I'm so freaking done with this place. I had the worst experience trying to come to this bakery for the last 3 years straight every single time I've come it is closed, no signage on the door just the closed sign. I have driven 1.5 hrs each way just to come here and what a damn disappointment. I even looked up the hours and it says open till 2 pm, I got here at 9:45 am and it is closed, the lights are off. I don't care if you're baked goods are from the heavens at this point because this back and forth whiplash I'm getting trying to come here is not worth it at all. The owner Karen is just as kind as people say - she had just closed when we walked by but gave us a little baggie of leftover cookies to-go. I go here at least twice a week, usually for the Nutella (pronounced, "Queen Aman"), chocolate croissants, plain croissants, and breakfast sandwich. The proprietress is amazing. She is practically alone in this place with the exception of an occasional helper but she puts in huge hours not just for over-the-counter goods but for the thriving catering business she does. As such, the shop is closed sometimes for that reason, as well as being a busy Marin-ite. So, to those who may miss it being open, I suggest you keep trying, and if you have requests, try calling and leaving a message as she is quite responsive and busy making amazing breads and pastries! read more

I love this place! I would go to Karen again and again for custom baked goods. First of all, whenever I stop by Mill Valley Bakery, Karen is there baking up another incredibly delicious creation. She's always a pleasure to speak with, and she's such a lovely person. I love going into the bakery to talk with her and see what she's created - whatever I get from sweet pastries to savory BLTs on baguettes, it is always on another level of deliciousness and freshness. Karen made a custom order of apple cider cinnamon sugar baked donuts for our wedding this September, and our guests were raving about them. I've had multiple people ask after the wedding where they can get them, and many told me they were the best apple cider donuts they've ever had! I agree, and I grew up in New England so I've tried MANY apple cider donuts in my life and Karen's are better than any I've ever had. By far the best bakery in town. She makes the tastiest baguettes, pastries, and cookies. I grew up eating focaccia every day in Italian neighborhoods around the world, and in 23 years living in San Francisco, I have never had any as good as hers. Her flourless chocolate cake is delicious if you ever get the opportunity to try one. She even brought cannoli to the neighborhood and nailed it, and now others are copying. In the last 3 years, five bakeries have popped up in Mill Valley, and the rest are too overpriced and too fancy to do basic breads and pastries well. Karen nails the basics, and delivers on the special treats too, every time. Karen is one of the sweetest women I've met, and she knows my kids by name and rushes out to greet us whenever she sees us. The day we moved out of Mill Valley was a sad day because we would no longer have easy access to the Mill Valley Baking Company. That of course doesn't stop us from finding reasons to return. Namely, the enticing variety of pastries, including cookies and scones! We don't always get what we want (either sold out or not available) but there's always a happy alternative to tickle our tastebuds. Today we opted for savories: a BLT sandwich and an English muffin with bacon & egg. Scrumptious and satisfying! For dessert, a half dozen buttery madeleines. (If I'm on a diet, it's called a madeleine diet!) I am happy that the Mill Valley Baking Company came to town, I just wish we had not moved so soon after the bakery opened. read more

I walk by this place numerous times on my dog walks during the week & stop in occasionally. When I do it never disappoints. Today was one of those days. I came away with two cinnamon sugar swirl things, (I wish I knew what they were called!) & a baguette since I needed to buy one later anyways. Yes I absolutely famished when I purchased it, but those swirl things took me to heaven. They literally melted in my mouth. The baguette was far superior to the one I would've gotten at Safeway. This was a happy accidental find but I got th English muffin breakfast sandwich and this was the BEST I have ever tried! As a former pastry chef( and passionate home baker), I know how hard it is to run a bakery( long hours). We stopped by around 10ish on a weekday. I saw the owner wrapping up egg sandwiches and I asked her what they included. She said egg, bacon and cheese. I should have pressed a bit further, I can't eat runny yolks and when I opened it up, I saw it had a runny yolk. I won't mark off for that. The sandwich was a bit bland, it needed an aioli or another sauce. I asked for a packet of pepper/salt and she didn't have any. I also bought the one frosted blueberry scone that was left and a choc. chip cookie. I paid 12 bucks for all. The egg sandwich was a bargain at 6 bucks, less expensive that a gross egg McMuffin. read more

I've eaten pastries all over the world and what Karen Fong is doing at Mill Valley Baking Co is at the very highest level of this artform... anywhere. There is a subtlety and near-etheric quality to her pastries that equals the absolute best patisseries of Paris. (But hey... this may not be good for my waistline!)
