2 Stars -- I Really Wanted to Love It.
My daughter and I went to Jordyn's Brunch Cafe because we enjoy supporting Black-owned businesses, and we had really been looking forward to trying this place. This place is upscale and beautiful inside.
Our experience actually started off very well. We were greeted and seated by a very pleasant, well-spoken young lady who gave us menus and water and told us she would be our server. Shortly afterward, another waitress came over, didn't introduce herself, and told us she would be taking our order.
Since it was our first visit, we asked what the favorites were. Instead of really recommending a few standout dishes, she basically went through almost the entire menu. We thought, "Okayyy, everything must be good!"
We started with the Roast Beef Biscuits -- $20. Two biscuits came on one plate with some THICK, 40-weight gravy, but let me tell you... those biscuits were GOOD. 9/10. Probably the best thing we had.
Unfortunately, we still had no silverware. We were hungry and excited, so we used the natural forks God gave us--our fingers--and put that plate right between us. Eventually, we asked another waitress who happened to be walking by for silverware, and she immediately and pleasantly brought it to us.
My daughter ordered the Lakeshore Martini -- $16, which she enjoyed and rated 8/10.
I ordered iced tea. The flavor was decent, about 7/10, but it came in such a small, skinny cocktail-style glass that when she first set it down, I thought she had brought me a Long Island iced tea! For iced tea, I definitely expected a larger glass.
While waiting for our food, we were fighting FLIES. I understand flies can come in when the doors are being held open, but there were too many of them. Some type of discreet fly-control system would really help.
For our entrées:
Chicken & Waffles -- $28: 5/10
Cajun Fish & Grits -- $22: Fish 7/10, grits 3/10
Mac & Cheese -- $9: 5/10
Collard Greens -- $9: 7/10
The Cajun sauce on the grits was the biggest disappointment for me. It had a thick, pasty texture and just wasn't enjoyable. The mac & cheese had a good texture but was very plain in flavor. Both $9 sides came in very small cup-sized portions. Overall, the portions felt small for the prices.
My daughter's waffles also came without syrup. Once again, we had to flag down another waitress--the original young lady who first greeted us--and ask for it. She immediately and pleasantly helped us.
Then came the part that bothered us the most.
Our waitress brought the handheld payment machine over, verbally confirmed our order and total of around $140, and held the machine up high, in order to hide all the charges, for my daughter to tap her card.
After the payment went through, the machine was lowered for the tip selection. She clearly had something to hide and what a mean trick. Held the payment machine up high so you don't see the gratuity of 20% & hoping you don't ask.
What was not verbally pointed out to us was that a 20% gratuity had already been added for our party of two, which we would have seen if she would have lowered the payment machine or sat it on the table. She definitely didn't offer a receipt... why would she do that?!
Not realizing gratuity was already included, my daughter gave the waitress another $10 tip.
Restaurants absolutely have the right to disclose and charge service fees or automatic gratuities according to their policies, but when gratuity is already included--especially for only two guests--I strongly believe that should be made crystal clear before presenting another tip screen. A guest should never have to discover afterward that they tipped on top of an automatic gratuity.
The bright spots were the roast beef biscuits and the two other young ladies who were pleasant, attentive and immediately helped us whenever we asked. They are honestly a big part of why I'm giving 2 stars.
I wanted to love Jordyn's. I really did. But between the high prices, small portions, inconsistent food, flies, lack of attentive service, and the gratuity experience, this visit was disappointing.
2 stars.
I sincerely hope some of these things improve because I WANT to see our Black-owned restaurants thrive. Supporting the business doesn't mean we can't also give honest feedback that helps the business become better. read more
