Shortly after my wife and I bought our first house, we identified certain items requiring redress and were not sure where to start. A trusted friend of ours recommended I reach out to John for some advice. You'd think from our first interaction that I'd known John for years--he spent a considerable amount of time talking to me and offered to come by in person as soon as he was free to evaluate what needed to be done and help us make a plan. True to his word, John came by shortly after we spoke and took his time going from room to room, both listening to our concerns and questions, as well as making observations of his own. We came up with a plan in multiple parts. Each was soon realized and within a month, we'd addressed more then half of the items we wanted addressed. In the months that followed, we continued to call John for projects or advice on what projects were worthwhile, if at all. He became (and remains--more on that later) our go to contractor. These projects ranged from very small to mid-sized, and he always made time in his schedule for us between home visits to plan, phone calls to discuss scope or cost, and emails back and forth to iron out scopes of work and details. The key takeaway here is that John was always very accessible and communication was constant. As the seasons changed, so did our projects and associated needs. John always made it work. We recently had a sudden and stressful water issue in our bedroom. John had a contact for water remediation and got us in touch right away, and made sure his guys were on site immediately after so we had a wall up as soon as possible. Interspersed throughout all of the above, and other projects, we had plumbing and electrical needs. John has contacts for both, but knew we had professionals in those fields we know and liked to work with as well. John never pressured us to use his contacts and was always willing to work with whoever we wanted to, stressing our comfort and peace of mind with every job. We are actively working with John on several items, small and large, and our positive experience remains consistent. John's crew, which we have met many times, is fantastic. They are polite, hard working, and always showed up a few minutes early. They have always been respectful of our home and property and clean up after themselves. John's approach to jobs, scopes of work, and costs has always been extremely transparent and in our view, very fair. We have never felt overcharged or strung along and the handful of times we raised cost concerns, John worked with us to alleviate them as much as possible. John had never pushed us into spending more money than we wanted, or needed to. He's talked us out of certain projects in favor of a more cost effective options, or not pursuing them at all for practical reasons. As both a person and professional, John is kind, understanding, and thoughtful. He has never brushed off our concerns and explained things as many times as needed to make us comfortable. He was always available for questions--even when he didn't need to be. He has gone out of his way numerous times to resolve small issues that were on our minds solely for the sake of alleviating our concerns more quickly. My wife and I have come to view John as a dear friend and are very grateful to have him in our lives. Our oldest son loves construction vehicles, tools, and big trucks. Of course, John has many trucks to the delight of our son, who talks about him all the time. Every truck we see is "John's truck" and he is ecstatic when he sees him. He pretends to fix things around the house with a toy toolset and tool belt--which John gave him for his birthday. This was one of many, many kindnesses John has shown our son, and you can tell how much our son values his interactions with John. Knowing firsthand how stressful anything construction/house related can be, it is immeasurably valuable to have someone reliable and honest to work with, and we are so fortunate to have found that with John and his crew. John Johansen is an honest, absolute professional. Recently did some work involving masonry and gutters. My garage was taking in a considerable amount of water through its walls, so much so that we were thinking we would need a french drain system, which would've been in excess of $10k. John walked through the property, identified the issue and gave me a quote via email promptly. We were happy with both the quoted price and the level of expertise shown. I had called for additional quotes before selecting Johansen, one from a mason and another from a waterproofing company, the mason said "$10k for a french drain" while the waterproofing company determined it was not a candidate and had suggested doing everything John had proposed. The day the work started I was very happy to see that John was actually working along his guys, having worked with other contractors in the past this is not always the case. My wife and I are very thankful to John. He took the time to clearly explain the scope of the work, he even showed us a few things around the house, for routine maintenance, being this is our first home. In May 2022 we did a kitchen refresh and the Johansen Team executed the project really well. To say that we needed our garage repaired is an understatement. After years of being on the receiving end of rushing rainwater courtesy of a serious slope, the structure was on a hard lean. Plus there was ivy infiltrating the back wall, roots disrupting the slab, and a tree trunk pushing through the foundation. Yeah. That bad. When John saw it to give an estimate, he didn't run. He fully explained all the ways he could help - including pouring a slab and adding an irrigation system. He quoted a price that was fair. And most importantly, when it came down to it he delivered. We encountered a few hiccups along the way (asbestos, termites, and mold), but John quickly brought in specialists to address each of these areas. Beyond the above, John and his team also installed an additional cabinet and counter top, closed up screw and nail holes in the walls that were there when we purchased the unit, and repainted several areas of our apartment. John and his crew are amazing. They go above and beyond to make sure the job is done correctly. They came and fixed a temp job on my foundation and made sure the house is supported and up to code. Also had miscellaneous tasks like paver steps leading up to the house were loose. Originally I thought it was just he one but they made sure that the whole fight of steps were secured and had a fresh slathering of cement. There was also a loose block of limestone in the backyard that they addressed. Stress cracks on the side of the house were filled and a door frame stripped sealed and painted looking good as new again. Once the spring rolls around I'll be sure to give them my repeat business and take care of the rest of the concrete that I need fixed. Showed up on time and left early with everything plus more. They removed excess near one of my foundation drainage runs and removed the previous owners glued mirrors on the exterior of the wall in the back yard. Truly going above and beyond. John did work on my apartment in Hoboken right after I purchased it a year ago. He is a colorful character and was nice enough to come give me a free estimate before I closed which is not standard. He removed popcorn ceilings and painted. The work was completed actually in less time than his estimate and I am very happy with the results. Even my building's super commented on how the ceilings were done the right way. Only hiccup was with getting the insurance paperwork my building required to be filled out. I had to send it back to the lady he had me contact multiple times because she kept filling it out wrong. He initially came to repair the front steps to our building, but also repaired our sidewalk to comply with our building insurance requests. He even installed a handrail for the back steps as a courtesy!! Woot woot!! I'm writing this review because John's work is quality and timely, his communication is excellent, and his business morals/ethics should be the standard for all businesses to strive for. I've been away from my condo for the last year and a half (military deployment followed by training) and had a leak coming from above my window. John and his crew worked on a couple of projects at our home in Brookdale. We needed an area of our kitchen ceiling patched after we had to cut out a 3x3 ft piece in order to fix a previous plumbing issue. It now looks as if there was never an issue there to begin with! We also had a small 24 sq ft back entry way/porch that was in dire need of repair due to rotting wood. John quickly assessed the area and noticed that the problem was that rain water from the attached gutter was seeping under the porch and rotting it from the ground up. Considering that the rain water had no other option for egress, he suggested we go with limestone and concrete, instead of wood, since it would last longer and solve the rotting issue. Out of all of the suggestions we received from various other contractors, John was the only one that thought outside of the box! His quote for both projects were in line with what the other contractors had asked for, but his solution made the most sense. John and his team are extremely professional, took care of our home as if it were their own, were on time every day and finished a day earlier than expected. We hired John and his team to do interior painting and minor wall and door frame repairs in our new-to-us house. John spent 45 minutes doing a detailed walk-through of the house with me to generate an estimate. He pointed out both things we had noticed needed to be addressed as well as other details we hadn't considered, asking questions and providing helpful suggestions throughout. He documented the scope of work in a detailed fixed-price estimate, including paint. John and his team arrived on time and did high quality work, finishing earlier than expected and doing a great cleanup. John also noticed a gutter pipe that needed a little additional length and fixed it free of charge. The Good: wait, nothing good at all. He met with us and right away wanted to rip everything out, including $40,000 floors. Condescending on every turn. Rips on all other contractors. He quoted us verbally $70,000 on site, refused to write an estimate, and within 2 days he quoted $150,000 in remodeling... on a $200,000 house. Please stay away. Get someone who is professional and will treat you and everyone around you with respect. But to not even provide a written estimate is an absolute joke. read more

I have held off on writing this review for over a year for two reasons: 1. maxim: 'if you don't have anything positive to say, don't say anything' 2. who wants to be responsible for harming anyone's livelihood!? We worked with Johansen because of Yelp reviews solely. Since then I've been scolded by other Yelpers as not holding up the Yelp responsibility and have felt conflicted within as well since ignorance in this matter does not lead to bliss. Anyhow, the job done was: -incomplete, & -poorly executed The floor replaced now sags (immediately after replacement - not with use!) and causes walking difficulties/dangers and the wall length bookshelves replaced were completely inappropriate for load held and now sag ridiculously as well. If I could easily post a picture of it, you'd gasp. While there are many excuses as to why, I additionally took the time and effort to walk the finished project with Johansen (no small feat as I live across the country from my father's home where the work was done) with a detailed outline of EXACTLY what and where we requested follow up from poor execution. Johansen promised to follow through especially with respect to the ridiculous wall length bookshelves and creating supports to make it reasonable. Nothing's happened over a year later and all those details are now lost and forgotten along with any other attempts for a positive completion on Johansen's behalf.
