Since 1969, Steve's Place in Newington has been serving food such as sandwiches and pasta to locals, and it's one of the most popular independent sandwich shops in the area. Living nearby, I've been to Steve's a few times over the years, but I've lost track of it in recent times. Yelp Friend Elisa F recently reviewed her family's long time favorite - Steve's half cappicola grinder. Her review and picture of a grinder with my preferred ratio of meat to fresh vegetables captured my attention. By phone this week, I ordered a half cappicola with lettuce, tomatoes, provolone, seasoning and mayo for lunch. It was ready when I arrived and I ate it in the small outside area. "Half" is a relative term. This half was fifty percent of a giant. It had high quality good salty cappicola, great tasting juicy vegetables and a fresh grinder roll. I'm all about sandwiches with high quality ingredients in proportion to the other ingredients, and this fit the bill. Nothing fancy. Just well executed. I hadn't tried Steve's place for breakfast in a long time. I was looking for breakfast and thought, why not. Two sausage egg and cheese sandwiches were outstanding. Melty cheese, delicious grilled sausage. Their hard rolls used to be delivered fresh every day from A local bakers and I see that has not changed. Its hard to believe that I've been coming to this place for forty years!.... and I will continue to do so for many more! As a proud omnivore, the roast beef Subs can't be beat and the meatball sub is right up there too, along with many of the other subs. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! I wanted to stay away from bread, so instead of a grinder.....I ordered a side order of meatballs .....and a side order of sausage with peppers, onions, sauce and cheese . They charged me $7.00 for 1 sausage, and 1 meatball.....and they cut them in half to fill the to go tin and make it look like more product......LOL.....Total BS !!!! We were introduced to this place by a business associate, who sang its praises. It was hard for me to wrap my head around what to do. One must order at the counter, then a runner brings the food to table. I know, I know, they've been doing this for many years and most people can figure it out, etc. -- but I'll still admit, I wouldn't have known what to do had our friend not shown me the ropes. This is a diner/deli kinda place. A chicken soup was rewarding, honest warmth. We had burgers, twice, because they do them well. The bun is toasted, the meat is high-quality and they cook them with a wee bit of pink (yeah, I live dangerously). And their deli pickles are to die for! A special sandwich, a turkey dinner-on-a-roll thing, was delicious. Homemade stuffing intertwined with good turkey, and cranberry sauce, on a Kaiser roll. Side of potato salad is very good. Red potatoes -- obviously homemade. Drinks and sodas are the usual culprits. I wanted coffee. It was sludge -- don't order coffee. They do have a few cool sodas that are fine with this kind of fare. The bottom line: the food is good. The physical place is very simple, but clean. But it's really expensive (Rein's deli expensive) for lunch. If you've read our Yelps, you're aware that we're not afraid to spend money. But when I got the bill for our latest foray ($30 plus tip for two 1/4 lb. burgers, a potato salad, a pickle, and two sodas) I decided I'll not return here. Hi!! My name is Abbey,and I had a bad experience with this restaurant, and I not the employee. I work for Door Dash, and on cloudy/rainy days, the GPS messes up frequently. So, I arrived to what I thought was the parking lot near Steve's Place. Well, I was wrong. No fault to anyone--this is the GPS not working correctly--I called the restaurant to let them know that the GPS messed up. My call was picked up by a lovely woman, who gave great customer service. (I was in the restaurant business for twenty years .) She was very kind, and began to give me directions to the restaurant; I cannot praise her more. However, I was walking, because--like I said--I thought I was right near the restaurant. She gave me some landmarks to help, and I went on my way. Unfortunately, this is an area with which I am not familiar, and, again, I could not find the restaurant. So, like any normal person, and employee, I called them back. The same very nice woman (she sounded like a teenager but I'm not sure, so I don't want to offend her, lol; I just want to give credit where credit is due) picked up the phone, and when I again began to explain with her my plight, a "gentleman" picked up the phone, (I'm assuming it was her manager or even Steve himself!). He said hello then, "What are you doing?" I said, "What am I doing?" And he responded with yes, and that this was a busy restaurant so what was I trying to do here. I told him about the GPS, and then said I was trying to give the best possible customer service that I could. He said he was, too!!!!!! I could not believe it. Maybe I was not his customer, but I was trying to service HIS, and MY, customer. I kindly asked him for some landmarks and he ga e them to be, but not with a "service" tone in his voice. I thanked him, and that was it. I do not know if I am making too much of this, but only did I take personal rudeness when I was simply trying to do my job, but he also cost me money, because I had to end that dash, and call the helpline to tell them what happened, so that I would not get a negative review. As always, the support staff was exceptional, and put my minds at ease; but, get this--I had parked soooooo far away from where I was walking, because, like I said, I thought that I was at the restaurant. So, basically, I was lost. I swear to you, with no hyperbole, that it took almost FOURTY minutes to find my car!!! By this point I was pretty upset, and also upset with myself, because I should taken a picture of my surroundings, to see where I had parked. I can admit when I am wrong, lol. So, I finally found my car, and I tried to look at the silver lining--I got more steps into my day, (which I am tracking on with my new Apple Watch. Love it) so thought of it as some exercise, lol. I went to Steve's Place during my lunch break after hearing from a number of people in the area that the sandwiches there could not be beat. Steve's Place did not disappoint. I had probably the best Thanksgiving sandwich (and I've had a few in the area from different restaurants). Not only was the food top notch but the atmosphere was comfortable, warm and inviting. I stopped by Steve's place while visiting a friend in Newington, CT as he stated it was one of his favorite places to grab a bite in the area. All in all, the restaurant has a very nice and cozy feel to it. It is located on one of the main streets in downtown Newington, and its outdoor seating offers a nice view of the adjoining storefronts. The interior of the restaurant also gives off that welcoming feel with nice big booths and very friendly servers. What is not all that welcome are the prices (as mentioned in prior reviews) as a sandwich and drink will almost certainly cost you upwards of double digits. Sadly the quality of the food does not match up to the corresponding charges, though this is not to say that the food is not good. It's just not very remarkable either. I had an eggplant parmesean sandwich, and I'd have to say it ranked somewhere in the middle among all the eggplant parm I've consumed in my life. My compadres each got meatball parm subs, with one friend being pleased and the other being quite displeased. Bottom line is that Steve's gives off a great vibe and has decent fare, but the high prices make it difficult to justify earmarking it as your "go-to" neighborhood spot. read more

Oh...where to start. Dark, old and dirty is the first impression walking in. Menu's posted everywhere....specials board as you walk in, signs on the counter, signs on the wall behind the counter. Takes a few minutes to figure out where to look. First time in, I decide to go conservative. I order a chicken parm grinder, 1/2 size since they warn you how large the full is. First question I get is, "Do you want cheese?" Well...it's a Chicken PARMESAN...the word MEANS CHEESE. I should have bailed right there. I say yes only to hear,"What kind?" Worried, I respond traditionally with,"Mozzarella please." To which I he says,"American, Provolone, or Swiss(!!??)?" Floored....I choose provolone against my better judgement. America and certainly swiss was NOT an option. Next question, "Do you want sauce?" WHAT? I think I just nodded yes at this point. Putting the nail in the coffin I hear,"Peppers?" It's simple....a chicken parm grinder is fried chicken cutlets, melted mozzarella cheese and parmesan, sauce on toasted italian bread. No need for these other questions. I'm told to go sit down and they will deliver the food. I can pay after. I look in the display for a side salad or something and only see untouched potato salad and cold cuts sitting unwrapped on a shelf. I grab a bag of chips and a soda from the very small selection they have of both. The grinder shows up. Big fuffy white bread loaf...not toasted or warm. Not crunchy and barely holds up to the stuff inside the sandwich. Not nearly enough chicken to fill the bread and COLD slices of provolone sitting on the chicken. The sauce, what little there was is sucked into the dry white bread. The chicken and sauce fresh from the microwave are void of flavor and the texture of the bread is a mushy like paste from absorbing the sauce. Here is the kicker. No choice to get mozzarella on the sandwich....but as I walk out I see on the specials board there was Eggplant "Parm" (they used the air quotes...not me) which says it has melted mozzarella on it! Brutal. Glad a friend paid for lunch. No thanks. read more

Since 1969 Steve's place has been making one of the best grinders in Newington. Along with the grinders you have to include the made in house pickles along with the best potato salad and chicken salad I have ever eaten. Dinner also has option line ziti or shells with a huge meatball and bread and butter. The homemade meatballs are incredible!!
