I was told that I needed new struts on my Camry by another repair shop out of the area. Went to see John as recommended by family and friends. I explained my previous diagnostic to John. He told me I didn't even have struts. My car was fine. He did an oil change and a few other things for a very nominal price. Upon returning home I dropped my keys under the seat and couldn't retrieve them. I returned to John where proceeded to get the necessary tolls and found my keys at no charge. We can't say enough good things about this place! We were travelling over the July 4th weekend and the service light came on in our Toyota Prius. We spoke with Kevin and he was able to take us in the same day and do the diagnostic testing. Turned out it was a coolant control value that could cause major overheating on our drive back to LA. We made our way to the dealership to have it replaced. Kevin didn't even charge us for this! His friendliness and professional demeanor put us an ease and made for a great experience. My daughter purchased a vehicle from John which he had refurbished and had given her a verbal warranty. She commutes from Paso to SLO. The car started to overhead on the drive. She took it back to John and he took it in, worked on some minor needs and she took it back. Unfortunately, it still persisted on overheating. After John kept inspecting the engine and working on it he decided that it must be a leak in the head gasket. Even though he was completely booked, he took the car in, pulled the engine and heads. It was as he suspected, a small pin hole in the gasket. He replaced everything, redid the heads, installed the engine in less time than he had estimated. Upon my daughter picking up the vehicle, he informed her that he was covering the cost of the repairs, all the repairs. I don't imagine many shops doing this. I cannot recommend John and his shop highly enough. The shop is immaculate, the work is top notch and timely. If you have any type of Asian vehicle please consider at least stopping by and talking to John to get an estimate. It will definitely be worth your time. read more

I took my older Toyotas (Supras and Corollas) here for over 6 years until I moved to Georgia. Otherwise, I'd still be taking them to John's! John is professional, knowledgeable, and passionate about cars, and he's also very friendly and honest with reasonable prices for the work. He hires employees who have excellent work ethic as well. There were times when he went above and beyond what I expect from a mechanic, from his generosity on not charging me for little jobs to saving me a heap on other occasions. For instance, my home state Tennessee doesn't have smog checks for registration, and the check engine light kept coming on our Corolla for an expensive but relatively unnecessary repair when its California registry came due. Tennessee doesn't require smog checks, so he agreed that it would be fine and much cheaper for us to go ahead and register it via mail in TN instead of doing the repair (and keep an eye on it just in case) since we were moving again anyway. It made the cross-country trip just fine and is still rolling strong despite the light and tiny oil leak. My 1985 Supra also made the trip and is still rolling strong, too! read more

I wanted to chime in to say how happy we were that John took the time to look at our friend's car that was making a loud grinding noise. She needed to get it checked out before driving back to the Bay Area. It was a holiday weekend, and John already had a busy schedule that day, but he took the time to help us out by taking the wheel off to figure out what was causing the noise. He discovered that a small rock caused the grinding sound. Horribly unprofessional and quite honestly criminal. They charged me over $400 to tell me they couldn't work on my car. They said my transmission needed to be replaced and that they took my wheels off to find that out. I took my car to another mechanic who fixed my clutch, the only thing that needed to be fixed, and said the wheels had obviously not been touched. The owner yelled at me and my mechanic when we asked about it. Avoid this place like the plague!!! read more

I own a 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser, and John's has always done a great job. Being the owner of a 20 year-old vehicle, I can always count on having a couple of unexpected issues pop up every year. John is very personable, won't BS you on price quotes or service time, and has done an outstanding job. From doing a full head-gasket and cylinder head machining job (about $1600) to re-attaching the grounding cables for my battery ($46 or about 1/2 hour labor), his work has been top-notch and each time I have gotten my vehicle back running flawlessly. Only reason John's doesn't get 5 stars is because he tends to take a decent amount of time on the repairs and issues (3 1/2 weeks for the head gasket job), but it's a very small operation and I'd rather have someone take the time to do it right than rush through it and do a shoddy job. Just had my Mazda 3 in for brakes that were squeaking and a transmission fluid change. Got a call from John a little after I had dropped the car off and he explained that my brake pads still had about 75% life left and that maybe the squeak was from dust getting wedged between the pad and rotor or the rotors getting a little glazed. Only charged me for half the labor that I had expected and got me dialed in. Could have easily just swapped the pads and rotors and never told me a word about that. What a stand up shop. Forgot to mention that he also gave me a $10 coupon on my service without me even asking for it! Yesterday (Sept 6th) as I parked at SLO Costco (came from Paso Robles) I noticed a bunch of grease inside my front passenger wheel well, and on the passenger side doors. I didn't see anything obvious (torn CV boot), but today (Sept 7th) decided to get an expert opinion. I got on the phone with John's Import Auto Care, and got a very quick, no waiting appointment. I brought it in immediately, they got my old 2000 4x4 Toyota 4Runner up on the lift, and determined that I must have run over a grease tube or something similar.
