I've been going here for donuts for years. The price is reasonable and it's fast to get in and out. I also love that when you let them choose for your dozen they pick donuts you might actually want to eat (unlike other places). My favorites are their long johns and glazed old fashioned. Those who put down John Donut should be excommunicated from the donut community. This is THE place. Show up at 11pm, get hot, melt-in-your-mouth donuts - the apple fritter is undescribably delicious, the buttermilk/old fashioned is fantastic and the glazed are wonderful as well. In a donut city, this is where the educated donut eater shops. Or you could show up at any other point between 11pm and 1pm, every night but Saturday night. And then there's the bizarre decorations that you get to feast on when you're maxing on your donut...a santa skeleton, various maps of St. Louis, Superman paraphernalia... My girlfriend lovvvvvvvvves doughnuts, so i said I'll look for a new place for her because her favorite doughnut shop closed down. I was googling doughnut shops near me and low amd behold right under our noses is John's Doughnuts, we have been going to Soulard for yearrrrrrsssssss and i have never seen this place. John's have doughnuts from heaven, this beautiful succulent, sweet, soft and fluffy doughnuts. I don't even eat doughnuts, like maybe one every six months. I seriously ate 4 of the 6 glazed doughnuts i purchased. I am now a doughnut lover thanks to John's doughnuts and they open up during munchie hours 11pm - 6am. I believe i was supposed to find this place, it was meant. I don't know if the owner is the guy in the hat that rings us out of town, but i would like him to know he has gained a faithful forever customer. He is very nice and i appreciate him, brings that old school trustworthy feel back. No Krispy Creme or any other doughnuts for me, I'm team John forever. But if you want the best of the best at this donut shop, visit Tuesday - Friday and try the apple or cherry turnovers. WOW!!!!!!! I grew up in a town with a distinct German heritage back in Indiana, and apple turnovers were a prized tradition among the bakeries. Nothing I tasted in childhood or at any gourmet bakery comes close to John's turnovers. They're flaky and filled with flavor. Johns donuts are prob one of the best kept secretes in STL! They are located right outside Soulard and are amazing, tasty, and not to expensive. Only reason this is not a 5 star review is that they are closed Sunday's. Johns is open from 11pm until they sell out the next day so usually around 10 or 11 am. My favorite are the apple fritters but the glazed donuts are amazing as well! You walk in and see them making them and it smells amazing. You can request ones that just came out of the oil and they are even better. STL has good donut shops and Johns adds to the donut landscape with great deep fried clouds of heaven!!! read more

I would drive down and split a dozen with a friend, staying up all night, eat half of my share washed down with a bottle of milk, go to bed, wake up and eat the rest of my donuts for breakfast. Favorite ones: Apple Fritter (!!!!!!!), Blueberry Cake, Buttermilk Crullers. All of the donuts wonderfully fried on the outside and soft on the inside. AND its soooo cheap!! John Donut Co is open from 11-12. That is, 11pm-12pm (noon). That tells you a bit about their target demographic, but their donuts are amazing no matter your age, how long you've been awake, or your blood alcohol level. Based on a couple of visits here, you won't go wrong regardless of what you pick, but I think that my favorite kind of donut here is the apple fritter. They're crisp on the outside, moist and chewy on the inside, and have plenty of apple flavor. They are on the sweet side, but if you are looking for something a little less sugary (though seriously...you're here for DONUTS) the blueberry cake and twist donuts are also very good. There really isn't a bad time to visit. Going right when they open at 11, they won't have all of their donuts available but everything will be super fresh. Or go in the morning (specifically, some time after 2 or 3am) and pick from their whole selection. Prices are great. I think it's something like $.75/donut. I came here with friends for National Donut Day on midnight, and I would say that this moment was probably one of my best decisions in my life! I normally don't like over-hyping places for people, but this is an exception. JOHN WILL NOT DISAPPOINT! My friends and I got a half of dozen to celebrate this special occasion. I thought my stomach was going to explode because I couldn't stop stuffing my face. The donuts were made with fresh perfection with the right level of sweetness on the glaze. I don't think I disliked anything there, but the true contenders were the apple fritters and the blueberry. I am bummed that I live so freaking far from John, yet, I am so glad that I don't work or live close to this terrific doughnut store because I would be munchin' on those apple fritters and blueberry donuts every morning. John Donut Co is one of those hidden gems in St. Louis, and I'm surprised it's not talked about more often. Also you can't ignore their awesome Superman collection. On the random note, I am a little confused of the Korean plaque on the storefront because it's own by two white couple, but hey there's nothing wrong with showing a lil Korean pride. haha. I love this place. Good seating, nice location (on my way downtown and right by the Soulard Market) and great prices. You can pick up 2 donuts and a coffee for $3.65. Easy. I have been a fan of John's for going on 3 years now, simply the best donuts you can get in St. Louis. This all changed tonight. Another reviewer mentions this same encounter. We came in and three younger girls were in front of us, the owner (tall, large, balding man) was giving the girls a hard time because he didn't understand that they had already ordered. After he finished giving them a horrible attitude because he couldn't understand them, he turned to us and said "it's like pulling f***** teeth" and we tried to ignore his comments and ordered our usual (6 apple fritters and 6 glazed donuts). Everything was okay until he said "that'll be $12" and I added "can we get 3 other donuts in a separate box?" He then continued to say "the f*** do you not understand about is that all?" I looked at him and calmly replied "I'm not doing this tonight. That will not fly with me. I am not in the mood for this." I kept repeating that as he flung the f-bomb at me, and he put his fists in my face and said "I'll f****** knock you out." I remained calm and kept repeating "I'm not doing this tonight. I'm just here for donuts" and he threw the box down and said "f*** you, get the f*** out of here" and he stormed to the back. Now I wasn't going to just leave without my hard-earned donuts, so I asked the other worker to ring me up (who is always nice), and he replied "hey we all have bad days" to somehow justify the owner's behavior. We ended up calling the police and they talked to him, not sure what else happened, but the police know him and said they were surprised to hear that he exhibited that sort of behavior. I'm so disappointed that this happened, I love the donuts here. But we will never EVER be back. Sure everyone has bad days, but I'm a nice guy. I've worked in customer service for years, I know how horrible customers can be. If I ever treated a customer how he treated me I would have been fired on the spot. This was completely uncalled for. This guy is a bully, and I think he's used to customers cowering down to him, but he was met with a little resistance tonight, and I hope he remembers that the rest of his life. read more

Seriously the best little place to grab donuts in downtown STL! My go to spot for no frills great donuts, love that I see the same folks every time go in, no rotating tweens here. One time their credit card machine was down and they gave me the donuts, took my business card, and said to come in another time to pay! Like other reviews have mentioned, there is a lot of superman. Also, a stationary bike, in case you want to simultaneously burn and add calories.
