John did an outstanding job building our new deck. From start to finish, he was professional, detail-oriented, and kept both the inside and outside of our home incredibly clean while working. Our previous deck lacked stability and never felt fully safe, but John built us a beautifully crafted, sturdy deck that gives our family real peace of mind. We couldn't be happier with the quality of the work and would highly recommend him. read more

John, please justify 22k in labor for a 5 x 8 basic bathroom. Here's a breakdown for what needed to be done: - gut job is less than a day's work - minor framing is around 2 hours - rough plumbing - fixtures in same place is 2 hours - rough electric is 3 hours - new door install is 2 hours, - insulation is 1 hour - sheetrock and spackling is 4 hours - tile is 4 hours - grout is 2 hours - painting is 3 hours - fixture installs is 6 hours - lighting and fan installs - 2 hours Total hours - 39 Double the hours - 80 (to account for slow work/padding) 39 hours - labor works out to be $564 / hour 80 hours - is $275 / hour Even factoring in business costs, it's still way over priced. Your quote was $10,000 over my next highest quote, and I got four quotes. I've done four bathrooms and know the process. With materials, your total would have been over $32,000. Again, for a 5x8 basic bathroom, keeping the fixtures in the same place, the cost was exorbitant. read more

Johansen Contracting did an outstanding job helping us clean out, purge, donate items, and pack for the move from the house we are selling. I've worked in real estate and property management for over 25 years and have worked with hundreds of contractors, so I know the difference between average service and exceptional service. Johansen Contracting was professional, efficient, respectful of our home, and made a stressful process so much easier. Their team worked quickly, communicated clearly, and handled everything with care and attention to detail. I truly appreciated how reliable and thorough they were from start to finish. I would highly recommend Johansen Contracting to anyone needing help with a clean-out, purge, donation, or packing project, or any home improvement project. read more

John was great. When he came to our house for the estimate he helped identify some issue he could fixed and then gave me an itemized break down of what things cost. We couldn't do everything I the list but he helped work with us on our needs. When him and his team came to the house they worked quickly and left the house exactly how it was before they got there. I definitely recommend him to anyone! read more

Johansen General Contracting went above and beyond. I got a quote the same day I talked to John, started work shortly thereafter. We had 7 brick/cinderblock/poured concrete stairs that were starting to deteriorate due to their age. He was able to strip them to the foundation and build it back up new. This was not a small project but he had a full team work on the project and completed well within the timeline. The price, service, and quality was great and plan to use them for the other set of stairs and some roof work. read more

John Johansen is an honest, absolute professional. Recently did some work involving masonry and gutters. My garage was taking in a considerable amount of water through its walls, so much so that we were thinking we would need a french drain system, which would've been in excess of $10k. John walked through the property, identified the issue and gave me a quote via email promptly. We were happy with both the quoted price and the level of expertise shown. I had called for additional quotes before selecting Johansen, one from a mason and another from a waterproofing company, the mason said "$10k for a french drain" while the waterproofing company determined it was not a candidate and had suggested doing everything John had proposed. The day the work started I was very happy to see that John was actually working along his guys, having worked with other contractors in the past this is not always the case. My wife and I are very thankful to John. He took the time to clearly explain the scope of the work, he even showed us a few things around the house, for routine maintenance, being this is our first home. When the work was finished everything was cleaned up perfectly, and the work was completed in a day and a half. Truly a good guy, very generous and highly recommended. read more

John is amazing to work with he is knowledgeable, organize, and thorough. He and his crew did an amazing job, installing new gutters, fixing an underground pipe and rerouting the water. I had damage to steps, retaining walls and driveway repair. This was all beautifully restored. I highly recommend John. I am planning on using John for another job at my home. In addition, his pricing of his job is fair and his detailed estimate is accurate. Joanne C. read more

To say that we needed our garage repaired is an understatement. After years of being on the receiving end of rushing rainwater courtesy of a serious slope, the structure was on a hard lean. Plus there was ivy infiltrating the back wall, roots disrupting the slab, and a tree trunk pushing through the foundation. Yeah. That bad. When John saw it to give an estimate, he didn't run. He fully explained all the ways he could help - including pouring a slab and adding an irrigation system. He quoted a price that was fair. And most importantly, when it came down to it he delivered. Even when an unexpected setback threatened to derail the project, he was on site immediately providing solutions and getting construction back on track - and ahead of schedule. But it doesn't stop there. John was always easy to reach and got back to me right away if I had any questions - although usually he had explained everything to me so thoroughly I didn't need to ask. Plus, he was at my house most days just to make sure his guys were getting the job done right. For him, it was never "just a garage". It was providing the best service possible. This guy knows his stuff and goes above and beyond. And he's one of the honest contractors out there, which is saying a lot if you've ever had to hunt. But don't just take my word for it. Take a look at the before and afters and see for yourself. read more

We worked with John and his team when we first bought our house in early 2021, he even volunteered to join us in the home inspection! In May 2022 we did a kitchen refresh and the Johansen Team executed the project really well. We had new countertops installed, installed a new faucet and sink, tiled the backsplash, and had the walls painted. It may seem like minor updates but the overall effects are stunning. We are so happy with the final result and as always, we found working with John and his team to be easy and efficient. Every time I work with John I'll submit a review because to find a contractor that is honest, trustworthy, and reliable is something to celebrate! read more

Professional, helpful, and extremely responsive! My husband and I recently purchased a house and needed some work done, John was able to quickly set up a walk through and send over a very thorough quote for us. Due to personal budget constraints we weren't able to set any up any work done just yet but once ready we will be reaching back out to John and his team :) Highly Recommend! read more

John Johansen to the rescue!!! I contacted John Johansen to assist in an urgent matter regarding the framing of a fireplace. The work of my previous contractor failed the town building inspection. John responded to my inquiry immediately, met with the town building inspector, then met with me to discuss his plan to fix the failed work of the previous contractor. We scheduled the job and John got the job done! John is honest, thorough, and has an eye for every detail. I HIGHLY recommend Johansen General Contracting and I will definitely use them again. read more

My husband and I got our first home in 2016 and we knew that we would need to find someone. Johansen just finished his third project with us and it keeps getting better! He is totally flexible with our schedule, honest and upfront with pricing, and the value of his work cannot be beat. First we started with a window replacement in our son's room. Next project was unplanned, we discovered mold in our garage. His crew cleared it and when they re insulated our ducts it looks better than before! Now we have a brand new driveway. He even saw that there needed to be better drainage on the driveway next to our steps and made sure it happened. Great to work with and the results are phenomenal! read more

We purchased an old victorian house and my front porch needed a complete replacement. I found John on Yelp after reading all the five stars reviews. I can't agree more with everyone that John is a rare find. Knowledgeable, fair pricing, gets back to me instantly every time I have a question, get the job done AHEAD of schedule!!! He even changed the lock of my back door and fix my broken drain pipe without charging me extra! I am so happy with my new porch and my new drain outside my basement. I can't wait to work with him again on my next project. I have worked with many contractors over the years, Johansen is by far the best and most trustworthy of them all. Thank you so much for making my life so much easier! read more

We have had major siding & painting jobs done by Johansen General Contracting. John Johansen responds quickly regarding estimates. He gives a clear explanation about every detail of the job. He checks in daily to make sure everything is perfect. His staff does excellent work . They always remove all the debris when done. We feel he gives an honest & fair price and never tries to push things you don't need or want. We highly recommend this company. read more

I found John on Yelp when I was looking for someone to do some work on a home I had just purchased. There is definitely a reason he has so many five star reviews. John and his team do whatever work they're doing throughly and efficiently. John's attention to detail and the care he puts into his work (and how he treats his team) is something that's really hard to find nowadays. From patching a hole in our garage roof, adding support to our front porch, work in our kitchen, and everything in between John walked us through what he would do, how he would do it, and what we should be prepared for in the future. John is straightforward and trustworthy, he isn't just trying to make as much off of the job as possible, like other contractors we spoke too. We will definitely be calling him whenever we need work done in the future. You should too. read more

Professional. Thorough. And friendly. John Johansen put on a new composite deck (with new underlying beams) on our downtown Jersey City brownstone. He and his three guys worked through the day to complete the job fast and efficiently. John has excellent attention to detail. We appreciate his critical eye and high standards. We brought him back to install a new storm door in the front of the building. Not only did he do a great and fast job (delivered ahead of schedule) but he noticed that our front gate was missing a latch so he threw that in too (at no charge.). He delivers high quality work and always responds quickly whenever we reach out. No job is too big or too small to ask him about. We continue to rely on him and highly recommend his team. read more

John and his team are amazing. We had water in our basement after a weekend full of rain, and within 30 minutes of calling John, he was at my house assessing the damage. We contracted Johansen in the autumn (gutter replacement, regrading, masonry repointing, foundation crack sealing) and we were absolutely pleased with the result. John advises on the right way to go about the projects and he was there himself for each job. We contracted them again in the winter (ceiling repair, interior painting/staining) and on both jobs exceeded expectations. Highly recommended. read more

My wife and I just moved into a house and we were looking for a reliable contractor and found John through Yelp and decided to call him because of the great reviews. First thing I was very impressed by was his response time. John was kind enough to spend an hour with us looking through the house and pointing out things we should fix and also keep an eye for. Being first time home owners I appreciated his time and valuable guidance. We had a water issue in the basement and day after our closing John came with his guys and did grading on side of my house. His prices are very fair and his guys left the place very clean. I highly recommend his company that's looking for a reliable and honest contractor. read more

We brought John Johansen and his team in to retile our kitchen floors and install backsplash. They did a superb job on that, but they really went the extra mile. We encountered a few hiccups along the way (asbestos, termites, and mold), but John quickly brought in specialists to address each of these areas. While the project ended up being more involved than we originally intended, John managed the whole process in a timely and professional manner. Beyond the above, John and his team also installed an additional cabinet and counter top, closed up screw and nail holes in the walls that were there when we purchased the unit, and repainted several areas of our apartment. He also coordinated with an electrician to add a ceiling fan. We are thrilled with the results and love our new kitchen. John was extremely responsive over phone and text. He and his workers tidied up at the end of each day and did a great job cleaning after the whole project was complete so that we could move everything right back in. I would definitely work with Johansen General Contracting again. read more

John and his crew are amazing. They go above and beyond to make sure the job is done correctly. They came and fixed a temp job on my foundation and made sure the house is supported and up to code. Also had miscellaneous tasks like paver steps leading up to the house were loose. Originally I thought it was just he one but they made sure that the whole fight of steps were secured and had a fresh slathering of cement. There was also a loose block of limestone in the backyard that they addressed. Stress cracks on the side of the house were filled and a door frame stripped sealed and painted looking good as new again. Once the spring rolls around I'll be sure to give them my repeat business and take care of the rest of the concrete that I need fixed. Showed up on time and left early with everything plus more. They removed excess near one of my foundation drainage runs and removed the previous owners glued mirrors on the exterior of the wall in the back yard. Truly going above and beyond. What a stand up bunch of guys. A++ read more

Wow. Where do you start when you have so many great things to say about someone that has has swooped in and saved your house on so many occasions? Well let's get started. John isn't just any contractor. He's an great, honorable person. A real family man that you can trust your home with. He is RELIABLE. I have called him in a panic on multiple occasions and he has come right over in 20 minutes or less - always knows exactly what to do. Just had some work done by John. He replied right away. Showed up with a mask and was very respectful of my space, etc. Got a quote which was very reasonably priced. Everything was completed within the time that we set. We're very happy with the work and professionalism. I would def go to him again in the future. Strongly recommend. read more

John did work on my apartment in Hoboken right after I purchased it a year ago. He is a colorful character and was nice enough to come give me a free estimate before I closed which is not standard. He removed popcorn ceilings and painted. The work was completed actually in less time than his estimate and I am very happy with the results. Even my building's super commented on how the ceilings were done the right way. Only hiccup was with getting the insurance paperwork my building required to be filled out. I had to send it back to the lady he had me contact multiple times because she kept filling it out wrong. However, that's minor compared to having a reliable contractor who sticks to his quote and has the job done fast and right. There are not many of them out there. read more

We highly recommend Johansen General Contracting. We found John through another great service Jimmy's Garage who did a exceptional job as well. Good work! Trustworthy! Had them replace a basement window and they did the job professionally.

John is flat out a life saver. The freezer in my refrigerator broke and flooded the kitchen in one of my units. I called at least a half of dozen contractors to see if they could come out to assess the damage and no one followed up. At my wits end I called John and he picked up immediately to my surprise. He came out the next day and paired me with an amazing mold remediation company and did the repairs to my units. What I thought would be a multiweek project, turn out to be a 48 hour job after the mold remediation company ensured that the water did not cause any damage to my property. John saved me thousands of dollars and every time I call him, he's always there to help. His team is extremely professional and kind. I highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for not only a general contractor, but a mentor/teacher as well. Thank you, John, for all your amazing work and I can't wait to work with you more in the future! read more

Awesome. John was referred to us by someone who uses his services often, and we can see why! His quotes are reasonable, his work is high quality, and he and his crew are professional. He initially came to repair the front steps to our building, but also repaired our sidewalk to comply with our building insurance requests. He even installed a handrail for the back steps as a courtesy!! Woot woot!! He then took the time to walk around the building with us, and explain what should be done, what wasn't done properly, and some simple fixes we could do on our own. This was immensely helpful especially since one of the Owner's water heater was eroded and needed to be changed to comply with the fire code. He is very knowledgable and just a good guy! We will continue to use his services for our building projects! I can't say enough about these guys... read more

Fit us in on a tight schedule and did a great job fixing our sidewalk.

John helped us with some minor repairs and then later to do a face-lift on our kitchen. He is knowledgeable and patient and was able to meet our very demanding schedule and wants. I'm writing this review because John's work is quality and timely, his communication is excellent, and his business morals/ethics should be the standard for all businesses to strive for. I've been away from my condo for the last year and a half (military deployment followed by training) and had a leak coming from above my window. John worked with me and my girlfriend, who lives with me, to give a quick estimate and repaired the leak. I had paid John for the repair, however my HOA accidentally sent him a check as well. John immediately called me and sent the check back to my HOA. I will be calling John for all of my future repairs and recommend him to anybody in the area. Thank you, John. read more

WOW. Where do I begin? My husband and I have never worked with anyone as reliable, efficient, and amazing as John and his team. It's hard to find a trustworthy contractor who isn't going to try and take advantage of their clients, but John is just an all around down to earth and trustworthy guy. He and his team truly know what they're doing, are extremely detailed, and leave no stone unturned. John provides impeccable service and makes you feel like you're the only client he has, which is so refreshing. My husband and I have already decided that he is the only person we're going to from now on for all of our house's needs. Seriously, look no further than John and his team! read more

We hired John and his team to do interior painting and minor wall and door frame repairs in our new-to-us house. John spent 45 minutes doing a detailed walk-through of the house with me to generate an estimate. He pointed out both things we had noticed needed to be addressed as well as other details we hadn't considered, asking questions and providing helpful suggestions throughout. He documented the scope of work in a detailed fixed-price estimate, including paint. John and his team arrived on time and did high quality work, finishing earlier than expected and doing a great cleanup. John also noticed a gutter pipe that needed a little additional length and fixed it free of charge. We are really happy with the work and will talk to him about upcoming work in the living room in a few months' time. I should also note that John was able to fit our work in before we moved into the house, which we really appreciate, given that August is a very busy time of year. read more

John and his crew worked on a couple of projects at our home in Brookdale. We needed an area of our kitchen ceiling patched after we had to cut out a 3x3 ft piece in order to fix a previous plumbing issue. It now looks as if there was never an issue there to begin with! We also had a small 24 sq ft back entry way/porch that was in dire need of repair due to rotting wood. John quickly assessed the area and noticed that the problem was that rain water from the attached gutter was seeping under the porch and rotting it from the ground up. Considering that the rain water had no other option for egress, he suggested we go with limestone and concrete, instead of wood, since it would last longer and solve the rotting issue. Out of all of the suggestions we received from various other contractors, John was the only one that thought outside of the box! His quote for both projects were in line with what the other contractors had asked for, but his solution made the most sense. John and his team are extremely professional, took care of our home as if it were their own, were on time every day and finished a day earlier than expected. I would highly recommend John and his team for any home project and I look forward to working with him again. We've found our guy! read more
