We tend to go to Johnson's for lunch about once or twice a month. Most times we will get their clam strips. Sometimes one of us will get one of their specials and my husband likes their pastrami super sandwich plate with their onion rings. All of the food is good and normally very quick. Tonight was the first time we ever ordered a hand-packed pint of ice cream to-go. For $9.10 we expected a filled container. Instead we received a chintzy amount of vanilla. The contents barely touched the top of the container. Most other ice cream places usually stuff the container with ice cream about 3 inches above the top. Not here. Ahh Johnsons, you used to be so great. My how times have changed. I used to stop here for lunch often. I was in the area, and wanted to stop for a cheeseburger special today to reminisce, and it was a lot of disappointment. - I pulled up just before 1 pm. Someone was out pulling down the open flag from the street. I asked if they were closed. He replied "no", then mumbled something. I did notice the hours are open until 2 pm. I should have plenty of time. - I went in, looking to the specials board and it was wiped clean. I had to interrupt the workers behind the counter from their bickering to learn what the specials were today. They eventually found a paper and read them off. 2 Hot dogs and fries. I'm in. - It was $13+ for 2 hot dogs, fries well done and a medium drink. I looked at my receipt, and it said that I would have saved $.50 if I paid cash. Hmm. That's interesting.. there are no signs telling of the credit card fee. - I sat down to wait for my lunch. Someone put up the "closed" sign in the sitting area while I waited for food. It was 1:08 pm. Nevermind the people sitting in the corner... seems like an awful long time to prep to close. - My hot dogs and fries were delivered. The hot dogs looked cooked nicely, scored and nicely browned. The fries were well done with plenty of salt. I asked the gal in cleaning tables about the credit card fee. She replied that it was something they cannot control, the machine just adds it. I replied it was not allowed.. and she shrugged then walked away. - The dogs were terrible. Cheap, skinless franks that were flavorless. The buns were toasted, and they were cooked nicely, but no crunch of the natural casing, no flavor. All this for $13+! My advice, drive on. The burgers here used to be great, but the hidden fees, wonky closing times/closing practices are not worth the hassle. The workers general disinterest in anything except their gossip and themselves also make it unpleasant. I stopped in here for some fish for lunch. They definitely have a lunch rush and was lucky to grab the last table. Ordering was kind of chaotic, you have people picking up their take out orders, staff bringing food out to tables, and people looking at the menu trying to figure out what to order all by the front counter. The staff however were very helpful and friendly. I decided to order the fish plate which came with fries and coleslaw. The food came out within five minutes and was very underwhelming. The breading was crunchy which was a plus, but was bland and didn't adhere well to the fish. The fish itself was kind of wet, and one piece may have been a tad undercooked. Fries were standard. The coleslaw was good but watery.The real hero here was the tarter sauce; it was phenomenal. But that's not enough to make me order fish from here again. Trying out local ice cream shops. We ordered one M & M ice cream, One Scooby snax, One bada bing cherry chocolate chip, and one Blueberry cheesecake. The kids loved their ice creams. Husband liked his but did notice it was a bit icy. I had bad luck. Okay ice cream but I found a wax wrapper in my scoop and then discovered coffee leftovers from a prior scoop. We also tried the fish and chips, onion rings, curly fries and pepper rings. While the fish was good, we were underwhelmed with the quality. Window service was friendly and helpful. read more

Had the BEST chicken strip plate tonight! I'm not a seafood eater and am tired of the processed & pressed chicken tenders at other places. This was real chicken breast, seasoned and perfectly fried. While on our way back from Monadnok, we decided to stop by at this cute place for icecream. Quick service and a large variety of icecream flavors! They offer your icecream in a cup, sugar cone or wafflecone. Although we assumed the waffle cone comes in kiddie size, but it seemed that smallest size for waffle cone is a small. I wasn't able to finish my serving because of the marge portion so they offered me a secure container to take my icecream back with me. A friend recommended Johnson's for their lobster rolls. So we went there to give it a try. It looks like an icecream stand. It was really busy. Ordered the lobster roll and an order of clams. The lobster roll is large and really delicious. It came with potato salad which I'm normally not of fan of others potato salads but it was good. Also the coleslaw was nice and fresh tasting. Clams were good too. The only minus is it's very expensive but worth the money. read more

It's tradition for us to eat ice cream at Kimball Farm after hiking Mount Monadnock. After finishing our hike yesterday, we pulled up to Kimball and were devastated to learn that they were closed for the season. We started looking up other places on our ride home and found Johnson's. We started with some lunch which we all enjoyed. They have a great selection of sandwiches, fried seafood, burgers, fries, etc. The ambiance inside isn't the best but outside it is beautiful. After lunch we went to get our ice cream. I had a small with their seasonal Pumpkin ice cream, and oreo cookie frozen yogurt. The serving was huge and the ice cream was incredible. Just had a great breakfast at this cute place, sitting outside looking at the beautiful fall foliage. The eggs and home fries were as good as anywhere and the atmosphere made me nostalgic for my New England childhood. We've been coming to this place for years, but after the passed couple visits I had to write this review because it's been a consistent disappointment lately. Last nights visit was the worst, hence this review. We get there, wait in line for a very long time to order food. We sat outside which was nice and a nice view of the county club across the street. But that's about it. We waited outside for close to 40 mins for a kids hot dog, a pulled pork sandwich and a pastrami sandwich. Pastrami sandwich was missing all the toppings we asked for. The pulled pork was mostly hunks of fat and swimming in sauce, a very fake tasting barbecue sauce. Almost inedible, but after the long wait I choked most of it down. We went back in to return our tray, and by then the inside food line was even longer, chaos, and every employee seemed extremely annoyed and frustrated. Nowhere to put my tray so I brought it up to the counter and received nothing but dirty looks from staff. Not sure what is happening to Johnson's! Also noticed the cleanliness has gone down hill, the outside building needs repair and the tables outside were sticky. I think our visits to Johnson's have come to an end! read more

This place is better during the summer. Staff are much nicer and attentive. I recently placed an order today to pick up and the person I had on the phone was impolite and attempting to rush me off the phone. If I could upload a recording of the call I would. When the line was answered I got "Johnson's" and then was rushed to place my order. I kept getting, "is that all? Is that it? Nothing else?" Before I could finish the rest of my order, I had only mentioned one meal. During that I was not asked how I would like my burgers to be cooked. It was off putting and when I finished ordering, I was not given a time of when the food would be done for me to pick it up while still hot. When I asked for price of payment, the answer that was given was "I don't know, you will get the price when you get here" Food ended up wet from condensation and luke warm. When arriving there, it was empty, only four staff members, which brings me to wonder why I was being rushed off the phone. I understand that teenagers work here, I've worked a restaurants similar, but the customer service was terrible. Food: Ended up reheating the food in the oven when I got home. The onion rings are mediocre and undercooked, some of them tasted like fried clams. I'm not sure if the same batter was used to coat them or the cooking oil, but it would be good to make customers aware in case of food allergies. Burgers were decent after reheating, the buns were left on and were toasted which helped. I've been to better diners with better service and food. I most likely stick to buying ice cream here. read more

Went to this place many times and a few things became consistently clear. Their staff is some of the rudest I have ever seen and the food is garbage. I was working nearby and since they are one of the only restaurants in driving distance, I would order sandwiches from them. I usually got an Italian, ordered with no tomatoes and cold. Almost every single time I ordered, the sandwich would come with tomatoes and was cooked (who cooks an Italian sandwich unless requested??). The first few times I just tossed it out, but after the third time of the same exact problem, I started calling the business to let them know about the problem, hoping they would do the right thing and offer to remake the sandwich the next day because I didn't have time to return. The guy on the phone told me to stop nitpicking and eat the food, then he hung up on me. Before now, I couldn't have imagined a business operating like this, but it exists right in Groton. read more

I literally just waited 12 minutes in line for someone to scoop one ice cream for me. There was no one in front of me. When the ice cream was finally brought to me it had the wrong topping on it. I pointed this out, and the staff member apologized and went back to fix it. He then brought out what looked like the correct order so I thanked him and took it and went on my way. Now that I have taken a bite of my ice cream, I know that the ice cream is not correct either. It is not the butter crunch that I ordered, but in fact banana, and it's awful. It might just be because I hate banana that it tastes so bad to me. I can't believe I just spent over five dollars and waited 12 minutes for one tiny scoop of ice cream that I'm going to throw in the trash. I will never be back to this place. read more
