The Pantry serves authentic Dutch food in a cozy environment. Definitely get one of their prix-fixe menus. It includes an appetizer, entree, and dessert. If you are sharing a meal with someone, get items from a different prix-fixe menu and you can both try a variety of items. We enjoyed: * Charcuterie plate: sausages taste minimally processed and delicious * Beef and onion stew: taste slightly different than ones in America * Cauliflower and cheese oven bake: vegetarian's comfort food * Hutspot (mashed potatoes and carrots) and meatballs: non-vegetarian's comfort food * Pea soup with smoked ham For desserts, we had chocolate mousse and vlaflip (vanilla custard) and they were just okay. I'm not sure if desserts are the Dutch's strengths, except maybe the Dutch apple pie. They even bottle their own house beer. The restaurant is small. Try to make a reservation if you can. We didn't have a reservation, but went to the restaurant at around 5PM and were seated in about 15 minutes. Highly recommended! This is truly Amsterdam experience--a cozy restaurant that feels very Dutch. In a city with a lot of great restaurants, it is a stand out. You must be punctual. The reservations are in time blocks--so everyone enters together at the reservation time. It is orderly, not a mad rush, but they are serious about the reservation timing. Love this place! Happy that we were able to get a seat quickly here because reservations are a must! Inside may feel and look cramped but it is super cozy. We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. The Pantry is a very popular traditional Dutch restaurant. Made a reservation and my table was ready upon arrival. Dining is available both indoors or outdoors. It was towards freezing when I went so the outdoor tables were available for walk-ins. Reservations are a good idea. Started off with the pea soup and it was different. The soup was pretty thick and tasted like peas. There were a couple slices of sausage that were placed over the soup. The soup was served with a slice of rye bread along with a piece of bacon...interesting to say the least. For the main, opted for the hutspot which was mashed potatoes with carrots, 3 scoops, along with a sausage. The mashed potatoes were ok, although I only managed to finish half a scoop. Portions were gigantic. The sausage was ok. The highlight of the meal was the Dutch apple pie. This was served warm. The pie was freshly baked and wasn't too sweet. It was filled with apples and topped with white powdered sugar. This was also served with a side of whipped cream. The interior of the restaurant is cramped and the staff were wonderful. This restaurant was on my wish list for places to definitely go while visiting Amsterdam. We finally went for lunch yesterday after our walking tour. Reservation recommended. We did not have one but they were happy to seat the 2 of us and invited us to switch tables once another couple left (they were checking out). Small space, can accommodate groups of 2-4, cozy atmosphere, lots of the traditional blue and white ceramics on the wall (dishes and tiles). Traditional Dutch cuisine: we ordered the Boerenkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and Zuurkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and a slice of apple pie to share for dessert. The food arrived piping hot in about 20 minutes. It was sooo delicious--the tasty juicy sausage pairs perfectly the mashed potatoes with either sauerkraut or kale. The apple pie was also tasty--larger chunks of apple and more spices less sugar than American apple pie from what I can tell. Perfect with whipped cream. A must visit if you're in Amsterdam and want to try traditional fare. Highly recommended! read more

Fortunately, our nice hostess said a reservation was canceled and hooked us up. Inside is quite small and sitting and dining right next to a stranger is a strong possibility. You can order individual items from their large menu, but these nice folks have made it easier for you by having a prefix menu of three-course meals that consist of popular Dutch cuisine. Ordered the number three on their special menu: - 1st course - 3 sausages, bread, pickles and mustard - 8/10: not sure what kind of sausages these were, but one had the texture of pate, the other was like steak tartare, and the last had a bit of snap to the casing. They were all very tasty, but the last one was particularly good. - Main course - 7.5/10 - Beef and onion stew with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. Loved the beef. Very tender cuts that you can knife through with a spoon. Sides were just OK. Wasn't a big fan of the red cabbage though. Tasted sweet like cranberry sauce, but a bit too much of it that you couldn't really taste the cabbage. - Dessert - Chocolate mousse, chocalate ice cream and eggnog - 7.5/10: mousse and ice cream were perfectly fine, but the eggnog had some serious alcohol in it. The pea soup is soooo fire. First time having it and I must say it is now my favorite soup. My boyfriend got the oven dish. He rated it 4/5, it's simple. This lovely restaurant lives up to all the positive reviews. Such a cute and inviting atmosphere, delicious food, and warm friendly service as well. The ham dish was actually a wonderfully cooked pork knuckle that was sublime. Several also ordered the set menus and they were all delicious. Given our short amount of time, we couldn't make it to a herring stand, so to let our nephews try salted/picked herring for the first time, we ordered it here. In all my visits to Amsterdam (and there have been plenty in the last three years), I never went out of my way to try authentic Dutch food. Well, The Pantry is the Amsterdam institution for Dutch food, so I made my way over here after making a reservation. And DEFINITELY make a reservation...saw plenty of people get rejected at the door. Ordered the Bitterballen (because of course you must order Bitterballen if you are getting Dutch food) and Salted Herring with Onions and Pickles as appetizers. Of course I have at least had Bitterballen before and this was definitely very solid. The mustard that it came with was perfect for it. It was also the first time that I have tried pickled herring. And I actually liked it a lot! Had great taste. The chopped onions it came with added some bite to it. For entrées, we ordered the Bloemkoolstamppot (Mashed Potatoes Mixed with Cauliflower) served with a Smoked Sausage as well as the Savory Beef and Onion Stew (with Red Cabbage and Mashed Potatoes). Both were excellent! Just felt like I was at home eating some very nice homemade food. Hit the spot! Staff here were super friendly. Made some great suggestions as to what we should order. The ambience in here makes you feel like you're actually in a home. Very warm and cozy with the tables close together. This place is very famous especially for the tourist (of course, there are local customers too) so highly recommended to make a reservation. If you visit first time, recommend to order their course. They have five kinds of course that can enjoy the Netherland's meals. I chose Menu 1(Dutch Delight menu) and my husband chose Menu 2(Grandmothers kitchen menu). This place is very small so you absolutely need reservations. We tried 1-week out and only got lunch availability which was fine for our day. Some came by and sadly were turned away as there was no chance of getting in. Service was very welcoming and friendly. This place is so busy that you're packed in pretty tightly. The Pantry is a small restaurant that serves the best meals. I adore Amsterdam, and never thought of Amsterdam as a foodie paradise. It really is. The Pantry s proof of that. I was craving fries, so we started with fries as an appetizer. The fries were perfect. They needed to be salted, but they were crispy on the outside, and perfectly soft on the inside. The "beef croquettes " that we ordered as the actual appetizer were perfection in each bite. Tasty beef mixed in with tasty cheesy rue, and deep fried to perfection. The mustard dipping sauce tied all of the flavors together. Then we ordered dinner... this was a dining event that I would repeat over and over. The traditional meatball and potato dish is an Amsterdam favorite. I totally get it. It's comfort food. It's tasty. It's flavorful. It will satisfy your tummy screaming for food. The chicken satay was so filling. A huge portion of tender chicken covered in a tasty peanut sauce. It doesn't taste like the Americanized version of satay. It's a deeper less sweeter version of what I've tried. The side salad was amazing. Strange to say that, but it was! There was another side that was not identifiable, but damn delicious! Everything was amazing. Yes, we ordered way too much food. Yes, I would do it again. Yes, we ordered dessert anyway. The apple pie was the right way to top off an epicurean experience. Amsterdam is known for apple pie. Who knew ?!? Order the pie! The apple slices are juicy. The apples are sweetened with a sweet cinnamon sauce that will make you lick the fork with every bite. The Pantry has been serving classic Dutch dishes, such as bitterballen, herring, kroketten, hutspot & poffertjes for 25 years &, while the menu & decor scream traditional Dutch, they are thankfully modern enough to offer vegetarian versions of some of these items. While the food was great, I cannot say enough about the staff! The main woman who served us--I say "main" because they really do work as a team & we were attended to by at least three friendly & capable women--must be the hardest working woman in Amsterdam. I was told before not to trust a place that served food with the country's flag on it. There's no surer sign of a tourist trap. But The Pantry was such a nice intro to Dutch cuisine, I don't care if it's a bit touristy. I mean, isn't Amsterdam in general a little touristy? The Pantry serves many traditional Dutch dishes, which you can order a-la-carte, but you can also order as part of set menus. We went with Set Menu #1 which included pea soup, hutspot (a potato/carrot mash) boerenkoolstamppot (a potato/kale mash) and zuurkoolstamppot (a potato/saurkraut mash) with sausage, and vanilla custard as dessert. We also added an order of the famous pickled herring. The pea soup was very savoury and comforting, with pieces of bacon inside. The various mashes were decent and paired nicely with sausage, though not anything I would crave again. However, the dish I fell in love with and would order multiple more times during my visit was pickled herring. Don't let the exoticness scare you away, it kind of tastes like a really decadent piece of sashimi. Somehow the raw onions work super well with fatty fish and now I feel like adding onions to more fish dishes at home. The ambiance of the restaurant is also summed up by the word cozy. There are beautiful Dutch style blue and white porcelains decorating the walls. The servers were super friendly. The restaurant is quite small though but luckily they also allow reservations. There was something extremely comfortable about eating some hot soup in the corner of this tiny restaurant as we watched it pour rain outside.
