We were so excited to go. The people were wonderful and very accommodating which set expectations. The Michelin plaque on the wall did nothing to lower them. Staff was 5* Overall food was excellent w exception of fish which was way overcooked. Food was 4* The win was the downfall. Bottles ranged from $9 to $55 retail and was plebeian at best. The low quality wine glasses added to the disappointment. Wine was 1-2*. If the wine had been outstanding I would have rated 4 or 5 stars. read more

Wow! What a nice surprise to stumble upon this cozy restaurant. Lovely tasting menu and a la carte options. Food is sourced locally, and quite sophisticated in presentation without being pretentious. Stumbled on this restaurant while another French restaurant didn't take us because we did not have reservations. How lucky we were to end up here! This is the only night we have in town as this is a layover on the way back to LA. It was hard to know how many course would make a complete dinner. The very nice waiter described it as a tasting menu so we were afraid it would be small bites. We chose 6 for me and 7 for him. It ended up being one of the biggest most complex dinners we've ever had. Every course was artfully put together and each component had its own unique flavor. Every bite complemented each other. The meal was delicious! The servers were so efficient and courteous, giving us a truly wonderful dining experience. Food was well worth the fixed price $79 for 7 course meal!! Visited with my family and had the 7-course tasting menu. They accommodated both the nut allergy as well as our vegetarian child seamlessly. Food was excellent - creative, nicely plated and every course was delicious (including amuses it was more like 10-11 courses). Nice mix of fish, vegetable and meat courses with interesting origins (a fabulous wild duck course, very fresh grey mullet ceviche for example). Service was gracious and friendly and the atmosphere was elegant and quiet. Do note that if you go for the 7 course menu it can be a ~4+ hour experience. But with the steady pace of the meal and the fact you can speak in conversational voices, the time isn't a factor. If you're looking for a centrally located foodie experience, Restaurant Johannes is absolutely worth a visit. read more

It's a coincidence that we visited Johannes only one day after Doron made this bad experience. We had booked our table about 2 weeks in advance and were looking forward to it. And we didn't get disappointed. Re-visiting Johannes after half a year was exactly the same pleasure like on the first time. The service is still very professional yet nice. The dishes are still a visual and culinary delight. If you want you can even look up the composition of the current courses on Johannes' website. It's true that it took more time between the order and the first appetizer than when we were here for the first time. But after that the courses were served in enjoyable intervals. The dessert contained a little surprise: if you were curious enough to turn the plate where the small ice cream was placed on, you found a little crème brûlée in the cup underneath it. Great meal for the adventurous, not for the faint of heart. I can give you the viewpoint from an adventurous eater, myself, and a non-adventurous eater, my husband. My husband is a pizza kind of guy. If he could eat pizza for every meal, he would be happy. Therefore, when presented with eel mouse and steak tartare he was not happy. I, mistakenly, thought he could get over his predisposition to disliking different foods. Although he did try everything, he ended up only enjoying the pork belly. On the other side of the spectrum, I love eating everything. I've eaten live octopus, chicken feet, anything and everything that won't poison me. I really enjoyed this meal. There were two amuse bouche at the beginning which was a nice touch. We went with the 4 dishes, which in my opinion was more than enough. I thought the dishes were well done. I also liked our server. She ended up being from Los Angeles so we felt comfortable having her serve us our first night in Amsterdam. She was very pleasant and gave us tons of great information on Amsterdam. The décor of the place is nice. The two people tables are kind of close together, but since there were not that many people there at 7 p.m. we made it through most of the meal without anyone next to us. It got a lot more crowded later on, around 9 p.m. This is a romantic place that I think is worth it if everyone in your party enjoys good food. read more

I have no idea what happened. Was it just an off night? This was the worst meal I've ever had. The food was supposed to be imaginative and innovative, and it was, but it was also supposed to taste good. Isn't that the main point of food? The service was fine, though the meal took several hours (and felt even longer). Each dish both my dining guest and myself kept expecting to get better. Each one was worse than the one prior. The flavor combinations were just, well, not to my (our) taste. And it appeared not to the taste of other guests either. As we sat there between courses, we observed practically every other patron in the establishment pushing their food around their plates and looking at their watches... this was just bad. I know there are not tons of wonderful restaurants in Amsterdam, but there are some. This is definitely not one of them (at least not from my one experience there). I will not go back. This is the first restaurant I've ever gone to that by the end of the meal, I felt like I had just finished a jail term and was being released. It was actually painful and it just kept on going, and getting worse. I will never forget how happy I was the second I left Johannes and I took a deep breath of "freedom". Amuse Bouche 2-4: (Came at the same time) Chips with something chilled on top Madeline with popcorn and sauce topping Some jello with numbing pepper flower Excellent bread (small bun with crispy outside) Course 1: Slow cooked pike perch in smoked eel/ tangerine vinaigrette, topped with edible flowers, carrots Course 2: One of us got veal strips and the other got grilled (tender) halibut. Both came with a cigar of mayonnaise with capers, topped with cocktail onions, fennel sauce Course 3: Lemon sole filet topped with Jerusalem artichoke (one of us had beef tongue), fish foam Course 4: Cheese ravioli (something like Brie), in chestnut dashi foam, chestnuts, chestnut moose Course 5: Cod with plum vinaigrette sauce, plum. Another dish was rabbit, bacon (from cheek) and same sauce Amuse Bouche 5: Palette cleanser. White chocolate lollipops with piping sugar on top Course 6: Citrus thyme ice cream on poached pear, topped with amuse meringue, thin honey crisps Every dish was creative and had bold combinations. One of the best restaurants we have been to at Amsterdam. We finished off with coffee which was mediocre. I think we are spoiled having great coffee at SF bah area. The coffee came with a plate of dark rocks with tint meringue mushrooms on top. A puzzle - two of the rocks are chocolates. The chef indeed has a great sense of humor. read more

Set in an understated atmosphere as the food and wine pairing. Unpretentious and casual dining with matching friendly service. If you're looking for a special meal while in Amsterdam Johannes is a great choice. We had our anniversary dinner here and were not disappointed. The food was delicious and interesting, the service was fantastic, and the wine choices spot on. They graciously accommodated my vegetarian diet. We eat at old people times so at 6:30pm we were the first in the restaurant - this afforded us a nice window seat overlooking the canal. To my knowledge they don't have a dress code but I would suggest dressing at least "corporate casual" to feel appropriately dressed. It will cost you a pretty penny (er, euro) but I highly recommend Johannes. read more

They made a fairly large mistake during our service where we missed one of our courses but immediately explained what happened and offered us a wine pairing while we waited etc. Very honest and professional etc. The setting was fairly formal so I felt a bit underdressed but they were very welcoming. read more

I went here with a group of 8 colleagues to celebrate the ending of a big project. We read about this place and had high expectations, but we were still blown away by the food and the amazing wines. I liked the fact that we had a table in the back, a bit separated from the rest of the restaurant, which gave us some privacy and, more importantly, the other guests some peace. Groups can be loud.. Easily one of the top 5 meals I have ever had! Ever bite was a culinary delight of both taste and texture. We did the wine pairing and asked for our dishes to be without fish/seafood. I still dream about their potato soup! Each course was better than I could construct - simply amazing. The fact that I couldn't easily replicate these tasty courses in my own well stocked kitchen made this a 5 star! Great location, nice outdoor patio in the back, excellent presentation, professional service. The five course meal was very well presented, the wine was excellent, particularly liked the seabass and caviar, very good combination. The sous-vide beef was not particularly great, flavor was ok but texture was a bit tough. I would not recommend going here unless you plan on having a lengthy dinner. We ended up spending a total of 4.5 hours including a quick desert and coffee. read more

although it rains a lot, wearing rain boots and raincoat plus umbrella and waterproof backpack are basics living in amsterdam. found this restaurant by chance while walking through the neighborhood and see the cute dining tables thr the window. made the reservation right away and came back later to dine :) pick the most courses from the menu but no wine coz alcohol is bad that's imprinted deep in my mind, haha. guess it sounds weird to european when they were borned with this beverage, hehe. so the food is good, innovation is expected. service and staff both nice. always like them to bring over the machine if pay by credit card. just the waiting time between courses faster the better. dish size not big so hungry is unpleasant :P read more

My wife and I ate here recently and this was one of the best meals we had for years - probably the best. Every course is a piece of art presentation wise and with every bite you discover some new great taste. In fact, we started with a 4-course meals with wine pairings and upgraded to a 5-course meal because it was so good. The wines selected by the restaurant were excellent, too, and we asked to buy one white and one red wine at the end - no problem, they gave it to us for retail price. The service was great, with lots of explanations for each wine pairing. Also, it was nice to get 2 extra courses for free that were equally excellent. read more
