Their menu has many traditional items that might not be found in more touristy restaurants. I ordered the Stamppot Proeverij (€22.50), which was a set of 3 skillets of mashed potatoes topped with various meats and veggies (refer to the photo). Each skillet was delicious in its own way and this variety added to the tasty experience. The potatoes were a nice creamy consistency and there was a good potato-to-topping ratio. I also got the Poffertjes (€7) for dessert, and they were expertly made to a perfect fluffy-yet-chewy consistency. A simple yet tasty traditional dessert. The restaurant itself is decorated with classic Dutch decor, art, etc. and has a very homey atmosphere. In addition to the indoor seating, there is also outdoor seating right by the canal. The staff are very friendly and the service speed is decent. Kudos to Yelpers Dennis M. and John L. for leading us on this Dutch food quest! I absolutely fell in love with this place. The employees and the patrons all broke out into song after song providing wonderful entertainment throughout the night. It was all in Dutch but I liked the singing all the same! On to the food. We got the traditional Dutch Stamppot. It came with a meatball, mashed potatoes, gravy and bacon. A hearty comfort plate. Mom's Stewed Beef with meat, potatoes and red cabbage was homey and tasty as well. We really liked these two dishes. The Dutch steak was good but at the end of the day, it was a normal small steak with fries. Our beverages paired well with the food. A few shots of the traditional Dutch liquor Jenever and a few local brews from Dorpsbrouwerij de Pimpelmeesch. Perfect on such a wet and cold evening. It's not a Dutch feast without some Dutch desserts. Their poffertjes came out hot and fresh, loaded with powdered sugar. Delicious! The Dutch apple pie crust and filling was nicely done. Tante Leen ice cream with eggnog and chocolate sauce was decadent. We were all stuffed but we ate and drank everything! The waiters kept us liquid all night (flat, bubbly or spirited), filling and refilling our glasses, then left us alone the rest of the time until we needed something. In the US, we are used to waiters checking up on us and waiting to pick up the tab. But in Holland, they don't do that until we specifically ask for it. It really added to the family/comforting feel of the place which I liked. We had an awesome evening! Good food and drinks. Great company. Free entertainment. We ended up closing the restaurant down after a 2+ hour dinner. I highly recommend trying Bistro Bij Ons out. We will definitely make it our stop the next time we are in town. read more

On the hunt for a traditional Dutch dish we asked a couple of peeps we met at a Yelp event and they all seemed to be in agreement that this is the spot we should visit. I am glad we listened! After visiting Anne Frank's house we strolled the canal snapping photos, but for some reason it felt like the temp dropped 20 degrees. We were FREEZING. It was time to eat (and drink wine). Just a block or two from Anne Frank this is the PERFECT place to come and grab some traditional dishes for any tourists in town (yet, still good enough that the locals love it!). Walking in the place is small, and the friendly server/owner (?) greeted us and let us choose a table. As we sat down she asked if we were cold? Still had our coats and hats on as we sat down. Yes, we were freezing! She smiled and took our orders. WINE...we will start with some WINE please. As we sipped on the red stuff, layers of clothing came off. The ice in my veins began to melt and my skin no longer felt like it was pricked with needles. Yes...this is nice. At that moment I got to really enjoy the coziness that is this place. It's decorated with various traditional items such as clogs and Black Pete (I did some research) which is apparently part of their culture, but for Americans can be a bit shocking as it's what looks like dolls in black-face. So we got down to the grub. Both were recommended dishes. 1) Pea soup - Whoa! Any ice left in my soul melted into a pitiful puddle of water when I took my first sip! It was pea soup but with a different flavor profile than you might be used to and it comes with toast (?) with some raw meat that looked like bacon. It was good! 2) Stramppot - THE dish to get when going dutch...no, not splitting the bill, but rather grabbing some Dutch grub! A mountain of mashed potato with sauerkraut underneath. I don't think I have ever had sauerkraut. Then there is a puddle of gravy in the middle and a sausage sticking out of it. *CAUTION* when you are photographing this dish be careful the angle you take the pick at as it could look like something completely different! Aside from the appearance this was delicious! The flavors blended well (once again a totally diff spice/taste profile than what I am used to, but still great!). Filling, and it felt like it was good old comfort food (which our friends later confirmed as this is indeed comfort food.) Good enough to warm your soul! PLUS - Free WiFi! This was great for us as we didn't have service and getting on WiFi was the only way we could check into businesses on Yelp (sad how addicted I am to checking in/seeing updates!) but this was a nice break to get online. So glad I came here for Diner! This place has a great authentic to Holland menu. They have an outside seating area allowing you to watch the water taxis pass by, and the view is great. I wish I got a view-side seat, but I couldn't so there's no photo to prove it, but I promise it's worth a stop. The staff are very friendly and openly knowledgeable about the preparation of each dish, and gave honest opinions about what to try out. The dish I ordered was amazing! The beef was obviously slow roasted considering how tender and moist it was. And the vegetables and potatoes were just right! It actually surprised me how quick the food arrived, and how hot and fresh it tasted. The portion was a little light for my preference, but I was about to finish and have a couple of cold beers. *WARNING* this is a lengthy but WORTHWHILE review! I wish I could give this place 10 stars! My boyfriend and I went on a trip to Europe earlier this year and we spent about a week of our vacation in Amsterdam. In that week, this was the only place we ate at twice! We wanted to experience as much variety as possible in all the places we were, in a short amount of time. But once we ate here, we couldn't stop thinking (and talking) about it! We HAD to go back again before we left! We tried the chicken schnitzel and mom's stewed beef on our first visit, and even months later my mouth waters at the thought of the stewed beef! The schnitzel was definitely good but the real prize is mom's stewed beef! The dish had a perfect balance of savory and sweet with the red cabbage, mashed potatoes and beef. The meat was incredibly tender and bursting with flavor. I am actually now a pescetarian but wouldn't hesitate at another serving of that meal, meat and all! We also tried a liqueur at dessert that, I later found out, the owner makes herself in a bunch of different flavors! It's called Jordaan Likeur and the flavor we had was Jankbak (macaroon flavor of course!!!). Having spent quite a few years tending bar, I was quite impressed with the liqueur and obviously wanted to buy a bottle to bring back to the states. To my dismay, this was not something that was produced to be sold by the bottle and there was nothing comparable at any of the many stores we looked in. We stopped back at the restaurant and happened upon the owner, her girlfriend, and a few friends singing in Dutch merrily along a track that I was explained was recorded by the multi talented owner herself! We explained how much we enjoyed our dining experience and how we planned to return again before our departure. We asked if there was a place where we could purchase a bottle of that delicious macaroon liqueur and the owner offered to bring us one of the stock she held for the restaurant! Upon our return we, once again, ordered moms stewed beef and this time paired it with the meatball stamppot. This is definitely my recommendation for anyone wanting a taste of authentic Dutch food! The stamppot has sauerkraut mixed in the mashed potatoes with gravy and a delicious moist meatball! The stewed beef is still our favorite dish but, really, everything we had there was amazing... To top it off we got to take home a 0.7 liter bottle of that remarkable liqueur!!! The next time I find myself in Amsterdam I plan to spend a LOT of time here! THANKS FOR READING LOL! read more

In 2012, we stumbled upon this gem while searching for a place to eat near our hotel. We were the only people in the restaurant at the time and it was a memorable night. The staff was hospitable and brought us amazing dishes as well as providing entertainment. The owners themselves were making the food in the back at the time, giving it a personal touch. All together very warm and inviting. Everything was delicious, one of the best traditional Dutch meals I've ever had. Now, in 2015, we knew we wanted to come back and managed to find it once more. We had the same great service and great Dutch food. The owners were also still managing the restaurant and working in the kitchen. If you are looking for authentic Dutch style food look no further. This place is a tiny gem located across the street from a canal near the Anne Frank museum, with tables on the canal. They serve an assortment of dutch sandwiches, plates and cheeses. This place had the BEST meatballs we tasted in Amsterdam. We also enjoyed the smokes sausage (similar to kielbasa), French fries, grilled cheese sandwich and assorted cheeses. Be warned, credit cards are not accepted, which is why I didn't give them 5 stars. Our hotel had a carousel of hanging coupons and there was one for this restaurant for a free alcoholic beverage. Talk about hospitality! Was recommended to this place and it did not disappoint. I went in early and snagged a table near the bar. This is our first time in Amsterdam and we were very excited to try some local cuisine. Bistro Bij Ons caught our eye and we decided to stop for dinner. Right off the bat, we were left with a sour taste in our mouth due to the service. The waitress rolled her eyes when seating us (which we were taken aback by because it seemed so unwarranted) and had an annoyed expression on her face the whole time. As a tourist, I am aware that servers here tend to be on the perfunctory side, but the service here was extraordinarily curt and definitely left something to be desired. We ordered the Dutch Stamppot with both the meatball and the sausage as well as the chicken sate. The potatoes were tasty and the meatball was big enough, but the sausage legitimately tasted like a giant hotdog. And chatted while our food was being prepared by the gentleman in the kitchen. Its an open kitchen so you can see him preparing your food. I was very pleased to see him constantly cleaning the cooking area. Im a huge fan of cleanliness and this made me all warm inside! Our food came out pretty fast as the restaurant was empty. My husband's dish, the Stamppot was very comical in appearance but was deliciously tasty. My soup came with a toast with butter and what seemed to be a cut of meat somewhere between raw bacon and prosciutto. It really had the texture of raw bacon...but I didnt know raw bacon could be consumed? Either way, it was very tasty and the soup was pretty good as well. However, it doesnt have the same seasonings that pea soups with bacon have here in USA. This one has more of an oiler consistency and although it did the trick that afternoon, I would probably skip it next time and go for the stramppot. The price is very reasonable, and the service was pretty awesome. Hidden in plain sight in the Jordaan, you can find this very gezellig little place bursting with some Dutch traditional style. The menu is simple but great! You can order a club sandwich or a salad (pretty normal) but also they have traditional Dutch stuff for lunch like a quite tasty homemade croquette on bread which is what I had, a delicious broodje rookworst (almost as good as HEMA's) and a giant frikandel! Service is great! The people running it are funny and quick to take your order. They make they're own house beer which was described by the waitress as "pretty much like Heineken but tastes way better" and let me tell you, that was a spot on description. If you're around the Jordaan and you're a bit hungry for some Dutch goodies, this is definitely the perfect place! Oh! Also, they make their own Saté Saus!!
