a cheese pizza in a box

Decent, but not overall great. One of those pizzas where it's not really good or bad. Would probably give it another chance if in the area, but overwise I would pass.

Steak & Cheese Grinder aka Bread Grinder

Even though we live in RI, my wife and I have been ordering grinders take-out from Johnny's Pizza for over a decade and always loved it! I have no idea what has happened in the past few months, but the food quality and quantity have gone downhill drastically. We ordered this past Saturday 8/2 and for the second time in a row, we were extremely disappointed. This is a photo of their steak & cheese grinder, whereas they barely spread steak on the bread, we couldn't even taste or find any cheese on it, and the taste was very bland. In the past, there was seasoning, and the bread was absolutely filled with steak. We felt like we were ripped off, paying $17 for a bread grinder and soggy onion rings like this, plus neither grinder was even toasted as requested. Why I even left a good tip for take-out is beyond me, but we'll never return. So disappointing, I guess we'll just look for another place to order our grinders from now on.

    Huge Cheeseburger Wrap & Fries
    Alan B.

We wanted to grab a quick bite before our hike around Quinebaug Lake. Johnny's Pizza was close and had good Yelp reviews. We called in an order to go, and it was ready in about 20 minutes. We weren't sure where we would be able to eat, so we opted for wraps instead of pizza. We selected: * Cheeseburger Wrap * Chicken Caesar Wrap These sandwiches were both served warm, and included a plethora of hot fries. They were very nicely prepared and tasty! The cheeseburger wrap appeared to have two patties, and was so substantial, I could only eat half. The sauce tasted mayo based and there was an abundance of melted cheese. Somehow, they were able to prepare this without creating a leaky mess. Nicely done! The Chicken Wrap was also tasty, warm with a delicious, mild sauce and an abundance of chicken. My co-diner could only finish half of this wrap, and we each consumed only half of the fries. The pizzas that were coming out of their ovens looked great, I'd like to try one of those. Everyone was masked, hand sanitizer was on the counter, the place looked clean and tidy. It's in a strip mall, so ambience is limited, but the food looked good. We'd be happy to return.

Update: same thing again. The broasted chicken is just plain disgusting. The fries were black from being dropped in old oil and the chicken was pretty much the same. All done with this place. We usually get the broasted chicken and its the best take out or eat in fried chicken around. It is cooked in coconut oil if I am not mistaken. The past few times have been sub par. It is either being refried in used dirty oil or you be the judge. As soon as I brought it into my car the smell was a dead give away. Burnt dirty oil. No offense but it now seems to be all kids in there running the kitchen and check out. I don't think the owners or cooks I always saw there would approve.

Very good menu. Delicious food. Great service. Friendly staff. Prices are fair, but Lousy coleslaw.

Went back to check out how the quality is after not going there in a long time…read more Seated myself and was greeted quickly by a very pleasant server. There was a good selection of specials that day but I settled on the beer battered fish and chips and the clam chowder. Clam chowder came quickly and it was a bit of a disappointment. It really should have been labeled potato chowder because that's what it mostly was comprised of. Very pieces of clam and the seasoning wasn't that great. Not sure there would be another order the next time I go to the restaurant. The fish and chips was the star of the visit. Fish had a nice light coating of batter, very crunchy and flavorful. As always the cod was incredibly fresh and flaky and well fried. The fries were also very crunchy and held their crunch throughout the whole meal. This is definitely a dish that will be ordered again. The seating is comfortable but it is an old style restaurant, think of going out to dinner with Mom and Dad in the 60's but don't let that put you off trying this establishment.

The ambiance inside is nice. The dining room to the left of the entrance contains many booths and…read morelooks to be updated in the recent past. Very nice. To the right of the entrance is a bar with high-top seating and an older dining room w/tables, Windsor style chairs and carpeted floors beyond the bar. A selection of country music played softly in the background. This is most definitely a 'local' spot. There were plenty of customers who know each other. They are very comfortable with the staff and each other. Pro top: If you are easily offended by 'salty' language, I recommend you sit in the dining room to the left of the entrance - furthest away from the bar. A hostess seated us with menu's, took our drink order, delivered it, then let us know our server would be with us soon. I watched the bartender making my drink and I'm not sure she actually knew what she was doing and the drink tasted that way so maybe it was something they don't normally prepare. Pro tip #2: The on-tap beer price is good. When our server arrived they were very no-nonsense (curt? brief? concise?). We both ordered entrees and chose mashed potatoes as a side. We were asked if we wanted gravy which was confusing because one of the entrees was fish and I couldn't imagine gravy on fish. It was for the mashed potatoes of course. Duh. So pro tip number 3: no matter what the protein, gravy is available for your mash. Although our soup and salad were immediately delivered to the table, we waited quite a while for our entrée to appear. After about twenty minutes or so (? could be less, could be more, not watching the clock, but we had an idea of when we arrived) I noticed our server walking by the table noticed no food. They went back into the kitchen and returned immediately with our meals. They were luke-warm and the fish had a 'hard' top. Not sure if it was under a heat lamp, but definitely had been sitting somewhere for a bit before arriving at our table. Knowing I'm not in the kitchen or do the ordering, here's a few things we noticed about our meal. The side salad was fresh and cold with a couple of green pepper strips, onion, cucumber and dressing served in a plastic container on the side. Nice option. The soup of the day was very much like a condensed version you can buy at the market. The pot roast does not appear to be the type of roast you purchase at the meat counter and throw in the over (or crock pot). It was more like a loaf of meat-pressed together bits. The texture was wrong. The spice on the Cajun salmon had a good level of spice. Mashed potatoes had large chunks of potato and little seasoning. The gravy looks like it comes from a jar. Based on taste and texture, I wouldn't be surprised if the pie came from a box. The drink prices are good, and most of the regulars were sitting at the bar, not eating. There was one large party that was eating so much food! Fish and chips, pasta, soup and way more. So clearly they have their fans. This is a case of know thyself.
