So, so good. Made in house. They stick to the basics and they do it right. No frills but every single donut is just amazing. I bring them to work every so often and they are gone gone gone in just a few minutes (even the "dieters" are cheating to eat these things. Personal favorite is the cinnamon stick, I had a dream about them once. Try to eat just one. read more

I'm stumped by the bad John Donut reviews. I truly am. I treated myself to an apple fritter today, and it was donut bliss. My staff BEGS me to bring fritters in to work. Hmm. Well, I'm happy with my donuts. read more

The. Best. Donuts. Ever. For a baseline, we compare original glazed donuts wherever we go. These are the best hands down. Especially if you get one hot around midnight. Regular non-fancy donut prices and great atmosphere. read more

St. Louis is one of the nation's most unusual donut markets. Dominated by local donut shops, only recently has national mainstay Dunkin' Donuts tried to re-enter St. Louis after pulling out all together several years ago. Among the best donut joints in all the STL is John's. Nothing pretentious here. Just great donuts. Even better, this donut shop is open overnight most nights. The chocolate covered cinnamon rolls here are the best donuts in the house. Everything's good--but the chocolate cinnamon rolls are truly extraordinary. They're fluffy and filled with flavor. The spice of cinnamon and the wonderful waxy chocolate blend to create a flavor that's nothing short of perfect. But if you want the best of the best at this donut shop, visit Tuesday - Friday and try the apple or cherry turnovers. WOW!!!!!!! I grew up in a town with a distinct German heritage back in Indiana, and apple turnovers were a prized tradition among the bakeries. Nothing I tasted in childhood or at any gourmet bakery comes close to John's turnovers. They're flaky and filled with flavor. Unlike many bakers who pack on the sugar, this little donut shop understands the perfect balance between tart and sweet. Sometime the simple things in life deliver the greatest pleasure. A well-executed apple or cherry turnover from John Donut confirms my theory on simplicity. read more

Its 3AM in St. Louis. You are hungry. Nothing is open right now. What do you do? You go to John Donut!!!! They open at 11AM and stay open all night making fresh donuts. I would drive down and split a dozen with a friend, staying up all night, eat half of my share washed down with a bottle of milk, go to bed, wake up and eat the rest of my donuts for breakfast. Favorite ones: Apple Fritter (!!!!!!!), Blueberry Cake, Buttermilk Crullers. All of the donuts wonderfully fried on the outside and soft on the inside. AND its soooo cheap!! Like $8 for a dozen (I think...). Go get them late at night while they are warm. read more

My daughter and I have been coming here at least once a week now for the past month! We love donuts and this place never disappoints! Plus it's close to home and easy to get to. Every donut we have tried we have loved. Our new favorite right now are the cinnamon rolls with caramel or chocolate spread on the top! I have no idea why I haven't tried one sooner! Their long John's are one of the best I have had in the city. I like the small size of them because sometimes I feel like long John's can be a commitment and I only want a few bites. read more

Kinda dirty. Donuts were ok, you could tell the oil needed to be changed. I expect more from old donut places, like old timers complaining about obama, and public employees slacking. When you see those guys, you know you are in a good place. John's just had a bunch of dusty crap on the walls and a couple homeless guys drinking coffee. read more

John Donut Co is open from 11-12. That is, 11pm-12pm (noon). That tells you a bit about their target demographic, but their donuts are amazing no matter your age, how long you've been awake, or your blood alcohol level. Based on a couple of visits here, you won't go wrong regardless of what you pick, but I think that my favorite kind of donut here is the apple fritter. They're crisp on the outside, moist and chewy on the inside, and have plenty of apple flavor. They are on the sweet side, but if you are looking for something a little less sugary (though seriously...you're here for DONUTS) the blueberry cake and twist donuts are also very good. There really isn't a bad time to visit. Going right when they open at 11, they won't have all of their donuts available but everything will be super fresh. Or go in the morning (specifically, some time after 2 or 3am) and pick from their whole selection. Prices are great. I think it's something like $.75/donut. Overall, a must-try, if you even remotely like things that are bready or sweet. read more

I've been going here for donuts for years. The price is reasonable and it's fast to get in and out. I also love that when you let them choose for your dozen they pick donuts you might actually want to eat (unlike other places). My favorites are their long johns and glazed old fashioned. I love the seasonal pumpkin and blueberry donuts as well. Now that I work further away, many of my coworkers are eating these donuts for the first time and it's fun to watch their reaction to tasting a good donut. read more

Stopped in to try the apple fritter donut and it exceeded my expectations! The perfect combinations of sweet, crunchy, and soft! Definitely worth checking out! read more

I came here with friends for National Donut Day on midnight, and I would say that this moment was probably one of my best decisions in my life! I normally don't like over-hyping places for people, but this is an exception. JOHN WILL NOT DISAPPOINT! My friends and I got a half of dozen to celebrate this special occasion. I thought my stomach was going to explode because I couldn't stop stuffing my face. The donuts were made with fresh perfection with the right level of sweetness on the glaze. I don't think I disliked anything there, but the true contenders were the apple fritters and the blueberry. I am bummed that I live so freaking far from John, yet, I am so glad that I don't work or live close to this terrific doughnut store because I would be munchin' on those apple fritters and blueberry donuts every morning. John Donut Co is one of those hidden gems in St. Louis, and I'm surprised it's not talked about more often. Also you can't ignore their awesome Superman collection. On the random note, I am a little confused of the Korean plaque on the storefront because it's own by two white couple, but hey there's nothing wrong with showing a lil Korean pride. haha. Oh, and a little warning... bring more than one friend with you or if you don't have more than one friend, at least a friend. The location is kinda sketchy if you're by yourself, but please don't let this last note scare you away because it's a real treat. :) read more

I love this place. Good seating, nice location (on my way downtown and right by the Soulard Market) and great prices. You can pick up 2 donuts and a coffee for $3.65. Easy. I like the old fashioned style, the glazes they have, and the fritters. Their coffee can be incredibly bitter, but usually it's decent enough. read more

Johns donuts are prob one of the best kept secretes in STL! They are located right outside Soulard and are amazing, tasty, and not to expensive. Only reason this is not a 5 star review is that they are closed Sunday's. Johns is open from 11pm until they sell out the next day so usually around 10 or 11 am. My favorite are the apple fritters but the glazed donuts are amazing as well! You walk in and see them making them and it smells amazing. You can request ones that just came out of the oil and they are even better. STL has good donut shops and Johns adds to the donut landscape with great deep fried clouds of heaven!!! read more

The donuts and service where Okay, not bad but not great just good. Its not really as good as people say to be honest. I did enjoy the atmosphere and environment and had a fun time hanging out there. If anything i would give them a 3.5 if i could. read more

The quintessential late night/early morning donut shop, I'm completely in love with their cake Crumb donut. The apple fritter isn't half bad either. It's worth it to get there when they open and take advantage of freshly made pastries. Don't come here expecting trendy flavors or chic shapes, this place is old-fashioned in the best way. read more

My sister surprised me with an apple fritter after a long day of traveling to St. Louis, because dayum right I deserve a donut! Who doesn't?! Been living in St. Louis for a year and desperately searching for a good, no frills, donut shop to replace the one I miss from back home. This is it. Had a great crueler donut and can't wait to go and try the apple fritter, a sprinkled donut and whatever other goodies call out to me. read more

Really, does John's need my review? Probably not, but who cares! The donuts are FIRE! I love John's because it reminds me of home (if you're ever in Memphis, check out Gibson's). A smart man once told me that a donut shop is only as good as it regular glazed donut. Baby, John's is BANGIN'! They also make this coconut lemon glazed cake thing sometimes, and it's also great! I have been a fan of John's for going on 3 years now, simply the best donuts you can get in St. Louis. This all changed tonight. Another reviewer mentions this same encounter. We came in and three younger girls were in front of us, the owner (tall, large, balding man) was giving the girls a hard time because he didn't understand that they had already ordered. After he finished giving them a horrible attitude because he couldn't understand them, he turned to us and said "it's like pulling f***** teeth" and we tried to ignore his comments and ordered our usual (6 apple fritters and 6 glazed donuts). Everything was okay until he said "that'll be $12" and I added "can we get 3 other donuts in a separate box?" He then continued to say "the f*** do you not understand about is that all?" I looked at him and calmly replied "I'm not doing this tonight. That will not fly with me. I am not in the mood for this." I kept repeating that as he flung the f-bomb at me, and he put his fists in my face and said "I'll f****** knock you out." I remained calm and kept repeating "I'm not doing this tonight. I'm just here for donuts" and he threw the box down and said "f*** you, get the f*** out of here" and he stormed to the back. Now I wasn't going to just leave without my hard-earned donuts, so I asked the other worker to ring me up (who is always nice), and he replied "hey we all have bad days" to somehow justify the owner's behavior. We ended up calling the police and they talked to him, not sure what else happened, but the police know him and said they were surprised to hear that he exhibited that sort of behavior. I'm so disappointed that this happened, I love the donuts here. But we will never EVER be back. Sure everyone has bad days, but I'm a nice guy. I've worked in customer service for years, I know how horrible customers can be. If I ever treated a customer how he treated me I would have been fired on the spot. This was completely uncalled for. This guy is a bully, and I think he's used to customers cowering down to him, but he was met with a little resistance tonight, and I hope he remembers that the rest of his life. read more

Seriously the best little place to grab donuts in downtown STL! My go to spot for no frills great donuts, love that I see the same folks every time go in, no rotating tweens here. One time their credit card machine was down and they gave me the donuts, took my business card, and said to come in another time to pay! Of course I did, and loved that they take care of their regulars in an old school business way. The office loves when I stop in with a box from John Donut...my personal fav is the caramel bar, really the best I've had! read more

This place is the bomb, the best donuts I've ever had, bar none. My wife and I have tried to go here three times. We went on a Saturday night, not realizing that they are closed Sunday (which includes Saturday night). So no donuts before church from John's. We went the following day, late in the evening (around 11:30), hoping they would be open. They were. It was great. We then went Wednesday night after a Dave Matthews concert. Great atmosphere. Like other reviews have mentioned, there is a lot of superman. Also, a stationary bike, in case you want to simultaneously burn and add calories. The donuts are not as sweet as other donuts I've had, which makes them even better. Go to Johns! read more

This place is perfect, especially for the college crowd. It opens and closes late at night, so it is actually the perfect place for a study break. Or, if you're out of that particular age bracket, I would still urge you to go. It's imperative. The donuts, they're amazing. I like to consider myself something of a donut gourmet, since I have been eating them since I was a small child on an almost weekly basis. My father and brother and I have tried them all, in multiple towns, all over America. Chain, local, community-oriented, probably front for drugs. You name it, I've had a donut there. This place is on the top of my list. First of all, the apple fritters are actually to die for. Second, they have old fashioneds, which are these odd donuts that not everywhere sees fit to make. On top of that, they have them covered in chocolate. I'm sorry, but that's obviously a sign that someone out there loves us all very much. Third, they aren't trying to be some nice, brunch place. They have kitschy stuff on the walls unironically, you can see into the back, and the staff will laugh at you, in a good-natured curmudgeonly kind of way. It kind of feels like home, actually... Last, all of their other donuts (I have been several times... for science...) are also excellent. And cheap! A dozen is something around $7, and they are so delicious it is actually shocking. In brief, go there. Eat the donuts. Enjoy the ambiance. Then get back to that work you're avoiding by going on a donut run in the middle of the night. read more
