It was good stuff, except for the price. A 2 meat plate and a cup of tea for $30 and im not talking about big portions or a bucket of tea. No condiments bar either. For that price, im expecting like Rudy's where they have a section for onions, pickles and so on. Also for that price im expecting a fountain drink or something more than just a plain Jane 12 ounce can of coke. I was also hoping for more bbq sauces. This is by far the best BBQ sandwich place in El Paso. It's a brick and mortar restaurant which is nice because sometimes it's difficult to chase BBQ trucks all over El Paso. The hours are standard unlike some places that close randomly. The ladies are very nice. If you're really hungry order the "Big Johnny's." Also, DO NOT order without the mustard. For years when I would order the sandwich, I would order but hold the mustard. Then one day I tried it and I was blown away. I could not believe what I had been missing. It adds a thing that puts this sandwich over the top. Everything thing else is good as well. If ordering to go, ask for the sauce separate so you don't have a soggy mess when you get home. First time here, came based on reviews and man it didn't disappoint I got the big johnny. Brisket, pickles, mustard, bbq sauce, onions and chilies. It's a heart sammich and so freaking good. Brisket is tender and super flavorful had a mild smokey taste, the bbq sauce was pretty damn amazing. Mildly sweet had a nice tang and savor taste to it. I woulda drank this out the bottle. I have never been here or had a desire to come here until a friend of ours brought potato salad from here to a pot luck at our house. It was so yummy we had to go try more. Dine in is a mediocre experience. It is an order up counter with no service. We got tea that was warm with very little ice. But the sandwich we had was yummy and of course the potato salad is amazing. As we sat we noticed a ton of cars coming through drive through picking up what they had order for that night's dinner. Then I realized why this place always looks empty and yet it still is open. Because a lot of people order and bring it home. The BBQ sauce is good. Brisket is really good. We have been wanting to stop here for a while. They are located in a small plaza on Doniphan. Stopped on a Saturday for lunch. The staff was very friendly. They obviously have regulars that eat here as the staff knew several clients that walked in. Service was fast which is always great at a barbecue place. Ribs are served only on Saturday. We each had the 1/2 slab of rib plate with two sides. We ordered the chili beans and cole slaw. The ribs were mouth watering, fall off the bone tasty, and so did not need any barbecue sauce. My husband ate his with barbecue sauce and said the sauce was not sweet and was a great brisket sauce and not a Kansas City sauce. The chili beans were the best I've eaten. They were cooked with ground meat and not spicy. The cole slaw was tasty and had chunks of pineapple. Normally, we do not like pineapple in our cole slaw, but didn't realize it until 1/2 the slaw was eaten. It did not make the slaw sweet. Other than my husband's ribs, these are the best I've eaten in El Paso. We'll be back. Can't wait to go back! read more

We had driven past this little gem on Doniphan on multiple occasions. We finally decided to stop in a give it a try. We elected to try the "Big Johnny" sandwich (the house specialty) and also tried a couple of sides. We requested macaroni salad and coleslaw. They were out of coleslaw, so we substituted potato salad. The sandwich was delicious! The brisket was juicy and tender. The toppings of onion, pickles, and sauce were just the right amount. An excellent sandwich! The macaroni salad was not to my liking. It had an odd flavor (cheese maybe?) I did not care for it. The potato salad was good. A nice flavor, and not over cooked or mushy. We needed a place to eat lunch and I searched for a good BBQ place and Johnny's Pit came up. We've been on the road for 5 days and this was the worst meal we had. I asked the lady in the front to give me anything that freshly cooked today and she said, everything is fresh daily. I reiterated if the brisket if fresh then that's what I will order. She assured me that everything is fresh. That was far from the truth. The brisket was super dry and the pork was the same. They might have fresh bbq ribs on Saturday but the meat i got was probably made on Saturday and it's been 4 days. Do not rely on the 5 star, check how many people actually reviewed the place. Very good bbq sandwich but honestly, order to go. Why you ask? Rarely come here but found them open and stopped in for a sandwich after doing some shopping. When you pay with a card the tip is asked for upfront. I didn't tip, I tip at the end. Got my food, girls went back to sitting in the dining area while complaining out loud how tired she was. Place was empty. Lady with very strong perfume came in and sat with the 2 ladies and I almost left, the stench of her perfume was so strong. Girls then began talking to each other loudly from the kitchen to the dining area I couldn't hear myself think. Sandwich was great, salad was weird, atmosphere was atrocious. Pretty tough for me to give 5 Stars for a BBQ place in El Paso, so I am giving 4 stars. First off, the food is great!!! Had the big Johnny sandwich, and a half rack of ribs (only available on Saturdays). That order fed two of us with leftovers. My only downside, not a huge fan of their sauce, but to their defense, the meat doesn't really need it - which is as it should be. Potato salad was okay, nothing to rant or rave about. I've had BBQ all over the country and while each region of the U.S. has its own flair, El Paso isn't typically known for BBQ even though the city is in Texas - a state which has some amazing BBQ places. However, Johnny's BBQ Pit is hands down one of the best places in El Paso to get some great BBQ. This is a family owned establishment and I love supporting local flavor. This place beats all the chain restaurants located in town by wide margin and offers good portions for the price. I frequently get the Big Johnny sandwich and love their potato and macaroni salad. Overall, their food is always fresh and the quality of the meat they use is good. Finding and picking out Johnny's BBQ Pit while on the West Side of El Paso is very much worth the time and I do so everytime. Highly recommend everyone give it a shot!! read more

I got a sandwich and potato salad, which totaled less than $7.50 together, including tax. The food was great! The sandwich had a generous serving of meat, I couldn't finish it alone. The the meat was very tender and well seasoned, however the only reason I did not give it five stars was because it is not traditional "pit BBQ" (at least not the day I was there, Saturday seems to have different options). Please don't let that turn you off, because it really was great, just not quite as advertised :) I feel I should mention the potato salad. I come from southern WV/eastern KY, where potato salad is a very serious accoutrement. The Big Johnny sandwich tastes much like a mom's home cooked bbq sandwich. It includes brisket (very tender), pickles, mustard, and onions. I think it reminds me of home made quality due to the simple yet delicious taste of the sandwich. One definite positive for me is that the sandwich and their bbq sauce tastes more like southern bbq than texas bbq. Texas bbq I think have a tendency to taste smoky...which I hate! And much like a southern bbq, Johnny's bbq sauce tastes tangy and sweet. Their sauce definitely wins me over...very good! We were only in El Paso for a day and wanted to try some Texas BBQ. Johnny's is a small, hole-in-the-wall family business, super casual...and SUPER good. We lived in the south for 5 years, and if this place was in our home town, we'd be eating there at least once a week. My husband got the Big Johnny (brisket sandwich with all the fixin's) and I got the pulled pork sandwich, and we both barely came up for air once we started attacking those sandwiches. Just to let everyone know this place is under new ownership. When I first had this barbeque about 4 years ago I was not a fan. But I have been there recently and the level of quality has increase greatly. The Brisket is moist and tender. The pork ribs (Only available on Saturdays) are delicious and are worth the trip out to Doniphan Street. The pricing is right and the helpings are right along with it. Staff is friendly and the place is relaxed. The part about the railing - just fix it already, please. Try this place once and you won't be disappointed. The only negative about this place is the mustard. They don't have fresh mustard in a bottle. They just packets that are old and the mustard is pasty. read more

I CANNOT BELIEVE I'm the first to review Johnny's Pit Barbeque. This joint is legendary for it's Big Johnny sandwich, a sort of double-meat sliced brisket sandwich (with or without a slice of Kraft Singles cheesefood), green chile sauce, mustard, and onion. I like mine extra lean, but the regular Big Johnny is excellent, too. Not too much fat, but enough to give the beef great bbq flavor. Smoked on site in this gas station-turned bbq joint, the beef is about as good as it gets. As the sign says, don't lean on the rail where you slide your plastic tray, or the duct tape that holds it in place will give way and the entire rail and your Big Johnny will end up on the floor. read more
