    Half Cappicola Sandwich
    Jason P.

Since 1969, Steve's Place in Newington has been serving food such as sandwiches and pasta to locals, and it's one of the most popular independent sandwich shops in the area. Living nearby, I've been to Steve's a few times over the years, but I've lost track of it in recent times. Yelp Friend Elisa F recently reviewed her family's long time favorite - Steve's half cappicola grinder. Her review and picture of a grinder with my preferred ratio of meat to fresh vegetables captured my attention. By phone this week, I ordered a half cappicola with lettuce, tomatoes, provolone, seasoning and mayo for lunch. It was ready when I arrived and I ate it in the small outside area. "Half" is a relative term. This half was fifty percent of a giant. It had high quality good salty cappicola, great tasting juicy vegetables and a fresh grinder roll. I'm all about sandwiches with high quality ingredients in proportion to the other ingredients, and this fit the bill. Nothing fancy. Just well executed. Four Stars for a very well executed sandwich with quality ingredients and good service.

This was my favorite sandwich shop when they had a second location in Rocky Hill! Since that's been closed, I've ventured to their original Newington location a few times. It's very similar, inside decor & all. Definitely an old school sandwich shop vibe! Steve's was actually my grandfather's favorite sandwich shop and he would bring me a "half cappy" whenever he would visit. Since then, that's been my favorite sandwich! Piled with lots of capicola, provolone, lettuce, tomato and oil & vinegar - a classic!

So far I've had the Turkey grinder. Corned beef breakfast special and a bacon egg and cheese. Everything has been truly delicious and the staff is so kind!

    Chicken Cutlet Sandwich

Absolute joke of a sandwich. Don't order here if you want any actual chicken! There are better restaurants on the same street. Used to order Steve's Place all the time and have been disappointed every time in the last year. No value and not the best taste.

Conveniently located between Route 9 and the Berlin Turnpike, they've been serving up hot dogs, sausages, deli meats and cheeses, a big selection of house-smoked meats, prepared foods, steaks, ground beef, seafood, chicken and sandwiches since 1964. They sell bundled packages of burgers, steaks, and chicken to feed an army at your next barbecue. And if you happen to be in the market for frozen cubes of goat, well, they have that too. In all seriousness, their product selection is quite impressive. We stopped by yesterday and picked up two sandwiches, a container of chili and a half sour pickle for $26. My turkey and pepper jack cheese sandwich was excellent. First of all, the amount of fresh and delicious turkey was very impressive, I mean it was really piled sky high on a soft and fresh bulkie roll. My wife's ham and cheese was an equally generous sandwich. Half a sandwich was all we needed for lunch. Oh, and that pickle was pretty darned good too. I haven't tried the chili yet, but based on the overall excellence of our experience, I'm sure it will be fantastic.

You expect, like the other establishments in the plaza, to find a small cafe style restaurant. When you walk in, you are surprised with fun decor and spacious dining area. Everyone who has gone with me says the same thing "I would never expect it to look like this based on the outside." As for food, they have the Best Reuben sandwich in Rocky Hill. Fries are crispy and price on point. Every meal I've had there has been great! The only downside is table service during lunch is very slow. So happy I finally caught this restaurant when they were open!…read moreI'm now making an effort to get out of the house early to catch them. Firstly, this restaurant is bigger than it looks! Secondly, the latte, cocktail & mocktail options are amazing, along with the many many options of food. I've heard that food from restaurants with large menus are mediocre...this DOES NOT apply here. My party of 2 tried breakfast & lunch options. Both were fresh & so flavorful, especially that homemade syrup I had with the French Egg Holes & Cinnamon Roll Pancakes (3). The home fries came out & were seasoned to perfection. Also, not 1 hard potato to be found. The over medium egg in my thick french toast was actually medium! And they gave me the wholes that were cut from the center of the bread. The pancakes were so fluffy & the icing delish. Tasted exactly like a cinnamon roll. We also ordered 2 different mimosas. The cranberry & the classic. Both were made crispy cold, with quality juices & came garnished. The Salted Cinnamon Mocha Latte, was velvet. It wasn't overly sweet, it wasn't watery or overly bold. I was surprised about how tall the cup was...I drank all of it. It wasn't served scorching hot, so I could sip right away. The Greek Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup was lovely. Typically, soup is watery & looks like it was the last bits, but this had chunky meat, the broth had flavor with hints of lemon. You could see the herbs. This didn't scream, I'm from a can at all. The service was also nice & the waitresses didn't mind that we couldn't make our decisions right away. She & her counterpart offered suggestions & were very kind with checking on us. At the end of the meal, we couldn't help but order some take home from the lunch menu for later. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

Welcome to the great stuffed shrimp taste-off of 2021!!…read more In search of the best stuffed shrimp in the area to serve on Christmas Eve, I posted on various Facebook pages to solicit recommendations. Of course, I can't just trust strangers on Facebook, so we did what any self respecting Yelpers would do...we did a trial run of five spots over a two day period, ordering 4 stuffed shrimp from each. We sampled them plain, with lemon, butter, and cocktail sauce, critiquing the size, quality of the shrimp, taste and quality of the stuffing, and overall value for the price. With, of course, photos of both the raw starting point and the cooked final product. As Public Market received the most accolades in my surveys, it was our first stop. I had not been there before, it's a cute Italian market with a good selection of stuff. There is no signage for the stuffed shrimp, and they aren't in the case. So I guess it's one of those...if you know, you know. Otherwise, no shrimp for you! I audibly gasped when the woman handed me a plastic container with 4 shrimp and $32 and change noted on top. Was it upside down? Were my glasses dirty? No...at $26.99/lb, these bad boys rang in at $8+ each, the most expensive by far in the taste-off. They also topped the charts in cooking time, needing nearly 40 minutes to cook at 375. Most others were in the 25 minute range at 350. But just look at them - they're beautiful. I so wanted to love them! Unfortunately, the stuffing wasn't appetizing to me. It had chunks of what I think were fresh celery and onion, that remained crunchy even after baking for 40 minutes. It wasn't a texture I appreciated, and the stuffing was otherwise pretty bland. Better with lemon, even better dipped in butter, but for the price, they should shine alone. Hubby was hoping for something more like the ritz cracker type of stuffing, so he was also disappointed. Public Market came in at #2 out of 5 in the great shrimp taste-off of 2021. While I wasn't thrilled about the price or the taste of the stuffing, there's no arguing that the shrimp had a commanding presence, were fresh, perfectly cleaned, and tasty. I knew if we ordered these I'd be broke and figuring out how to amp up the seasoning at home, but my guests would have been visually impressed. And it seems like so many others love these shrimp, so maybe it's just an us problem. I will go back to Public Market to try other things, as the service was friendly and the quality of their ingredients to be top notch.

I think collectively my office has had their entire menu. From sandwiches, to salads, to pizzas, to lasagna and more. Every single meal has always been super fresh, where all you can hear is "mmmmmMmmmms..." My lunch was served on a freshly baked Italian hoagie roll, filled with roasted peppers, ham, tomatoes, mixed greens, capicola and provolone cheese. In addition to each and every single ingredient being super fresh, this was also a very large portion. I could have easily shared the other half with someone else, had it on another day or ate it right after the first portion... which one did I do? Cozy, charming, the kind of place that practically begs you to believe great Italian food is coming. But looks don't season food. From the pasta fagioli to the eggplant parm sandwich, the common thread was impossible to ignore: bland. Not subtly restrained. Not "let the ingredients speak." Just flat. No depth, no punch, no reason to go back for another bite. Italian food should comfort you and excite you at the same time--this did neither. Credit where it's due: portions are generous, and the bread was fresh and nicely toasted, which honestly might have been the most flavorful thing on the table. But when bread becomes the highlight at an Italian spot, that's a problem. I wanted to love Lenoci's. The space sets you up for it. Unfortunately, the food doesn't deliver.
