture of Dean, Presley and Monroe! It's a cool diner tucked in next to a national brand store! Pricing is a tad high, but portions make up for that price point. I went with eggs scrambled topped with cheese, bacon and hash browns. Didn't know about the biscuits and gravy! So that was prettyAwesome! Food was pretty good for a diner. Hot, tasty and just the right amount of seasoning. Table had condiments and only thing missing was a spoon to stir the sugar and creamer. Wait staff was the only issue, but to be fair, I forced a change to over-seat her area. Anyway, she was good! Oh, napkins... gotta ask for extra as only one comes in the utensil kit (that had no spoon)! Just need an orange juice squeezer machine and bam!
