The house needed a full roof replacement. A-1 was the most responsive and came out for an estimate in short order. The estimate seemed reasonable, with a separate figure for gutters, which I took. They waited until the financing came through, which took almost two weeks. They started with only a nominal deposit and got the job done within a day of the estimated time, even though we had some rain during that period. The dumpster was dropped and picked up as promised. They cleaned up fully and came back for a separate review to ensure all debris was removed. They didn't get paid until after the job was done. I am fully satisfied with the entire process. read more

The old adage of "you get what you pay for" is generally true but there are some caveats. You can definitely overpay for a service and you can definitely be on top of a cheaper service to get exactly what you're looking for. A1 falls into that later category. I needed a number of things done to my house. The largest of which was the daunting task of removing box gutters (aka yankee gutters) which involves some framing work and completely rebuilding the eave of the house. This specific job led me to contact 43 contractors! Of those 43 companies, I was only able to find 6 professional companies who knew how to handle this job. A1 was several thousands of dollars cheaper than the other 5 companies but the co-owner Alex was very easy to talk with and had the confidence that I was looking for. A1 was also one of the only companies also willing to do other work I needed done (including cedar shake repairs) so I went with them. Unfortunately there were LOTS of issues along the way including: 1) Not having a website (as of the time of booking or writing this review) 2) Not showing up to our initial appointment (& never being contacted to apologize or reschedule) 3) Not showing up for another appointment to sign a contract to begin the job (again, never being contacted to apologize or reschedule) 4) Exclusively using subcontractors to do the work while not being there in person to supervise beyond 5 minutes per day. 5) Attempting to use cedar shake labeled "not for exterior use" on the outside of my house. 6) Attempting to use a generally inferior gutter guard design when better options were available. 7) Attempting to patch the roof with the wrong color shingle. 8) Having a gutter subcontractor install downspouts in a location I specifically told him not to. 9) Not properly cleaning up their construction debris. Fortunately, I called Alex out on nearly everything. I had him reorder the correct siding before installing it, had him straighten out crooked gutters installed by one of his subcontractors, asked him to order a specific gutter guard style, and most importantly, had him redo the entire roof (at cost) to match the incorrect shingle color he had put on the roof. I think Alex seems like a great guy but wished he (or his partner) was there to supervise the work every day. I didn't like how many corners A1 tried to cut when I wasn't paying attention and how on top of them I needed to be in order to get a decent job done. When all is said and done the money I saved by going with them is about comparable to the hassle so I'm not sure I would go with them again. read more

I would not recommend them. Yelp and Google had glowing reviews for this contractor but my experience was everything but. I worked with Dan. The job was to use mortar to fix the cracks around the building to prevent further leaking. Dan promised the job to be finished in 3 days. 3 days later, we walked around the building and inspected the work. The work was subpar at best, certain spots were not filled..Dan responded "I'll get my top mansion this time and be on site". Henry in particular was very attentive to our needs and he would always return messages and stop by when he could. Alex and Henry from A1 did a bunch of jobs for me when prepping to sell my house. They replaced some badly stained shingles on my roof, and they fixed all the shingles that had "popped" to make the roof inspection ready. I also had a bad J-channel on one side of the house that was causing water staining on an upstairs bedroom ceiling (they did both sides to be sure). Alex cleaned up my chimney and made it look better than it has looked since I bought the house 5 years ago! I wish I had called him sooner. They also cleaned my gutters, and patched a rough spot on the top part of my roof that another company did a sloppy job on. Finally, they cleaned up a bad cement job on my front steps. This was a little tricky because someone did it once before (again, they fixed someone else's sloppy work - you get what you pay for!) and even came back a second time because one of steps was a little loose (the cement underneath wasn't level, so they completely scraped it out and made it much better and secure). Henry and Alex did a great job repairing a few holes in our roof where water was coming in as well as one portion where the plywood was becoming detached which was bowing the shingles. They went the extra mile by sealing a number of places around the roof and fixing minor nail issues. The short version: I wouldn't recommend these guys because they started a job on my house without properly scheduling it and did a poor job at that on shingle siding. The long version: I have had 2 experiences with this contractor. The first went well enough, they replaced a few shingles that were ripped off the roof for a reasonable price. I would say these guys are fine to hire for a simple job like that. The second job was unacceptable, and is the reason I am leaving 2 stars. I called Alex to ask if we could schedule a job to do 2 things. Replace 2 ripped shingles on the roof, and replace a 10ft x 10ft section of cedar shingle siding. They told me they could use the material I already had to do the job, and gave me a price. A few days later I told them I would like them to do the job, and they said they would schedule it. I did not hear from them for a week, at which point I texted them asking them when they would be out. After another week of no communication, they came out without having notified me, and started doing the job (ripping off the existing shingles) without asking for permission from anyone at the house (I was at work, my wife noticed banging and shingles falling into the yard). I was planning to purchase different materials to have them use but was not given that opportunity because of the rushed and sloppy work. The whole situation was completely unacceptable and I regret letting my wife pay for the job before I could assess it. Attempts to have them fix the job have failed and I am not interested at this point as I do not trust them to do a good job. read more

Dan was friendly and professional. We had him and his team come out to fix a leak in our roof that was starting to damage our 2nd floor bathroom ceiling. He quickly found the cause and most importantly didn't try to upsell us like other contractors have in the past (i.e. telling us we needed a new roof). Alex was amazing. I called him a few wks ago when it was pouring rain and my contractor who was doing my construction told me "I have bad news, Your roof is leaking bad." Alex answered right away, said he could get over there within a couple hours, and he would revert back his findings. I was lucky enough to have my contractor let him in, show him the damage, and Alex handled it like a pro. Called me when he evaluated the situation, told me if I wanted to commit to hiring him, he would tarp it off that same day to prevent further damage until he could fix it when it stopped raining the next day. I have never even met this guy personally, and he was already solving my problems like a pro. I told him to come back, fix it, and I would arrange payment. He came by a few days later to take the payment from my husband. My experience was nothing short of 5 stars, I would give him 10 if I could. Fast, efficient, trustworthy, etc. He even texted me photos of the work he did because he knew I trusted him to handle it without being there to supervise. (I work in NYC and live in NJ suburbs). Will be hiring him for all our roofing needs going forward. Do not call anyone else. :) read more

Short Version - It seems that A1 Progressive was only concerned about receiving a check. I was misguided by all the positive reviews on Yelp and Google. Perhaps I was one of the few who had a terrible experience? I'll let you decide, but I will not be using nor recommending A1 Progressive. Long Version - The mortar on my 100 year old home was deteriorating which caused water seepage between the bricks. A combination of this and broken down gutter system caused leaks around the house - most prominent when it rains. I relied on Yelp and Google to find the best contractor for the job. Judging by the glowing reviews and years of experience, I hired A1 Progressive. Dan offered a price that's about 33% higher than the current market rates, but I don't mind paying a premium for what I thought was good work. Unfortunately, my experience with Dan and A1 Progressive were not great. Dan was persistent on a 6 day turnaround and ensured that the project will be finished under his supervision, even though I tried to encourage him to take his time and that establishing a deadline was not necessary. He also promised to be present and oversee the project on all working days. Needless to say, Dan overpromised and underdelivered. I have security cameras installed around the house for the tenant's safety. However, with the cameras, I was also able to see how long and when Dan's team worked. They worked 3 3-4 hour days, which was less than my expectation considering the whole house needed to be repointed, gutters needed repairs, windows needed to be sealed, etc. I couldn't tell you whether or not Dan was present on those days. 6 days had passed - we had scheduled a walkthrough to ensure that all issues highlighted in the contract were addressed. I also asked Dan to walk me through the work that was completed. He had very little knowledge of the work that his men did (e.g. he couldn't tell me what was done to fix the damaged drain pipes). I would say only about 60% of the work was completed. The following issues were still outstanding: 1.) about 40% of the wall was not repointed, 2.) some cracks were half-filled, 3.) and one major crack that posed as a structural issue was not addressed.. Overall, the project seemed rushed with very poor management - a recipe for disaster. I was paying a premium and expected the work to reciprocate. I refused to pay the full amount until the work was 100% complete. Dan and his team came back a week later to finish the job. During our second walkthrough, I was able to spot small areas of the wall that went unrepointed. Dan kept ensuring me that those areas did not need repointing since it wouldn't be impacted by the rain. He sounded defensive, and his response seemed to be an excuse to cover up faulty work. There was some good to all this bad. I did appreciate how quick Dan responded to my text/calls. He's also punctual - never missed a meetup and showed up on time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- About 3 months have passed since the job - The water is still coming from the outside sidewalls and into the home (this was the job we specifically hired A1 to do). We hired another contractor. They were able to identify and fix the issue. read more

After meeting with and receiving 3 separate estimates we went with A1 because they were not only quick to respond, very knowledgeable, reasonably priced and had great follow up but they made us feel comfortable by thoroughly explaining the work that was needed in a way we could understand. If I could give them zero stars I would. They advertised a chimney cleaning and a dryer vent cleaning on groupon. When I went to call to schedule and appointment the web-site link from groupon no longer existed. I looked them up and made an appointment for Friday November 6 and was told I would receive a confirmation call on the Monday before. When I called on Tuesday to confirm, after not receiving my call I was informed that they were not honoring the groupon and that I should have been issued a refund by groupon for the service. I did not receive a refund and when I contacted groupon customer support I was told that they had not received any information regarding the cancellation of the groupon. As a result I couldn't get a full refund only a credit for groupon. This company is a fraudulent bunch of scammers and thieves. Do not use them! If they can't honor a service that they signed up to offer then I can only imagine what kind of service they would provide for a cold call. read more
