Went for dinner at Larkspur Landing and saw that Johnny's was open. I had previously read on their menu board that they have a wheat free donut, so thought I'd stop to see if they still had one I could buy to eat the next morning. I was in luck. As the nice employee told me, they don't list it as gluten free since it is fried in the same oil as the other doughnuts. My system appears to be fine in those situations, so I bought a Frittah Thang. As planned, I ate it the following morning. First bite was tasty, but a little dry, so I decided to zap it in the microwave for 20 seconds with a damp paper towel. That made all the difference. The doughnut was moist and the blueberries were warm and juicy. BTW, didn't know it had blueberries or raisins when I bought it. I hadn't asked since I like both. The blueberries were a tasty surprise. Here's the description on Johnny's site for the Frittah Thang: Frittah Thang (Wheat Free) It's true! With the texture of an Old Fashioned doughnut, our wheat free doughnut will blow you away. Since our facility does use wheat, this doughnut may not be ideal for treat-seekers with Celiac. My dinner companions also ordered doughnuts to eat later. I was told my Frittah Thang tasted much better than the Apple fritter. They said the Apple fritter didn't have much flavor. I was given a mixed review on the lime doughnut. Filling was good, like eating key lime. The doughnut dough was good, but a little too sweet. The filling and dough together did not compliment each other. Both people are willing to return to try another doughnut and of course I would get a Frittah Thang again. Cute donut spot! I checked this out around Thanksgiving last year after a lunch for work. It's in a plaza with tons of foods and shops nearby. I ordered half a dozen of random donuts based on the worker's suggestion (from chocolate glazed, blueberry glazed (?), sprinkles with autumn colors, lime poppy seed etc). The donuts are super thick, not your typical thin donuts. It's smooth and the fluffy. I shared them with my family and they thought it was okay, nothing impressive and nobody wanted seconds. This is a donut stand that serves cake donuts, donut holes, croduhs (croissant and donut hybrid ), coffee, and soft serve. It is pretty expensive but worth trying at least once. I tried their chocolate chip croduh which was very flaky, a sweet potato glazed donut which was super air-y and chewy, and a seasonal pumpkin cake donut. All were really Unique and tasty. Admittedly I am a donut lover and seek out gourmet donuts when given the opportunity. A quick stop at Larkspur Landing, aka Marin Country mart recently I discovered this new addition to the complex. Actually I'm not sure exactly when it opened but a welcome addition nonetheless. I looked over the selection and picked the cream filled cronut. The texture and taste were delicious, and made me wish I had picked up a few more as we drive away. This Larkspur location is a but different than the San Rafael location. Larkspur doesn't have an entrance where you can come inside to be warm. Only the people that work for Johnny Doughnuts are inside with the doughnuts. This is like their food truck but with no generator. Luckily there are tables to sit down to enjoy the doughnut. Larkspur location has an hour of 7am-6pm compare to San Rafael 7am-2pm. I like that Larkspur location is open till 6pm but hopefully there are still doughnuts available. Plenty of parking at this location. No need to drive around the block to find parking. For sure I will return to Larkspur for Johnny Doughnuts. Johnny Doughnuts is a mixed blessing. Creative flavors and bright colors on my generously sized sweet fried foods makes me smile. The bad news is these are not low calorie treats, not by a long shot and chosing a location directly across the parking lot from Soulcycle has to involve a strange sense of humor. Johnny's focus is on giant bread-y donuts (kind of the Noah's Bagels of the donut crowd) with the majority of their donuts being in the raised glazed or raised frosted variety. You'll find creative frosting flavors including blueberry, passionfruit, and raspberry, and a sweet potato donut with a sugar coating, for those who don't want glaze. Johnny's also carries a cronut that is unholy decadence, filled with vanilla cream. Some things you just won't find at Johnny, which as someone who misses the insane donut variety of the PNW (I admit it, I miss my Top Pot) given their limited selection. For example, they don't have cake based donuts, which is half of the donut universe in my opinion. (I do understand they occasionally carry old-fashioneds/cake donuts from the photos of other Yelpers, but I haven't seen them after two visits.). I'd also love to see a cronut version without the cream filling, because their version is too sweet even for me. Was so excited to try Johnny Doughnuts because my fiance really hyped them up. We stopped by early on a Saturday Morning. Busy, but the line wasn't long. Lots of Marinfolk enjoying their doughnuts outside of the shop. The guys who were working were so friendly and absolutely great. We got 6 doughnuts. LOL. They were good, but in my opinion, they were a bit dry. My favorite was that classic, original doughnut. Coffee is great and I love the aesthetic of the place. Very warm and inviting. This was perhaps the first ritual we adopted on a Sunday when we decided to go for a drive after a few months in lock down. It has become our COMFORT staple. Birthday Breakfasts, Mother's Day, Father's Day.. The Sugar Daddy (raised dough with Sugar Sprinkles) for my girls, the "Fritta Thing"(spikey old fashioned thing with blueberries dotted through out-perhaps THE best thing there secretly despite it not looking "smart") for my husband and me?~I bounce between Raised Glazed, Old Fashioned Glazed, Old Fashioned classics or revolt for the Raspberry Jelly filled Bismark~ it's ALL excellent AND SO FRESH~rarely keeps well to the next afternoon. 24 hours is the limit on these IMO. There is usually a line and everyone keeps their distance (well usually), soo it may seem long but it's not too bad. If you are near the center entry to heart of the mall~you absolutly have time to let the person in front of you take their child too the Loo. There is much civility in this line out of all the places I have experienced in the last 7 months. Last week, a guy was arriving near my exact time, but he backed up in a HANDS FREE PICK UP parking spot, made a call, opened his trunk and someone walked out and put it in there. So there is that level of SAFETY & distance available too! Once you arrive at the viewing of the donuts, you wait for the person in front of you to finish looking your way as they talk through a semi closed & screened window telling the person their order. YOU should be eyeing what is new, looks good or check for your faves! A lot is not even coming from that window, they have fresher back ups on a shelf behind them~so don't worry if you think they are all out of something. After you get your order in, it's step to the next marking where your items are being rung up and order some drinks if you adding those~for us, their COLD BREW is delicious (and we are quite snobby about that)! I pay via ApplePay, it's all touch less unless you are tipping. So maybe bring some cash for tips. But there is a HUGE jar of pump for Gel Hand Sanitizer to complete your broken TOUCH FREE shopping experience. read more

I knew it was going to be a 'fancier' donut, when I saw in their name, that it was spelled 'doughnuts'. Faaansaaay. Basically a stall in an upscale and outdoor retail mall. Order at a window, then take it with you, either away or at some of the outdoor tables. Already covid rules ready. I'm sure they had to do very little to comply, unlike most other food services who had to jump through many hoops. Tried a couple of things. Maple Old Fashioned (5*) Damn son, it don't get much better than this. Supple old fashioned dough that crumbles softly and pretty much melts in the mouth. Don't know if I got lucky with the timing, but it was WARM. A warm donut is so rare, that when I get one, it's like finding a unicorn, thus inducing the happy dance. The maple didn't come in the form of that stupid rubbery glaze that many divey donut shops love to slop. But rather true maple syrup was either in the dough, or brushed into the donut. Nothing shiny nor sticky, just maple sweetness imbedded into the meltingly tender flesh of this cake-y concoction. The other donut I tried I can't remember what they called it, but it was basically their version of a Jelly Donut (2.5*). This was no where near as impressive. It's a monster raised donut with no hole, therefore injected with a fruit filling, raspberry was my choice. The good is the fruit filling was super natural and not a jelly at all. Rather it was like a thick raspberry coulis, much like what you'd see on a fancy dessert plate. I really liked it. But the donut itself was so huge and bulky that you can take 6-7 big bites out of it, and still not hit any filled center. And this didn't come warm like the other one, so it was definitely more 'tough'. Tougher actually than most raised that I've ever got. Not as airy. So I'd pass on this next time. I also tried to get their version of a Cronut, as I love them. But around the lunch hour, they were out, womp womp. So that's why I ended up with their fruit filled. Iced Coffee was just okay. I don't say this often, but I'd even rather have a Starbucks. But with friendly service who was patient with me ogling each donut through the glass, I'll round to an A-ok 3. read more

Lemon zest poppy donut: was my absolute favorite. Did I mention these donuts are HUGE? This tastes so flavorful and is so fragrant of lemon, almost like a tart lemon merengue. Sweet potato donut: started off being my least favorite but quickly become my top two. It's very "yeasty" which I know doesn't sound appealing but I sweat it is. It doesn't taste like sweet potato, if that's what you're hoping for. It has this bready-ness to it that isn't very sweet. Like a sweet bread, you have to try it. Fritta thang: this was good, really sweet. It tastes like your typical apple fritter but with a fun shape. Tiger tail: I was hoping for something a bit more interesting, but this is just a glazed donut with some chocolate drizzled on top. COVID note: Currently they're 7-4 every day and are wearing PPE while serving. This location is about 40 minutes from me, but 100% worth the drive. I fell in love with Johnny Doughnuts at an off the grid event in this marketplace years ago, and have craved them ever since. I am not in this area very often but their doughnuts are vastly superior to any others and therefore make the small journey worth the trouble. The location is in a plaza where there's plenty of great food - shake shack, hogs, Marin Brewery, etc. Johnny, from the outside, looks like a place that serve great donuts/breakfast food. I elected to go for the simple chocolate donut as I didn't have much time to decide. I think this rating is purely on my taste/perspective. I felt the dough was a little too much and it wasn't as soft as I liked. However I would imagine that their other donuts would be more flavorful and tasty.
