This is one of the best deli sandwiches I've had in quite some time. The bread is perfect bite through, the meats and cheeses are amazing, produce on top is just right. No kidding the perfect deli sandwich. Great price, friendly folks, I'm happy AF right now.

    Soggy browning lettuce.

I used to come here years ago when I was out this way, oh boy has it changed! Almost seems like you're a burden to be in there like they are aggravated that they have to be there and take your order. Twice within a week I got browning soggy lettuce on my grinder, after the first time I figured maybe they just didn't notice but it's become clear they just don't care. Sadly I used to tell everyone to stop here and can I say that will no longer be the case.

1st time walking into John's Imports Deli in Winsted today. Place had an "Old School" feel to it, had high hopes what i ordered would be decent, but honestly, I was underwhelmed with my grinder. Went with Italy's Best -- capicola, prosciutto & salami. Sandwich was very large, seemed like a great value for $6.75. But the bread had a "spongy" texture to it, and the deli meat was extremely salty-tasting. Wasn't able to finish the whole grinder, I just lost interest. With all the deli's in the area, can't see a return visit to John's Imports. A weak 3 Star rating, IMO.

Called order ahead while on route to lake George.... totally disappointed... ordered 2 cheese and veggie sandwiches, but instead got some cheese and about a pound of shredded lettuce on bread with two small pickles, some soggy onions and two pieces of peppers. Never got the olives, mushrooms, and other veggies I requested on it. Totally lame.

Just happened to be driving through Winsted on my way up to New York and stopped here. Delicious grinders and panini wraps! Great hometown feel and beats the heck out of fast food if you're on a road trip. Highly recommend stopping here!

Good sandwiches, pretty cheap prices for grinders. Small grocery, mostly Italian foods.

If comfort had an address, it would be Mario's. We always kick things off with a small pizza for the table, because that's the law here. The bread and tomato relish? Should be sold by the gallon. I would pay an irresponsible amount of money for it. If you know, you know. Last night's table lineup was elite: * One of us ordered the veal Neapolitan -- fresh, tender veal in a vodka sauce so good it should have its own fan club. * Another went for the penne alla vodka with shrimp and scallop, which was hands‑down the best dish of the night. The seafood takes an already top‑tier vodka sauce and somehow makes it even better. As a Jersey boy, I don't say that lightly. * I decided to go rogue and step outside my usual penne vodka or steak. I wanted veal parm. I've never had anything fried here besides the calamari (which is amazing), so I figured: why not? Here's the plot twist: The veal parm was the only dish I've ever had at Mario's that didn't hit the usual Mario's standard. The veal itself was totally different from the fresh, delicious cut in the Neapolitan, and the breading had a little... funk. Almost like it had been prepped ahead and picked up a freezer‑burn vibe. Not bad -- just not Mario's‑level magical. But here's the thing: One imperfect dish doesn't change the fact that Mario's is one of our all‑time favorite restaurants. The atmosphere, the people, the consistency, the warmth -- it's all unbeatable. We love this place and will absolutely be back, probably embarrassingly soon. Mario's is home. Even when one dish misses, the experience never does.

There was some confusion with their dinner special menu and the waitress kept coming back to give us the updated one. It got her frazzled. So, my friend waited a very long time to get the glass of wine she ordered then finally reminded her of it after we received our appetizer. The appetizer was a daily special of Hot Antipasto consisting of stuffed mushrooms, baked clams and mozzarella sticks. All Delicious. We also had this lovely bread and this tomato relish kind of sauce on the table. We really liked that too. For our entree we shared the Shrimp and scallops in a vodka sauce. It was really good. I'd definitely come back here when i'm in the area again.

The salt in chicken dish almost gave me a heart attack. I arrived with my cousin early and there was another table with four people and just us. I overheard that the people couldn't get the drinks they wanted. One of them said he waited all week for a good drink and they didn't have the right stuff to make it. The waitress made him something else but he didn't get his first choice. The flavor of my chicken tasted like it came from a smelly rancid refrigerator. So I couldn't finish it or take it home. I didn't have the heart to tell the waitress, who was trying her very best to please us. And she did a great job making suggestions. I heard someone else complain her Chicken Florentine was so salty they couldn't finish it either. So much potential for a local riverside restaurant. With changes and more arts happening in Winsted, this place might not survive the demand for better quality and a new trendy vibe like Sassos or Hanqs or Foxtails. My pasta sauce was good, but the pasta broke and fell apart. Whether overcooked or not boiled properly, or re-boiled, if you cannot cook pasta at an Italian restaurant you might consider fixing that issue, stat. They need a bartender, and to get out of the 80s with their menu. Better knowledge of drinks and wines is also important. If you're not training your staff on the latest drink trends and the names of wines, you will fail. You always have to be leery of an Italian place that spells Cavatelli wrong on their menu. "Cavitelli" can't even be found in Google. It doesn't exist. Something is not right with the way the food tastes. I hope they read this, I was going to post 2 Stars, but their affable and accommodating waitress saved them.

We ended up with a small loaf of Lemon Blueberry bread ($6) and a Cinnamon Roll ($5). The Lemon-Blueberry bread was more like a poundcake than a bread, and it sure was a delicious poundcake at that. It was super moist and very lemony, and since we split it, half of that $6 loaf made for a very yummy and satisfying dessert. The Cinnamon Roll was everything one would want in a Cinnamon Roll!
