I was getting very inconsistent donuts at some point and I don't know if sales are up and they're selling out more consistently or they've just gotten better about not rolling over any leftovers but the last couple months we decided it was time to try them again and it's been nothing but great donuts. I've lived across the street from this place for a decade and finally tried it on a whim. I walked in around 10am, a kindly old fellow looked up from his paper and asked me if I was ready for the best donuts in Novato. I shrugged, "Why not?" Not taking him too seriously. So I ordered a dozen and a coffee to go. When I got home and opened the box, it only took a few bites to realize they were the best donuts I've EVER had! The dough is amazing. The glazed plain and twist donuts just melted in my mouth. I asked for a raspberry donut and it was filled on the spot with fresh jam made from real raspberries instead of the sugary jelly most places use. So best jelly donut ever. Add that to the list. The crumb cake donuts are absolutely delicious! The cinnamon twist has real cinnamon! The old fashioned was perfect. All 12 donuts were AMAZING. Each and every one was made with skill and care. There's nothing negative to say about Novato's Great Donuts. If you're a regular, expect to be greeted early in the morning by name and with a smile. I remember coming to Great Donuts when I was a youngster and the husband and wife combo were some of the nicest people. I was merely a kid, but they would hold a conversation with me and make me feel somewhat special. As for the donuts themselves, there's simply no comparison. The warm and sugary treats are not overwhelmingly sweet, such as those of 7-11 or Krispy Kreme. The shop has just about every signature donut you'd come to expect: maple bars, donut holes, bear claws, sprinkles, etc. Granted, it's been years since I've visited Great Donuts, but I was in the area and it was still pretty early and decided to break my diet. The shop is exactly as I remember it. It's small with only a few tables for customers who want to enjoy their coffee. The delicious smell of donuts hits you immediately and gets your taste buds going. I went with half a dozen of donut holes for $.75 cents and they were just as good as I remember them.
